I enjoyed the latest photos - so
many of them of interest. It was good to see the youngsters still
playing cricket at Spikes Bridge Municipal Sports Gound, as we did as
children all those years ago. Spikes Bridge obviously looked different
after its refurbishment. You remember, Yvonne, it used to have wooden
planks to walk on which moved as you walked. We used to walk across the
outside of the bridge
over the canal, for a dare, hanging on for dear life. None of us ever
fell in! As you said, the footpath was on the left side in the photo.
The difference was in our days there used to be reeds and bullrushes all
along the edge of the canal. I remember seeing it in 2000 with my
brother and thought how bare it all looked. Never mind, we still have
our memories, and the photos help bring them back. ... more >>

Pre-WW2(and during), I used to go fishing with my dad near those
prison ruins on the canal-there was a small, short branch off the canal
then. I remember then being told that the prison housed German POW's
during WW1. Yvonne's entry brought it all back!

So many lovely photos, but the
ones which brought back most memories for me on Southallboard3 were the
Manor House gardens with the lovely rectangular pond with the Lily Pads
and the fish (and the coins which had been thrown in) not forgetting
the ancient Mulberry Tree. The park keeper used to keep a good eye on
the place. Also, the Ironbridge and Southall Park. I think most of the
giant trees in the park
have gone, but I can still remember climbing to the top of the tallest
one there with my brother and his friends. Easy going up, but not so
easy getting down! ... more >>

Michael the short branch of the
canal was crossed by a stone bridge we called the white bridge. In the
early 40s I used to catch newts using a piece of cotton with a worm tied
on in the branch. Later I fished about 200yds further on with some
success. We also had 2 allotments, one at Spikes Bridge and the other
about 500yds passed the white bridge. Always a great time along the
canal.

the bridge over the spur.Dad and I had limited fishing success-a few
small roach and gudgeon as I recall. Our favourite fishing spot in
Southall was the branch going to Quaker Oats, fishing on the opposite

Wonderful photos on
Southallboard4. We all have our favourites, but to see the old Tudor
road school again, and the houses hardly changed. It reminded me of one
of the girls in my class who lived there, Marion Badger and her sister
Pauline. Bankside cottages looked as they did in the 30's. I can't
believe they are fetching those prices now. Obviously "The Hsmbrough"
has changed, and I did prefer the
old one best. The Iron Bridge and Southall garage were great, although
us old'uns remembered it as Hanwell garage. Not forgetting the Odeon and
those unforgettable Saturday morning pictures, with "We come along on
Saturday morning greeting everbody with a smile". Happy, happy,
memories. ... more >>

Good to see where Grubham's shop
is with the new owners, plus a glimpse of the private houses at that end
of the road. Can't quite make out where we were, as if Norman Avenue
was just across the road to the right we looked across to that from our
house. I don't know which school photo you mean Yvonne, as I left Tudor
road in 1943 and went to SGS for two years until 1945, when I left to
earn my keep. Didn't have any photos taken with the headmistress at either schools.

Fantastic photos on
Southallboard5 of Northcote Avenue, Yvonne, especially Spikes Bridge
looking up the road. I can see all the old neighbours houses - The
Farrances and the Mayos on the far left corner, the Marks next to the
Mayos. The Stranges with the larger house with the brick wall that goes
round that corner on the opposite side. Can see my friend Mauvine
Stevens house and the Willans next door.
Ours was on the left-hand side further up on the left. The Spikes
Bridge alleyway to the bridge and the park brought back memories,
although it looked very run-down to when we lived there. I only went
down there with a crowd as I always thought it was a bit "spooky". I
went that way with my husband-to-be on a Friday night as it was a quick
cut across the bridge to Delamere road, etc. We had chips with my future
sister and brother-in-law every Friday. Some lovely memories! ... more >>

Southall Tech's sports ground was in Hayes. After an afternoons sport,
my pal Ron Carey and I cycled through some back streets which took us to
Spikesbridge thence home to North Road.

