Lovely to see the old Harlington
Church on Southallboard20. Haven't seen it for years. We used to walk by
there through Harlington village when we lived close by for two years.
Harlington used to be a picturesque old village, and we had to put our
bans up in that church. I bet it's changed a lot now.

Funny that they replaced the
trams with trolleybuses. Then they got rid of trolleybuses as being
"inflexible", yet now want trams back!! Doesn't seem logical to me.

I am still working on finishing the web pages for Richard Meads third
book, but I have found time to upload a number of pictures of Southall
and Norwood Green, they can be found at the following URL:
http://www.my-ivefamily.me.uk/southall830/photogallery/index.html
Some of the pictures will be repeated in the website for RM's book, but will be of a smaller size.

Yvonne, I think that the
photograph of King Street is the end part, after you have passed the
Manor House grounds and the Dominion, then the long line of shops, the
corner is the turn before you get to Regina road. I think where the
trees are is where the church was with the Havelock opposite it. I
could be wrong, but others will know as well!
- Re: Pictures of Southall and Norwood Green

Yes, looking down Tudor road with
school at the bottom and St George's Church on the right hand side at
the top. That's where we sang our Easter hymns, and further round was
Price's long, high brick wall along the high street.

Great photos: I was married at St
George's Church in 1960 followed by reception at the Red Lion, a very
good 3-course meal, waitress service, my dad put £30 in the till for
free drinks which lasted until 10pm then there was a whip-round among
the guests to put more money in for the last hour, dancing to a 5-piece
band and all over by 11pm, none of this 'into the early hours' allowed
then!
What I would like to
know is where the lovely house that became The Australian Military
Hospital was. Also, where was the building that became The Institute,
Maypole Works? Does anyone know what an 'Institute' was for?

I remember seeing a tatty fence
right outside the Southall Norwood hospital when I did a Google street
tour a while ago. It looked awful. I've since looked up the British
History on line Yvonne, and the hospital was opened in 1935 on its
present site at the corner of the Green and Osterley Park Road, so I
could be wrong about a hospital being there in 1913!

Yes, i've seen them all now I

That photo on Southallboard19 of
Northcote Avenue in 1910 certainly brought back some memories for me.
The houses are exactly the same as I remember them when we lived there.
On the right-hand side of the road, nearly at the top lived a good
friend of my dad, and our family, a Dick Leach, who worked at the AEC
until the sixties at least. He was a Shop Steward at AEC, and had three
children, Ron, the
eldest, Iris (who emigrated to Australia in around 1947 after marrying
an Australian) and Norman - the youngest. Next door lived Arthur Pike,
another friend, but not sure about the names of his children. I do
remember they used to come to our house around Christmas time and play
cards with all of us and I always lost. We also used to have a sing song
while my mother played the piano. There was a small narrow alleyway
just past Dick Leach's house and my brother and his friends used to
climb up that wall with their feet and back edging up bit by bit. Not to
be outdone, I thought I'd have a go, but unfortunately when I got quite
a way up, I froze and couldn't move to get down again. My brother told
me to stay there while he got up underneath me. Gradually, I came down,
absolutely petrified until we reached the ground. That was a lesson I
didn't ever repeat again. I still think about it sometimes. and it still
fills me with dread! Memories. ... more >>

I typed in exactly what you said
Yvonne, and got southallboard19 straight away. However, to get back to
Southallboard18 it won't let me in unless I type Middlesex18 in Google.
Then to get to Southallboard19 I have to type www.flickr.com in Google.
It works for me, but I suppose everbody's computer is different. I
always breathe a sigh of relief when starting another board up!

Thank you. Do you know when
"Middlesex County Times & West Middlesex Gazette" ceased to be a

In the Lea Valley Experience, I
felt a little bit sad reading about the AEC at 2010 marking the
centenary celebration of the B type bus, which was also known as "Old
Bill" as many of them served on the front lines in France in WW1 as a
troop carrier. Many did not return, hence the saying BORN IN WALTHAMSTOW
DIED IN FRANCE. My dad was also in that war, but fortunately he was one
of the lucky ones who came back.

