Does anyone remember Margaret Goddard who lived at the Norwood Road End
of Montague Road. She was a good friend and we lost touch after she
married someone called Chambers and moved to Hillingdon. Thanks. Pat

I think I can help you. Also
known as peggy. She grew up in Southall living on Montague rd with her
Mum, dad and brother. Her maiden name was Goddard and married Chambers.
She worked at the AEC.
In short I think you are looking for my Mum.

Pat, I have been told that Mum
had a school friend called Pat. Could this be you? She too tried to
trace you. Hoping that you see this and reply. Best wishes

Just read these answers and am
delighted to hear about Margaret. I remember her so well - even her
birthday on 14th Nov I think. Mine is on the llth and I think of her
every year. She moved to Corwell Lane I think. I live near Reading,
actually just south of the M4 at junction 11. Would love to be in touch
again. How can we do that???????? Give her my very best. Pat Walden

Pat you have made my day. I have
been checking this every day since I saw your message .... Yippee!! I
have also sent you a message using Friends Reunited. So I hope you get
it. In case they don't have your uptodate details, I'll send another.
There is so much to tell you.
I was born in Corwell lane, we then moved to flats called Avon-dale drive in Hase, which I believe are no longer there, before we all settled in Somerset with Dads work.
Your message has given me and my family such a lift. I hope we can find a
way of making direct contact. All the very best of wishes and kind

AEC Routemaster production

Further to a comment put by Pauline Sykes. l have tried to establish
for how long Routemasters were built at the AEC Southall factory.
There is an amazing link full off information about each London bus
class including ALL the AEC types such as RT, T and of course the RM
Google "Ian's Bus Stop" for further info.
From this it would seem the prototype RM was built as early as 1954,
with full production running from the late 50's to about 1968. The end
of RM production was the death of AEC when the Greater London Council
then chose Leyland and other makers. We then had unsuitable and
unservicable buses in Lonon, but by the time the mistake was realised,
it was too late and our beloved AEC had gone. ... more >>

I belive Routemaster buses
owed some design to the Halifax Bomber of WW11 sub assembles
of this aircraft were built at Chiswick works, the bus haveing
a body/chassis structure all of aluminum.

We were so lucky

We saw the "best of the last" West London was still rural until the
late '50s. l remember that when you went beyond Greenford, it was
countryside with horses in fields. Yeading was surrounded by fields
on all sides. You could still see signs of how rural it all must have
been before the 39-45 war. Children always played in safety and it
was a wonderful place to be brought up. Now it
is just becoming a tip. The old families are gone, the industries are
gone and the character has all been ripped out. Yeading was known as
gypsy country because their thoroughfares were the Grand Union Canal and
the A40, and centered around the Willow Tree at Yeading. Oh, l
long for those days to come back. But there is no hope of that. So
be glad you experienced "the good". l wouldn't want to be a child
today - not even allowed to travel to school unaccompanied. What has
happened to us?? ... more >>

I could not agree more, if you
scrol down a few pages you'll see I made the point that Southall is a
festering dump, despite the liberal elite's dressing it up as a
'Multicultural heaven' it is not. It has no soul, no character and no
heart.
Yes I too remember how nice it was to live and work in the area in the
50's and 60's, we left doors and windows open on hot nights and days,
your neighbours looked out for you, now you are lucky if your neighbours speak the same language.
Yes I miss the Southall I was born in and I cherish the memories hence
since my dad passed away I have no ties to Southall and do not wish to
visit to see the permenant damage that has been done.
Love and cherish your memories because that is all Southall is now ... more >>

Two things:
l was told arms on Hanwell viaduct are those NOT of Queen but of Lord
Wharnecliffe who it is supposed to be named after. It was queen
Victoria who got trains stopped to look at the view. FIRST Royal
across was Queen ADELAIDE who was widow of a previous king who was still
alive when railway was built - she was considered "expendible" if train
went too fast.
2 Ruislip Road East used
to flood a lot - about every 2 years some 55 bus had to break journey
and go via Uxbridge Road & Greenford Road whereas others had to
turnaround in Greenford Ave by Brentside School
Also a riverside pub full of people got a direct hit by bomb or rocket
Greenford - Ruislip Road Bridge just on the Hanwell side of the river.
We were always told not to play there as kids. Pub may have been
called "the load of Hay" Remains of pub sign were still standing by
the Ruislip Road bridge into the 70's when l left. ... more >>

Barge horses

I spent a great deal of my summer holidays travelling up and down the
canal on the barges. Mooring at Hanwell locks and then stabling the
horses. I used to ride them bare back to the stable. They were
wonderful creatures. If ever the tow rope broke no matter where the
horse was on his journey he would head for the stable at full gallop.
We'd have to go and fetch them back.
- Re: Barge horses
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 22-Oct-2009
The only stables were at Brenford
Dock. Only narrow boats went north beyond Hayes and the "Slough cut"
was impenetrable with weeds by the '50s. If you had used the word
"marina" in those days, you would have been sent to St. Bernards for a
check up

Bulls Bridge stables had gone by
the late '50s and was only the maintenance depot Around 1960, the
Brentford stables become a tractor shed overnight. The gorgeous horses
all disappeared and were replaced by nasty, smelly, noisy little light
blue 2-stroke motorised carts- predecessors of the beach buggy.

