Do you remember Edward (Ted) Drew or his wife Dorothy (Doll/Dolly) Drew nee Green?
My Grandad worked for Crown Cork from around 1922/23 till 1972 in
London, Southall and Handworthy; He was also in the Crown Cork fire
service and in the fire service in London during the Blitz.
They lived in 45 Marlborough Road, Southall.
They had three children Edward (Ted), Alan and Rita.
Any information greatly received.

Seen references to these on one or two threads (Heston & A.T.C.
etc) Saw one of these yesterday flying at Shoreham Airport. Pilot
says it is usually based Baginton (Coventry). He said that these and
Dragon Rapides now only 42 still flying in whole of the world.

Michael, l thought somebody would
be pleased to know there are still a few left. l think 2 will be at
the Goodwood festival this weekend. I flew in G-AIYA there last year.
I think these planes were brilliant and would have used Heston a lot
many years ago.

Keith-hope you get a flight in a Dominie this year-give it my love!
As I recall, our flights were ~15mins. Because of all the factories around there then, the flight could be a bit bumpy.

Sorry Michael, didn't get to
Goodwood this year but you will be pleased to know that these Rapides
(mostly ex-Dominies) are now being restored and two companies
specialising in nostalgia pleasure flights are now doing these regularly
and these Rapide flights are always full. One company is based at
Baginton and the other is at Duxford. Though there are now only 42
still flying worldwide, there were 3 flying down here on the Sussex coast last year, and 2 giving flights, (£100 per 20 minutes, but worth it). ... more >>

I think we were a bit further
along in Northcote Avenue, Yvonne. Opposite the Willans large house on
the corner were the Marks, Ellis, Chalk, Tilley and Webb (next door to
us). We were at number 153. Then came the Parkinsons and Jones at the
end of the terraces. Incidentally, Mrs Jones (who was a widow) was
related to the young lady who talked about her grandmother Mrs Ive - who
used to sell toffee apples when we were kids.

When I look back, the prefabs
held some good memories. As my brother and I lived with my grandparents
in Greenford Ave during the week as our parents were at work; it was on a
Friday night that we would walk down Burns Ave to the Links Estate. It
was like living in the country, with our allottment at the back of the
prefab, 23, 24 and 25 Dormers Rise had the addition of the allottments,
these were adjacent to the golf links. Also remember the large water pipes that were laid these were a good place to play.
The prefabs were cold in the winter but great in the summer. We had a
grass area in front of No.23 which was cut by the council, dad always
claimed "the council look atfer our garden. ... more >>

Does anyone remember the prefabs
in Springwell Road Heston, just off Cranford Lane ? I saw these
being constructed shortly after WW2 when they offered "temporary"
accommodation for those without homes. They lasted for many years

I remember the Muriel Maitland
murder very well. I was 25, and Cranford Woods was a walk away from
where my husband's parents lived near the "Western" pub, and where we
lived for two years before we moved to Langley. It was a horrific murder
and there was a huge manhunt on for the killer. I don't think a suspect
was found, although a name was mentioned. We used to walk over Cranford
Woods many times while we lived there and afterwards, and it was frightening to think about what happened there. ... more >>

Thanks Yvonne for the photos at
the end of Southallboard5 of "Bankside". The terraced cottages there are
exactly as I remembered them in 1935/36 when I was four and five. The
little brick walls outside the houses are the same, but I think the
gates were wooden, and the old ladies had little seats they sat on to
talk as you went past them. I think they also used to whiten their front
doorsteps. The photo on
Southallboard2 however, brings back the most memories, as it is almost
outside our house. That's where my brother Bob leaned too far forward
and fell in the canal, and I flew in to tell my mum. She soon pulled him
out, and he became a very strong swimmmer. That's also where I dropped
my beloved bracelet my aunt had given me - a gold coloured one with a
square yellow stone in it which clipped together on my wrist. I
remembered crying over that! The photo on Southallboard8 is very
different to how I remember it. There were no cars outside the houses,
or fences along the road, and there were more May trees all along there.
It's a pity there aren't any photos of the old bridge that used to be
there at the end of the houses where the huge shire horses used to walk
underneath on the narrow path and the bargees used to push the barge
along with their feet on the brickwork of the bridge, as it was too
narrow for the horses. Happy days with the kingfishers, and the
bullrushes and the reeds that we made whistles with later on when we
were at Spikes Bridge. ... more >>