What a lovely surprise to open up
Southallboard5 this evening and see the interior of St Leonard's Church
and the Church itself. I was married there 56 years ago on 6 March, so
it was a really nostalgic memory for me. Thank you. Mind you, we had
snow on the ground and it was a bitterly cold day all those years ago! I
can remember shivering waiting for Frank Barry to take the photos.

From our large estate at
Northcote Avenue, Carlyle Avenue, etc. we used to walk to Tudor road
through to Norman Avenue into Dane road. Then a short way up Dane road
on the right there was an established alleyway (which was still there in
2000) past Lancaster road on the left,(Wimpeys on the right) past the
few houses into the back entrance of Tudor road school. The boys'
playground was on the left
- girls' on the right. There were flowers growing away from the houses,
and we we got told off for picking them to give to the teachers as
they belonged to the residents. ... more >>

From time to time I read a bit
more from my brother David's auto-biography. As this was when he was at
Tudor road school, I thought it was a nice memory to recount here.
"Always being physically active, over the Park and canal in particular, I
soon became proficient enough to get into the school football team, as
goalkeeper. We did quite well as a team, but I remember one particular
game against Lady
Margaret's school, when we lost 10-0! I was very tearful at the end, and
remember Mr Whale consoling me, saying I had played the best game on
the field! A boy called Gerry Cakebread was in goal for Lady Margaret's,
whom I was later to meet at Southall Grammar School. He played in goal
for Brentford some years later, for a short period. Small wonder we
never scored! ... more >>

Apologies if this has already been posted but for anyone wanting to make a virtual street tour, click
http://www.vpike.com/
You may have to select U.K. and London and then navigate out along the
Uxbridge Road using the little man. Takes a bit of getting used to but
good fun to see how much has changed, good luck, A.T.

Finally got into the street tour,
Yvonne. More hit than miss to start with, but I got to see Tudor road,
along the Uxbridge road to the "Hambrough" down the side by Bankside,
and right outside our house. Couldn't seee exactly which one it was, but
saw whereabouts. My God it's changed along the Broadway, but nearly 60
years ago is a long time! Even saw Northcote Avenue and the poor old
"Northcote Arms" all
boarded up. Only ever went in the Off-licence to get my Mum's Guinness!
Went down Dane road as far as I could, but didn't get to the alleyway to
Tudor road school. Will have another go later as it makes my eyes go
funny! There used to be a small bridge over the canal just past the end
of Bankside where we lived. I wondered if it's still there or whether
it's been taken down. Reminds me as a small child when some fisherman's
"hook" got caught in my eye-lid. It took ages to get it out by my father
and I can remember having to keep very still for a long time! ... more >>

Yes Pauline & Yvonne the trip
down the different streets that we walked as kids is great. I followed
the alleyway from the back of the school to Alexander Ave. I lived at 74
Saxon Rd which was on the alley. You have to jump from street to street
and pick up the start and end of the alley. To see the changes to the
fronts of the houses with the bigger windows is wonderful.
- Re: Vitual street tour

Hi Ron, the alleyway I am talking
about only started in Dane road - it was an established alleyway and
separated the private houses from the council houses. Your Saxon road
came before Dane road, and you would have had to go out of Saxon road,
down the top of Dane road on the left-hand side before you got to "our"
alleyway.
It was still there in 2000 - exactly the same as it always was. I can't remember ever cutting through from Saxon road to Dane road. Was there a cut through? ... more >>

The only alleyways on our estate,
which included Dane road, Spikes bridge road, Norman avenue &
Northcote avenue were private alleys running from the back of our houses
out to the road, which were for access to the dustman and coalman.
There were no public alleyways other than that one in Dane road which
all the children from the above roads used. We all used this public
alleyway every day over several
years. Plus, the public alleyway in Spikes Bridge road to the canal. I
checked with my sister (in case I was deluded) and she said exactly the
same. ... more >>

When I lived in Alexandria Ave.
and went to Tudor Rd.I could get to Dane Rd through alley ways between
Northcote and Saxon there was a large alley there was a bonded warehouse
situated it was a large driveway why I remember the place was a fish
shop called Houghton's and out the back were bins of crackling we use to
help ourselves the top of Saxon was waste land where we use to play.
- Re: Vitual street tour
by Ron Cox (Member 10234401) on 16-Mar-2010
Pauline as you said many of the
alleys were closed off. The Dane Rd alley is as you said between the
private and council houses. If you traverse up Dane Rd on the opposite
side of the road to 60 Dane Rd you will see alley to Saxon Rd.