Hanwell locks was actually called
"Hanwell Flight" because there are so many locks confined together.
They are all numbered, and No 1 is l think up in Birmingham, then they
work south. The Hanwell Flight are all in the 90s and Brentford is
100. I think, but not sure, 101 is where the canal enters the Thames
at Brentford dock

Hi Ronald, welcome to the site.
When I was very young (about five in 1936) I lived in Bankside at the
far end, not near the Uxbridge road. I used to hear the barges chugging
away at night carrying their cargo, and in the daytime saw the
magnificent Shire horses pulling the barges along. There was a bridge
not far from our house, and I can remember seeing a man pushing his legs
against the brick wall
underneath the bridge, probably as the towpath was too narrow for the
horse. I think the horse was taken out of its harness at that time. Is
that what was happening, as I can't remember all of it? ... more >>

I worked at Woolies in the mid
80s. No counters then, but I remember when there were. M&S was the
same. I much prefered it that way. Also in the 60s Woolies had a snack
bar right at the back of the store. My friend June and I used to go in
with our prams after we had done our shopping to have a nice cup of
tea.Happy days.
I went to work at Woolies because I wanted a part-time stress free job. Some hopes!

I also used to travel up and down
the Grand Union Canal with the barges when I was a kid. I remember the
transition from the shire horses (lovely smell, horse brasses, feed
bags, steam, puffing, blowing, straining dripping cable) to the nasty
blue tractors. One day they took all the horses up to Balls Bridge
Depot, and shot the lot.

Thanks for trying Yvonne. Cecil
Hillier was only the second biggest pike winner of the week - he was
beaten by 2 ozs! When my brother-in-law heard about this, he thought it
was dreadful to catch that poor Pike and not put it back into the water

lt is great that people are using this board. The Knowhere Ealing
board has only had 3 messages posted on it during the whole of this
year!!
How lucky those born before the early '50's were living in what was one
of the lungs of west London. WE may not have had much then, but l bet
we were happier then than the kids being brought up today are.

Hi I am a new member to this
board and I have enjoyed every entry I've read over the last couple of
days. I was born and raised at 2 Heathway, the Common Southall. So
many of your memories are mine too. The Doodlbug stopped over our
garden, the icecream man was probably my brother Jack , who was later
killed in Libya.
must go now but I shall be back! Ron Gollop

Keith-a few years back I looked
at the sites of other towns neighbouring Southall, and they are likewise
not very active. I have just looked up the site for where I live now
(Harpenden, Herts) and there are just 69 entries-the last in December

- Re: WONDERFUL

Michael, l was a Hanwell boy, but
most people have never heard of the place. But unusually, i did go to
Southall a lot, as my Dad worked on the canal twixt Brentford docks,
Norwood "Top Lock" and Bull's Bridge canal basin. I remeber the last
barge horses. GORGEOUS animals.
"Southall" seems to be one of the few active 'Knowhere' sites. Am amazed to find there have been no Ealing entries for
over 6 weeks. Many of the entries that are there are from people
trying to flog stuff or are trying to flog Russian women by the hour,
etc..... ... more >>

l was at Drayton Manor a mixed
grammar. There were several Southall pupils in the intake - it was a
good grammar school with a wide catchment area. Even a couple from
Hayes every year - pupils were expected to walk to/from Hanwell station.
But there were several other schools too in Hanwell -mostly unisex. Do you know which school the Iranian girl went to??

Keiths references to the grand union canal brings back some memories. My
dad was a keen angler.Just before the war broke out, we found the
branch which I think went to Quaker Oats. There was land on the opposite
bank to the tow path, which was a great place to fish. Surprisingly, we
caught a lot of Bleak, a fish usually found only in rivers.

All these messages about Norwood
Green, have suddenly brought back a memory to me. I was at Southall
Junior Technical College 1942-1945. One of our senior masters was a Mr
Manders. He lived in Tentelow Lane, not far from where it joins Norwood
Green, on the left hand side going in the Norwood Green direction. He
had a large house, and a very large garden, with three large
greenhouses. He also had chickens,
ducks, and a large aggresive Gander. He recuited some of us to help in
the garden, for which we were paid 1/3d an hour. When a V1 fell nearby,
it shattered the green houses, and I remember helping with the
re-glazing. Mrs Manders gave us scrumptious teas!

Hi Michael;- very interesting
about Mr. Manders, After leaving the Scouts in Hayes I joined the St.
John Ambulance Brigade 55 Div. Southall, think in Featherstone Road or
nearby. Thia would have been late 50's early 60's anyway our Instructor
was a Mr. Manders, don't know where he lived. Our classes were always on
a Friday evening and I know I was there when the news came in that John
F. Kennedy had been
shot. I spent quite some time at St. John's completing my First Aid
courses/camping/cooking/mapreading and even basic firefighting at
Southall Fire Station, I know Mr. Manders was there all that time.

southall bus garage
|
by Yvonne Butler (Member 10237916) on 6-Oct-2009
|
The LGOC and the tramway systems had quite a few examples of a bus
garage and a tram depot in the same area, sharing the same name. This
was not a problem when they were in different administrative set-ups.
When London Transport combined the formerly separate departments
(Central Buses and Trams & Trolleybuses) into one organisation
(Central Road Services) in 1950, just before the beginning of
the South London tram conversion scheme, one of each pair was renamed.
Hanwell garage was renamed Southall on 12th July 1950.
Hanwell trolleybus depot was right in the centre of Hanwell, so that
stayed the same and the bus garage became Southall, although its HW code
was unaltered.
Hanwell bus garage was actually in the borough of Southall, although
much nearer to the centre of Hanwell, and also almost opposite the well
known Hanwell hospital. Southall garage was opened as Hanwell garage on
18th March 1925 and at that time all the routes emanated from Central
London. Some routes went on to Southall 'town centre' but a lot
terminated at Hanwell and then used the garage to turn round having
previously turned at Hanwell Broadway. Having the name Hanwell at the
time was less confusing for passengers on buses terminating there. If
Southall Garage had been displayed it might have implied that the bus
served the centre of Southall which is still some distance away. Before
the garage opened, the 247 bus route from the Greenford direction
terminated at the 'iron bridge' just west of the garage and
interestingly even this terminus was described in contemporary listings
as Hanwell (G.W.R. Railway Bridge