I also remember the Ideal Home
Exhibition when I used to go with my neighbour (after my husband got fed
up with going). Do you remember the miniature Hovis loaves they used to
give out. I'm not sure whether we paid for them or whether they were
free? I know my two kids loved the bits and pieces we used to bring home
for them in little carrier bags. I remember how tired we got walking
about, and how we had a sneaky sit down on one of the Sales people's settees! ... more >>

annual Sunday School outing in pre-WW2 years. We always went to Bognor

Yvonne, How lovely to see a part
of old Northcote Avenue again. Your relatives - the Willans - had the
large house (white fronted) to the left, and my friend, Mauvine Stevens
and her family lived next door to them. I can't remember the name of the
family far right, but I think you will remember them. I think there was
a family connection? Couldn't believe the two cars taking over the
entire front garden, but
I suppose without garages it's difficult. I had some very happy times
with Mauvine and her family while my mum was away, and every time I see a
"Snake and Ladder" board, Mrs Stevens words ring in my ears - "Up a
snake eat a grape". Also loved the photo of the "Havelock Arms" even
though it's no longer there! Always saw it on the bus when coming out of
the road opposite.
Some happy times. ... more >>

I've just had a brainstorm Yvonne. I think those neighbours at the end of the road in (the
white-fronted house) were the "Bunces". In fact, I'm sure of it. My
brother David was very friendly with one of the boys. When I speak to my
sister I'll ask her about the family, as she went to Dormers Wells, and
so did the Bunces.

Just to confirm that Norwood
Green Village Day is on Saturday, 10th July, from about 11am to 5pm.
Unfortunately I probably won't be there myself, as I have to go into
hospital a few days before. However, as promised, I will arrange for a
table to be reserved with a sign on it for members of the Southall
Knowhere Group to meet by the St Mary's Church tea tent, which will be
on the Norwood Green Road
side of the green, almost opposite the Church Hall. Apart from all the
activities on the green, there will be a horticultural show in the
church hall, and St Mary's Church will be open to visitors all
afternoon, so I hope that many of you will be able to be there, and have
a wonderful afternoon. ... more >>

CHRIS I was a bit earlier than

name I recognise is Martin - Dennis Martin was in the office and Lionel
Cobby. Our boss at that time was a Mr.Horrobin!! I used to type the
dockets ready for invoicing.
Dennis and Lionel had been there some years and were both in the forces WWII together. I have an old Corker magazine passed on

my sister, father, aunt, uncle, cousin all worked there about that time ... more >>

Chris have a look at the apex
works site that yvonne mentions. After reading click on gallery the
first 5 photo's are ones I took and sent to Simon Smith when they were
closing down. They were taken before the old Sales Office was moved up

The photo's have names on them so you might see someone you know from the 1960's.

I was interested when you said
you left Crown Cork in 1952 Jean to go to EMI. I was at EMI during that

- Re: Anybody heard of......

I don't think so Michael although
the name seems familiar. Do you know what section he worked in? EMI was
such such a large organisation, and there were lots of people in Head
Office that I didn't know personally. Hardly knew anyone in the factory
on the other side of the road.

Yes, now I remember Geoff's
surname was WALTERS. He used to suffer from time to time with Malaria
type symptoms. Such a lovely bloke. Oh, they were good days Jean.
There was also a young lady in the office called Angela who I really
respected. I named my daughter after her - my Angela is now 45. Chris x
- Re: Anybody heard of......
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 12-Jun-2010
Michael, when I first started at
EMI at seventeen, I worked in a large pool as a shorthand typist for
all the buyers of the Company. They were responsible for ordering all
sorts of components, ie, Potentiometers, Cathode Ray Tubes, Steel,
Stationery, etc, etc. Perhaps they ordered stuff for the Labs - I can't
remember now as there were so many of them. Perhaps there was a
connection with Ron Boddy there.
- Re: Anybody heard of......
by jean edward (Member 10247075) on 13-Jun-2010
Hi Pauline we do seem to have
done a lot of things at the same time and same places. I was at EMI
Factories down on Dawley Road in the Contracts Dept. And, funnily
enough I named my first daughter Claire after a girl who worked in the
next office and who I really liked.
- Re: Anybody heard of......
by jean edward (Member 10247075) on 13-Jun-2010
hi Chris, Geoff must have stayed
in the Sales Office a long time cos he was there before me. I seem to
remember he used suffer with malaria when I worked with him. He was a

