Southall convent ?

When i used to work for International Aeradio, back in the 70's. I was
told that there used to be a convent there. Or at least on some of the
land at the back, where the carpark was. Can anyone shed any light on
this for me. Many thanks.

l suspect this thread is going
"off track" l think the original convent was one that was some
offshoot of the medieval Trinitarians. Because the lands wee still in
the ownersip of the (Catholic) Church, later convents, childrens "homes"
(and that is an exaggeration - they were more dumping grounds) were put
on the site at a much later date.

Have been researching St. Mary's
Orphanage for boys for many years. Just to put you in the picture, the
site was originally His Majesty's Ordnance Depot built during the threat
of invasion by Napoleon, sometimes known as North Hyde Barracks. they
had their own cuts off the canal, coopers yards (barrels) and surrounded
by mounds. at it's height the area where Convent Way now is stored in
excess of 450,000 kegs
of powder. The site was purchased by the Roman Catholic Church in 1854
and converted it into an Orphanage for boys which was put under the
charge of the Belgium Order of Brothers of Our Lady of Mercy. It was
enlarged in the 1870's and in 1903 the institution passed into the hands
of another order, The Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
This order is still active and based in Chigwell, Essex. The home was a
self-sufficient community with it's own farm and prize-winning band.
Many boys served and were lost in both the Boer and First World Wars. ... more >>

At it's height, it housed well over 600 boys, mainly from under-priveleged or orphans on the whole from the London area.

as I know Convent Way comes under Hounslow, but the old International

site

convent way looks as though it
probably made into a rd for the modern houses needed 1930s.google camera
van shows that age houses...orphans diagram shows...barrack row
going from orphanage off east in the line of the now convent way...and
convent way on a to z shows all the ragged bits jotting out of it that
the old os maps show...old track curves into series of dock areas to the
canal there.the 1790
threat invasion napolionic wars..northyde heston barracks ammunition
storage..canal cuts there..widening canal for boat turning area..so
convent way coming out of orphanage owned land follows their barrack
row..the mounds of cuts in canal there..the old barracks docks cuts area
were filled in...my aunt at the common kids played over there..over the
mounds she said....keith the land was owned by army ammunition

They had the Trident and BAC 111 simulators there.

I lived in Wenworth Rd 1945-1962.
I remember the building, but as a boy I never knew their history.
The backside was derelict and the front was some sort of offices or other. Sometimes used as a Sea Scouts Parade ground.
When the buildings where used by BEA they trained flight attendents there.
There was a large area of land between the houses on Wentworth Rd and the perimeter of Heston Airport, mostly unused except for some allotments.
Behind the Convent was a small orchand where we would go scrumping and
generaly hang out during the summer holidays. A prety good place for
kids to play, with two large mounds of earth to add to the fun. All
along the length of Wentworth Rd there would be bonfires on Guy Fawkes
night.
Shortly after the war the whole neighbourhood stood to watch one of the
first jet fighters, the DH Vampire land at Heston Airport. the first
time any of us had seen a jet aircraft.
Later the area became a gravel pit.

My mum started work at
International Aeradio in 1956, and i worked there from 1967, on the site
of the convent. We worked in a chapel that had been left standing and
converted to an office. It was demolished in 1969 and a priest had to
called in before that happened. There were many stories about it being
haunted and a tunnel linking it with the church in cranford park, and a
'grey lady' ghost of cranford park? Anyone know anything about that?
I lived in North Road on the corner opposite North Parade, remember
Brockhouse newsagents? Went to North Road school 1956 -1962, then
Southall Grammar until 1967. I remember visiting a friends house in
Mount Avenue on the left as you go up the street, trying to remember his
name. My father was born in Southall in 1921 , lived near Tudor Road
with four brothers, they then moved to North Road where he stayed until
he died in 1995, I myself live there until 1979. Anyone else remember
the plane crash in 1958-ish? I remember the explosion waking me up. ... more >>

