I once owned an LP called "Beauty and the Beat" - Peggy Lee and George
Shearing - and would dearly love to own a copy once again. Do any of
you know where/how/if I might be able to get a copy of this album on CD
please? I'd be eternally grateful if any of you could help!

Yvonne-talking of large carp
reminded me that mt late dad was a keen angler. He was a bus conductor,
and he and his driver,Frank Ailsby used to go fishing together. Frank
caught a 12lb Mirror Carp, which was cased and hung in the messroom
upstairs at Hanwell(Southall) Garage. This was caught in a gravel pit in
the Cowley area.

Len: Thank you so much! The last
time I checked to see if this LP had been put onto CD was at a Virgin
store in Bristol a few years ago and the assistant stared blankly at me,
had never heard of Peggy Lee and George Shearing, didn't know anything
about LPs being made into CDs etc. I've put my order in and am so
looking forward to listening to the magic sounds once again.

Yvonne-Heston farm and horses-that brings back a few memories. During
the summer of 1950, while a srudent, I worked for a few weeks on Heston
Farm. One of my jobs was to lead the horse pulling a field rake. The
horse knew I was new, and played up-when we left one side of the field
he would be very slow-three quarters of the way across, when he spotted
lush grass ahead, he would suddenly accelerate.
The farm worker i/c-a man called Fiddler used to curse the horse and I
in equal measure! What made his day was when the horse stepped on my
foot-mercifully in soft ground ... more >>

I also worked at Heston farm
during my school holidays in August 1945, picking up windfall apples and
stringing up tomatoes. "Fiddler" was also there when I was, and I
remember a beautiful shire horse that we all loved, and we stroked him
whenever we could. The part that I remember, however, is unlike
Michael's account. This poor horse had a hole in the part of his leg
just above the hoof, or perhaps
it was a part of the hoof, and all the flies used to get in it. The
horse was continually stamping his hoof on the ground to try and get rid
of them. It was obviously an infection. Whenever we tried to tell
"Fiddler" we were told to clear off. That memory has stuck with me for
the past 75 years because I used to get so worried about the horse. The
happier memories, however, was the sight of the wonderful Shire horses
along the towpath at Bankside when I was a child, pulling their cargo
along. They were magnificent beasts. ... more >>

l remember that West Middlesx was
"horse country" into the early '50s. Even by Castlbar Park station
on the W Ealing side of the W Ealing/Hanwell border, there were stables
until about the 1953 coronation and United Dairies still delivered milk
to the local schools by dray horse and cart. Until the mid 50s, west
of Greenford and especially around Yeading and down the canal to Norwood
top locks and Brentford
was a horse lovers' delight. Also Yiewsley and up the canal to
Harefield and the Midlands too. This all stated to disappear when the
area by the Civil Engineer got developed and also the Yeading Willow
Tree Lane area. All canal and horse trader gypsy communities destroyed

No Pauline, l was only born in
'47. But l do remember being told that oldest road in Middlesex runs
across top of the ridge just south of old BEA Sports Ground (crosses
Ruislip Road at rightangles at shooting range) > > Sharvel Lane in
some parts, Charville Lane in others - ran from Salisbury Plain to E
Anglia
- Re: horses
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 21-Aug-2010
The road is Iron Age, so
pre-Roman. The other intersting old trackway is Trumpers Lane Hanwell,
crossed G.W.R. Southall - Brentford line (there was a "Trumpers
Crossing Halt" for a while), then canal cut the old lane through, but it
continued across what is now Osterley Park to Heston, then Longford and
so on. Very little of this one is still traceable but some bits are,

I can remember the little bottles
of milk we used to have at breaks in the morning at Tudor Road school
in the thirties. They were often kept in the school playground in
crates. In the winter the ice used to 'break out' at the top of the
bottle as it was so frozen, and in the summer ugh! My brother, who came
to the school in the early forties, said that their milk was put on the
radiators to warm up. He
felt it was one of Miss Hannett's personal vendettas against children.
They all hated it, but were forced to drink it. I remember later on
there were 'milk monitors'. ... more >>

School milk came in one third of a
pint bottles (milk was never sold in gills in England. You couldn't
buy these third of a pints from the dairies or the milkman - they only
had pint and half pints. Now milkmen only deliver to about 2 x houses
in any road whereas once nearly every house........... Supermarkets
of course have taken this livelihood > Bulls Bridge Tescos is

I remember the cardboard milk
tops with the pull tab in the middle. We used them for making wool
bobble balls. Wound the wool round and through til the hole was complete
filled - tied the middle off and then cut along the rim - hey presto, a

Warmed on the donkey boilers in the huts in winter - made me heave!