I was trying to get a picture in
my mind of Hanwell Broadway, Keith. I can remember very clearly the
wonderful Wharncliffe Viaduct over the River Brent, and the Hanwell
Kensington & Chelsea cemetery, where my grandparents are buried.
Also the landmark of the clock in the middle and Boston Manor road
opposite, where we got the bus to Kew Gardens. I remember the bus
garage, but I can't say I ever shopped
in Hanwell Broadway, as I usually took my two younger sisters to West
Ealing where we ended up having a drink and probably a sticky bun in
Lyons (I think). Was Hanwell Broadway a busy shopping centre?

- Re: southall bus garage
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 26-Oct-2009
No, there was never a Lyons in
West Ealing. But in the 50's West Ealing was the major shopping
centre. It gradually declined as Ealing Broadway got more prominent.
Hanwell Broadway was nothing other than local shops (one man bands) but
there were lots of them. The 607 trolleybus from Southall was the
artery all along the Uxbridge road to Shepherds Bush, but there was
another minor trolleybus
route (from Hanwell depot) and that was the 655 which did go to Kew
Bridge via Brentford, you would have had to walkacros the bridge to get
to Kew Gardens. Alternatively you could have got a 65 bus to Kew
Gardens from Ealing Broadway, (and still can!!) ... more >>

It was F H ROWSE in West Ealing.
West Ealing declined to Ealing Broadway's benefit after about 1956,
year by year, bit by bit. Rowse's was a great big store almost the
size of Bentalls, but being in West Ealing became the "kiss of death" to
that sort of retail outlet.
l now see "Ye Olde Hanwell Stores" right by Hanwell (art deco) clock tower, have been pulled down to become an ugly glass building. How did they get away with that planning monstrosity? I'm so glad l live in Sussex now. ... more >>

- Re: southall bus garage

l THINK it was Rowse's that was
the last one to have the money in little metal containers flying along
the ceiling on wires, but that actually may just have been Daniels.
Between Ealing Bdy and West Ealing shops there was a bit of a void with
Fire Station, a couple of pubs ("Thw Old Hat") and some late vicorian
houses. All gone now l expect. By the green area opposite Lido was
Shellshear's Sports
shop. All replaced by plastic retail groups staffed by plastic
people. West Ealing and Hanwell were major centres in their day -
Ealing Bdy only took over bcause the electric railways decided to start
their journeys from there. When the Great Western Railway was first
built, West Ealing was the more important station. Southall was then a
very important market town (much more important than Hayes, Hillingdon
or Uxbridge which have only really developed in the last 50 years) ... more >>

I'm sure in Rowse's West Ealing

back here, think we bought one of our first prams from Daniels. Saw a
lady we know the other day amd she has the most beutiful pink coachbuilt
Sivercross pram for her 1st grandaughter, paid £1300 for it!. As for
Measles etc,. yes had the lot including mumps and chickenpox. Remember
Measles well, was virtually isolated in the front room for two weeks
with nan pulling the
curtains, the light seemed to be too much. Completely differnt nowadays,
on several occasions our daughter has taken our grandaughter to school
and there are mothers bringing their children to school with younger
ones in the pushchair covered in spots, they don't seem to bother
isolating them now.

Yes, Green shop front with
Williams Brothers in big white letters. They were the last shop I

sheet aluminium or tin, different shapes for different values

Williams Bros in Southall ?? -
Yes in South Road. My husband actually worked there for a while.
Hardware one side groceries & provisions the other. We had to pay
at a little hatch type window at the end of the grocery store; and
received 'tin' money back to be spent at a later date.

There was indeed a Williams Bros
in Southall-two adjacent shops, one a grocers and the other a hardware
shop. It was on the right hand side of South Road if you were looking
towards the station. In my boyhood, the manager of the grocers was a Mr
Hopkins.

I also had the usual run of
measles, mumps and chicken pox and scarlet fever twice (they thought the
2nd time it was diphtheria). The worst for me, however, was impetigo,
which my brother brought in. I had it all in my hair and had to have all
my hair cut off. Weeks off school, and that ghastly gentian violet
plastered
everywhere. Wearing a pixie hat didn't help either, it made it itch more. Thanks for today's modern medicine.

Thinking about Lyons, I think
there was one right opposite where I worked in an Insurance company, in
the middle of Ealing Broadway. I seem to remember large gold letters on
the front. My friend and I (both 15) used to look across from our
upstairs window to some Danish students doing business studies in
Ealing, who used to wave at us! Another eating place, almost opposite
Ealing Broadway station, probably was the ABC. Wasn't as posh as Lyons, as that's where we used to have lunch occasionally. Anyone remember? ... more >>

ABC stood for Aereated Bread
Company. They had a shop/bakery almost opposite Ealing Broadway

directions. There were offices above the bakery/resaurant. lt was

Interesting to note that Alexis
Korner's Blues Incorporated (The Ealing Club) performed in a basement
below the ABC teashop opposite Ealing Broadway station on a Saturday
night. It was a Trad Jazz Venue and Korner and Cyril Davies put on their

frequent the club and went on to become some of the biggest pop culture
icons of the generation.