Thanks Yvonne, i'll try to locate

this thread is that the chapel was there at the convent site, and many
haunting stories, sightings and experiences, to the extent that I know
that many of the burly printers there wouldn't walk through it on the
night shift even though it meant a longer walk. I worked in it for two
years, and my mother

I lived in Manor Way from 1943 /
1963, and therefore grew up in this area. The area was a deserted old
school, possible convent, with the Sea Cadets one side, and the chewing
gum factory immediately behind, off Southall Lane, before the Militia
Canteen and the cottages.
The Orchard referred to was Gregories, who had a farm further down the lane, opposite the airfield.
The 2 mounds had the framework of the machine guns, which were dismantled after the war,but gave us kids plenty of fun.

I was born in Wentworth Road and I
remember the convent well. I used to climb over the railings and play
with the naval gun complete with shells and the helicopter that the Sea
Cadets used when they were there. I also got into the chapel; it had
stained glass windows. I remember the Gregorys house in Southall Lane; I
used to go to school with John Gregory and his sister at Western Rd
primary school. My
mother used to work at the dreaded tube Factory. A friend of mine Mick
Harker used to live at Canteen Cottages next to the old barracks, then
being used as a chewing gum factory. The gum was pretty awful even to
us kids. Used to play on the mounds and make camps with my brother and
sister and the vast hordes of children that were then around (no TV no
contraception no abortion). Interesting that some correspondents were
talking about Donovans; Charlie Donovan used to live just down the road
from us. We used to set light to the fields quite regularly; children
really are appalling but we enjoyed it. Used to fish for newts and
sticklebacks and make rafts on the gravel pits; catapults, air rifles
and gunpowder bombs. I remember the building of International Aeradio;
they bulldozed the lot including the 10 conker trees that the convent
planted to feed their draught animals; no more conkers. I could go on
and on but if anybody wants any more info (and I’ve got a lot) please
feel free to post.

Just found the above site on google. Contains a lot of references to
Heston, and a reference to the lane that led from the 3 Magpies -
possibly an extension to the one from Trumpers crossing. All lost now
but > > "Heathrow Airport derives its name from a hamlet called
Heath Row, which was obliterated during the construction of the airport.
The hamlet of Heath Row was on the western part of Ho unslow
Heath and lay along a road that ran in a southerly direction from near
the Magpies Inn on the bath Road at Sipson in the Parish of
Harmondsworth. The name "Heath Row" can be found on maps and documents
going back several hundred years, long before Judge Heath was born.
Some strange variations in spelling occur, as in the case of Hithero in
John Warburton's map of Middlesex dated 1749. It appears as Heath Row
in John Rocque's map of Middlesex of 1754.
Judge Heath was a Judge of the Court of Common Please from 1780 to 1818
and had a house in Hayes about three miles NNE of Heath Row and about
600 yards west of the Parish Church of Saint Mary at Hayes. The house
was demolished many years ago. It stood on the north side of a lane
which is now known as Judge Heath Lane and so commemorates his
connection with Hayes."
Further information:
In John Ogilvy's map of Middlesex of 1675 the hamlet of Heath Row is shown as "Hetherow".
In "The Place Names of Middlesex" by Cover, Mawer and Stenton, the name
is given as "Hetherow" in the time of King Henry V, "Hetherowfeyld" in
the time of King Henry VII, Hitherowe in 1547 and 1553. It also states
that it was probably the home of John atte Hetthe, i.e. John who lived
at, or on, the heath. Many people whose ancestors lived on or near a
heath owe their surname to their ancestors' place of residence in the
same way as people with surnames such as Bradford, Chester, London,
etc., may be descendants of people who lived in those towns in the days
when people were adopting surnames which became hereditary."
It also describes how the public were conned into the airport being
built there in the first place - (not the firs or last example of a
goverment telling lies to its electorate) A VERY interesting site and
worth a look.