Yes, I too remember making the
little bobbles and the tacks on top of the cotton reel. We also made
much larger balls of different colours. Probably used the Shredded Wheat
boxes for our discs - we seemed to use them for everything, especially
drawing on the oblong bits that separated the shredded wheat. This
talking of knitting reminds me of a pullover that I once started doing
for my dad when I was
still at home. I used to knit in my lunch-hour at EMI when I first
started there. I don't know what went wrong, but it just seemed to grow
and grow. The Supervisor used to eye it each day, and remarked how nice
it looked. Eventually, I realised my dad and someone else could have got
inside this pullover. The supervisor's husband was a rather portly man,
so she bought it from me and was very pleased with it. That was the
first and last pullover that I ever knitted. ... more >>

Thanks Yvonne and Len
In the early hours of VJ morning(~3am) i was awakened ny a commotion
and the noise of banging trays. I looked out of the window, and there
was a procession of people in dressing gowns and the like singing and
shouting-they shouted up to me "The war is over!!" At that stage we knew
nothing of the atomic bonb!
Not many days afterwards, my Uncle amd Aunt learned that their only son Phillip-a civilian worker in Singapore as had been my Uncle until retirement, had died in a prison camp in Celebes.
When the Japanese invaded, he just managed to get his wife out. She was a
beautiful malaysian girl. When we visited them, I met Gladys, and at
the age of 16 was smitten! ... more >>

Len, your entry has left me very
thoughtful. There are only a couple of years difference in our ages,
but how different our lives on VJ day 1945.It was but three weeks to my
17th birthday I had left Southall Tech in that year, and had a job. In
the celebrations the next day, dad bought me half a pint of shandy from
Plough, and I really thought I had arrived. You were on the other side
of the world, having been on active service against a very nasty enemy. I hope the current generation realise what they owe men like you ... more >>

You certainly jogged my memory
Yvonne with your talk of "shucking the peas on the back door step" and
"stringing and slicing the runner beans". That used to be my job. It's
strange about memories - I can see the whole of our garden now, with the
archway of pink roses and the garden further on. The Anderson shelter
sitting comfortably right at the far end, with the chicken's coop and
the cockerels on the
other side. Your gardens in West Avenue were certainly very long. Much
bigger altogether than ours in Northcote Avenue. I used to survey them
all from our back bedroom window. There was a young lad at the back of
us in West Avenue who was always playing his gramophone out in the
garden, and the last bit I remember was "and keep the red flag flying". I
think his name was "Woods". I do remember the cabbages we grew, or
tried to grow. I can remember picking all the caterpillars off them and
squashing them under a large brick. The horseradish also grew well.
Memories! ... more >>

Yvonne: The Pier at
Weston-super-Mare is still closed. It was due to open June/July time
and is still a work in progress. In face, the whole of the main seafront
has been a terrible mess this year due to building an extra sea defence
wall, replacing old sewers, and to add to the mess the whole of the
lawned area around the fountain by the entrance to the Pier was dug up
and is still unfinished. Traders/hotelliers
complaining at 30% drop in business this summer and the Sovereign
Centre car park is down 25%. We don't mind, give us plenty of parking
spaces to choose from! Everytime we go into the town we think 'Well,
it'll be nice when it's finished' but it won't be in time for this
year's summer hols. ... more >>

Supply Co, an arm of TW, and I recall he was a railway enthusiast. Same

Just had a wonderful day out at The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage
Centre and experienced a taxi-run by the Hurrican Bomber Just Jane. To
see and hear all four Rolls Royce Merlin engines in action was quite
something. The rest of the centre is very interesting too.If any of you
are ever in the area I would really recommend it.

Poulton and Noel

Does anyone have any information on the company Poulton and Noel which
was in Bridge Road, Southall? I believe it manufactured potted meats
amongst other things.
My Grandad worked there in the 1940s or 1950s and I have a photograph of
a Christmas "do" there. According to Wiki, it was taken over by
Batchelors. I think my Grandad continued to work there. My mum thinks
they did tinned baby food too.
I can't find anything on the web so any information would be gratefully received. ... more >>

Pauline: You mentioned Scotts
Emulsion and it started the memories rolling. I was given Scotts
Emulsion as a child, remember it as a thickish white liquid, probably
equivalent of today's Cod Liver Oil capsules. Also given at various
times Parishes Food (think this was a liquid iron tonic) and when we had
colds/flu symptoms were given Fennings Fever Cure. Does anyone
remember Fennings? It was a clear
liquid and tasted ok until the last bit of swallowing and then would
make me shudder. Most other times my mother would use Mr Petrie's own
'brews' because the doctor cost money. Anyone remember Mr Petrie the
Chemist? ... more >>