was he married by the 60's?
- Re: Anybody heard of......
by Chris (Member 10220786) on 13-Jun-2010
I think Geoff was married, I
seem to remember (may be wrong) that he had a daughter, who, for some
reason he referred to as 'FUSTY' - must have been a pet name as in those
days children all seemed to have traditional names, not like nowadays.
I also remember an older typists - very short & plump. Apparently
she had worked there for years & years - she was a MISS. Can't
recall her name although Ann seems to ring a bell. Do you recall her. She seemed ancient to me but was probably in her late 50's. Chris x ... more >>

I remember the Contracts Dept
Jean, but didn't actually visit it. When I finally left the Pool, I
worked as a secretary to the Secretary of EMI, Mr S.T. Gibbons, and when
I got married I moved to the Legal Department as a secretary, a less
demanding job. Two of the Artistes who were contracted to EMI I remember

Hi Eileen, Mr Gibbons certainly
had a very responsible position as Secretary, but the real "big bosses"
were in the red-carpeted section, and we weren't in there!! That was
hallowed ground. My husband-to-be worked in the main Tool Room, my
brother-in-law was in Accounts and my sister-in-law was somewhere in the
factory - she was actually in the air-raid shelter when the doodle-bug
hit them, killing many
people and injuring lots more. Her mate, due to be married, was buried
in her wedding dress, as she was killed outright. Just the luck of the
draw! ... more >>

Chris, yes I remember the name
Sutcliffe but can't put a face to it. There was another secretary a
Mrs. Hurford - well into her fifties, she had a son called Peter.
My sister Nellie used to work in Invoicing, down the road in the main building I dont suppose you knew her?
As you say Miss Phillips was a sweet lady, very quiet, nobody EVER called her anything but MISS PHILLIPS.
- Re: Anybody heard of......

JEAN......thank you - yes it was
MRS HURFORD. I've been racking my brains to recall her name. I can see
her in my minds eye. She was PETER CLARKS secretary when I was there.

don't remember a Nellie. Do you remember Jan Jansen - she worked
upstairs in the new building.

the early days of her working there. Yes, sister worked with Miss

believe.

- Re: Anybody heard of......

Chris I bet your job would have
been a breeze with a computer, but way back in the 60's they probably
would have been very unreliable - and the size of a house too. Remember
when mobile phones became popular they were the size of a brick. And
who would have thought we would carry our phone around in a pocket or
handbag lol.
- Re: Anybody heard of......
by Michael Braden (Member 10097376) on 16-Jun-2010
Jean: what you say about the size
of early computers is so true. In 1961 I went to work at the London
Hospital Medical College in Whitechapel. Not long afterwards, the London
Hospital installed its first computer. It occupied a small building-next
to the VD clinic as I recall!

have been a breeze with modern day computers but to be honest I loved
my job there. So rewarding & a sense of real achivemnent when it
all went right at the end of the month. Even when it went wrong I used

HELLO JEAN - no sorry - I don't
recall a Pauline. Dave Davies (a Welsh man in his 40's) was in charge
of Stats, he was called Dave by everyone but Dave was not his first
name. A bit like Jan upstairs. He had the neatest handwriting I'd ever
seen & the Stats Books were a work of art. Chris x

Humphreys' of South Ave & Hillier's & Evans' Regina Road

Hello all...
I am conducting mostly family research but also in order to write a book
(eventually) but am trying to get more than just names and dates. I
think that since many of you are from the Alexandra Road side you will
most certainly remember the HUMPHREYS from South Ave. They had 14
children. My grandmother Joyve still lives there and my aunt still
lives in South Ave Gardens.
I am interested in any memories you may have of the family as a whole (good or bad).
If you hail from the other side of Southall then Florence Evans was my
Great gran and Kate Hillier who lived with her and ended up in St
Bernards was her mother. I am interested in any memories of these two
and their families. Particularly if anyone went to school with my gran
Joyce Humphreys nee Evans.

