Hi Len, many thanks for helping
my daughter Andrea get in touch with Steve, the message board certainly
does its stuff, I'm keeping an eye on everything now just in case
something of interest should turn up. We Southallonians stick together
don't we. Regards and happy christmas.

Hi Pat Pauline and myself are so
pleased that they have made contact as you said Southall was a great
Town in our time I am afraid Hayes is going the same way too old do
anything now as I said to Andrea we should have moved to Plymouth with
our children we go down a few times a year may I wish you all a Merry
Christmas and a peaceful 2010
- Re: Elsworth and Hill
by barry raymond (Member 10239180) on 9-Dec-2009
Hi Len;-Yes I certainly aggree
with you, Hayes like Southall are not what they used to be. Thankfully
we still have our memories. With regards to Hayes to give a 'for
instance' in the 50's & 60's we had brilliant carnival processions
which began in Keith Road, up over Station Bridge and straigt through
the town. These were often very long processions with all the local
firms using their lorries i.e.
Joe Moore/Everleys and Annis and sometimes as many as for bands, one of
the favourites being the Dagenham Girl Pipers. Beacause of the length
of the procession there were often three or four gaps between to allow
traffic across. Then it all started to go wrong, they switched the
route, followed by the introduction of ridiculous width restrictors and
chicanes in some of the roads, which the large lorries could not
negotiate, and to top it all they pedestrianised Hayes Town, I have
lived in Hounslow for several years but always used to visit the
carnival every July, we don't bother anymore. ... more >>

My nostalgic memories are of the
summer holidays in 1945 when I had left school to work at Heston Farm
before I started a proper job. I can still remember those long hot
summer days stringing up the tomato plants in the fields and picking up
all the windfalls in the orchard - those wonderful cox's and russet
apples, freely available to eat as we picked! We were all children from
the local schools, - a
lot from Southall, some of them in my own class. We had such a lovely
time. Whenever I smell a tomato on the vine, the memories come flooding

Love all the memories of the
comedy shows etc, my comedy hero was (and still is) Norman Wisdom. I
remember mum & dad taking me to see him at either the Chiswick or
Shepherds Bush Empire. He had people in stitches before he even opened
his mouth. He was billed with Alma Cogan and Billy Cotton. When Billy
Cotton did his 'lovely bunch of coconuts' song all the band would throw
hudreds of cotton wool
balls out into the audience, unforgettable. Not keen on todays shows
with one exception, Phantom of the Opera, when I heard Michael Crawford
singing Music of the Night I was amazed, people always think of him as
hapless Frank Spencer, but he has a wonderful voice. ... more >>

Yvonne, I have added a picture already showing an aerial view of Heston
Airport taken on the 9th June 1951 at the BOAC Sports Festival held
there .This was before the gravel pits were started but gives an
indication of where the Miles Hawk landed at dusk in the late 1950's.

In the late 1950's/early 1960's I
witnessed a Miles Hawk aircraft circling near my house at Heston
approching dusk. Later it landed behind houses in The Vale, Heston and I
cycled to where
I was able to obtain access to the airfield via my old school playing
field. There was no sign of the pilot and the aircraft had managed to
land on a narrow strip between the gravel pits and Berkeley School field.
I went back home to fetch my box camera, but was just in time to
see the Hawk being manhandled into the Hestair Hangar about a quarter of
a mile away and the hangar door closed. By this time it was dusk,
but I have always harboured a question, why did the pilot land, did he
run out of fuel or simply ran out of visual flying conditions ? ... more >>

One possibility in finding out
why the Miles Hawk landed might be if an ex employee of Fairey Aviation
still remembers seeing the aircraft taking off possibly the next day,
during day-light hours, although any person would have to be over 80
years old. Doubtfull if any ex Hestair employees still around.