Dr. Browns Chlorodine. You diluted a few drops in water. My mum gave a
couple of drops to my baby brother when he had a bad chest and she
thought she'd killed him because he slept all night. My daughter used to
work in a chemist in the broadway and before they withdrew it in it's
original form druggies used to buy it by the bottle. Also cough mixture
and tonics made up by
the chemist always seemed to work much better than any you can buy
today.Mr Peel the chemist in North Parade used to make a lovely

Sorry - It was during the early
1950s that I worked for Mr Peel (put 10 years onto my age by hitting the

working in the chemist with only one full-timer, I didn't actually like
Mr Peel so didn't stay longer than the school hols.

Hi,
I’m Roger, my dad was the chemist at 13 North Parade, and sadly he died in 1996.
We, the Peel family, lived above the chemist shop from 1950(ish) to
1957(ish). I have fond schoolboy memories of North Parade, playing on
the grassed area at the back by the blocks of flats, Tennyson, Elgar and
Purcell. I remember the ‘plane crash, and going to see the fair in
Southall Park. As an aside,
my Dad has poor staff relations, and throughout his life often fell out
with staff. I remember Christine as a long serving member of staff.
Happy days.

- Re: home movies

Thanks johnwendy for your kind
advice. Just wanted to say that I have just finished reading a paperback
"A Little Boy's War" by Roy Bartlett - recommended by Dilys. My
youngest grandson bought it for my birthday later this month. Although
it's not about Southall - the family actually lived close to South
Ealing station. I didn't even know there was a station at South Ealing!
It's such a lovely account
by a young boy who was 9 years old when WW11 began, and recaptures life
as it was then. I'd forgotten they used to paint white lines at the
bottom of trees and poles in the road so that we could see them in the
blackout, and actually smelt that rubber smell when we first tried on
the gasmasks at school. It's very funny in parts and upsetting in
others, but when I finished it I felt so proud of the people of this
country and how they all coped during that terrible time. We certainly
won't forget those memories. ... more >>

It wasn't just trees - it was
also kerbs, lamp posts, pillar boxes, etc. and cars had to have their
bumpers, mudguards and running boards painted white, according to
google. One bit that rather amused me, although not funny really was
that the New Forest ponies were given zebra-like stripes to protect them
from traffic. This didn't work, however, and they had to be moved to
more isolated pastures.

At the outbreak of war, the USA ambassador to the UK was a Senator
Kennedy,JFK's dad. When the bombing started on London, he said to the
President that the people of London wouldn't be able to stand this for
many days. History doesn't tell us what he said when we going strong
years later, if a bit battered.
Gas masks-when in the air raid shelters at Dormers
Wells, and we had a gas mask drill, a favourite trick was to take ones
hands and close the flaps where we breathed out-then exhaled strongly-it
made the most gorgeous raspberry! ... more >>

Pauline, So glad you enjoyed A
little Boys War as much as I did. Yesterday watched a video which was
lant to me by a man we met here from Hounslow. Called London can take it
By the Imperial war Museum Collection. Watched it with my two grandsons
aged 11 and 9 and the thing that they picked up on which I didn't
notice was the fact that everyone was smoking. Very interesting video.
Still available at
Amazon.Very nostalgic for those who remember those days and very
informative for the youngsters who have never known war and hopefully
never will. ... more >>

the other grandson to buy that from Amazon for my birthday!! "A Little
Boy's War" was also ordered from there. My eldest gandson knows more
about WW11 and all the battles than I do, but they don't know the
individual accounts that we know.

shelters - we had tham at Drayton Manor in Hanwell too. They were
very heavily re-inforced and were demolished about the time of the Cuba

enormous iron weight that it used to swing at them, but they only gave
way a few fragments at a time.

The programme you reminded us
about on ITV1 yesterday "Countrywise" was very interesting Yvonne. Fancy
all our Art treasures being transported to the Welsh caves! Churchill
was determined that Hitler wasn't going to get his hands on our Old
Masters. They certainly were taken great care of, having heating on at
times to keep the temperature stable. I was quite sad though hearing
about the gentleman who
was evacuated during the war - can't remember where it was now - but he
said although he wasn't treated badly, he wasn't loved by anyone. He
said it twice. It reminded me of that lovely film "Goodnight Mister Tom"

Sheila-interested that you lived in Shrubbery Road- I lived in North

my piano teacher Miss Feys lived there.