Going back to the Lea Valley
Experience and the Centenary celebrations of Britain's First British
Aviation flight by Alliott Verdon Roe on Walthamstow Marshes in 1909.
Although all you Plane Buffs will know all about this, I'd never heard
of him before. I wanted to know more about him and found in Google an
article in the Daily Mail "The Model Plane That Launched Britain's
Aircraft Industry." Mr Roe
was born in Salford in 1877. Lord Northcliffe, the owner of the Daily
Mail, offered a prize of £150 for the best design of a model aircraft
that could manage more than 50 feet to take place at Alexandra Palace on
15th April 1907. Roe's rubber-powered "Avro-planes" outflew everything
else reaching 100 ft or more, and he won all three prizes on offer.
After many hardships he eventually built a full-sized man-carrying
machine and took his biplane 75-150 ft through the air, on June 8th
1908, but only witnessed by the head carpenter and gate keeper at
Brooklands. The article states that although others were lauded as the
first to fly in England, the truth is that, technically, that prize
belonged to Roe. So now, I know a little bit more about Alliott Verdon
Roe.

Just as a PS, Alliott Verdon Roe
became Sir Edwin Alliott Vernon Roe OBE, FRAeS. Although he lived till
he was 81, he lost two of his sons killed in action while serving with
the Royal Air Force, Squadron Leader Eric Alliott Verdon- Roe aged 26 in
1941, and Squadron Leader Lighton Verdon-Roe DFC aged 22 in 1943.

"Every Saturday Morning, where do go,
Getting into mischief Oh deae NO!"
I went every Saturday to the Odeon-the above was the first two lines
of our song. If you thumb back through this site a few years, you will
find the whole song courtesy of Roy Couch.
The programme usually contained a cowboy film, a chapter of a serial,a disney cartoon, and the news.
If the hero gave the heroine a chaste kiss, this was greeted by catcalls.
One film comes to mind. The hero is with the heroine;s grandfather,
whila she gave an exhibition of great horsemanship. The grandad observed
"Yup, she can do most things a man can do.!
Shouts from the audience cited where this was incorrect!! ... more >>

The version we used to sing at the Odeon was:
We come along on Saturday morning
Greeting everybody with a smile
We come along on Saturday morning
Knowing it's well worth while
Every Saturday morning
Where do we go?
Getting into mischief
Oh dear no!
We come along on Saturday morning

Just been looking at my brother's
autobiography and being 5 years younger than me his version of the
Odeon song had changed once again. The first two and the last two lines
were the same, but the middle bit was:
"Good members of the GB club we all intend to be
Good citizens when we grow up and champions of the free etc. etc." His
favourite cowboys were Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Autry, and Roy Rogers.
His favourite cowboy film was "The Mark of Zorro" where the hero was
not only the fastest and deadliest with the gun, but also was an expert
with a long whip. He would use the whip to leave his trademark (the
letter Z) on the forehead of the villain. His best favourite however,
was the series starring Flash Gordon, a time traveller. Happy days! ... more >>

No Yvonne, it wasn't me that went
with my brothers to Southall Park to the crater. That was from my
brother David's autobiography - it was him and my other brother Bob who
ran up there after my dad came in from nightwork at AEC. I didn't doubt
David's account, as he had been a teacher most of his life.

I've just re-read Mr G.P.

beat the authorities to the site and made off with the tail fin. There

to leave Southall Grammar in 1945. By reading his account on BBC

Hi Ron Cox. It was nice to find a
friendly name on the AEC list of AEC staff with your comments. You
certainly brought back a memory for me about the jokes the older men
used to play on the younger ones. I can remember my dad telling us about
"the painting of the heels of shoes" when people were standing in a
line. There must have been other ones which I have forgotten. My dad
worked there until his retirement in 1966 - he came down from the Walthamstow AEC factory to Southall when they moved. ... more >>

Pauline, I left the AEC in 1967, although I didn't know your dad,I was a Toolroom apprentice.
Several men used to travel every day from Walthamstow to Southall on a
hired bus right up until the late sixties. The AEC was a good place to
work with a great group of characters, although I didn't always
apreciate it at the time.
That type of atmosphere at work doesn't exist today, there wasn't the pressures and stress of today.