but only one photo which I took of a Augusta Bell Ranger helicopter
there in 1966, long after the Airport closed in 1947.
This is viewable on Air Britain Photographic Images Collection website,
just enter Heston in the search engine and my name as photographer.
I also have other pictures of the

by lawrence hole (Member 10242696) on 2-Dec-2009
Sorry Len,
this was a Miles Hawk Trainer, G-AKKV which I saw on the BOAC Sports
Festival day as a 13 year old. I was there having cycled from
Heston.
Since 1951 when I first became interested in aviation, I have seen a
total of 9 aircraft using Heston Airport since the official closure in
1947. Although it appears likely that the movements records for this
airfield have not survived, at least I can account for the following aircraft in addition to the Miles Hawk Trainer on these notes.
In cronological date order, these were:
09 June 1951- 5 aircraft from the Airways Aero Association, Denham for
the BOAC Sports Festival (see separate pages) G-ACIT DH Dragon, Auster
Aiglet, reg. unknown, G-ALOX DH Tiger Moth and 2 Miles Hawk Trainers,
including G-AKKV (see: www.abpic.co.uk/photo/1018874) and G-AKKY.
ca. 1952/53 Swiss Messerschmidt ME108 Taifun, HB-DUB (a fast ship !)
ca. 1953/54 red/silver Miles Gemini, reg unidentified, taking off over
Cranford end (possibly after having Fairey Metal propellors fitted)
1955/56 Miles Hawk Trainer, believed to be G-ADWT
May/59 Westland Widgeon, G-ANLW which collected 3 MTCA officials at
Heston enroute from Yeovil to the new Battersea Heliport in order to
make the first landing there prior to its official opening.
04/03/63 Bristol 171 G-AMWH British European Airways
Sept 1964 Augusta Bell Ranger helicopter, G-ASNV (see www.ab-pic.co.uk/photo/11115128/
Other helicopters may well have included the Fairey Gyrodyne and
possibly the Rotordyne since the Company had their premises here and at
Hayes.
My final report is taken from Tim Sherwood's excellent book "Coming Into
Land" which details the history of Heston, Hanworth, Hounslow and the
original Heathrow (Great Western) airfields and is purchaseable from
Hounslow Library.
This mentions the departure of a Board of Trade helicopter from Heston
Airport to Sevenoaks on the 06 June 1978 after the CAA had vacated their
offices there.

The 2 Miles Hawk Trainers were
from the Airways Aero Association at Denham and for static display only
together with a DH. Tiger Moth. This was to introduce the Flying Club
possibilities of BOAC/BEA to the visitors I have added 2 additional
pictures of this event since they are also very relevant to the history
of Heston Airport, although separate the the mystery landing of the
Miles Hawk in ca. 1955/6 or possibly later. ... more >>

O K Airobuffs. Here's a query
for you. When l was a planespotter say 1958 - 64, a French airliner
landed at London Airport as it then was called. We thought at first
it was a DC-6 or DC-7, but close inspection showed it was neither. It
was owned by Union Transports Aeromaritime (written along the top of the
fuselage) and had TAI in huge black letters on the tail against a
backgound of green and
silver horizontal stripes. Nobody there knew what it was, and l have
lost the registration l wrote down. l was told it was the first
(possibly only) time an airliner of that type and of that airline had
ever landed at LAP. Any ideas?? ... more >>

Hi Lawrence;-Love all your info
on Heston, I too am something of an aircraft buff. Born and bred in
Hayes, dad'd family came from Southall and I now live in Hounslow. I am a
local historian and have written three books and numerous articles on
the area. I think my interest in aircraft began A]having a late uncle in
the RAF DFM holder, and my time in 9th Hayes Air Scouts when I took my
first flight in an
Auster out of Fairoaks. Anyway among my collection I have this very good
A4 size original booklet entitled 'About Heston' all about the airport
with a Forword by Airwork. There is no date but I presume it to be
perhaps late thirties, it has some smashing pictures in it and the
centre pages advertise the Puss Moth 120 HP Gipsy III inverted engine
and the Gipsy Moth 100 HP aircraft for sale from Brian Lewis and C.D.
Barnard Ltd. at their showroom at Heston. By the way you would not be