Michael,I lived in Shrubbery Road
too - grew up with Sheila. The Cripps were a big family, including
Mavis, Stan who married Gladys and had daughters Carol and Gwen. Yes,
Miss Fay was the piano teacher. The Shanksters were also a big family.
We had an Anderson shelter in our back garden, and my Dad, being a
decorator, wallpapered it inside to make it cosy. There were two brick
shelters in the road,
the one Sheila slept in at the back of the White Hart and another one at
the other end of the road. Yes, Sheila, they did have their own smell!
We used to creep in them to play sometimes during the day. ... more >>

I did receive a copy of the
Imperial War Museum's Official Collection "London Can Take It" for my
birthday, and have just finished watching the Video. As I was only just 8
years old when the war started, although I remember lots of things
about it living in Southall, I wasn't aware at that time of the
devastation that London and other large cities were going through. The
DVD shows seven different wartime
films, and the community spirit, the neighbourliness, and the kindness
really shines through in those dark days. I must admit I was quite
shocked to see the devastation of Manchester after being bombed for two
consecutive nights on December 22nd & 23rd 1940.
I then read up an account by Ernie Pyle, a World War 11 correspondent,
who said that at 4pm on September 7th 1940, London was bombed by a
massive air attack until 6pm and two hours later was bombed again until
4.30 the following morning. The whole of London was alight. This carried
on for 57 days day and night. The Blitz finally ended in May 1941. I
just thought to myself how ever did they manage to survive all this, and
still carry on. What wonderful people! ... more >>

The map of Cowley and the River
Colne on Southallboard10 certainly brought back a lot of memories for
me. My husband and his three partners had an Engineering business for
over 25 years in Cowley on the banks of the River Colne. It was a
picturesque drive past the cherry orchards, through Iver village - when
royalty lived there. There was a small humpback bridge (not the main one
which is still in Iver
Lane), but a smaller one where you had to give way, with a Trust house
at the side. When the new road was built it wasn't used again. The river
Colne was lovely in the early sixties, and I used to take my daughters
there sometimes and just sit on the grass by the side of the river and
watch the swans and their cygnets swim by. The water was so clear that
you could see the bottom with small fish in there. There was a listed
pub "The Malt Loaf" on the opposite side of the road with the Grand
Union canal running alongside. Always plenty of workmen sitting outside
with their pints in their lunch hour enjoying the view. Unfortunately,
as the estate grew, and more cars appeared, plus a block of flats built
on the opposite of the river, lots of stuff ended up being thrown into
the water. The swans disappeared, plus the river became dirtier. Maybe
it's changed again now, but they were very happy days. ... more >>

Pauline,
More memories! Do you(or anyone) remember The Paddington Packet
Boat, by the canal. My old friend,David Wyatt, had his wedding
reception there. At one stage, a friend asked if David would like a
drink from the bar-David replied " A pint of Mother in law"-when asked
what tat was David replied "an Old and Bitter !" David and his wife Maud
are still going strong.

Yvonne - please don't think I'm
trying to be clever, but I asked my grandson exactly what he does when
he starts a new southallboard. He says he uses Google to type in
www.flickr.com and then presses enter which takes you into the Yahoo
page. The only thing which occurred to me when I did it on my own was,
is anyone clicking on 'sign in' at the very top of the page on the
computer (as I might have
done) instead of clicking 'sign in' on the top of the white page of
Flicker itself. Once you've done that the oblong page comes up to fill
in which you have given all the details already. It's only a thought. My
grandson said "if you're not getting into Flicker first you can't do
it." That's when he was giving me my instructions. I'm quite computer
illiterate, so only hope it helps. ... more >>

When visiting SOUTHALL on Monday I went to North Road - when I lived
in Grove Terrace (just off North Road). As a child I remember the SMITHY
who used to work at the back of MR BROWN's house. He used to re-shoe
the horses that were brought to the CATTLE MARKET on a Wednesday. It
was facinating to watch him - does anyone else remember him?? I just
wish I knew his name. There are flats & an off ice on the site of his workshop now. Chris xx ... more >>

I never went to see the Smithy
but I did go to theMarket where the horses weresold. As I recall it was

buying and selling.
I think Southall market was 2nd oldest in Middx
after Brentford.