Yes the old Northolt airport entrance was half way along the A40 and you
could until recently still see traces of where it was as you whizzed
along. USAF always had their own entrance near S Ruislip

It's worth mentioning that Sid
James lived in Iver, Bucks in the 60's - not far from the church - in a
house, which I believe, was called Delaford Park. It was surrounded by a
massive wall which was very high. This was very convenient for him when
he was working on the many "Carry On" films at Pinewood Studios, which
was not far from there. We used to get our petrol in Iver village, just
across the road from the wall! ... more >>

Hi Pauline;-
Yes you are right, Sid James's house was called Delaford Park, on the
right as you went up the hill towards the Church. I worked for many
years at Milton Hutchings commercial nurseries Pield Heath Rd. in the
60's (did my City & Guilds at Norwood Hall). Many of my workmates
lived up in Iver, so went there frequently. Saw Sid James several times
coming out he used to drive one of the big
old Rover cars, white. A friend of our family worked for North Thames
Gas, and I remember him telling us he went to Sid's house once to check
his system, only intended to be half hour job, he ended up being offered
a drink by the pool, and spent about two hours chatting, he said he was
one of the nicest chaps he had ever met. ... more >>

Yes, the chaps in the garage said
he was a 'smashing bloke'. I expect you remembered Iver when the
humpback bridge was there and you had to give way for oncoming traffic!
It was a very picturesque village, with a wonderful old baker' shop. It
all seemed to change when royalty moved out from the area. I can't
remember who it was, but everyone said the same. My husband had an
engineering business in Cowley, so we were up and down that road for many years until we moved from Langley. ... more >>

Mention of Pinewood reminded me
that I played football for the Pinewood Studios team in 1953/54 (I
think). The "football" shirts that we wore were actually rugby
jerseys that had featured in a rugby match in "Doctor in the House" (or
one of the "Doctor" films).
I used to cycle to and from the studios, for the games, from my home in
Southall. I found the hump-backed bridge tough on the way home.

Yes David, you are quite right.
It was "Doctor in the House" at the fictional hospital of "St
Swithin's." Just out of interest it was the most popular box office film
of 1954 in Great Britain. The film was seen by more people in its
first year on cinema release than any other in British cinema history.
The climax of the film was a rugby match which St Swithin's won! That
certainly was a mammoth bike ride.

Hi yvonne, Len & co. Have
recently acquired two or three photos of J.H. Moore's lorries parked
outside his base at Oswald Rd. Southall, probably 50's or early 60's. I
know Joe Mooore also had a yard in Pump Lane, Hayes and his lorries were
often used in Hayes Carnival. Anyone know when he finished ? by the way
all his lorries were given ladies/girls names painted above the cab,
don't know if they were family related. Will send you some copies Yvonne if you are interested. ... more >>

At 94 Baker Street there is a
blue plaque on the wall to John Lennon (1940-1980) where the "Apple
Boutique" was opened on 7 December 1967. It was painted in bright
psychedelic colours, and at the time many of the nearby shops complained
about it. It was one of the first business ventures of the Beatles'
"Apple Corps" selling clothes. However, the store was not successful,
and it was closed within eight months on 31 July 1968. They gave most of the remaining stock away. ... more >>

church; Hello, hello, who's your lady friend, who's the little girlie by
your side; Hands, knees and boomps-a-daisy, etc. etc. No T.V, but

Yvonne's mention of songs long
ago, reminds me of my dad. A cockney born, he had a brother-my Uncle
Will-who had been a stage hand in the old misic halls. Hence I learnt
from dad various old time favourites-"Any old iron, any old iron-----"
" Has anyone seen my sister Mary with her eye balls out of joint"-dad
was full of stories of Nellie Wallace. She was in trouble with the a
local watch committe for
a song " She sits among the cabbages and peas---!". To please them, she
modified it to " She sits among the cabbages and leeks!!"
If anyone wants any of these in more detail, please let me know.(Michaelprf@aol.com) ... more >>