Len that wide driveway was behind
the shops in the Broadway which serviced the shops between Saxon &
Northcote. I remember the Fish & Chip shop. The waste land had the
air raid shelters during the war & advertising hoardings along the
main road. Many hours of fun in that area.

I'm just trying to give you a
picture of our alleys in Northcote Avenue, and elsewhere on the estate.
We lived in terraced houses - in groups of four. There was one large
alley from the road serving our next door neighbour, and to the right
the alley led to our back garden, but no further. The same the other
side - serving one neighbour at the side, and to the left - another
three neighbours. Then
it was blocked, so no-one could walk from alley to alley. However, in
the private houses further up the road, there was one long, dark, smelly
alley which ran all the length of the houses. We went down there
occasionally, but only to have a look at the back gardens of the houses.
It was a bit creepy I remember. ... more >>

Going back to the alleyway

which was burnt to the ground. It was a massive fire.

the wood yard was it is now a Medical centre I go there to have blood

Oh Len, you've brought back
memories of the bandstand and the band in Southall Park. I remember them
with all their uniforms on. Also remember going out late on a Saturday
night to buy the meat when it was cheap from Chapman's the butchers near
to the top of Northcote Avenue.
What wonderful days!

Thanks Ron, I finally found your
house at No.74 Saxon road on the alleyway through to Dane road. It's
quite a big alley. I don't think I ever used it. Then I found the
alleyway at 60 Dane road. This didn't look as big as the one in Saxon
road, but it was still there with the Sign for bikes. Seeing that alley
in Dane road did seem to trigger off a memory, but not the Saxon road
one. The truth is, we never used them, but thry're still there! ... more >>

Len I think you are right about
the fire being 1938 as we came to Saxon Rd in 1939 and it was a vacant
block. Later above ground air raid shelters were built there and from
memory were built of white brick.Southall park was a mecca for
activities,Billy Smarts fair & circus, bands in the band stand later
in the rose garden. It supplied most of the area with great conkers.
Mini golf along the fence
adjacent to the Uxbridge road. Sunday after lunch was a meeting place

Yes, Len, I rember Dare Devil

one leg (hence Peggy or Peg-leg). He would dive into a tank with
flames coming out, but the splash would douse the flames.

Talking about Fairs, etc.
reminded me of the time in 1952/53 when my husband-to-be was walking
home to Hayes after leaving our house very late one night at North Hyde
Lane. He had walked to the top of Wentworth road, turning left along a
very long road with hedges alongside. (I can't remember the name, but
someone will know where it was). It was pitch black, when he saw two
very bright lights, high
up, moving along way ahead of him. He hadn't been drinking, but he
couldn't work out what it was. He kept on walking towards the lights,
and lo and behold, as he got very near, there appeared a very large
shape which was an elephant! He said he just couldn't believe it at that
time of night, but perhaps that was the best time for elephants to be
walking about. Maybe it was making it's way to Southall Park???
I remember it was a good talking point at the time. ... more >>

I've just had the most fantastic
tour from the "North Star" pub (the new one) down North Hyde Lane -
about 200 yds to the square where we lived, carried on to Wentworth
road, going past there to the little bridge over the canal in Regina
road. Had a quick look at the "Old Oak" pub, then back to Regina road,
carrying on until I came to South road eventually. Saw "The Havelock
Arms" (although I think
it's gone now), past the Manor House Gardens. I thought Southall Norwood
hospital looked a bit tatty with a picket fence around the outside. The
traffic coming over the Station bridge was something else - three lanes
of cars, but it was great to see the main Post Office just as I
remembered it, and King's Hall Methodist Church. Down to the old
"Palace" and turning left at Lady Margaret traffic lights to the
Broadway, totally unrecognisable. Up to Northcote Avenue down past the
"Northcote" pub all boarded up, round the corner where "Grubhams" used
to be, and it wouldn't let me go any further. What a journey - it's
changed a lot, but nice to see some of the old landmarks. ... more >>