by zehra (Member 10248428) on 4-Jun-2010
Thanks Yvonne. Of course, sorry should have mentioned some dates.
The Humphreys's lived at 32 Regina Rd from 1947 - 1959 with 9 children.
1959 onwards they lived in South Avenue. The childrens birth dates
range from 1948 -1968. I believe they all attended Tudor Rd and then
Dormers Wells.
Names:
Michael, Thelma, Roy, Sheila, Alan, Brenda, Pamela, Dennis, Terry, Barbara, Peter, Linda, Eric and Tina.
Kate Hillier (sp. Charlie) and Florence lived at 32 Regina Road until Florence passed away in 1984.
Florence worked at the Margarine factory before she had Joyce in 1928,
but I believe it shut down the following year and Joyce tells me that
she worked in a toothpaste factory and Florence went on to a biscuit
factory.
I also know that Joyce had quite a lot to do with a family called the
POPES if anyone knows anything about them I would be most interested. ... more >>

I was in the same class as Thelma
at Clifton Road Junior School, and we shared a desk. Thelma was the
first girl I was sweet on. I think it was for her birthday that I took
my collection of farthings to the bank and exchanged them for two
shillings, which I then bought her a box of chocolates with. I went to
her house in Regina Road a few times, I think we played board games, and
once or twice when she
had moved to the other side of Southall. I have been away from Southall
far too long to remember the name of the road. I had no idea that Thelma
had so many siblings. ... more >>

My mother managed to get a
council house swap because of Quakers - a chap living in a council house
in Letchworth made redundant got a job at Quakers and wanted to
transfer to a house in Southall, another chap in Letchworth wanted to
transfer from a flat to a house but stay in Letchworth, and my mother
wanted to move away from Southall into a flat (still with me?) so all
three got permission to move along one. My mother stayed in Letchworth for a while, later moved to Baldock until she died in 1997. ... more >>

Much of the factory has been knocked down and only 40-ish people work in

Michael - Goldswains was the first shop that I remember ever being able
to buy sweets from after the War - black jacks or fruit salad four-a-penny.
These trips back in time don't half evoke some memories. My cousin Bob

The "Dickie" Down mentioned was
M.G. Down, M.B.E., He was the Head Master of Featherstone Senior School.
He had, I believe, the honorary rank of Wing Commander during the
Second World War and received his M.B.E. for organising military sports
or something like it. He had lived many years at Church Road, Southall,
and passed away in the seventies. His deputy as Head Master and in the
A.T.C. was R.G.L.
Jenkinson who had the honorary rank of Squadron Leader. Other A.T.C.
members that I rememberincluded Brian McDonald, Brian Randall, John (?)
Macaulay, Ronnie Warrent and John Bowers. Hope that this is of interest. ... more >>

Do you remember the song we sang
on Empire Day? I recall that we made little flags and sat in our desks
waving them. Can only remember the last line "Three cheers for the red,
white and blue". This was while I was in the infant class, possibly
1946.
- Re: May 24th

Yes, I remember Empire Day and
the song we sang "I vow to thee my country all earthly things above,
entire and whole and perfect" etc. etc. I think there is some
controversy about singing this song nowadays, but we were all little
children, and we all felt proud to sing it then.

there anyone out there who lived in Southall during this period? If so, could you contact me? My email address is lilian_pizzichini@yahoo.co.uk

Hi Phyl - Yes, I'm the same
Janice! Remember the classrooms known as the Huts? I was in Miss Adams
class in the Huts at the time that I remember celebrating Empire Day
while sitting in our desks and waving our flags as we sang. Had quite a
lot of sickness during my time at North Road so probably missed out on a
lot of things that you might remember.
- Re: May 24th
by Phyl Hutnell (Member 10234816) on 26-May-2010
Hi Janice. Yes, I remember the
huts. In winter they were heated by old "donkey" boilers, and they used
to put the frozen bottles of milk on them to thaw - ugghh! I also
remember Miss Adams, but mostly when we were in the Juniors. She used to
stand you at the front of the class and whack you across the knuckles
with a wooden ruler as punishment - very painful! Still, probably not as
bad as Mr Blanchard
caning the boys in assembly in front of the whole school as
punishment. They were very happy days though at North Road. Do you
remember "swopsies" with coloured glass beads? I had a little tin lined
with cotton wool, and a whole selection of beads. ... more >>