Yes, Stanley Holloway in "My Fair
Lady" - "Get me to the church on time" was a classic. No-one could
have performed that song better. I belonged to a drama group for twenty
years or more, and we did an old-time music hall on stage. We had to
make our own costumes and hats ourselves out of clothes we had acquired
in our cupboard at our local W.I. They looked very authentic. At one
time in our thirties we
did the "Can-can" in a "Twenties" show. I remember my husband helping
me to machine the sequined knickers for the "Can can" and he
accidentally sewed the legs up! We also took our shows out to the local
hospitals and old folks homes. They were wonderful days. ... more >>

Yes, it was done on a Singer
sewing machine, Yvonne. I still have it upstairs in my box room.
Totally neglected now though. My husband was a dab-hand on it (being a
Toolmaker). My children were very young when I joined the group, so any
help available was appreciated - until he machined over my can-can
knickers! We used old sheets and dyed them (all different colours) for
our twenties show and then
added the fringes. They looked fantastic. They were some of the
happiest days of our lives, and we all remained good friends although
living miles apart. I will ask my sister about the sewing machines she
used whilst at Dormers. ... more >>

Wells at all. She was sports mad, and was one of their top runners. She
used ny mother's singer machine at home. My singer was the heavy type,
with the iron sides. That's why it's still in the box room because it
would be a mammoth task to move it downstairs!

Flying Fortress Crash Landing
|
by David A. Cavell (Member 10037516) on 13-Nov-2009
|
Len, I was very interested in your mention of the Flying Fortress crash landing, because I went to see it!
In the field where it landed, there were stout wooden posts at regular
intervals, and I understood that they were to stop enemy planes (or
gliders) using it as a landing field, so how the FF got down, or,
subsequently, got away again, I don't know, though I have often
wondered.
Anyway, on the day it
came down, word got around very quickly, and, as we lived fairly near,
some of us went to see it. It was being guarded by soldiers,
although they may have been Home Guard, and they allowed a few children,
of whom I was a lucky one, to get in to the aircraft, just to look.
We were not to walk around, or touch anything in the aircraft, but I was
put in to the undercarriage gun station, and, even then, I found it
frightening to look down to see just perspex between me and the ground
(about 5 to 6 feet below)!
I have often though how terrifying it must have been in that position when the plane was flying high in the air. ... more >>

that the fortress could land at Heston it was operational with
spitfires and hurricanes operating from there, there have been some
interesting threads on there lately a couple of new people have come on

that Bridge Rd. was Margarine Rd I have been around a few years never

Road previously known as Margerine Road from British History Online.
Type ''margerine road'' and it will say ''Otto Monstead margerine
factory named Bridge Road afterwards''. Also got my information from
Southall Library reference library.

Hi Len,
You are right about Heston having been a Spitfire base (I did not know
about Hurricanes), but I understand that it was a Top Secret
Reconnaissance base with the "Spits" flying recce trips, so you do not
normally see it listed amongst the Battle of Britain fighter bases.
My older brother, Keith (who died at a very young age), told me - and I believed him - that he managed to scramble through
the barbed wire around the airport, one day, and was "rewarded" by a
friendly pilot helping him to clamber up to look inside a Spitfire! ... more >>

David, Len,Baryy &co, I have
mentioned elsewhere that I used to visit Heston with the 1846ATC
squadron, and I remember seeing and going over Boston light bombers
there. Later in the war, it was also a base for a USAF high winged
monoplane-similar to , but larger than the Lysander. I think it was used
for transporting wounded soldiers after D-day. Irritatingly it had a
sound similar to that of a V1

I lived in Marlborough Road at
109. Born there, left 1960. My mum used to billet Army, navy and
Airforce men at our house. Bill who stayed with us, drove a Queen Mary.
He used to pick up crashed aircraft, and take them to Heston Aerodrome.
Some of you must remember that before he went to Heston he used to
drive round to our Street and park with the crashed aircraft on the flat
bed. Kids used to come
from miles around. We used to get into the cockpits, and take out
morse code tappers, bomb sites, headphones and all sorts of stuff.
Unfortunately I believe oiur parents handed all the stuff back in at the
end of the war. That Queen Mary used to take up about a quarter of
Marlborough Road. He came round with Junkers 88s, Mescher Schmitz,
Spitfires, Mosquitos, Hurricanes and all sorts. ... more >>