Sadly Keith bus bodies are not
the industry to suffer. AEC's downfall was the Leyland takeover and as
we know there is not a nationalised industry that has been a success
(except monopolies, Power, Water, Telephones and Royal mail) had the
right investment been made AEC could still be synonimous with quality
PSV vehicles and probably still in Southall. Nationalisation dragged our
car industry down and
not satisfied with that the also destroyed the commercial makers as
well, with a great deal of help from the unions. This is not a old times
scenario, half the steel for Wembley Stadium and the Olympic Stadium
was imported! at a time when our steel plants are being mothballed. I'm
in the rail industry the trains and infrastructure are mainly supported
by overseas products. The modern day problem is the cost of red tape,
green and general taxes even call centres are too expensive to run over
here....we'll all end up working in Costa Coffee or Tesco soon! ... more >>

Vince - if you are in the rail
industry, l need to talk with you. l live in Arundel and we are trying
to get a 300m chord built so that trains can run direct from here to
Worthing, Hove Brighton etc. Network Rail initially said they were not
against it, but as soon as Southern Rail told them it would bust their
monopoly (First Thameslink would use it) they have conspired to get it
stopped. How can l chat with you about this? ... more >>

Loved the "Ironmonger's Tale"
(J.H.Coath in West Ealing) on Google Greenford gwr rfitzgibbon. It was
exactly like the Hardware Stores that used to be. I don't remember that
particular one, but I do remember a very trendy Hardware shop right
opposite Ealing Town Hall and the Church in the early fifties. We were
engaged, and my husband and I bought several items for our kitchen from
there. We bought a set
of "Swan" saucepans and a Colander plus a broom, etc. I still have the
colander, good as new, which is now 58 years old. Not bad eh? ... more >>

Yvonne, whereabouts in West
Avenue did your relative Ada Ackers live. Our back gardens in Northcote
Avenue backed on to West Avenue, but I'm not sure where Ada lived. I am
asking because I'm sure I recognised her photo. Did she work in
Southall? This is on Southallboard4.

Although I didn't know any of the
Willans boys personally, the family lived next door to my friend,
Mauvine Stevens, and I was always in and out of her house. There was
always a lot of coming and going in the Willans house, as they were a
large family. As young girls, I can remember her saying at times when we
saw one of the men, she would say "Oh, he's a bit of all right". We
were very young then!

Yes, it was Mauvine, Yvonne. Her
grandfather was Irish, and she was a beautiful young woman with blue
eyes and very dark hair. Unfortunately, I lost contact with her after
she got married, and the last I heard from her she lived in Saxon road.
When I just looked back on the Site to one of Steve Hill's threads in
August last year, he mentions that there was a "Stevens" family, with
daughter Anne, still
living next door to your family when he last visited Southall. That
could either be Barry Stevens or his sister Kay. People move all the
time, so they could have gone now. ... more >>

Metric measurements: as a
scientist(part retired!). At work I use exclusively metric (SI)units.
When I come home I buy eg 2lbs spuds,4 pints milk, put 5 gallons of
petrol in the car, weigh myself in stones/lbs, and so on.

Just been contacted by old school (Hanwell) possible re-union. I am
now 61, (School intake year Sept '59). The point is they have now
managed to contact 45 out of 90 pupils - (3 forms of 30 each) Of the
45 traced, 2 are dead, (1 at age 49(m) & 1 at age 59(f)). Of the
43 surviving, 2 still live in Hanwell (one in house inherited from
parents), 1 in Ealing, 1 in Hayes, and 1 in Ashford.
NOBODY else is within M25 except 1 in docklands and 1 in Purley.
Half the others have moved to W Sussex, Hampshire (especially along M3)
and Berkshire. More live within 15 mile radius of Basingstoke than
within 15 mile radius of Hanwell. I found it interesting. ... more >>

I recently used Google Earth/Maps to travel from Oswald Road to Dormers

what a long way it seems; we thought nothing of it then. Nowadays
children get a lift to school even though they live just around the

The shoe shop thread
Saxone,Lilley and Skinner,Freeman Hardy and Wllis Dolcis all belonged to
The British Shoe Company based in Leicster the man who owned it was Sir
Charles Clore there were two shoe shops in King St. C.J. Dadds and Bata

- Re: elect roll
by Michael Braden (Member 10097376) on 8-Feb-2010
Len-that's correct. Oddly
enough, in Dennis Uptons " Ealing at War", he mentions fatal casualities
in Cambridge Road the same night(November 1940), but only mentions
South Road without details. Odd, because on the back cover, there is a
small photo of the shattered Barrets, unidentified!

