Hi Denis - my brother-in-law
George Birch (commonly known as "Birchie" worked at Wimpeys for years,
and probably worked with your dad. They were a nice crowd of blokes, and
we were always told of the things that went on there. I remember
Birchie telling us all one day that he found the kitchen plug underneath
his greens in the canteen. When he took it back they said, "Oh thank
God for that, we've been looking for it all the morning"! Knowing him, he would have had a good laugh about it. ... more >>

it was off Lady Margaret Road. I remember sitting in the front room of
the house and it was cold he sometimes had a fire on not often though.

Don: Our Anderson Shelter rapidly filled with water! When the Morrison
Indoor Shelter came out, my parents ordered one, but it didn't come
until after the Blitz had eased off. Because we had lodgers when we
ordered it, we got a two tier one. However it did get used nightly when
the V1's started.

I too remember sleeping under the
table, Mum wouldn't have a shelter, we had a bad air-raid one night Mum
wrapped me up in an eiderdown and she wanted to go to the loo so I
waited on the landing, the bathroom door was open and there was this
almighty explosion and I ended up on top of the washing in the bath, and
Mum was still on the toilet...... of course we all had a laugh...

Hi Don Hemmings. Thanks for the
news about the Badger sisters. Marion was in my class at Tudor road
school - a very pretty girl with curly fair hair. I think she played the
part of a Princess in one of our plays. Eunice was working at Heston
Farm in August 1945 when I was, stringing up the tomato plants and
picking up the windfall apples in the orchard during the school
holidays.

Can anybody remember the fire
alarms situated along the road one in particular I remember the top of
Saxon Rd.you broke the glass and waited for the Fire Engine there were
many false alarms they were painted red.
- Re: annivers war 70 yrs blitz etc
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 21-Apr-2010
Having them atop the police
stations would make sense, as the police would get the phone call from
somewhere and set them off. Greenford police station, near the corner
of Oldfield Lane, is the only one l clearly remember. They were
mounted on a very tall post that went higher than the building
- Re: annivers war 70 yrs blitz etc
by Chris (Member 10220786) on 21-Apr-2010
Len - the Fire Alarms you
mentioned. I seem to recall a glass fronted top/box; which had to be
broken to activate the alarm. These were on red posts appx 5 ft tall.
Is that what you were thinking of? Or have I dreamed them up???? I
THINK there was one near to the beginning of Kingsley Avenue; just off
North Road.
- Re: annivers war 70 yrs blitz etc
by Len Goddard (Member 10234853) on 21-Apr-2010
Chris you were right they were
about five feet high you broke the glass and waited when you think we
only had one fire engine the chief fireman was a Mr Smith he lived in
Norwood Green.the good old days in Southall
- Re: annivers war 70 yrs blitz etc
by barry raymond (Member 10239180) on 21-Apr-2010
Hi one and all;-
on the question of air raid sirens they were on the roof of most police
stations. I recall there being one on top of a pole in Hayes Town
outside the Copper Kettle cafe, opposite Pump Lane, next to the police
box (Dr. Who) there was another on a pole at the top of Church Road
opposite the Adam & Eve, they were still there up until the 60's.
- Re: annivers war 70 yrs blitz etc
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 24-Apr-2010
My dad did his stint as a fire
guard during the blitz when he wasn't on night work. He was supplied
with a hat (like the air-raid wardens wore) with FG on it. We used to
call it his "Funny guy" hat when we were kids. We also had a wooden post
with a sqare on top in our front garden, and he told us if it turned
green (I think it was) it meant there was gas about. Fortunately, it
never did!
- Re: annivers war 70 yrs blitz etc
by Len Goddard (Member 10234853) on 24-Apr-2010
I remember those boards Pauline it was if the Germans used phosphorus gas it would change colour.
- Re: annivers war 70 yrs blitz etc
by Michael Braden (Member 10097376) on 24-Apr-2010
Pauline and Len-your memories recall the fact that we had to take our
gas maxks with to school every day. If you forgot it, you were sent home
to get it. Mums made nice carriers to hold the gas mask box.

by jean edward (Member 10247075) on 24-Apr-2010
I lived in Clifton Road during
the war, and was very interested to find this page. I remember the
bombing in Regina Rd, first the ordinary bombs" then the Buzz Bombs
later. Nearly in the same place as I can remember. Like most kids of
my time, I hated anderson shelters and we slept indoors and hoped for
the best. I can still remember the smell of those shelters - yuk!!
My place of residence is