Cannot see it has been corrected
from the entry above, but the aircraft which crashed in Kelvin Gardens
in 1958, was a Vickers Viking which was an ex military Vickers Varsity
(military designation of a Viking), it was on a training flight and only
had crew on board both sadly perished.
- Re: Heston Airport 1929-1947
by lawrence hole (Member 10242696) on 3-Dec-2009
Barry,
I have the booklet "About Heston" which has some very good photos of
Heston Airport in the early days of 1929/1930's when it was first
established for recreational flying only. Airwork was the driving force
and which grew to become a multi national aviation repair and
maintenance conglomerate. Heston Aircraft became Hestair after the
war ended and still had engineers capable of aircraft
maintenance in the 1950's, so it is possible that might have had some
contract to work on for the Miles Hawk Major, although I think myself
that it just ran out of daylight hours to fly.(VFR-visual flight rules)
My father's name was Joseph James Hole but not related to anyone else in
Heston since he was born in Ashford, Kent. Quite a coincidence of
name however.

Does anyone have any old pictures
of Heston Airport which are originals ? There are so few photos
overall for this period considering the fact that the airfield held
considerable importance for civil aviation in the years before the war
especially.
The web site Science and Society has a few civil aircraft types and
views of the buildings and Flight Global Archive-military from the war
period.
Perhaps Len with your involvement in aviation,
including seeing PM Chamberlain land at Heston may possibly have some old photos. ... more >>

Lens mention of Chamberlain returning from Munich in 1938 to Heston
Airport-I can remember the newsreels showing him waving some papers,
exclaiming "It is peace in our time"-surely the biggest whopper of all
time. This reminded me of a very corny joke going around. Much of the
discussion between Germany and Poland was the so-called "Polish

Keith,
A little bit off the matter in subject, however
the aircraft you saw at LHR in 1958-1964 might possibly have been the
french built armanac on charter to UTA from Air France at a guess.
Looking on the UTA history web site, the only types normally operated by
UTA at this time were DC6B's. The armanac was operational around
this time I believe and could have been painted in UTA's colour
scheme, or at least that is my theory. No pictures of this
aircraft type found on the Internet, although Air Britain Historians
have done an article in recent months in their Aviation World magazine I
seem to remember. ... more >>

not one of that type had ever landed there before, so couldn't be a DC6.

Keith,
A fellow member of Air Britain who also lived in the same street as me
in Heston says he saw a S.E. Armagnac at LHR ON THE 17th Feb. 1958 in
UTA colours and TAI on the tailplane. Registration was F-BAVF. If
you look on the Wikepedia website under Sud Est Armagnac, it gives you
the history and some pictures of this aircraft.

Just to get back to the
unexpected late landing of the Miles Hawk Major aircraft, I have now
added a photo of a similar aircraft which was owned by Shell Mex at
Heston in the 1930's.
This gives an idea of what the Hawk would have looked like on the apron
near to the front of Hestair's hangar, which was situated at the far
eastern end of the group of hangars. Have a look on Flickr's website
which has some other photos I have added. ... more >>

ever landed at LHR, my search is over. Very many thanks - it took
everyone by surprise when it turned up and l can still remember the

Keith- re the Armanac, there were
sightings of this type also in 1957 at LHR, Air France used to use them
but they were not favoured by them and they subsequently sold them to
SAGETA for use in the Congo. Much info. on the history and reports
received via my membership of Air Britain and our information exchange
website- I had many replies !