Len, I well remember when the
bomb hit Abernethies in West Ealing. My Mum had to take me for an
appointment at King Edward's Hospital in Ealing, and after the
appointment we usually walked back to the Uxbridge Road and caught the
trolley bus opposite Abernethies to Southall. On that particulat day Mum
got talking to a lady whilst waiting for our appointment who told us
there was a tea room in the hospital
where you could get a nice cuppa and suggested we went there afterwards
with her. I think our guardian angel was watching over us that day
because we went for the cuppa and the bomb fell just when we would have
been waiting for the bus. I remember walking through all the rubble
afterwards and being very scared, but we were OK. ... more >>

Yvonne, yes I was in the

cereal bowls with nursery rhymes. I remember I used to eat my cereal as

Seeing Butlers on the corner and I
can almost hear the old news vendor shouting "Standard, Standard -
Evening Standard" outside the bank. I do remember having to run up
there, often waiting for the latest newspaper on a Saturday night with
the football results. As for the Municipal Sports' Ground at Spikes
Bridge, we spent most of our childhood in that park playing rounders and
races, organised by
ourselves, and in the playground, completely forgetting the time some
days until my mum would appear and tell us to come home. I don't
remember those gates though. Perhaps the old iron gates were taken off
for the war effort like many others were. Not much money then, but
wonderful, happy days. Something that nothing can take away! ... more >>

Pauline, you did exactly what we
all used to do - we organised our own games such as rounders for
ourselves. There was never any problem playing out - in fact it was
normal and encouraged. Rounders was just one of many of these games.
Perhaps what is going wrong with life today is that kids have no
comprehension of playing games with each other in open spaces

Wonderful photo of Greenford high
street 1938. I haven't been to Greenford since the early fifties, but I
used to walk there in my lunch hour when I was working at Cow &
Gate Milk Depot by the Western avenue roundabout in 1945. We had an hour
and a half lunch then, and I used to get out while the rest of the
staff were cooking their dinner in the large kitchen there. They tried

I'm afraid I don't remember much
about the shops in Greenford when I walked there in my lunch break. I do
know I was always in and out of Woolworths, as being 14 there were so
many knick-knacks to look at. Not that I bought much in there. I think
"Brunitex" shampoo was something I used to buy. The local fishmonger's
was another shop I frequented, as we had acquired a cat in the yard of
Cow & Gate, and we
used to cook fish for him occasionally. One incident which stands out in
my mind quite clearly, is as I was getting off the bus back from
Greenford to work, carrying the cat's fish heads and some
scraps, the newspaper it was wrapped in gave way. The lot landed on the
platform of the bus, and the conductor was not very pleased. It stunk so
much as it was a hot day, and it was difficult to pick it up with wet
newspaper! I think he kicked some of it out of the bus. When I crossed
the road and got into work, I'm afraid I just collapsed with laughing. ... more >>

Seeing that lovely photo on our flickr site of Lloyds bank evoked more
memories for me, and also some queries. What was the name of the road by
the side of Lloyds bank and also the name of the Hairdressers next to
it? I think Len mentioned it once, but I can't find it. I believe the
shop next to Clifford Evans could be Mcfisheries unless anyone else can
name it. Len has already filled in quite a few
of the shops already up to Herbert road with the Times Furnishing on
the corner (where the Communists used to do their bit). There waa
Meyers, Sainsbury's, Stones (electrical shop), James Walker the
Jewellers. Can anyone remember any more shops in that stretch? ... more >>