Blues Incorporated! ... more >>

Appropriate for this thread to be on "Southall Bus Garage" because...........
l have a photo in a book. The photo is dated about 1954 and it shows a
GREEN RT type bus on route 97. When they were first out, there was a
shortage of red RT's so a few green ones were lent to Southall garage
for a few weeks and were only allowed to work on route 97 which ran
exclusively from HW Southall Garage.
They were confined to the 97 as it was the most rural of Southall's
routes - it ran out to Ruilip and in those days, there was nothing much
beyond the Civil Engineer - it was mostly rural. So l have this photo
(in a book) showing a green 97 at a NORTHBOUND bus stop outside the ABC
in Ealing Broadway, opposite the mainline station (the District Line
station was further along towards Haven Green), as it was then a two way
road ... more >>

Len, your mention of the "Forum"
cinema in Ealing Broadway really took me back. We always used to go
there when a big film was being shown. Evidently, it was built in 1934
and was Ealing's last cinema to be built in that period, and is the only
one to survive. It is currently under refurbishment, with a re-opening
scheduled in 2010. I remember we were in the cinema one evening when the
usherette accidentally
missed her footing in the dark, just near to where we were sitting, and
all the ice cream tubs went cascading down the stairs. She wasn't hurt,
but we had a job to stop laughing! ... more >>

along, what were the EMI Offices are I think sheltered housing of a
type. While right opposite the Blue Anchor used to stand a row of old
cottages, which when I were a lad in the early 50's were derelict, we
used to muck about in them. Across the bridge on the right was Clayton
Road School. Used to play
all along the canal, my uncle worked for Horsley Smiths timber who had a
wharf opposite the Woolpack, used to love watching the horses pulling
the barges, and there was Wakefields (Castrol), Harrisons the printers

Back to Southall, could Len or
anyone else help me out with something, I had an uncle who for many
years worked at Victoria Sawmills up near Woolfs Rubber Factory. The
story we heard of how he met his wife was that he was living in digs in
Southall and was injured (slighty concused) during a bombing in the
vicinity of either the Dominion or the Manor House his future wife was
the ambulance driver who
attended the incident. Any ideas when this was, if indeed the story is
true. They later bought a house in Rectory Rd/Ave down the bottom of
Havelock Rd. ... more >>

Hi Len & co.;-The Hole in the
Wall green grocers was on the west side of Station Rd just along from
the main P.O. Incidently my dad was a greengrocer for many years mainly
with Gerrards but in the late 50's early 60's was manager of Alex
greengrocers in Coldharbour Lane near the pet shop. I used to help out
there after school on Friday night and all day Saturday, mainly tearing
up newspaper and hanging on the hooks for wrapping or out the back boiling beetroot, for this I used to get the princely sum of 15/-
With regards to the pet shop it was run by two sisters Ruby and Sis,
Ruby was a large portly lady and they lived in the White House which
stood on the Lamb Bridge in front of the RSPCA. ... more >>

they owned the pet shop in Coldharbour Lane . Just looked in an old

We had our wedding photographs
done by Frank Barry in Hayes, and our wedding cars by someone else in
the town (can't remember the name). I can see whereabouts the
Photographer's shop was, but numbers don't mean anything. It was on the
same side as the Post Office, but further up the road. Maybe opposite
the Regent Theatre? There was another little road in between where the
Library was and a little
park where we used to have our lunch sometimes. There was also a nice
little cake shop there as well. When I just had a look at my wedding
album, (which hasn't seen the light of day for ages), I'd forgotten
about the telegrams in there. Did the telegraph boys come directly from
the Post Office, Len? ... more >>
- Re: southall bus garage
by barry raymond (Member 10239180) on 5-Nov-2009
Hi Pauline;-
The Post Office was in Station Road, opposite Wollies, if you went back
towards and past the Regent, thats where Station Rd ends. You then have
Botwell Lane to the left, and Pump Lane on the right, the continuing
road then becomes Coldharbour Lane, Frank Barry was lets say about 500
yards or so down on the left. If you come back to the beginning of
Botwell Lane along here was the Bowling
Green which is still there behind which was the Rec, most of which is
now being redeveloped for the new Leisure centre. at the beginning of
Central Ave is the Swimming Poll, not been up many years but this used
to be Botwell Green, used to have fairs on there. The pool is coming
down soon, hence the new centre across the road. The library, which is
still there is just a little further along in Golden Crescent. ... more >>

Thanks Barry. It took me a while
to sort it out in my head, but it was Botwell Lane where we used to make
for in our lunch hours at times, and it must have been the Bowling
Green where we used to sit. There was a small group of shops on the
right hand side, one of which was a cake shop! I only lived in Hayes for
two years, and Southall is the place where I have the clearest
memories. A lovely little town, and this site has helped all of us to remember what we might have forgotten all those years ago. ... more >>

Hi Yvonne;-There were two cinemas
on the Uxbridge Rd. one the Essoldo just along from Shakespeare Ave,
saw all the first JamesBond films there, later became Bingo Hall,
Waitrose was later next door. The other cinema was the Corinth between

I was thinking back to when we
were younger and wanted to see a film at the local 'pictures' as we
called them. If there was an 'A' film on accompanying the 'U' we
wouldn't be allowed in without an adult as we were under age. What we
all used to do was to ask someone to take us in. It was always a couple,
and never anyone on their own. We gave them our money for the tickets
and once inside we would
sit somewhere else. We didn't ever go on our own - always two of us.
This just wouldn't happen today, as it is very risky, but we were all
street-wise, and never came to any harm. Some couples, however wouldn't
take us in. ... more >>

Reading Pauline's memories of U
and A certificates at the cinema I believe there was also an X cert. My
friend and I were desperate to see The House of Wax showing at the old
Gem (the fleapit) She borrowed? some of her mums lippy and rouge and we
made up in the telephone kiosk at the top of our road.I think we were
probably about 15 at the time.I was shaking in my shoes when she asked
for the tickets because
she was tall and looked older and I was tiny.We got in anyway and

Same friend and I wanted to see "The Robe" which was showing at the
Granada Greenford but we didn't have quite enough money even for the
cheap seats. Scurried round trying to find any of our mums empty

enough in the end although we had to walk there and back.