I have just found the following on the "Ian's Bus Stop" website and it
give full info of the history of Route 105 > > Route 105 ran daily
from Shepherd’s Bush (Wells Road) to Southall (Brent Road) via White
City, Westway, East Acton, Western Avenue, Park Royal, Hanger Lane
Station, Perivale, Greenford, Ruislip Road, Mornington Road, Somerset
Road, Cornwall Avenue, Allenby Road, North Road, Carlyle
Avenue, Lady Margaret Road and King Street, with a Sunday extension to
Hayes Station via North Hyde Road. In 1958 it was extended daily to
Hayes, replacing part of withdrawn route 83. In 1959 it was extended
during Monday to Friday peak hours to Hayes North via Church Road and
Lansbury Drive. In 1965 it was withdrawn completely between Hayes and
Hayes North, being replaced by new route 195, and withdrawn between
Southall and Hayes except for Sunday and Monday to Friday peak hours;
however, just a year later it was extended on Saturdays from Southall to
Hayes North Station, replacing route 195. In 1967 the Saturday service
was extended from Hayes North to Charville Lane Estate, and a year later
the Monday to Friday service was similarly extended, replacing the 195
on those days. Later that year Monday to Friday rush hour journeys were
diverted from Brent Road to Arrow Switches Factory. In 1971 Monday to
Saturday service was withdrawn between Southall (Brent Road) and
Charville Lane Estate, and Sunday service was withdrawn beyond Southall
(Town Hall), all replaced by a reintroduced route 195. In 1973 it was
diverted at Southall (Western Road) to run to Heathrow Central via
Cranford Lane, Cranford and Harlington Corner. At the same time the
Arrow Switches journeys were withdrawn. In 1975 the route was split,
with some Monday to Saturday journeys terminating at Southall (Havelock
Estate). In 1982 the Shepherd’s Bush terminal was changed from Wells
Road to Caxton Road, and the Monday to Saturday service was split into
two sections: Shepherd’s Bush–Southall and Greenford Station–Heathrow.
In 1983 it was converted to one-person-operation, and in 1984 diverted
in the Dormers Wells Lane area, now running between Allenby Road and
Southall via Dormers Wells Lane, Burns Avenue and Lady Margaret Road. In
1986 the route was extended from Heathrow Central via the Cargo Tunnel
to Heathrow (Terminal 4). In 1988 the Havelock Estate service was
withdrawn, replaced by new route E5. At the same time the Greenford
terminal was moved from Greenford Station to Greenford (Red ... more >>

The Quaker Oats factory is still
in operation but not much is produced there and staff numbers have cut
down drastically. The factory is on Bridge Road, before Quaker Oats
took over the factory in the 1930's - i think, it was owned by Otto
Monstead who produced margerine. Bridge Road was originally named
Margerine Road and there was also the Walls factory there where sausages
were produced. I remember seeing the Walls factory on fire due to a gas explosion in the 1980's. ... more >>

I Know there is the Nestle
factory in Hayes, however, the head offices for HP, Heinz and United
Biscuits (McVities) are in Hayes, not sure if United Biscuits or Heinz
had factories in hayes?. The United Biscuits factory- formerley known
as Mcvities is on Waxlow Road Harlesden NW10. I used to work there and
the factory was built in the early 1900's.
- Re: confectionery

British Railways had VERY busy
freight sidings at Hayes because of all the factories. Mostly these
were on the SOUTH side of the railway BUT, there were some on the north
side too and there was a siding which extended ACROSS the main road just
on the NORTH side of HAyes station and used into the 1960s. THey
used to have to stop all the traffic (Queues almost back as far as the
Grapes, 140 buses
delayed etc) when a goods train needed to cross the road to get into
factory sidings there even on Saturdays. Does anyone know what factory
this would have been? ... more >>

Just imagine that today
Stopping all the traffic in Hayes for 20 minutes so that a steam engine
pulling trucks could get in and out of sidings on the other side of the
High Street! And this was as recent as in the 60s, not like as if it
was only before 39-45 war!

