Do you all remember when we would go to MacFisheries early on a Good
Friday to get fish for our lunch, I wonder how many would do that today.

- Re: Fish
by Zeta Stanley (Member 10256988) on 22-Apr-2011
Hi Dennis that's right I remember
those eels, and how the water from the ice used around the fish would
trickle down to the path, but I can't remember whereabouts MacFisheries
was in the High Street now.

Denis, it was just along from
Martins the news agent ( corner of Beachcroft Ave) on the left going
towards Hayes, by the furniture shop, who's name escapes me. I rememebr
the eels in the galvanised steel trays, Mum made her own jellied eels,
she was the only one who ate them.
- Re: Fish
by Zeta Stanley (Member 10256988) on 22-Apr-2011
Vince that furniture shop wasn't SLATERS was it, a secondhand shop.
- Re: Fish
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 22-Apr-2011
McFisheries was up the opposite
end of the high street Vince, to the left of Beechcroft Avenue going
towards Butlers. Somewhere on our Southallboard there is a photo of it. I
spent hours queueing for fish there during the war and often nothing
arrived. It was before you got to Sainsbury's, which was also on that
side of the high street. I expect Len will be on here telling us exactly
where it was. There was
another fish shop in the direction you mentioned, but it wasn't
McFisheries, and if my memory serves me correctly it was much further
along from Slaters. ... more >>

Mcfisheries was opposite St
Georges Ave. next to Meyers the other fish shop was Rowes near Slaters
and then you had Coopers next to Lightbodies the oil shop between
Abbotts and Hamborough

At one time during the war while
my mother was convalescing, I had to stay with my aunt and uncle who
lived in Acton. I remember she always cooked us a good breakfast, and on
this occasion she did fried sprats. I hadn't had these before, and when
she returned from the kitchen, she couldn't believe it because I had
eaten the lot -heads, tails and all! I never lived it down, and she
loved to tell all my other aunts the tale. ... more >>

- Re: Fish

Yes, I remember it well Denis -
it was on the corner of Saxon road, right opposite John's the bookshop.
The one thing I remember most was a huge china Po. It always seemed to
be there in the front, with an assortment of old framed pictures,
ornaments, and all manner of
bric-a-brac. Can't ever remember buying anything, but was always having a look at everything. My spare coppers always went in the second hand bookshop across the road. It was like a magic cave to me! ... more >>

Yvonne - On page 9 of
Southallboard35 you ask if the Large building at the back is Northcote
Avenue or Hayes Bridge way. I think the photo on the left is Butler's
with that huge sun at the top of the building with Lady Margaret road
going across. You would be looking towards the entire high street, past
Tudor road with Hayes Bridge even further on - a very long way.

How wonderful Yvonne all the
history of Hayes bridge. You can just picture Yeading brook with Batford
bridge over the top, being the main Oxford Uxbridge main dirt road, and
imagine all the horse and carts coming and going over the bridge, and
possibly stagecoaches? Then the bridge being widened in 1755 and rebuilt
in 1800 paid for by turnpike trustees. I expect there were a series of
ongoing repairs to the
bridge. I loved the Turnpike pub - "Hayes Gate" being renamed "Waggon
& Horses". I can think about the bridge in a different light now,
especially with the Grand Union Canal making its appearance in the
1800's. Thank you so much for that. ... more >>

HI SUZANNE. Re: Bankside - I
don't think you could have known me as I was only five in 1936 when we
moved. It's nearly 75 years ago, but I have very nice memories of
Bankside No. 44. Thinking about it again, when we were playing outside
in the road (where there was no busy traffic) we walked on top of big
concrete pipes, so they must have still been building somewhere,
although all the houses facing
the canal were already built. Perhaps it was for the road itself. Do
you still have the May trees in blossom by the canal, or have they all
gone? I can still remember the smell of them. ... more >>

Hi Yvonne, I found some pictures of Ealing Broadway they were very good
all the new buildings looks very modern now, as I remember it was
always called The Queen City, I note that the Townhall is now a bank and
there was a photo of the cinema on the Uxbridge Rd, but it didn't say
the name of it. I also read a little bit of history on Southall, and
also comments that were made re the state of th e
place, it said that Southall was neglected that the roads were in a
mess and so much litter everywhere, I thought how awful, looks like all
the money has been spent in Ealing. ... more >>

CHILDHOOD MEDICATION

Do any of you remember old-fashioned 'cure-alls'? My Grandad used to
recommend ZAMBUK for bruises, bumps & sprains. It was a green gel
type ointment that had the most awful smell. We were also given a
weekly dose of MALT & CODLIVER OIL - a big spoonfull to be gulped
down in one go. For spots, boils or joint pain we had to have a KAOLIN
PULTICE.......heated in a pan & wrapped in an old towel & placed direct onto our skin - ouch! Chris x ... more >>

- Re: CHILDHOOD MEDICATION
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 15-Apr-2011
Yes, I remember Cod Liver Oil
& Malt. I loved it. It was kept in a huge jar on the top shelf in
our kitchen, so we didn't all dip down it. We all had a weekly dose of
Syrup of Figs - my dad had his Epsom Salts. I remember White Horse Oils
when my legs used to ache so much it made me cry in the night, and my
mum used to get up (bless her) and rub it in. Also remember Camphorated
Oil which we got rubbed
on our chest when we had a chesty cold. That felt really warm. I
remember my mother-in-law telling us in her eighties that her mother
used to rub goose fat on their chest for a heavy cold. I bet that was
messy. Snowfire ointment (green) for chilblains and chapped hands (which
you can still get in some chemists),and Eye Ointment for the many styes
I used to get. Not forgetting Oil of Cloves for a toothache.