Michael - You talking about gas
masks reminded me of something I'd forgotten years ago. I was staying at
my grandma's house in N.Kensington when the siren went. We went down to
the cellar, which was in a forboding place - loads of concrete steps
which eventually led to the garden. The cellar was several steps down.
We hadn't been in there for more than five minutes when I opened up my
gas mask (we used to
take them everywhere) and offered my grandma a piece of chocolate which
was kept in there for emergency rations! I don't think it had been in
there for long. I remember her laughing about it. She was quite old
then. ... more >>

Hi Jean - Nice to hear from you
in Adelaide. I wondered whereabouts you lived in Hayes before you left
for Australia. My husband lived there, and I joined him when we got
married, plus we had lots of relatives living there at the time you
left. There are also a number of members on this site who also lived in
Hayes, and some still do.

Hi Pauline,
We had lived in Langley for 10 years but stayed with my husbands parents
in Granville Road, just before leaving. I also lived in Little Road
and Stirling Road before we got married, and while our house was being
built - in Keats Way Greenford.
I was born in Balfour Road, then when quite small moved to Carlisle
Avenue then Allenby Road. It was when my mother died I moved to Clifton Road with my grandmother.
My dad was Alan Stirling who was quite well known in Southall. I also
had a sister named Ellen(Nellie) who came to Adelaide soon after us.
I am still in touch with Mary Dawson who lived in Endsleigh Road, and we write occassionally.
When single I worked at Scott & bowne, Crown Cork and Quaker Oats. ... more >>

Hi Len
Yes I remember the Essoldo well, used to go midweek with my sister who
lived in Little Road. I seem to remember there was a good butcher just a
way down East Avenue.
One of my favourite haunts was the Dominion, we used to go dancing there
on Friday nights, and the Montague at Ealing Broadway was goo in the
50's.

Hi Yvonne
Nice to have your reply, Australia in the 50's was pretty basic i
understand. Adelaide is much smaller than Sydney and we were glad we
settled here.
I will look out for some old photo's and send them on. Bye the way how
do I get to look at the ones already received - sounds like they would
be really interesting.

Hi Jean - Thanks for your all
your news. I lived with my family in Northcote Avenue from about 1937 -
1952, so very near to Carlyle Avenue (and the Municipal Sports Ground).
We then moved to North Hyde Lane, then Hayes for two years, and were in
Langley when you were there. We lived in Raymond Road (just off the
village)for sixteen years, and must have still been there when you moved
to Australia. We left Langley in 1972. It's a small world! ... more >>

Jean - I forgot to ask you where
you lived in Langley. We moved in there in 1956, and by my reckoning you
must have moved there about the same time? Did you ever join Langley
Women's Institute? Lots of changes since you left. A large new College
opened in Station Road, just before the Railway Station, and that long
brick wall by the War Memorial in Langley Road round to Station road,
where the Road Research Laboratories were have all gone. ... more >>

Hi Pauline. yes we certainly
lived in Langley at the same time. We were in Cherry Ave just off
Langley Rd, backing onto the railway line and Middle Green Rd bridge.
No didnt belong to womens institute I worked at Airwork on the aerodrome
and then Starch Products just behind us, till I had my kids. I worked
with a girl who lived in Raymond Rd her name was Ruth Rose.

Hi Jean - great to hear from you
again. Yes, I think I know whereabouts Cherry Avenue was. I've got St
Mary's church and the Red Lion on the opposite side in my mind's eye.
Cherry Avenue was further along Langley Road wasn't it? You've started
off the memories of Langley all those years ago. When my husband and I
got off the old steam train from Hayes and walked across the wooden
bridge at Langley, we
paused on the bridge and looked across to the village. It was lovely.
Pasolds on the left with the huge Ladybird trademark on the front, large
houses with hollyhocks in the front garden, with a little pond with
ducks on, and a thatched cottage on the other side. The village itself,
with a small church which laid back from the shops, then the Red Lion (I
think) with the Crown on the opposite side where they had sawdust on
the floor in one bar, with quaint little cottages alongside where the
old couples used to sit at their gates and chat to you on the other side
of the road. Rhymes the bakers where the lovely fresh bread was baked
and their famous Lardie cakes, and all the latest gossip of the village
went on. They were wonderful days. I could go on. I'm afraid I didn't
know Ruth Rose though, although I knew most of the people in Raymond
road.