May be way off beam here, but I
seem to recall two shoeshops in that parade where Clifford Evans,
Sainsbury's, MacFisheries, etc. were back in the 50's. One was Lilly
& Skinners, and the other one I thought was Dolcis. Shoe shops were
my favourite shops - when I was little I always wanted to work in one!
There was another one on the other side of the Broadway - I think it was
a Clark's shop. Do you remember having your feet put in the X-ray machine in Lilley & Skinners? ... more >>

Daniels main shop in Ealing has
been gone for several years now. They sold off the site and flats built.
Did hear they were supposed to be opening a new shop there when
building finished, but hasn't happened yet. There is still a small shop
called Daniels where they sell beds and odd bits of furniture. But they
do have a lovely department store in Windsor.

Yes, Burtons, Fifty Shilling
Tailors and John Collier were all local chains in the 50s & 60s.
But from the mid 60s, fashions changed so fast.... there was nevr going
to be a future for a chain called Fifty Shilling Tailors with an art
deco shop frontage. Then 30 years on art deco came back into fashion

It was lovely to read that the
287-year-old Organ at St George's Church, Tudor road Southall, has just
been replaced. Once again, it evoked memories of long ago when, as

regularly, you could buy more when the balance was down to about £2. It
was fantastic, as socks, shirt, trousers, sports jacket and tie totalled
around £7. It may not

I remember Strakers - the Manager was a very dapper little man, but can't recall his name.
Jones & Knights was another department store in West Ealing that
used the overhead money boxes.Sold mainly ladies underwear, hosiery etc.
Lots of things cost something+three farthings, and sometimes you got a
box of matches instead of the farthing change. The shop was on the same
side of the road as Rowse's,
but up further, round about the same place as Abernethies. We had to
use Abernethies to buy my school uniform when I went to Ealing Grammar
School for Girls. Horrible brown uni with either a beret or a felt hat
with elastic under the chin to hold it on.We were not allowed to eat
anything in the street, not even a sweet, whilst wearing school uni. Bit
different from now. ... more >>

The manager at Strakers was Mr Ridgeway. His wife Grace also worked there too.
A few of the shops I remember on the other side of the road at that time are Scotch Wool shop.
Chemist(Moss I think) Dorothy Perkins, Times Furniture.Mac Fisheries,and
I think The Maypole as well. From there I went to work in Uxbridge and
although I passed the shops every day twice a day didn't really take a
lot of notice then.
memories get a bit muddled with those that were there when I was very young and those that came later.

Residents of Sipson, near Heathrow, divided over sale
|
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 26-Jan-2010
|
BAA has offered to purchase all properties within the area. A quarter
of residents of Sipson village, which will be wiped out if Heathrow's
third runway goes ahead, have tried to sell their homes to BAA.
Proposals for the runway have made it difficult for residents of Sipson village to sell their properties.
Heathrow operator BAA has offered to buy 400 homes in the village.
Almost 100 owners have applied for their properties to be purchased and
BAA has made offers on 45, since it launched a scheme in October 2009.
'Fair compensation'
BAA has offered to purchase properties within the area in its Property Market Support Bond scheme.
The airport operator said it would also fund legal and removal costs and
stamp duty equivalent to the value of properties at the time they are
sold to BAA.
But anti-expansion campaigners and residents have raised fears that the
community is being destroyed and have urged other residents not to sell
up.
It is in line with sorts of schemes that are used in this instance and we think it's fair compensation
Michael Forster, BAA strategy director
"We want people to sit tight until after the general election, and see
if we have a more sympathetic government that would drop the third
runway," said anti-expansion campaigner Geraldine Nicolson.
"We are asking people not to sell up and move out," she added. "We want to keep the fabric of the community."
Sipson resident Lynne Davies filled out the form for BAA to buy her home
before she changed her mind, deciding the offer was too low.
"If I agreed to the price, I couldn't afford to move near to my family," she said.
BAA strategy director Michael Forster said: "We did consult on the scheme we brought forward."
"It is in line with sorts of schemes that are used in this instance and we think it's fair compensation," he added.
The government has agreed to a third runway but the Conservatives and Lib Dems are fighting the plans.
If all goes according to the government's plan, construction on Heathrow's third runway will start in 2015.