Hi John - that was very
interesting about the travel facilities from Walthamstow to Southall
AEC. My parents didn't actually move to Southall until 1933 after my
brother Bob was born. I often wondered if he was still working at
Walthamstow or if he travelled down to Southall daily until they moved
there permanently. He worked there all his life and made some lifelong
friends. When I think of all the
walking most of the men did. Walking to work - home for dinner, and
then back again etc. No hopping in a car like we would now. My husband
used to talk shop with my dad as he too was a toolmaker all his life.
Can still remember that pungent smell of oil and grease. I miss it!

The only bomb to fall in
Southall Park, to the best of my knowledge was a V1, which fell one
night in the summer of 1944. I have good cause to remember this, because
it brought the ceiling in on my bed.(I was downstairs in the Morrison

I was most intrigued by Mr G.P.
Heyden's account of his WW2 experiences. I don't know anything about a
German bomber crashing near the gasworks, but do know about the
"buzz-bomb" crashing in Southall Park on 3rd July 1944.(Verified in
Dennis Upton's book). Thought you would be interested in my brother
David's autobiography (who died 2 years ago). He said when my dad came
home from nightwork at the
AEC, he told him and my other brother Bob that a doodle-bug had
exploded in Southall Park. "Bobby and I were over there in a flash. It
had made a huge crater at the bottom of which lay a huge mass of twisted
metal. The whole of the jet section was still intact, and we set about
dragging it out of the crater. It was very, very heavy, but we began
half carrying, half dragging it homewards! We struggled for about three
quarters of a mile, getting as far as Southall Town Hall traffic lights,
but found it too heavy to go any further. We left it in the gutter and
raced home to get help, but on our return someone had nipped in and
taken it. We were really disappointed. What a triumph it would have been
to have got it home and kept it. No amount of comics would have made me
part with a trophy like that!" ... more >>

I read that article by G.P.
Heydon and wasn't he lucky. He said he went to Liverpool to be
evacuated, with other children, to his cousins in Canada. They all spent
an uncomfortable night in a church hall, but learned that the ship that
had gone before them had been torpedoed and sunk, so they all had to
come back to London. The more I think about his name is that we had a
boy called Geoffrey Heydon
in our class at Southall Grammar in 1943. Don't know whether it is the
same person, but he did mention that he went to Tudor road Juniors. He
was also at Heston Farm with several of us from Southall in the school
holidays in 1945. This particular boy was very good looking with curly
fair hair and was a bit of a daredevil! He was the one who tried milking
the cows in the orchard while we were there, and offering some to us
girls, but we declined! I wonder if it was him? ... more >>

found it very interesting to read about the crankshafts and the 35

Hi Yvonne it should be on the Southall 8 board's photostream - sorry it does not show a page.
I don't know how that board appears to you but if I sort recent it
appears as the latest one on the page. It is autotagged
CrackerjacksThere is a message on my screen saying that "Your free
account will only display the most recent 200 things you've uploaded.
Anything beyond 200 will remain hidden from view until you either delete newer items, or upgrade to a Pro account."
However, I presumed it would just drop off the oldest pic but mayve tgis is why mine can't be viewed.
As for details that is sadly what I lack. I only have my Dad's name very
approximate date and name of the band - I was just hoping it migt rting
a bell with someone - possibly spot a relative. Let me know if you
manage to see it - if not I will try again. Best wishes.Jan ... more >>