Chris, I remember the blacksmiths
very well. We used to go round there and stand in the doorway to watch
him shoe the horses. Will never forget that smell. The market is still
going. We took a couple of our grandsons there a few years back and they
were fascinated by the horses and donkeys. I think I've said before
that my brother tells me he used to be paid sixpence to drive the pigs
from the market to the
slaughter house in the High Street when he was a boy. Mr Avery was the
baker, and he had a big old coal fired oven in the bakehouse out the
back of his shop. Later it became Woodfords and Mrs Woodford used to run
the shop. ... more >>

I beleive Southall's Wednesday
Horse Market was given the charter to operate by Queen Elizabeth First. I
can remember my granfather's brother Daniel buying pigs, slauthering
and selling them to Walls. They took the whole pig but not pay for the
head. I went to bakery college with Mr Woodfords son, in the shop was
the many cups that the bakery won, including The Renshaws Cup, a well
respected award in the trade.

It was interesting to read that
Southall Market stopped horse trading three years ago today. Michael
Lovelace, from the firm that ran the market explained that the
retirement of his two partners, Richard Steel 89, and Anthony Lovelace
77, led to the market's closure. He said it had been part of his life
for 20 years, but wouldn't be practical to run this type of business on
his own. He thought the
business would have been brought to its knees had it continued as
dealers would have baulked at converting their lorries to comply with
new Transport for London vehicle emissions regulations being introduced
the next year. ... more >>

As we've been talking a lot about
bread, I find it a bit confusing when I read official notes that bread
was not rationed during the war. My brother worked with a Price's baker
at Tudor road on a Saturday morning and he would have been about 13
years old (1948-9). He states "Bread was still rationed at this time,
and families were issued with 'bread units' that were cut out and
retained by the baker.
There was even a notice on the side of the cart saying "THE BAKER WILL
EXPLAIN YOUR BREAD ALLOWANCE DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT." I can't remember
when it was rationed, can anyone else remember it? ... more >>

My brother bought a house in
Ranelagh Road when he got married in about 1954, and they lived there
for several years before moving to Hayes. My brother is now a widower,
88 years old and lives in Goring, Sussex. The Slater family lived in St
George's Avenue, where my sister and her family lived. I believe the
last of the Slater's who had the shop in the Broadway died fairly
recently. Sheila, do you
remember when your Aunt Rose from Ruskin Road took us for ice cream at
the ABC restaurant, next door to Woolies? They served it in silver
coloured dishes, and we thought that was really grown up. There was a
very good fish 'n chip shop in the Broadway, about opposite Evans, and
we used to go there once a week - they wrapped it in newspaper - and I
used to be fascinated by the electric chipper machine - potatoes in and
chips came out. All the old memories come flooding back don't they. ... more >>

Hi Josie,regarding the
police, sore subject for us,called them many many times in the last 2
years or so around Ruskin Rd,we were some nights very lucky and
"honoured" with a fleeting visit by a couple of female community police
officers, but to be truthful they were as useful as chocolate tea cups as
the saying goes.We havnt moved far,but thankfully out of Ealing
Borough,takes us about 15-20mins when
we visit the care home in Southall,so we're thankfully in and out like a
flash.Does anyone remember the go kart circuit that was in Southall

then changed for Ealing Broadway; then a bus to the Police Station -
walked down to the Market area (I used to work there on a Saturday

(where I was born). Then North Rd School - we went in the school &
had a short tour! Down the School
Passage turned right to the Town Hall & then down South Rd to
Randolph Rd (where my in-laws lived from 1935 - 1975). Back along South

Yes Keith, there was an ABC at
Ealing Broadway opposite the station, and you've just rekindled a memory
of many years ago. I had just started a new job in 1946 at an Insurance
company in Ealing, and my family had booked a holiday on a house-boat
in Leigh-on-sea, so I had to stay with my aunt and uncle at their radio
shop in Wood Green for the fortnight. This was a 22 station journey from
Ealing broadway and I
used to pop into the ABC for a tea before I started on my journey - I
remember they did a very good Welsh rarebit! I can still remember the
sweltering heat on that train, and I ended up after the fortnight with
tonsillitis and my cousin having to take me home as I felt so ill.
Fortunately my family were returning home that day. ... more >>

Hi Chris, so glad to hear you
enjoyed your trip back to Southall. I know that some of it is pretty bad
now, but there is lots still good, with good people. I think it depends
where you actually live. Where we are is OK, and I have to say we have
found our local Neighbourhood Police great, but I do understand how
frustrated some people must be. I think if we had lived other than where
we do, we would have
moved out years ago. We have family and friends who live just a few
miles away, in the Ashford/Sunbury area, and it's a different world. ... more >>

The ABC's Bakery was near
Morrington Cresent London. The managers were John and Peter Wensel, who
after leaving ABC, part of the Weston Group of Bakeries, started their
own company in Pinner with several shops through out West London.
I think that the ABC had the only Roll Plant in London that produced Kiaser Rolls.
As a Bakery Technologist I spent many hours working in both Companies.