Dilys - we were the same as you -
always looking for ways to get the extra money together for the flicks.
A great aunt of ours had left a load of old books to us, and we used to
beg my mum to let us take a few up to John's the bookshop to sell!
Also, looking down the back of the settee to see if any coins might have
dropped down there. Happy days!

Going back to the 'pictures'.
According to my brother it was quite exciting when they 'bunked in'. If
you are not familiar with this term, it means getting in without paying.
Sometimes it was possible to squeeze in unnoticed at the end of a
programme, but on other occasions four or five of them would pool their
coppers together to raise the price of one ticket and open the exit
doors quietly to let the
rest in. One time they talked a very small boy into climbing through
the exit window, which was always open, and again opening the door to
let the others in. However, the ushers had got wind of this when halfway
through the window the boy shouted "pull me back!" A tug of war then
went on with the ushers pulling him one way and the boys outside pulling
him the other way. In the end, the ushers won and the boy was given a
clip round the ear - never to repeat the experience again. Sometimes the
ushers would shine their torch along a row to ask to see your ticket,
and if you didn't have one you were in trouble. They overcame this, by
picking up a ticket someone else had dropped! ... more >>

There was a guy who used to cycle
around the streets of Hanwell. He was known as "the School Board Man"
and his job was purely to see if there were any kids out in the street
during term time. He may have been employed by the Borough of Ealing
and might have had more of the borough to cover than just Hanwell.
Quite a heavy man so the cycling probably did him good.

being born in Hayes we used to go Saturday morning pictures at the

Shop' also in East Ave, get a few 1/2d shrimps and blackjacks or flying
saucers, 9d to go in the pictures and still have change from half a
crown. They used to have
singalongs with the words coming up on thescreen, usually Robin Hood or
Davy Crockett. On several occasions there were visits from Coco the
clown from Bertram Mills Circus, he used to give road safety instruction
and had a walking stick in the shape ofa belisha beacon, he was an

No you are right Dilys, we did seem happier then not so stresfull like
nowadays. Although as you rightly say things were harder, not the
luxuries like the kids today take for granted. Would not say we were
poor, but even in the early 50's some things were still rationed. I
rememember mum getting Fussels condensed milk, watering it down to make a
jug full. Don't think we ever had butter always margerine.
No fitted carpets, just lino with slip mats, no central heating,
sometimes it was so cold you could scrape the ice off the inside of the
widows with your nails, coats ontop of the bed. When you got up in the
morning the house was freezing until mum cleaned out the grate and lit
the fire. Won't mention the chilblains. ... more >>

My brother and I used to go
regularly to the Odeon in Southall on a Saturday morning. One morning
they showed a film - I believe it was called "The Ugly Duckling". There
was a competition after the film for two different age groups to write a
story about the film. We both wrote one, and sent them in. My brother,
who was seven, won the first prize in his age group, and had to walk on
to the stage to collect
his prize - the handsome sum of 7/6d. He was over the moon as that was a
small fortune in those days (1943). He invested the money in a real
Waterman's pen which he cherished. ... more >>

Hi Keith;-
It seems you are two years older than me, your talk of cowboy outfits is
sure bringing back the memories. Back in the 50's in Hayes there was
always the Irish Fair at Botwell Church, usually about June, you had to
pay to enter. Anyway one particular year was a western theme and if
children went dressed as either a cowboy or indian they got in free. I
had my cherished Davy Crockett outfit,
you know the type, brown leggings and jacket with tassles and racoon
hat. I had somehow managed to split the seam of the pants but being
determined to go thought I can mend this myself, and mum being out
shopping rumaged through her needlework box for a needle and thread.
Went on great guns until I picked them up and realised I had sewn them
to the tablecloth ! And yes we too had the cap pistols, the caps used to
come in a small round box, can still remember the smell, used to drive
mum mad. ... more >>

Barry yes, l rememember there was
a bit of a Davy Crockett fad in the mid 50's due to a song or film.

What memories eh Keith, didn't
need computers or game stations then did we. On the mention of cap
pistols, do you remember the small 'rocket bombs' you could get, they
were weighted at the tip, put couple of caps in the end and drop them.
What about all the other 'toy' which are deemed dangerous nowadays like
pea shooters catapaults and the dreaded stink bombs, the favourite was
on the top deck of the bus ! I don't think you can even buy marbles nowadays, too dangerous. ... more >>

Chris - tip I copied from the
Daily Mail as I am a bird lover with the occasional squirrel. RSPB said
add chilli powder to the seed mix or nuts. Don't hide the chilli but put
it in a bag with the mix or nuts and shake it up. Apparently, it
doesn't affect the birds at all. You can also use curry powder, tabasco,
red pepper and cayenne pepper if you haven't any chilli powder.
Make sure the seed mix or nuts are thoroughly coated. Good luck! ... more >>

For those of you who knew Gerry Cakebread, I am very saddened to tell
you that I have just heard that he passed away on 16th September, at his
home in Taunton.
Gerry was a lovely guy, and a very talented goalkeeper, though very
modest about his abilities. He went to Southall Grammar circa
1947-1953, and played for Brentford for a number of years.
Sorry, but I don't have any more details.