Never mind, I will keep searching. I have come across the guitarist Vic

- Re: catholic southall
by Colin Harris (Member 10240389) on 16-Sep-2010
I am in the process of scanning
Rcihard Mead's third book using OCR in preparation to creating a website
for it, the following is what I have scanned so far:
"The beginning of the Catholic Church in Southall Green came when Mr
Thomas of the Manor House, allowed a Catholic Priest from Hayes to hold
mass in the Barn' on Sunday mornings. He later donated a plot of land
next to the Manor on which was
built a small church (St Anselms). This carried on under Father Buckle
and Father Ward until the new St Anselms was built (more later) when the
site became a school."
I hope to have a completed site by the end of the month and will post the URL then.
I have also been trying to make sense of the Spitfire crash at the
Gaaworks, it would be logical that it may not have been common knowledge
when it happened and I think Meads probably sourced the story from a
report in one of the local papers at the time of the repatriation of the
pilot's body.
I asked my father (now aged 87) whether he knew anything about the
Spitfire, but he said no, he does however clearly recall the bomb that
dropped near the Palace cinema, he was in there at the time and
remembers the ruptured gas main shooting high in the air. My father also
remembers the V1 that fell on Regina Road, he was walking in Belmont
Avenue with his friend Denny Pickett when the engine cut out, he says
they both just lay on the ground and prayed. ... more >>

With the greatest of respect, all
the texts are a mishmash of incorrectly spelt, unfinished paragraphs in
some kind of short hand. Please speak in a way that everyone can
understand. Now, I lived at the prefabs in Rectory Park Avenue,
Northolt and went to St Anselms Catholic Primary School (1951 - 1957)
run by the great Mr Moore with teachers Miss Power, Mr Murphy(Spud), Mr
Trainer, Miss Wood, Sr
Benigna, Sr Mary Carmel, Fr Ward, Fr Scanlon, Mr O'Regan, Mr Parker etc.
Pupils going there were Mary Creaby, Tom Creaby, Teresa Collins,
Christopher Fleckney, Ian Davis, Valentine Mulkerns,Brian MacNamara,
Stephan Wecinski, Patricia Campbell, Peggy Moss, Georgina Moore,Astrid
Connery, Brian Elsworth, Sydney Frape, Nigel Wilson (went to St
Benedicts, Ealing Abbey School), Terry Moreton, Richard Galley (Me) and
my brother John Galley, Lyn Clarke, Malcolm Moore to name but a few.
Does anyone remember Prices Bakery off the Uxbridge Rd, the CIU Club
Uxbridge rd where I learnt to tap dance. There was that little box cafe
on Southall railway bridge where you could get bread and dripping for a
halfpenny. The fish and chip shop in Southall was the best in South

I have created two websites which are basically transcriptions of books
written by Richard J Meads, which contain recent historys of Southall,
the URL's are:
http://www.my-ivefamily.me.uk/growingup/index.html
http://www.my-ivefamily.me.uk/maypole/index.html
Hope these are of interest to some of you.
As background I was born and brought up in Southall in the 1950's only
moving away in 1998, then only across the canal to Hayes. My
grandparent's had the surnames Harris (obviously), Ive, Morris and
Gurdler, all of whom either lived or had children who lived in Southall.
Additionally one of my great grand parents had the surname Dyckhoff,
and lived in Regina Road, having moved there from Heston around 1900-10.