Whilst I'm not massively in
favour of concreting over England I find it hard to feel any sympathy
for the residents near Heathrow. Firstly the vast majority (over 92%)
moved there since the seventies when it was already a busy international
airport and have enjoyed reduced rates, cheap insulation etc etc and
secondly why should a handful of NIMBY's wreck the chances of West
London becoming an international
air traffic hub. Amsterdam, Madrid and Paris are rubbing their hands at
the prospect of Heathrow not being able to expand as they will benefit
from the investment tourism and jobs that expansion WILL create, mind
you this governments APD will probably kill off any growth potential
which this country desperately needs. Big company's will only invest in a
country which can offer the infrastructure to support its investment
but sadly Heathrow is 30 years behind all major city airports around the
world and local residents seem to want to keep it that way despite so
many of them relying on the airport for jobs directly or supporting
industries in the local area. ... more >>

Thanks Vince. Interesting and
absolutely right. It is interesting looking at other threads,
particularly the "Longford" one of about a month ago, how the area has
changed since the war. But so has the rest of the world. It was
interesting to see how, many years later, we find that the airport was
built illegally, based on false information being given to Parliament at
the time it was sanctioned.
But that was nearly 70 years ago and we are where we are - as you
say, most of the inhabitants of Sipson (and Longford) have moved into
the area in recent years surely knowing that the airport was only ever
going to grow bigger. This is why this message board helps to preserve
memories of some of the older inhabitants of an area that would
otherwise be lost over time. How wonderful it would have been if the
camera and tape recorders had been invented 100 years earlier. ... more >>

Hi there;-Following the recent
comments re:Heathrow Airport, I thought I would add my two-penneth. I
totally agree the building of Heathrow was a complete whitewash, and
speaking not only as a local historian but having been born and bred in
Hayes I have watched the airport grow from meage beginnings to the
sprawling abcess which it now is. It has already swallowed up several
old local villages and
should not be allowed to do the same to Sipson and Harmondsworth. That
would not be progress, just sheer vandalism. And what about the
possibility of the loss of Cherry Lane Cemetery, speaking for myself
there are are several generations of our family buried there and I for
one would not stand back and see this happen. I am not against aircraft.
I used to be a plane-spotter and still today have an interest in them
particulary military. I now live in Hounslow on the approach to runway
28Left, and the planes come right over my back garden. You do get used
to them, but having said that would prefer it if they were somewhere
else. ... more >>

I can see some concerns about
Heathrow expansion but where do we have an international airport? in the
Costwolds, Thames Estuary, The Pennines or even on an uninhabited
Scottish island or should it be in the CAPITAL. Every major industrial
nation needs a modern and effective transport infrastructure and we the
saviours of the world are as usual left behind, just look at our close
neighbours, Paris,
Madrid, Munich, Cologne, Amsterdam and Brussels all have modern
uncrowded airports that can handle increasing numbers of passengers. Get
real Heathrow is here to stay but if not expanded it'll become a white
elephant with all major airlines evacuating to mainland Europe. I too
have realtives in Cheery Tree Lane Cemetary but I think they would want
me to prosper and not survive on sentimentalism. I was born and bred in
Southall on the flight path of runway 05 (the crash of 58' was only 1200
yards from my house as the plane fly's from Kelvin Gardens) and they
flew over 24 hours a day whenever there was a sou'westerly, not
forgetting Heathrow origanly had 4 runways. I now live on the flightpath
to Gatwick and I prey they'll build a second runway because the
prosperity and jobs it will bring to West Sussex will be more than
welcomed. Remember all the folk who did not want the M25? where would
all that traffic be now....Hayes, Southall, Sipson, Longford and
Bedfont, shall we do away with the M25? The ever burgeoning population
needs jobs, jobs come from expansion, expansion will not please everyone
but it has to happen. I've yet to see 100's of thousands jobs created
by wind turbine manufacturers or solar panel installers. I'm sure that
if the BAA offered all who are affected 10% over valuation of their
properties there would be a stampede. The opposition to Heathrows third
runway is NIMBY'ism at its ugliest. ... more >>