Hi Pat,
The SGS was "migrated" to Multiply, from MSN (not by our choice), but,
unfortunately the members were not migrated with the site, so,
unfortunately, to all intents and purposes, the site is "dead".
However, I think that there have been a number of "spin-offs" with mini reunions of different age groups.
Rosalie (Perry, as was), and subsequently John Harman organises an annual lunch for our year.
If you want any more details, let me know.

Sept.3rd 1939. When the siren started, a lady fainted on the green between our house and The Plough in North Road

As I've mentioned before on this
site I was 8yrs old in the Municipal Sports ground in the playground
with my brother, 6 and a half. When the siren sounded all the children
ran home and some parents came to fetch them as well. My brother would
not come off the slide and my father eventually came running over to get
us. When we got indoors all the curtains were closed, and we sensed the
danger as children.

So today we get to the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of WW2. Those
of us that lived in Southall will be thinking of people they knew who
were killed in air raids, as well as relatives killed in action. I know
of two people who lost older brothers. Some, such as Len Goddard saw
active service themselves.
Let us not forget

The Hanwell Bus Depot was in the Hanwell high street and was as I

Nussbaum who had a surgery in Somerset Road and wondered if you, or
anyone else, might know when he died. He was our family doctor from
around 1939/40 and I last saw him in 1960 shortly before I left
Southall. I was born in Trinity Road, lived Palgrave Avenue, Faraday
Road and Northcote Avenue. Does anyone remember Vine House in Park View
Road when it was a Rest Centre
for homeless families. Our family lived there for nearly a year with 10
other families: Stark and Laird were two of them. Those who have been
back to Southall know what it's like now and those who haven't been

Was Dr Nussbaum* the successor to Dr Ginsberg?
Our family doctor was Dr McKenna, with a practice in South Road. Our
nearest doctor was Dr Olive, a lady doctor in North Road, with a practice
in a large Georgian house.
The large practice where I now attend is very girlie i.e a majority of women, and very good they are.

As my entry on Dr Ginsberg is
still showing, I would like to say one last thing about him. When my
brother was born, he had a blockage of the main intestine, which meant
that he couldn't hold milk down in any quantity, so my mother had to
feed him with a fountain pen bladder, drop by drop. Dr Ginsberg said
that this condition had to be corrected urgently, so he authorised an
operation at six weeks
old at Great Ormond Street hospital. This was successful. Soon after,
he contracted pnuemonia, and once again Dr Ginsberg supplied the
necessary oxygen, which my parents couldn't afford. (They did pay him
later however). So with thanks to Dr Ginsberg we were blessed with a
wonderful brother. ... more >>

Many years ago on a beautiful
summer's day when I was about ten, I took my youngest brother for a walk
along the towpath of the canal. We walked for several miles, and
eventually came off on to the road. We carried on walking and then
decided we'd better get a bus home. We asked the conductor if it went to
Southall and he said it did. However, I began to get very worried as I
didn't recognise any of
the places we passed, and by this time it was really dark. The bus
finally stopped at South Harrow, and the conductor wrongly thought this
was where we wanted. I started to cry as we didn't have enough money
left to get home. Two lady passengers took pity on us and gave us some
small change and showed us where the bus stop was to Southall. However,
when the bus got to Hanwell garage it was the last bus, and there wasn't
another one to the broadway, so we had to walk. When we got to the Iron
Bridge a man was walking with his dog and he said "Whatever are you two
children doing out at this time of night, it's midnight." We hid the
money we had left at the top of Dormers Wells by an old iron pump, as we
knew my father would be cross. When we got home my mother gave us some
supper and told us to get up to bed fast as my father and brother were
out looking for us. We later found out the next morning that my father
had tripped over a towrope on the towpath, and my brother caught him
otherwise he would have ended up in the canal and he couldn't swim! So,
Hanwell Garage certainly has some memories for me. ... more >>

The thought of evacuees in WW2,
reminds me that we also had refugees in Southall-largely I think from
Belgium. We had a couple of young men with us, and when they moved on
one middle-aged gentleman, who was the Belgian Liason officer in
Southall. We went to some of their social gatherings at Shackleton Hall.

Still on the subject of evacuees,
I thought some of my brother's accounts might be of interest "We all
assembled and departed from Southall County School, and at the time it
seemed like a big picnic. People scurrying around with bags and
suitcases, coaches waiting for their young passengers aged between seven
and nine, all giggling and laughing. We all had gas masks in their
boxes around our necks,
and a lunch-bag or box. Then, goodbyes from the tearful parents, waving
their farewells from the roadside. The coach, however, was full of
laughter and activity as many of the kids aboard knew one another, and
were skylarking around. It wasn't many miles however, before we
realised our parents weren't aboard, and it slowly began to sink in what
was happening, and the tears began to flow. The adults aboard were
prepared for this, and after a few more miles had pacified their motley
crew for the journey ahead. After leaving King's Cross, we were bound
for Yorkshire, and I was boarded with a family in Heckmondwike. Although
I had many experiences there, the most pleasant memory of evacuation
was the Smithy. It was the ringing of the hammer on the anvil that first
caught my attention, as the Smithy's was only a hundred yards or so
from the house. I stared in wonder at all the intriguing tools and
equipment around the shop, and across the room in full flow...the forge!
The Smithy was beating a length of red hot metal on the anvil. He beat
the metal two or three hard blows, and then tapped the anvil lightly a
couple of times before repeating the hard blows. It was then I saw the
leather bellows on the far side of the forge, which he pumped several
times making the coke glow almost white hot. This process was repeated
several times until he finally dipped the glowing metal into a trough of
water, making a loud gurgling and hissing. My first experience was of
the re-shoeing of a horse. The blacksmith would first remove the old
shoe and clean the hoof thoroughly, before selecting a 'shoe blank' from
the many different sizes that were hanging on the wall. He didn't
simply nail the new shoe on however. It was first offered to the hoof,
scrutinised carefully, and then taken across to the forge to be heated
and adjusted on the anvil. While it was still hot, he then placed it
exactly where it would be fitted on the hoof, giving off a cloud of
acrid smelling yellow smoke.. It was then submersed in water to cool it
and finally nailed to the hoof in the imprint that the hot ... more >>