- Re: History of Southall

Dennis,
I have tried to find more about the Wellington crash, there doesn't seem
to be any mention of it in any of the publications I have on Southall.
However on checking lostbombers.co.uk there is one possible aircraft,
the date is earlier (Richard Mead's does seem at times to mix up events
and dates) and the location is not correct, but this may be connected
with where the crew landed rather than the aircraft.
The plane crashed on the 14 November 1940, details in the database are as follows:
"Serial Range R3150 - R3179. 30 Wellington Mk.1C. Part of a batch of 100
Wellington Mk.1C. R3150-R3179; R3195-R3239; R3275-R3299. Delivered by
Vickers (Weybridge) between April and June 1940. R3298, Mk.V Prototype,
with Bristol Hercules 111 (Type 421), later Hercules 111 (Type 436).
R3299, Mk.V 2nd Prototype with Hercules V111 (Type 407), later Hercules
X1. R3217; R3225; R3234; R3273 converted to Mk.XV1. R3221 converted to
Mk.11. Airborne from Newmarket. Abandoned 0110 14Nov40 after running out
of fuel and crashed near Hampton, Middlesex. One crew member reported
slightly injured. Sgt F.Swatton Sgt J.A.Bowler Sgt Andrews Sgt
R.W.Powell Sgt W.R.A.Dick Sgt A.Macnab This entire crew were destined to
be killed the night of 25/26Nov40. See: R1176 "
As the crow flies Hampton would only be about 5 miles to Southall, if
the plane was still under power when the crew baled out then this would
not be an unreasonable distance for it to have continued.

Yes Yvonne there is a third book,
I have a copy of that as well, just need to find the time to scan it
using OCR software then I can post that on the web as well.
In answer to your question about the Harris's the names you mention are
not related to me, my lot were late-comers to Southall only arriving in
1929 when my grandfather and his children moved into the home of his
second wife in Western Road, having previously lived at Hayes End.
I am sure that a number of people on this board will know my late
mother's Ive family who lived at the bottom of Northcote Avenue, if you
didn't have your dustbin emptied by one of them, you would probably
would have brought fruit and veg from Peter or Brian sometime or maybe a
car from Brian (Chunky) when he had his showrooms in the Green. ... more >>

Denis,
I think the Spitfire story is probably correct in terms of date as there
was a Canadian squadron at Northolt at that time, the fact Richard
Meads gives specific names for those involved suggests it did actually
happen. As the squadron was based locally I would assume the intial
burial took place in the area, either Northolt or Southall, RM says the
body was exhumed and returned to Canada after the war, perhaps this was reported in the local papers? ... more >>

Yes Colin, we all knew Mrs Ive
and their family, as we lived opposite them in Northcote Avenue.
Remember them most for their greengrocery business. Mrs Ive used to make
toffee apples during the war and we kids loved them. She was very
generous to us all, as we were all hard up in those days. I loved
watching them get their horse and cart all spruced up with ribbons on
and the brasses polished, probably
for a show. We also knew Mrs Jones and their family (who was Mrs Ive's
aunt). Violet Jones used to babysit for us during the war when my dad
was on nightwork at the AEC. ... more >>

Yvonne, I rely don't remember the exact date, but it would be more likely 1944.
I had my eighth Birthday in May 1945 right at the end near VE Day. I
remember the celebrations in Queens Road and a big bonfire in the
street.
The only other vivid memories of the war were, the time when we children
were sent to the shelter at Featherstone Road school, and a huge
explosion occurred so close by that shock could be felt through your body.
My Dad was in the RAF and my Mother worked at Heston Airport, my Mother
and I were living with my Uncle and Aunt in Queens Road for the duration
of the war.
My Uncle had been in WW1 although born in Southall served in the Argyle and Sutherland.
One other experience was when my Mother and I were visiting my
Grandmother in Highgate, we were at the bottom of the hill and my
Grandmother lived near the top. The air raid siren went off and we ran
up the hill and got in the house just as a bomb went off nearby. The
street outside was scattered with broken glass and my Grandmothers house
was damaged and they had to have the front of the house supported by a
large wooden prop.