Hi Keith & Co;- The railway
siding was shared by both the B.E.T. (British Electric Transformer) and
Wakefields (Castrol) it came out next to the canal bridge where there
was a level crossing. there was an old pub there called the Railway
Arms, which was demolished to make way for the Tumbler and adjoing
shops. As you say Keith this was still in operation well into the 60's.
My mum and aunts all worked at the B.E.T. I have some info on the shunting engine somewhere will dig it out and post it shortly.

Hi again Keith;-Re:the
trains/factories, To the north as Hayes & Harlington Station is
approached, was the works of Crow Catchpole & Company, later Tarmac.
They had a four-wheel diesel built in 1955 and another supplied to
Tarmac in 1967.To the north again, and immediately after leaving Hayes
& Harlington Station, was a connection from the Up Goods Loop, which
served both EMI (Gramaphone Co.) and C.C.
Wakefield (Castrol) The Gramaphone Co. originally had a four-coupled
steam Loco which was built before 1909 and supplied in 1917 This was
named 'The Nipper' after their logo It was replaced in 1920 by a
similiar loco known as 'The Master' i.e His Masters Voice. Wakefields
had a 1939 built four-wheel diesel, The B.E.T did not have their own
engine and a GWR Pannier Tank (0-6-0 PT) often shunted their siding. On
the other side of Bournes Bridge were further sidings leading to
McAlpines Depot and the Royal Ordnance Factory. ... more >>

Yes Barry, I know there were
sidings on the north side of the railway west of the station too, but l
remember the sidings that crossed the road from the east side of the
station holding up the traffic sometimes for as much as 20 minutes.
These were accessed from the a junction on the east side of the station
then the siding ran behind it and crossed over the road. Bus drivers
(55, 90B & 140) were furious at getting caught. Those are what really interested me. Thank you for the info ... more >>

Hi, The Martin Brothers Pottery
was on Glade Lane Southall which is right at the end of Havelock Road,
the Havelock Estate houses did not reach up to Glade Lane, the area
between Havelock Estate and Glade Lane was just open land ownded by
building company Wimpey. This area has now been transformed in to
another estate known as Top Locks which is situated next to Havelock
Estate. The pottery was originally
a soap factory and the Martin Brothers then took over the building.
Fine examples of the pottery can be viewed at Southall Library in the
Martinware room. Southall Library is Osterley Road Southall.
Martinware pottery does go for a lot of money and is very very valuable.
One of the Martin brothers - im not sure which one, is buried in the
cemetery on Havelock Road opposite the Sikh Temple. ... more >>

Thank you all. l do remember my
Dad talking about Glade Lane Nurseries and Melbury Avenue. As l said
on another thread, he died aged 92 in (January) 1999 and knew most of
the canal people in the 60s.
There was still a major, but rapdly dwindling canal community even then.
lt was a brilliant "community", A very few of the narrow boats
worked up to Apsley for the paper mills and also carrying
lime juice for Rose's. I think they were the last two "traffics"
north of Hayes, the final co;;apse of "lighterage" came very quickly
after the M1 opened and lorries were allowed to be bigger. ... more >>

Yes, some of the last barges, the
towed ones from Brentford, not the narrow boats, (up to Hayes) were
operated by a company called "Thames Lighterage"
- Re: Southall Pottery, Martin Brothers
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 9-Nov-2009
The wider barges would be towed
by a tug up from London Docks in a convoy of about 6 barges in 3 x pairs
of two, then split up at Brentford to be taken up the canal to the
individual factories, (Quaker Oats etc). This traffic was rapidly
declining and l think had finished by about 1965 as far as l know.