Sorry folks - I ran out of steam. The rest is....
that the hot shoe had made previously . The final touch was to file down
any rough edges, and after repeating this procedure for each hoof, the
horse went away with its new shoes. The Smithy said "When your mum buys
you a pair of shoes, you get two shoes the same size. When I shoe a
horse, each shoe is shaped individually to suit the hoof." This is a memory I will never forget... I would have loved to have been a blacksmith! ... more >>

Yvonne, in one of your entries in
the '1960's' you mentioned how lovely it was now to walk along the
Grand Union canal from Spikes Bridge to where Taylor Woodrow offices
used to be. When my brother and I walked along the canal footpath that
day many years ago and finally ended up at South Harrow on the bus, I've
never really been able to find out where exactly we came off the canal.

To Len and anybody else who
remembers Dr.Nussbaum: My mother told me he was an Austrian Jew who had
fled his country with wife and daughter due to the pogroms at the time
of WW2 - a Heart Specialist whose qualifications meant nothing much in
the UK at that time. The waiting room was in the downstairs front room, a
table in the centre with dining chairs all around the walls, walk in
and count the people
before you so you would know when it was your turn to see the doctor.
His surgery was in the back room with a small lean-to conservatory off
it and he'd disappear into it for a while before emerging with a bottle
of something or other to cure all ills in the days before antibiotics
and other wonder drugs that are available today on prescription. I last
saw Dr. Nussbaum (our family always pronounced it Nozborn!) in 1962. ... more >>

No, He wasn't "called Eldorado". Eldorado was a brand name, just like Wall's or Lyons.
But it was better than those two so because of their combined power
Wall's and Lyons conspired to put Eldorado out of business. Eldorado
was the best ice-cream there was. Most of their retailing was via men

frightened to stock it - their supply of Walls and Lyons products would

FOR LEN GODDARD
Southall Garage was INITIALLY called Hanwell garage so that people
coming from the east along the Uxbridge Road wouldn't think the bus went
as far as Southall town centre (because it obviously didn't). Hanwell
was called Hanwell Depot, which later led to confusion within L.T.
having two garages with the same name (but different codes - HW &
HL) so the one nearest to Southall eventually got re-named but kept the original HW code. ... more >>

Hi Pauline;-Were you a Hayes
person? at any time.Yes the Hayes News, I have an aunt in Australia, the
only one left now in my older generation. She emigrated in 1949 just
before I was born, she's been back a couple of times. Anyway an uncle of
mine used to send her monthly bundles of the Hayes News right up until
he died. Who knows perhaps she still has them ! will have to write to
her, she is 90 next year. Pauline there was also the Hayes Chronicle.
While I'm on here you all seem to have good memories, can anyone put a
date to the huge fire at James Davis Timber yard on the canal opposite
the T.A. Centre. I think perhaps 1962/63 I remember walking there with
school pals to watch, never seen anything like it, even the barges were

Hi Barrie again. Yes, I did live
in Hayes for a couple of years in 1954/6 in Clement Gdns, near "The
Western", after I married. I worked at EMI for several years at Head
Office. The Hayes news was delivered to us in Northcote Avenue, and I
actually wrote to a chap for a while until I met my husband! Happy days.
- Re: evacuees
by barry raymond (Member 10239180) on 22-Oct-2009
Hi again Pauline;-I think the old
EMI office building has now been turned into some kind of sheltered
housing. Remember the gate which used to be on the bridge near the
'Anchor' before they widened the bridge, only used to open it at the
beginning and end of shift.hundreds of people on bikes. Loads of my
family and branches worked there. i.e.Sceeny/Peggrem etc,. as well as
Harrisons the other side
of the bridge. In later years my dad was MC at the Social club in
Printing House Lane, (he worked for EMI Ministry of Defence in
Springfield Road) and my late sister and her husband worked for EMI
Records on the Uxbridge Road up until it closed. ... more >>

Hi again Barry. You brought back a
lot of memories about all the workers charging out at the end of their
shifts walking (or running) and on bikes! My husband also worked at EMI
as a toolmaker, plus his brother and sister. In fact his sister was in
the air-raid shelter on that fateful day in July 1944 when a doodlebug
hit the shelter killing and injuring many people. Her mate, who was due
to be married, was
killed and was buried in her wedding dress. The EMI dances were held at
Ealing Town Hall. We had some lovely times there. ... more >>

Hi Pauline;-
re:Your mention of the V1 hitting the EMI shelter
My grandfather worked for the council and was in the CD Heavey rescue
unit that attended that incident. He had served in Salonika during WW1
but what he witnessed that day stayed with him forever. The memorial to
those who were killed is as you know in Cherry Lane cemetery.
- Re: evacuees
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 23-Oct-2009
Yes Barry, Cherry Lane also
brought back some more memories. We used to have some lovely walks all
around that area before the motorway was built. Cranford Park or Woods
was another beauty spot. We were told that there was an underground
passage in the Park somewhere which had been there for many, many years,
but never found out if it was true.