Hiya
Robert Cordery is my paternal Gt Gt Grandfather. His son John is my Gt
Grandfather and his son, William, is my Grandad. My mum, Ada, is
William's daughter and is alive and well and living in Hampshire - 89
years old.
She lived in Clarence Street with my nan and grandad both before and
after she married in 1944. Mum worked at Ticklers during the war (a
"preserved" occupation she says
LOL!!) then worked at both Kearley and Tonge and Scotts Emulsion with a
little stint at Quaker Oats. She moved from Clarence Street to Hayes
in 1956. If anyone remembers my mum please let me know. She had a
brother, Bill, also known as Ginger cos of his red hair. Sadly Bill
passed away a few years ago - he would be 67 now.
I have many memories of Southall - went to Featherstone infant and
junior school and then Southall Grammar. I met my hubby in Southall WMC
and we married at St Anselms Church. We then lived in Wentworth Road.
We all now live in Hampshire. ... more >>

Message to Pauline Sykes: I've
just found your entry regarding living in Northcote Avenue posted 13
July. We moved to 161 sometime around 1952 from Faraday Road (Golf Links
Estate) because it was a slightly bigger house. I can't remember the
names of many families who lived there at the time but Marks family
lived next door, later replaced by the Hill family. Ives lived opposite,
Clarks lived on the
corner, Browns lived on opposite corner (always celebrated NY by dancing
in the street at midnight). I went to Dormers Wells school until 1954
then found work in the Civil Service in London, married and moved away
in 1960. ... more >>

Hi Janice Johnson. Thanks for
replying. Yes, you certainly lived very near to where we lived for 16
years in Northcote Avenue. We lived at 153, next door were the Webbs
155, then Tilleys 157, then Chalks, 159, then Ellis, 161, then Marks
163. The Mayos were next door in a large house on the corner, with the
Farrances next door to them (went round into Carlyle Ave). Across the
road in a large house
(big family) were the Stranges - went into Spikes Bridge road, Bunces
-coming back into Northcote Ave, then the Stevens (my friend Mauvine
used to live there with Barry and Kay). Next door were the Willans
(Yvonne's relatives), then the Roses, Ives next door, White the
bookmaker, I could go on and on! We all left Northcote Avenue in 1952
and moved to North Hyde Lane. ... more >>

Hi Pauline - The names of
neighbours have jogged my memory and I remember in particular that my
mother was quite friendly with Mrs Stevens who had what might be called a
'late addition' to her family, a little girl named Anne who later
inherited my Raleigh bike. You moved out of the road just as my family
were planning to move in. My parents lived there for nearly 10 years but
the day they moved out
my mother declared 'thank God for that, I never liked that house'. Both
are dead now, of course, and none of us live in London anymore. One
brother lives in Italy, the other in Hertfordshire and I live in
Somerset but the memories linger on! ... more >>

Hi Yvonne - Our family were
allocated No.6 Faraday Road after being homeless and living in one room
in a 'rest centre' in Park View Road. The old house (Vine House) has
long been demolished but it had once been a grand place and some of the
grandeur was still apparent when we went there. It must have been very
difficult for my parents but us children aged around 4, 7 and 10 loved
it, especially my
brothers who soon made friends with all the other children living there
(11 families and 22 children) racing around the large garden playing
Cops and Robbers or Cowboys and Indians. Anyway, we also loved living in
Faraday Road at that time, the shops where our pocket money soon
disappeared each week buying comics and sweets. A piece of wasteland
became The Field and where I learned to smoke some kind of wood that
only smouldered, never flamed. That was where the huge bonfire was built
every year and as it quickly became unstable, the Fire Brigade usually
ended up putting the lot out. A little remained of Snells Farm: corn in
one field, a horse or two in another field, the little shop in the
Farmhouse where goods were served through a window at the side. My
brothers and other children from our road used to disappear over the
fields and golf course in the mornings and dawdled home in the late
afternoon usually tired out, dirty and always covered in something
horrible where they'd been delving for frog spawn in a pond or stream.
Our Sunday afternoon treat in the summertime was to walk over the golf
course and across the Greenford Road, through the fields and into
Hanwell to the Bunny Park. My parents laiden down with our tea. Can you
imagine, jars full of salads to keep things fresh, how heavy it must
have been. No Wet Wipes for sticky fingers and faces, two damp flannels
in a cellophane bag. Tiddlers and baby frogs were brought back home in
some of the empty jars, we paddled in the stream and then had to wait
for our feet to dry before we could get our shoes back on, bare feet not
allowed in case we cut ourselves on something in the grass, just
generally had a good time in the open air. Tired out and weary we
tumbled into bed and slept like little logs. It sounds oh so
old-fashioned now but it was oh so good then. ... more >>