- Re: May 24th
by Janice Johnson (Member 10240407) on 26-May-2010
Yes Phyl - I had a tin of beads
too and enjoyed swapping and collecting - and I used to enjoy playing
five stones too. My brother can remember seeing a boy coming out of Mr
Blanchard's study hardly able to walk with blood running down his legs
after a caning. And I was given the ruler on my hands in the first class
of the infants by Miss Wright - and Miss Hanvey was another one who
used to hit out right,
left and centre, and if I told my mother she was on the teacher's side!
For some long while, I wasn't allowed to do PE nor have any dairy foods
but, once the ban was lifted, I loved drinking the milk ice cold, not
warmed. Never grew to like PE much though! ... more >>

Dennis - Any boy caught playing
on the coke heap was caned during my time at North Road (I left in
1950). Had a look at Southall 8/9 years ago and was allowed a short tour
of the school. The Infants department was changed drastically, having
been knocked through and made brighter, was surprised at the high wire
fencing and the security locks on doors/gates which says a lot about the
place these days, I suppose.

To go to the school clinic was to
put a child off the dentist for life! Rows of sinks with half-conscious
children draped over, bleeding and vomiting, after extractions. A
filling was hair-raising with slow and noisy drill and a cocaine

I started Tudor road school in
the Infants in 1936. Our headmistress was a Miss Hannett, a spinster
getting on in years. She had great delight in caning the boys in the
hall - I can still see her now with her lips firmly pursed together
while she whacked the swishing cane on the open palms of the boys' hands
several times. I had to watch while she caned my brother who was
younger than me, but he didn't
let her know it hurt and he didn't cry. We had huts outside the school,
and I remember the nurse coming round to inspect our nails and to see
if we had a clean hankie. We never did, but had to show her our clean
piece of rag instead! She also inspected our heads on "Nit day" and
anyone who had them took a letter home. I went to North road dentist
while in the Infants and sat waiting for my turn in a terrible state as I
was so frightened. I remember my mum had to come in and hold my hands
down so that the dentist could get on with his job. Nowadays I can have a
filling without any injections at all, and the dentist is lovely. ... more >>

Yes, I too loved cod liver oil
and malt. My mum had a huge jar up on the high shelf in the scullery.
Too high up for us to get to! I'm not sure whether it was for my brother
who had rickets and had to have two operations on his legs - (once
because they hadn't been set properly) or whether it was for my mum who
had TB when we were all young. At any rate, we got some occasionally.

The school dentist at North Rd
was a Scots woman, and I remember some of the sinks were red - so you
couldn't see the blood! The toilet block was something else - used to
freeze up in winter and then we were often sent home. The boys and girls
were in separate playgrounds when we got to the Juniors. There were the
coke heaps and the bike sheds at the bottom of the playgrounds. Mrs
Hanvey took, was it 1A?,
first year Juniors. Then had Miss Roberts and Mr Rogers (can't remember
which way round) and Miss Gregson in the top year. I was a "stair
prefect" - get me! Had to stand half way up the stairs when the classes
were going in and make sure no one was running or talking. I used to
practice on the stairs at home! Ah, happy days. Also was a tea monitor -
went to the staff room to make the teachers' tea at break times. I
think that was in year 4. But talking of dentists, there was a Mr
Theodore Berry in South Road - went to him for years. We've really
started the old memories going here haven't we! ... more >>

dentist was in 1954 for a very slow and very painful drilling and
filling of two teeth. After

The photo on Southallboard7 of
Beresford Road certainly brought back some memories for me of long ago.
Although the road itself has changed, I remember quite clearly when I
was five years old and started Tudor Road school in 1936, I used to go
to school with older children from Bankside, and we always went through
Beresford road. I couldn't work out why we went that way, but it was
probably because the
incline up to the Hambrough pub was steep. My mother had just had a new
baby plus my brother of three and a half and I can also remember going
to school on my own sometimes. At the Coronation in May 1937 we were
given a mug with King GeorgeV1 & Queen Elizabeth on it, and a silver
spoon with a crest on the end. We always stopped to buy sweets on the
way before we crossed the road by Price's Bakery. Thanks for the memory. ... more >>

yvonne, I have sent the photo of
the Class 1937 North Road infants to Len Goddard, hoping he might be
able to get it on, if not anyone who wants a copy I can easily email you
one if you let me know your address.
I manage to get on to Southallboard 1 just by typing - in Google -
Southallboards then clicking on one of three options that come up.
Usually photostream/flickr.