I remember the day when the V1 fell on the air raid shelter at EMI. I
was than at Southal Junior Technical College, and we were down the air
raid shelters. We heard the big crump when the V1 fell.
Looking out of the shelter a big cloud of dust and smoke was rising. We learnt the dreadful truth before the end of the day
- Re: evacuees

Hi again Pauline;-I have masses
of archives on Cranford, wrote my first book back in 1998 on the area,
Berkeley family etc,. The Manor of Cranford A Brief History. I don't
know if your local but most libraries in Hillingdon and Hounslow have
copies. With regards to the tunnels, the house itself was pulled down in
1945, but the Cellars still remain, (not open to the public), if you
are interested Icould
send you a couple of photos I took back in 98 or I could send them via
Yvonne if you are in touch with her. There is a small tunnel leading off
to the 'HA Ha' (walled garden), and there has always been talk of a
tunnel leading across the park to the Red House in Cranford Lane, one
time home of Moreton Berkely, which was demolished last year. Personally

touch with various bus links such as "Ian's bus page" & "Dick
Gilbert" . Bill Cottrell (now unfortunately deceased( was a founder

Hi all, have wracked the brains and have come up with the following
names that i can remember, if i had a street layout, i could place the
names with which house they lived at, but dont fancy visiting Southall
again. Anyway here goes.
Hills lived at 163. Clarkes lived next door at 165 Bill,Rose, sons Alan,
Mickey, daughter June and Barbara, and twin boys?. Next door 161 Mr. and
Mrs Johnson, daughter
Jan and son Roy. Next to them were the Hammonds. Few doors away Mr. and
Mrs Roach, son Kevin. Then there were the Wheeler family. Moving up to
the Broadway. The Carters. The Ive's. The Dobsons. George Rockley. Best
friend Gerald Dale lived at no 3? Next to the Clarkes were Joe Farance?
and wife? Kathy still lives there. Used to take their dog for walks over
the park. Another Friend was John Findlater, he lived in Carlyle
Gardens. Phew!! Across the road opposite were, Joan and Norman
Brookes, and ? Willans children David and Suzanne, Frank and Sheila? they
moved to Hayes End, their children were Gary, Lee and Kim. Next to them
were the Stephens or Steevens and daughter Anne. Next to them were Maud
Mayo and ?? Mrs. Bunce. On the corner were the Strange's. Daughter
Beverly stabbed me in the arm with a pencil at Tudor Road, still have
the mark to this day. Almost opposite were the O'neils, Frank, Alice and
sons Johnny, Tommy and Michael. Next to them were Les Ives and wife?
Next to them were the Kings, son Peter was a friend. Other frinds were
Jimmy Few-Spikes Bridge. Raymond Trinder-Dane Road. Alan Hillier-Norman
Avenue. I remember councillor Haigh and daughter Marion. Friend Rodney
Gilmour lived in Viking Road. Hill's moved from Saxon Road to 148, then
moved across the road to 163 about 1951, And mayo family moved around
the corner into Spikes Bridge. Dot Taylor now lived at 148. Other names:
my aunt Beat and Joe Hutt lived in Dane Road, children were Linda,
June, Richard, Dianne and Jo-Jo. They would have had the surnames
Sweales or Hutt. Near them was Flo Clutton. Thats all i can remember for
now. Time for a lie down. Bye bye. Steve ... more >>

There's a few names thats brought
back memories, The Ives (didn't they run the green grocers stall top of
Alexander avenue) the Rockleys boys Barry and Colin, the Stranges, the
Hutts and of course the Findlaters whose garden backed onto mine, I
lived in East Avenue.
The names you mention are familiar to me by way of either going to
school with them (Tudor rd and Dormers Wells) or they were freinds of my older sisters and brothers.
Really does bring back memories
Regards
Did you know the Farndons or Timberlakes? ... more >>

Mrs Pocock had the greengrocers
stall at the top of Northcote Avenue. She lived in Alexandra Avenue, and
the Ive family, who lived opposite to us were also Costermongers. They
lived next door to the Rose family and O'Neills. I recognised lots of
names when I lived there. The Willans lived next door to the Stevens
family. I was very friendly with Mauvine Stevens (who married Kenny Burt
or Burke)she had a
brother Barry and sister Kay. Knew the Farrances on the corner of
Carlyle Avenue, the Mayos lived next door, the Stranges opposite in
Spikes Bridge road. Thanks for the memories Steve. ... more >>

We lived at No.127,next door to the Hiliers.
My grandfather "Ruffy" Rowbottom use to sit at the front gate and speak to all who passed.
I remenber one night when there was a street fight between neighbours
from the private houses, my mother "Doll" Doris Thompson was out there
seperating the offenders.

Hi Thompson. We lived in
Northcote Avenue for 16 years at No. 153. I remember Mrs Hillier, who
used to sit by her gate and chat as you went by. My brother David was
very friendly with Cecil Hillier, an avid fisherman. On my brother's
15th birthday, he and Cecil went to Poyle Pits (on the other side of
Colnbrook), where there were two large gravel-pits. While they fished
there, Cecil, with David's
help, landed a monster Pike weighing 25lbs 5ozs and 36" long. They had
to fetch the bailiff to have it weighed and recorded officially. Cecil
contacted the News of the World with details of his catch, expecting to
win the prize rod and reel of the week, but someone had beaten him to it
by just two ozs heavier! David died last year, and I know Cecil was
quite a bit older. Do you know if he is still alive? ... more >>

Thank you Yvonne for the info.
but although I know the exact date Cecil Hillier caught the Pike - 12th
October 1951 - I'm not into the Archives like you are. Have only been
on the Internet since February! It was my brother's 15th birthday and he
was born on 12th October 1936. The article in the News of the World
evidently came out the following week. What I forgot to mention was that
when Cecil got home the
Pike was put into a bath of water and all his mates came round to admire
it, and they all ended up having a portion of it for their dinners! ... more >>