Finally found Cherry Avenue and
Middle Green Avenue on Google Street maps Jean. It was a good Street
Tour, and I'm sure I'd never been to Cherry Avenue before. Brought back
some nice memories - Langley road. I did that walk many times with one
younger daughter in the pram, and the other one sitting on the outside.
We walked to Slough and back! Did you ever catch the
10 o'clock Special at Langley
Station Jean on a Friday when all the mums with their babies in prams
squeezed into the Guard's Van? Most of us ended up in the Waitrose
Supermarket in Slough. There was a place where we all left our prams,
and then took the children into the store to get the shopping. My pram
had three sections in the bottom, and all the goods went underneath.
Those were the days. Plenty of energy then! Had to wait a long time
before we got a car. ... more >>

Hi Pauline, I also used to shop
at Waitrose in Slough and like you left the pram at the front before the
checkouts. We (my friend Eileen and I) used to walk up up Langley Rd
passing St Bernards convent.(by the way she still lives there in Cherry
Ave)Used to go every Friday morning so I bet we were in there at the
same time lol. Sometimes we used Tescos - not so far to walk. Think it
was next to LLoyds bank on the corner. ... more >>

After I found Cherry Avenue,
Jean, I followed the Google road map up the Langley road to the corner
of St Bernard's Convent. Still looks good, but then returned back down
to Langley village. What a change has taken place. I remember Ann
Miller's Dress shop in the high street, with the sweet shop next door.
Do you remember Ann, and assistants Doris and Janet. Then after the
Off-Licence and the Methodist church next door further along used to be the
Co-op with a butchers at the side. A hairdressers on the corner of
Elmhurst road and Carrods the Greengrocers the other side. My two
daughters both went to the Marish school. What memories. While we lived
there, a neighbour and myself got up a coach trip to Brighton and
another one to Southend of all the ladies in the road, while our
husbands, bless them, looked after all the kids. They were wonderful
outings, and one of our neighbours videod all the men, some with
toddlers in arms waving us all off. That was in the early sixties. Very
happy days. ... more >>

Good morning Yvonne. Have contacted flickr to see if they can be of assistance regarding board6.
Ruffy "George" and Flo Rowbottom live from the 1920's to the early
1950's at 77 Greeford Ave, Flo's brother Jack Milsom lived in West Ave,
& Ruffy's brother Daniel. Doll my mum and all the family moved to
127 Northcote Ave in the early 1950's, Thats when Ruffy used the
Northcote Arms,previously when he
worked at the gas works he used the White Heart & the Glasshouse by
the station. were he got a medal for drinking a total of 54 pints in

Yvonne, your mention of East
Avenue, and Cordell talking about their next door neighbours called
"Boyland". Mr & Mrs Boylan (who were a Catholic family) were great
friends of my mum and dad. They used to go out on a Saturday night often
to have a drink with them. They had four girls (I think) Margaret,
Eileen and Agnes. Can't remember the other one. Also had a son. I'm
pretty sure that Mrs Boylan is in the front of that photo in Greenford Avenue, although they lived in East Avenue. If it's not her, it's her double. ... more >>

The Boylans I am talking about
didn't live in West Avenue, Yvonne. Mr Boylan's name was Ben, and he
worked at AEC, as my dad did. Margaret Boylan also worked at EMI, and
was still there (unmarried) in 1954. Ben Boylan was still alive when my
dad died in 1971, as he came to the funeral.

table stretching to Carlyle Avenue. You were only a nipper then, weren't
you. Mrs Boylan (if it is her) is the lady turning halfway towards the
camera in the front row, near the pavement. She is wearing a coat with