Hi Janice. Fancy your mum being
friendly with Mrs Stevens opposite. She was such a nice lady, and was
the one neighbour who let me in to play with Mauvine when my mum was
away in a Sanitorium or hospital with TB. I think Kay was born soon
after we left. Northcote Avenue has happy and sad memories for me, but
we were so lucky to live close to the Municipal Sports Centre just
around the corner, where
we spent a large part of our childhood years, and of course the Grand
Union canal was another playground with the swimming that all the local
kids enjoyed. Hanwell park (as we called it) was another place we used
to trek to, not with our parents though. I used to take the kids in our
old pram equipped with bottles of water topped up with lemonade powder,
and whatever sandwiches were going. I usually had three with me - two
brothers and a sister. I used to love that walk through Dormers Wells,
across the Greenford road and down the steep steps on the other side. I
had to take one off the pram as it became too bumpy! Could write a book
about the wartime experiences, but then a lot of us could living in
Southall.

Colin Dutton lives Isle of Wight,
found him on FriendsReunited. Molly Newbury used to live Telford
Avenue, Golf Links Estate. Last heard she was living Didcot, had four
children, Arthur still alive and in his 80s. When my mother moved to
Marlow Road in the 1960s she was surprised to find that the lady next
door-but-one, Wyn, was Arthur's sister. Molly played a wonderful Puck in
the version of Midsummer's
Night's Dream that Arthur put on at North Road. I was one of the
fairies Peaseblossom and Joyce Mates was Cobweb, think Bettty Rosoff was
Mustardseed. Margaret Saunders was Titania, Reggie Hall was Snug, think
Michael Young was Oberon. Some years afterwards, my youngest brother
was in Arthur's production of Peter Pan, he played one of the children
named John. Arthur had a way of getting the very best from the children
and was much loved. ... more >>

Chris - whenever I read in the
papers about a schoolgirl eloping with a teacher, I think 'so what, it's
been done before' but with Molly and Arthur it lasted, a true match
obviously. It probably caused a lot of problems for them both but
they've weathered the storm and come through.

I seem to remember a Charlie
Nelhams at North Road, not in my class, famous for making the studs on
the bottom of his boots throw out sparks when he slid along the
pavement.
Mrs Hanvey was so spiteful and I was frightened of her. Gave me the
ruler on the palms of both hands, three hearty whacks, for talking in
class and I absolutely refused to let her see me cry but did later on in
the toilets! Mr Rodgers
never, as far as I know, hit girls but I can remember him getting boys
out to the front of class to bend over and he'd hit them so hard with
'Betsey' and make a laughing stock of them, seemed to enjoy it too.

remember the name of Pudney, can only remember a Chris Gillespie but
says that after all this time it's not surprising (there were 42 others
in his class!). He thinks he might still have the top hat somewhere in
some of his belongings stored still in the UK. Another child put a dent
into it thinking it was one of those collapsing type of hats once worn
to the opera, donchaknow!

Len-i have just seen your entry
on Les Nelhams-in wonderment Les was a wonderful bloke. Even as a boy he
was very mature. I lost contact with him, I thnk when I did National
Service. In recent years, when I had contact with his daughter, I was
greatly saddened to hear he was no longer with us-I would loved to have
seen him again. His dad as I recall was a painter and decorator-did some
work on our house as I recall

I happened to be trawling through
our Site way back, and came upon a North Road School thread in January
2001. There was a letter from Alan Miller in 2003 (who is in the photo
of North road Juniors), and who mentioned Molly Newbury and Arthur
Russell. A Ron Russell then replied in Jan 2004 - he was at North road
school from 1934-1937, and said that the couple were both still around
and would be pleased to
hear from anyone, and he later gave a telephone number on our site where
they could be contacted. Alan Miller replied to this and said he used
to walk with Molly (who he described as "the lovely Molly Newbury" to
her home in Telford road, which was just around the corner from where he
lived. He said when she left England he used to stop and talk to her
mother when she was in her front garden. He said that Molly and Arthur
went to live in I believe what was Rhodesia. I just thought it was
lovely to know they were still together six years ago and gave their
number if anyone wanted to contact them. ... more >>