Pauline-I used to get the weekly

Andrews Liver Salts-he would drink this down, followed by a cup of hot
tea! This worked rapidly and well!

Those of you who lived near NORTH
ROAD must remember MR PETRIE the chemist by Kingsley Avenue. He was
such a dapper little man - so helpful & would make up all sorts of
concoctions for us to take to make us well. My Mum preferrred to go to
him than the Dr's. Chris x
- Re: CHILDHOOD MEDICATION
by Janice Johnson (Member 10240407) on 15-Apr-2011
Goodness me, what memories you've
brought back in mentioning all these medications. My mother used to go
to Mr Petrie, just as yours did Chris, and she would buy Voltas (think
it was a bleach) to put into the wash to restore dingies nappies to
sparkling white again. She also used to send me with 6d to ask for a
"three-two-one" mixture. Think this was something of Mr Petrie's own
invention and it was
always served in a green ridged bottle with a small cork in the top and
had a pleasant smell. Think it was three-pennorth of camphorated oil,
then two-pennorth of something else mixed with one-pennorth of olive
oil. Whatever it was, it did the trick when rubbed onto our chests if we
had colds. Also was given doses of Fennings Fever Cure, a clear liquid,
which wasn't bad to take but after it had cleared the throat made us
all shiver with distaste. Cod Liver Oil and Malt - loved it! White Horse
Oils rubbed on aching legs in the winter. Borax and Honey to rub on
mouth ulcers, Yellow Baselican (spelling bit dodgy here) to draw out
splinters or grit from cut knees. My dad used to take Epsom Salts every
now and again but us kids were treated most cruelly ... Senna Pods were
steeped in hot water and we were made to drink the resulting liquid cold
every Friday night "to keep us regular" - 'orrible! To visit our doctor
(Dr. Nussbaum) cost between 2s.6d and 5s.0d so Chemists like Mr Petrie
were worth their weight in gold and had an enormous amount of knowledge
and sympathy too at times.

Just remembered there was
Parish's Food, think it was an iron tonic. We used to have half an
Aspirin crushed and mixed in with a spoonful of jam if we had a pain of
any kind. Plus, at times, some 'get on with it, you won't die'.
- Re: CHILDHOOD MEDICATION

I remember Mt Petrie also-was he Scottish? Many other people preferred Mt Petrie to the doctors, as Chris's mum.
- Re: CHILDHOOD MEDICATION
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 15-Apr-2011
Janice, the very mention of the
dreaded Senna Pods makes me shudder. We didn't have them indoors
thankfully, but the couple of times I went into the Isolation Hospital
with Scarlet Fever first and then suspected Diphtheria, we had these
horrible Pods inflicted upon us every night in an enamel mug - sometimes
going a bit rusty at the top! One boy in the ward, the first time I was
in there, used to tip
his into a plant. Only wish I'd had the courage. It made me feel sick to
even smell it. I saw them advertised on the tele the other day, and I
said ugh! to myself. ... more >>

What memories you have all
brought back! Mr Petrie was Scottish I think. I was always a little bit
in awe of him, although he was very nice. I too remember the half
aspirin crushed in a teaspoon of jam. Also, if I had a lot of wax in my
ears mum would lay me down on my side, put a teaspoon of some liquid (I
dread to think now what it might have been) in my ear to soften it and
then wrap a clean hanky
around a hairgrip (no cotton buds in those days). Whilst doing it she
always used to say "now don't jump if the doorbell rings"! Can you
imagine anyone doing that nowadays, but it worked. Men always seemed to
get boils then, my dad had them on the back of his neck quite regularly I
remember - very painful. ... more >>

Another medication we used in our
childhood was Vick Ointment. Mum used to rub it on our chest when we
had a cold, and I must admit we also put it up our nose when it became
blocked up. I understand nowadays that this not advisable as it damages
the membranes? Strangely enough they say if you have a persistent cough -
rub vick vapour rub on your feet at night and cover with socks before
you go to bed. It stops the coughing. Has anyone tried this? I would imagine a trip to the doctors would be more advisable if it persists. ... more >>

- Re: CHILDHOOD MEDICATION
by Michael Braden (Member 10097376) on 18-Apr-2011
If I may make a guess, Vic worked
by diffusion through the skin of the chest.(Like Nicotine patches
work)Presumably it can do the same with the soles of the feet, although I
imagine not so efficiently because the skin is much thicker.