Check website
www.britishpathe.com , there are several newsreels on Heston
Airport-"Ford to Build Aeroplanes Here", Hard luck Smithy,
Everest Air Expedition, Get Air Minded-(Sir Alan Cobham), Mrs Victor
Bruce on her Round the World flight. All very historical.

by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 7-Dec-2009
Thank you Lawrence. l thought
the one l saw was the only one ever at LHR. We saw this one from the
Queens Building. It was definitly UTA-TAI and not Air France. A
friend & I used to go there a lot cycling from Hanwell after school.
It was an easy cycle ride then, past the asylum, three bridges,
Tenetlow Lane then Cranford. Easy for kids on bikes then, - no fear
and no stupid crash helmets
- we would have been laughed at for wearing something so ridiculous.
Hardly any traffic and no worries. We sometimes met another lad who
had white curly hair and so had the nickname "Snowy" He lived in Hayes
and l'd like to hear of him again, but lost contact over 45 years ago
now. ... more >>

My memories of Heston Airport are from when I was in the ATC(1846
Squadron), 1942-1946. We would sometimes visit it, and if lucky would
have a flight in a De Havilland Dominie( the military version of the
Rapide.) During 1944-1945 we attended a gliding course on Sundays-our
single seater gliders (Kirby Cadet) were launched by Barrage Balloon
winches.I had the occasional flight in a two seater, piloted by an officer known as the major. Quite an experience, if a little scary at times. ... more >>

hamborough tavern, southall

I used to frequent this pub in the 1950's when they used to feature
some very good jazz at the "Club Octave" in the basement where they had a
bar. Does anyone remember Dave Morse and his quartet ? He often
had star guest artists such as Vic Ash on tenor and Harry Klein on
baritone saxes as well as other notable professional jazz musicians.
Also another pub "serving" good jazz was the White Hart, Southall with Bert Courtley's quintet. ... more >>

Hi Len, I would assume the
Elsworth you went to school with was either Peter, Bill, Reg or John (my
Dad known as Jack). Yes Mount Avenue is a cul-de-sac and was a lovely
place when I was growing up. My Dad passed away some six years ago and
other than Peter, his brothers are now sadly all gone. Peter lives with
his wife in Bletchley and I speak to him regularly so will ask if he
remembers you. I live
now in Cornwall and have done so for the past 20 years, would not go
back to Southall now though. Nice to hear from you. ... more >>

"Gone with the Wind" was fantastic with Clarke Gable as Rhett Butler and

These fabulous old film stars
names sure bring back memories. Pauline you mentioned Alan Hale, do you
remember in the 50's/60's there was a tv prog called Csey Jones about a
western railroad driver, think the tune went 'Casey Jones steaming and a
rolling'. Anyway correct me if I'm wrong was the lead, Casey Jones
played by Alan Hale Jnr.?
- Re: tv
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 29-Nov-2009
Hi Barry - You are quite right
Alan Dale Jnr was the star lead as Casey Jones. He was an engineer of
the steam-powered "Canonball Express" in 32 episodes 1957-58. His
father died in 1950, and the title "Jnr" was dropped. I'm afraid I can't
remember watching the series on TV although the tune rings a bell.

frightened after hearing my mum sing me that song that I started to cry
and ran away.I would think I was about 5 at the time. ... more >>

who know, or lived in or near the Cuckoo Estate, Hanwell. VERY
interesting and again an insight into community life that was all around

l think we must conclude that we
are talking about different John Lennons. However, l was at Drayton
Manor 59-64 and will now be amazed that there was anyone there with the
name John Lennon at the same time. I was part of the '59 intake.
Six weeks ago they had 50th anniversary at Ealing cricket club, (I could
not go). Only 7 out of a possible 91 were there.

Lennon at D M G S, but perhaps l'm going old & senile.
Paul Stuart FIDDES was a year ahead of me - he is now one of Britiain's
greatest theologians and you can look him up on "Wapedia" etc. l do

Yes, Fiddes and Rick Wakeman
overlapped a bit at Drayton Manor. It was a very good school and some
kids came from Hayes - one from W Drayton in my class. Had to use
train to or from Hanwell station every day and walk - nobody had parents
take them to school in those days even if (the minority) parents had
cars. Fiddes was 58 intake Wakeman was 60 (poss 61) intake. Very
good school
