Cramic Engineering Co. Bridge Rd. Southall

by Alan Thomas (Member 10214550) on 6-Oct-2007

Are there any ex Cramic folk with memories or
recollections of the company? I worked there from
1960 to the early '70's. After the five year app-
renticeship, I finished as a machine tool fitter
in Dennis Morrison's section. I would be inter-
ested to hear from anyone who worked there in or
around the same time, A.T.

I came across Alan's message
accidentally and got goosebumps when I saw my father's name mentioned.
All that I remember of the firm was the Xmas parties for the
children.Dad loved working at Cramic and was devastated when they made
him redudant after 27 years. He then worked locally in Staines until he
had a massive stroke 3 months before he was due to retire. He was in a
wheelchair for another 20
months but died in 1988 - hence the shock of seeing his name on the net
after all this time.My mother, who is still alive and fairly well, will
be delighted to hear about it. Many thanks Alan for mentioning him. ... more >>

Steve
I remember your father well, he was the works manager of the machine
tool division, building large routing/milling machines for the aircraft
industry, the largest being the one's for Boeing, which went to the USA,
for producing the first Jumbo Jets. I was the young buyer for that
business, so dealt with Dennis most days, on very tight production
schedules.
He was firm but fair, but the MD Ernie Page, was an impossible man work for.
I was there 66 to 70, when I left to become a production buyer for Hoover.
Sorry to hear Dennis passed away so young

Steve,I was really sorry to hear
of your father's demise, he was one of the old school of people who
really knew his trade and got his position because of that knowledge.
Things began to change toward the end of the sixties and management was
shuffled about and new faces were brought in but it was mostly the long
standing employees, not all of whom survived the restructuring, who I
had most respect for and your father was one of those, a thoroughly decent man who knew his job and did it well.

hello,
Is there anybody who remembers working with a Greek guy back in the
sixty's called Vassos Avgousis. He worked with another Greek guy called
Iraklis Loizou although he might be known by the English version
Hercules. Vassos is my brother in law, who lives in the USA and he has
contacted me to find out details for getting some pension owed to him
from the Cramic company. i don't know where to
start, but this looks a promising site. I hope somebody out there can
remember him and perhaps point me in the right direction. ... more >>

Hi all.
I was an apprentice at cramic from 1968 to 1970.I was one of the
group sent from wales when cramic opend a new factory in port
talbot.south wales.(the road it was on is still called cramic way)
I remember working in the apprentice training school with frank
forrest and mr Gittings.(I was 15 at the time)and going to tec colledge
in fetherstone road.
After 2 years we
went back to wales to work at cramic engineering but it closed down a
year or two later. We were offerd the choice of going back to Southhall
or finding an employer in port talbot to continue our apprenticeships.
One of my freinds at the time was Keith Griffiths who
went back to southall but was killed in a motorcycle accident.
I am still in enginnering after a few years in South
Africa.Im working in Cambridge now.(for the last 30 years)I am Chief
Technician.Cambridge University machine shop.So the training I got from
MR Gittings and Frank forrest came in handy.
Best Wishes to you all.

On September 17th 1940, the SS City of Benares was torpedoed. It was

were lost. Of these six of them, to my knowledge, were from Southall-a
sad little piece of Southall history.
