I thought of another place my Mother used and it was the hairdressers the name was Cluers, in the High St, they used to perm one's hair with these iron looking things attached to your hair and they weighed a ton, they would prop your head with pillars very often they would burn too.

  • Re: general.southall by Phyl Hutnell (Member 10234816) on 17-Feb-2011
My Mum went to Cluers too. I seem to recall that Mr Cluer was the trained hairdressed and Mrs C used to help him - not always very successfully. I used to sit with Mum whilst she had her hair permed, wired up to the machine.

Talking about the old uninhabited cottage, reminds me of a derelict house. Walking towards the police station, on the right just past Amsdens Newsagents, there was a pathway leading to a large derelict house-we believed this to be haunted. This was in the mid 1930's -ir was later demolished.

I found "Secrets of the Blitz: Revealed" a bit of an eye-opener with the Government secretly eavesdropping on the people of this country to investigate their morale - opening their letters and listening in to phone calls. If you google "Secrets of the Blitz: Revealed Channel 5 20 January 2011" the whole film is there if you can't watch it tomorrow morning.

What a shame the Pavilion has gone. That used to be the Cricket Pavilion, not that we ever used to go in there. At least I last saw it when it looked at its best from the outside in 2000. It had been coated with anti graffiti paint, and really looked good. The bowling green had already gone, but I can still see it now in my mind's eye.