google says Thames Lighterage
& Wharfage merged and became "Thames & General Lighterage Ltd"
in 1968 and was taken over by "Cory Lighterage Ltd" at London 1980ish.
l do remember the Grand Union Brentford - Hayes section being quite
busy, even in the late 50's with the need for a few Saturday morning
barges, but the terminal collapse in the early 60s was rapid as more
motorways were planned and even
the railways lost out to it. That is why the once busy Southall -
Brentford Docks freight line closed soon afterwards and now only has
rubbish trains to the depot on the Great West Road ... more >>

There was a greyhound track in
Southall, the track was closed down and now on the same land of the
track is the Havelock primary school and nursey. The school is situated
halfway down Havelock Road and is on a much lower level than Havelock
Road so it was an ideal spot for a dog track. This has been confirmed
to me by Ray - a resident of havelock estate who is in his 60's, Ray's
family have always lived in the area even before Havelock estate was built and he remembers the dog track where the Havelock School now stands. ... more >>

Yvonne I was watching an antiques
show - not sure which one, and a Wally Bird by the Martin Brothers sold
for £15,000!!! Also, there is a fountain built by the Martin Brothers
in the grounds of the beautifull historic Manor House in southall green.
The Manor House dates from 1539 (i think) and is well worth a visit.
Its just a shame that the grounds are filled with alcoholics nowdays.

YOU HAVE TO READ THIS!! The
historic Manor House was built in the 1500's (1539 i think) and was
owned by the Awister family. Around the back of the main building there
are 2 beautiful bronze/iron figures that are built in to the original
stonework of the main building. These figures were given to the family
in the 1500's by a preist from Nepal who was visiting London.
Pitshanger museum tried to
acquire the figures but they were told where to go by the people who
look after Manor House (Ray and his team). An amazing (but haunted)
building. ... more >>

deteriorate day by day as southall has a great history. The library is
still open in southall and is very busy, well worth a visit. There are

Hi Len;-
I have quite a bit on the B17 that crashed it was roughly around where
the Western International Market now is. As you know they have just
built a 'new' market on the edge of the Parkway. Anyway just prior to
this I had the privalege to liase and co-ordinate between both Hayes
&Harlington History Society and Hounslow, of which I am a member, and
the pre-contractural archeaologists from Southampton
to arrange a visit by a select few to the site which was absolutely
immese, their findings were from various periods including Iron
Age/Bronze Age and Roman, many artefacts and cremations, described as
one of the largest sites in Middlesex. We had two visits one in Jan.
2006 and the other in June. Have everal photos if you are interested.
What was also interesting was that during the War both Cranford Park and
the neighbouring field i.e. the above site had massive concrete
stauntions zig-zagged across chained together to prevent glider landings
which we had seen from aeriel photos taken by the Luftwaffe and
captured after the War. The lower remains of some of these were also
discovered. ... more >>

have been trying for years to find what became of the impressive War
Memorial which bore the names of the boys lost in both the Boar and
first World War. We do have a picture of it. I am in regular contact
with Mike Shelly of the Catholic Childrens Society and he has spent
around 255 years trying to find out. I'm afraid I
agree with Yvonne, after much research we think it was vandalised and
simply bulldozed away. We know that it was there up until just before

My uncle Bert Howard worked for British waterways and lived at Bulls
Bridge Cottage (white washed) right next to Bulls Bridge at the

many years with my Aunt Daisy where they raised a family. Uncle Bert

Hi
My Dad was a Bert as well. He worked on the canal for years and
worked past his normal retirement date. He died 1999 age 92. His
boss was a guy called Eric Lansdown.
He did tell me once of an old canalside cottage there (Southall/Norwood)
that he was told to repaint. When he stripped the wallpaper off,
there were lovely original wall murals in an almost mediaeval style from
the 1700s. He
reported these so the museum could photo etc but his bosses at the
Waterways told him not to waste time, and he was told to paint over and
destroy them!! (This was in the 1960s or early 1970s) ... more >>

with regards to the now derelict cottages at Bulls Bridge, one of which
was the Toll House. There was a notice posted in the paper and on the
lamposts back in 2002 which reads as follows;-Dear Moorers.
re:Construction of the British Waterways office and operational yard.
The Works are in connection with the conversion of the Toll House to the

The land along the side of Bulls
Bridge (Paddington Arm) was once the GWR Sleeper Depot, while the
creosote works was back on the main stretch with a branch from the
railway. The former I have been led to believe was also used for the
storage of coffins during the First World War.

