1011. Henry Stanley IVE was born on 24 October 1924 in Ashton, Trelawny, Jamaica. He died on 27 May 2000 at the age of 75. The following is a transcript of the obituary for Henry (Bill) that appeared in the Jamaican Gleaner on 6th June 2000:

The late Henry Stanley Ives - An outstanding son

WESTERN BUREAU: LAST THURSDAY, the Ives family of Trelawny buried a husband and father, Henry Stanley (Bill) Ives. And western Jamaica was left mourning the loss of an outstanding son.

The funeral service held at St. Michael's Anglican Church in Falmouth was attended by prominent individuals from industry, commerce and civil society.

Among the many relatives and friends giving tributes were Trelawny's Custos Hon Royland Barrett and Chairman and Managing Director of the Gleaner, Oliver Clarke, who called Mr. Ives a friend; Mrs. Isabela Ives, widow; Mr. Robert Henriques and Mr. Roger Vizbar, son-in-law.

Throughout his decades of work in the sugar industry, Mr. Ives managed both the Frome Sugar Factory in Westmoreland and the Long Pond Estate in Trelawny.

"It was while he was manager of Frome that the factory achieved it's record 110,000 tons of sugar in one crop. That's not been done before or since," said general manager Levy MacGregor, who worked alongside Mr Ives.

His interest in the field was such that, though he was officially retired, he held directorships of several sugar interests, and actively consulted with the Long Pond Sugar Estate up to the time of his death, according to Mr. MacGregor.

His interest in his community was also manifested in other ways. "He was a "very active, very committed Justice of the Peace," says Trelawny's Custos Hon. Roylan Barrett.

"He was a beautiful JP, who took his work seriously. He was rostered for petty session court and he did his job dutifully, and got very involved, reporting to me if court started late, or the police did not show up, or something of that kind. This was important because this is the first contact many citizens have with the justice system. I think he was the only JP who went to the extent that he did," Custos Barrett said.

He worked at Frome after graduation, and then migrated to Canada to study agriculture at the then Ontario Agricultural College where he achieved a Masters of Science degree.

There he met and married Leonara LimeBeer before returning to Jamaica. His children Judy-Ann and Bill, who survive him were raised in Jamaica while their father continued to earn a reputation as a reliable sugar expert.

At various times he managed the Sugar Industry Research Institute, the West Indies Sugar Company, and the National Sugar Company Ltd which owned eight sugar factories. He also served as a director of Clarendon Distillers Ltd.

Mr. MacGregor said Mr. Ives was known throughout social and professional circles as a man of integrity, knowledge and skill who "drew no boundaries when discussing things with people. He could talk to anyone - from the cane cutter to the engineer".

He is survived by his wife of two years Isabela, his daughter and son, as well as five grandsons, described as "the light of his life"