by John Taylor (Member 10248548) on 10-Sep-2010
The first couple of years of the
war,I spent as an evacuee in a little village in Sussex. The only Blitz I
experienced in Southall was from the buzz-bombs,which were pilot-less
mini planes packed with explosives, and the much bigger V2 rockets.
I seem to recall a cinema getting hit, sort of out of the blue,no
aircraft or air-raid warning. And people said it was a land mine that was
dropped with a time-delayed
fuse. Maybe that was put about by the government to stop the panic they
expected when people heard about the rockets. There was absolutely no
defense against them.And no warning.
We used to watch the buzz-bombs coming toward us in the sky,and you
could pretty well tell if you were in trouble, depending on the angle
they were at when the motor cut out and it began to fall.
We had an Anderson shelter in the back garden on Cornwall Ave.and my
brother was watching one approach that cut out before it got
overhead, and he dove head first into the shelter.I forget where the bomb
landed, but it wasn't too far away.
Our fighter pilots used to risk their lives trying to tip the bombs over
with their wing-tips,while they were still over the English
channel. They were afraid to fire at them because the explosion would
probably damage the fighter.
I had three brothers in the army, and two others that were evacuated with
me.My parents and my sister lived through the London blitz. We lived
close to Surrey Docks and the place was pretty much flattened during the
non-stop night raids,I think it went on for twenty seven nights
straight. The Nazis just kept dropping more bombs, aiming at the previous
nights fires.

John Taylor and Yvonne-bombing of
cinema. The only case I know of in Southall was in 1940, when during an
air raid one evening, a bomb fell on Barratt's Shoe shop next to the
Palace Cinema, which killed two girls(the Purcell sisters). They had been
to the cinema, and it was deduced they were sheltering from the rain in
the doorway whil waiting for a bus. Dolly Purcell had been in my class
at North Road, and like
me had recently started at Dormers Wells. The only land mine that I
recall in my part of Southall was in Ascot Gardens.

Although I was sorry to hear that
The Three Horseshoes has been boarded up, I was even more sad to read
the awful accounts on Google of just how badly it had deteriorated.
Then, I remembered the very first and last time that I went in there. My
dad was very ill in Southall Norwood hospital in September 1971, and I
took my aunt and uncle to The Three Horseshoes for a drink - we all
needed one. I still
remember what a nice pub it was, plenty of character with pleasant
company, and a welcome feeling from the landlords. I didn't have any
occasion to go back to Southall after my dad died, (apart from a brief
visit in 2000), but I still retain that good memory of The Three
Horseshoes in the Southall that I once knew. ... more >>

When I watched the film on "The
Blitz" on Yesterday freeview, I noticed that on 7th September 1940 - the
day the Luftwaffe elected to make the first savage bombardment on the
city of London - there was a scene of a beautiful sunny Autumn day and
an Icecream man with "ELDORADO" on his icecream cart. This reminded me
that on a similar sunny Autumn day Len Goddard witnessed an Eldorado
Icecream man giving all
his icecream away, and pedalling off up the high street as the first
siren went off on 3rd September 1939 in Southall! How life changed then.

I'd forgotten all about the ice
cream men shaking their bells. Must admit that the only ice cream bike I
can remember in Northcote Avenue was Tony's. I think he was an Italian,
and a big chap, and his ice cream was lovely - home made. We very
rarely had them, but I can remember one hot summer's night when we
children were all in bed, turning our pillows over and over to find a
cool bit, my mum brought
us all up an ice cream cone. I never ever forgot it. The only vendors I
can remember ringing their bells were the muffin men at Bankside. Now
that's really going back! ... more >>

Thanks for the tip Dilys. I've
just read the two pages in the "Daily Mail" on the "Blitz" and my god
it's absolutely heart breaking. It makes you realise what hell it was
for London and the major cities. I still reiterate what I've already
said - how proud I am of the people of this country during that terrible
time.

There were still a lot of wicked people about even then.Looters, robbers and worse.
I remember an incident when I was about 3 yrs old. We were living in
Beresford Rd. House converted to two flats and we were in the top one.
Every night I used to go down to say goodnight to the couple downstairs
who I called Auntie Daisy and Uncle Harry. No lights on.One night a man
was standing on the stairs and grabbed
me and of course I screamed and my dad came rushing out. The man fled,
they think he was a burglar Ever since I've been terrified of the
dark. Can still see the scene of the open front door and my dad rushing
out but of course couldn't see anyone owing to the blackout. ... more >>