I could never understand why the Brentford Branch had so little

This opens up a very interesting
new thread. I have a busy day ahead, so can't elaborate now, but one
of the oldest roads in England (prehistoric) is Charville Lane, Sharvil
Lane, it ran from somewhere near Devizes, or Salisbury Plain, across the
hill betwieen Northolt & Yeading (by the old shooting range) to
north London then out towards Colchester. l'll say more when l have
the time, (in a day or so).

On some maps you can trace the line of the road Southall Charville, Hayes it has become Sharvil
I knew it was prehistoric old road but didn't know it was one of the 4
oldeat in England. It ran along the top of the ridge by the shooting
range - in prehistoric times they kept up high so they couldn't be
looked down n by an enemy. Wow, a very old route indeed.
Dorset/Amesbury/Silbury Hill - Salisbury
Plain - Sharvil - Charville around the heights of north London then off
to East Anglia perhaps its even Iron or Bronze Age Road ... more >>

Yes Yvonne, - spot on!
Prehistoric trackways ran SW - NE axis Salisbury Plain or Avebury or
Silbury Hill to Colchester or north Norfolk. Via Chilterns yes, but
also our Charville Lane, (Hayes Sharvel Lane) is also one of those.
Track along top of ridge via the shooting range is also extension like
Berkshire "Ridgeway" but as we have become more urban, there are just a
few tarces of that route left -but study of some maps shows it clearly though much is missing ... more >>

Has anyone heard of Alan Warrick -
the instrument dealer in Regina Road Southall? I was amazed to see
such an amazing shop and had a chance to talk to Mr Warrick about the
history of his business. He told me that the business was originally
founded 150 yeards ago by his great grandfather in France, then 100
years ago his grandfather opened a shop in Ealing and 47 years ago Mr
Warricks father opened
up the shop in Regina Road Southall. He also told me that the jazz
singer Cleo Laine was born in the property above the shop but I have
also read that she was from Clarence Street in Southall. This shop is
great and is certainly part of Southalls history, well worth a visit.
Also the instuments were hired from this shop for the film The Lady
killers - Was this filmed at Southall Studios?? ... more >>

I think that The Ladykillers was filmed at Ealing Studios. I was born in the house next to Southall Studios.

I've only just picked up the
thread about Bulls Bridge, as I don't have time to come onto the site
very often. We have lived in Bulls Bridge Road for over 40 years, and I
well remember Bert and Daisy Howard and a lot of other old residents who
had lived in the cottages along Bulls Bridge Road for many years. Sadly
most of them are long gone. When we first came here in the late 1960's
Fred and Jill still had
the pig farm, and when an old Victorian rubbish tip was discovered many
people came to dig for bottles and china there. Various film and TV
companies used the area a lot for filming, but more rarely now. It is
normally a very quiet spot these days, especially since British
Waterways erected posts to stop cars driving past the houses and along
the canal, which is a blessing. There were one or two fatalities when
youngsters thought they could speed along and ended up in the canal. We
still get a few "problems" from time to time - a submerged car which
means that all the rescue services are called out, or drug dealers
thinking it might be a quiet spot for them (they found out to their cost
that was a mistake!) Generally it is a quiet haven and we have always
been very happy here. ... more >>

I lived in the Toll House at
Bulls Bridge from 1957 to 1972 with my parents Betty and Jack Jude and
my brother Brian and sister Lorraine. Bert and Daisy Howard were our
neighours and I was great friends with their youngest daughter Reaca.
My dad worked for the British Waterways and often used to travel across
the canal to work in a punt.
I remember various TV shows and movies being filmed around
there. I was surprised to see the old house feature in the Uxbridge
Gazette a couple of weeks ago, I didn;t think it would still be
standing. ... more >>