Since this item cropped up on our
Photoboard, I must relate it before I forget it. I was in my Bank this
morning, sitting at the table, sorting myself out before I left, when a
very spritely old lady came in and sat opposite me. It started off when
she remarked that there were no pens on the table as usual, tied on. One
thing led to another and we were talking away as if we had known each
other for years, and why
not SHE WAS BORN IN SOUTHALL IN QUEENS ROAD. I told her I was born in
Queen Charlotte's hospital and she said so was she! She said she was 86
and had four brothers, and she was the last one - (born later when her
mother was 47). I started telling her about our Site, and how lots of
the places had been closed down, etc. I then said the old Palace has
been boarded up, and she then said ...wait for it ... my young brother
put the dragons on top of that Palace. She said her mother had been
walking past the Palace with a neighbour, and when they looked up, the
neighbour said, Oooh that's your Ernie up there, and her mother ran all
the way home! Her brother was called ERNIE TAYLOR. I couldn't believe
it. We talked about the Gasworks, and the Straight, and she knew
everything about Southall. Her father worked in the butchers opposite
the Dominion. I can't remember the name. Bearing in mind this lady was
86, and she said her brother put the dragons up before she was born! She
offered to give me her telephone number as she said she could tell me
anything I wanted to know about Southall, but I couldn't do that. I did
however, get her to write Southall Knowhere down so that she could
perhaps have a look at our Site, or get her family to look at it. I told
her I would write up what she told me. What a lovely morning and what a
lovely lady!

It seems Southall is determined
to be in the news. I've just been watching Sky News and Gurinder Chadha
(Director of "Bend it with Beckham"). She was in Southall, tasting some
delicacy on a stall in the High Street, talking about her latest film -
also filmed in Southall - "It's a Wonderful Afterlife". It's being
released in the UK on 23 April. She was saying that she grew up in
Southall, and she felt
happy that the film was also in Southall. Evidently, it's about a mother
who is trying to get a husband for her daughter, with disastrous
consequences. ... more >>

- Re: southall photoboards

Every time I look at the photos
on Southallboard (page 1) there are two in particular that always take
me back to the bus ride to Greenford at my first job at 14. The first
one is North Road Parade and the second one is Allenby Road on a corner
(which I now know was the Lord Allenby pub (which we are told is boarded
up). So, I decided to do the tour, as best I could from Carlyle Avenue
to Greenford, where I
worked. So, up Carlyle Avenue (leaving Northcote Avenue behind) up Burns
Road to North Road, past where the "Scarlet Fever" hospital was (which
is signposted now as a Nursing Home) to North Road Parade. I only
recognised it from our photoboard. Then down Allenby Road to the corner
of Somerset Road (where I used to wait for a second bus sometimes).
Across the road to Mornington road (a very long road) turning right at
the end to the Ruislip Road. I followed this road along to Greenford
road, finally coming to Cowgate road where the "Cow & Gate" Milk
Depot, Greenford used to be. It was such an emotional feeling to see the
Garage, which was next to my firm, still there, but now much larger
taking up the space where we used to work, and the Western Avenue ahead
(which used to be a roundabout). I couldn't believe it when I noticed,
after going back and forwards with the arrows, that one of the buildings
bordering on to Cowgate road still had the whirly staircase at the side
up to where the new Manager of the Yard had his office. This was 64
years ago! It brought it all back. He had just come back from the Army
in quite a high position, and when I was summoned up there to see him,
he told me that I was not to go into the Yard any more (where all the
life was - the horses & the stables, the milkmen, the Servery and
dear old Mr Collis with his leather apron on which always smelt of sour
milk, who used to mother me. Little did he know that I had already
decided to leave, and after his little lecture it reinforced it. So
thank you for the Photoboard, Yvonne, and whoever put the photos on.
That trip made my day after 64 years. ... more >>

Thanks Yvonne for putting the
flats of Allenby road on, but my dad's was in the 400's a bit further
up. As for Southallboard6, I got my grandson to put it on the next day!.
He does it so quickly, but won't show me how he does it. They are so
fast. I found out on my own though that you can get straight into
Southallboard6 once you have got in, by typing in address www.flickr.com

Don't put new shoes or any shoes
on the table. This came from the mining community when the only time
that boots or shoes were put on the table was when the family of a miner
had been informed of his death. His boots would be put on the table to
show that he was dead. After that the placing of boots or shoes on the
table was thought to be in bad taste

I certainly remember the dried
egg during the war, but don't remember it in a tin. It wasn't bad for
making an omelette of sorts. As we only had one chicken, it was very
useful in our kitchen. I expect lots of our members remembered it as
well. Just to put the record straight - I met "Uncle Mac" at EMI in our
Legal Department, and not the Record shop. I didn't realise until I read
it on Southallboard5 that he played "Larry the Lamb" in Toytown. I used to race home from school to listen to that programme. It was lovely. ... more >>