That was a lovely piece Yvonne,
on Dr Sam Ginsborg on Southallboard 8. When I read that he only
qualified in 1935 and set up his own practice in 1936, it made me feel
so grateful that he was our Doctor in 1936 when we lived at Bankside,
and when my dear brother David was born with pyloric stenosis (a
blockage of the main intestine). My mother had to feed him milk with a
fountain pen bladder, drop by
drop. At 6 weeks old Dr Ginsborg authorised an operation at Great
Ormond Street hospital which was successful, and quite remarkable for a
baby so young. Not long after that he contracted pnuemonia. Again, Dr
Ginsborg saved his life by supplying the necessary oxygen (which my
parents couldn't afford at that time). Without Dr Ginsborg we wouldn't
have been blessed with our lovely brother. I can still see Dr Ginsborg's
face in my mind's eye and see his bright blue eyes which didn't miss a
trick. I felt so sad that he only lived three weeks to the day after his
retirement, which he had been looking forward to. He deserved much more
than that. I only wish we could have seen a photo of him. ... more >>

I was talking to my sister
Jennifer, who is eight years younger than me, about her time at Tudor
road school in the late 1940's. She was very good at athletics and told
of the day she won 7 prizes for competing in the school's Sports day at
the Municipal Sports Ground Southall. Miss Trent who was still the
Headmistress at Tudor road was so pleased with her that she laid all
Jennifer's prizes out on
a table for all the school to see. Mrs Jones, her teacher, promised to
give her sixpence if she won the High Jump. She tied 1st with a girl
from Featherstone school. My brother David gave Jennifer a lift on the
handlebars of his bike and rode to Mrs Jones house in Beechcroft Avenue
where she promptly paid up the promised sixpence.
My sister also said that one day in the hall at Assembly, Miss Trent
read out a line from her essay on Hygiene. She quoted "You must never
take off your woollies in the middle of a "wee". She forgot to add the
letter "k" (week). The whole hall of girls collapsed with laughing. Miss
Trent obviously had a very good sense of humour and was well liked by
all the school. ... more >>

Your mention of "Allo Allo"
Yvonne certainly brought back some memories for me. When I worked for an
Educational Research firm we had a pantomime after our Christmas party
made up mostly of research staff, but also some support staff as well.
We did "Allo Allo" one year, but it was nothing like the original BBC
version! It gave the research staff a chance to have a gentle dig at the
management, etc. I
played Fanny La Fan - Edith's mother - who lived up in the attic with
her hearing aid (a trumpet). Michelle was the Resistance leader who used
to say "Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once". Yvette was
the waitress who was in love with Rene and Mimi was another waitress,
also in love with him. Originally, there was a waitress called Maria who
was replaced by Mimi. (I had to look this up). How I miss all those
wonderful days and those wonderful people. ... more >>

On a more serious note, I have
just been listening to the radio LBC and a former WAAF csme on and said
she was a volunteer at Northolt Airport during WW2 - Squadrons 303 &
601. She said the 601 Squadron was Polish and they were so proud of
their country that they all perfumed themselves before they took off in
their aircraft. The 301 Squadron was made up of ordinary English people
who had learned to fly.
(Her words). She said they were all so brave, and were up and down
under the German fighters and shot them down one after the other. In the
evening they all used to go to the Orchard Hotel in Ruislip. Hearing
all this now made me feel very sad for all the young men who lost their
lives on both sides, but that's war! ... more >>

Hi again Pauline;-meant to
mention re;your mention of the Polish Sqdns. If you are interested, I
used to do some work for a lovely elderly Polish lady at Cranford, she
passed away around last Christmas. Her late brother-in-law was a Polish
pilot who was lost over Denmark. Back last year she gave me a lot of
photos etc which her late husband had found while going through his
belongings after the war,
which he had taken before he died mainly in Italy, most of which had
not been seen before. I sent copies off to a chap I am in contact with
in Canada and he has added them on his website. If you want to view them

Barry - thank you so much for the
wonderful photographs of all those brave Polish airmen in 301 Squadron.
I'm afraid I made a complete muck up of it when giving the Squadron
numbers. I should have said 301 Squadron was the Polish Squadron and 601
was the RAF Squadron. Put it down to the heat! I hope your
granddaughter is progressing well?

Yvonne, the old bridge I was
referring to in my last entry was the bridge which was right at the end
of "Bankside" houses - the opposite end of the Hambrough. We could see
it from our window at number 44. It was like a half moon shape as I
remember up and over the canal with the very narrow towpath underneath
where the shire horses walked. I do appreciate you putting all the
photos for us on the Boards.
