Help by Colin Griffin (Member 10124122) on 8-May-2004
Kerala Link is a UK based charity, helping a school for special needs children, in Kerala, South India. We need to raise funds to provide accomodation for children who are in danger of being having toleave the school and face a very uncertain future. We also need expert help to develop the charities website.

Is there anybody out there willing to help.

Golf Links Estate by Mary (Member 10123404) on 28-Apr-2004
I read on this site that the Golf Links Estate was built in the 1960s. However, according to my father's "National Registration Identity Card" (which for some reason he always kept) he lived at 1 Fleming Road, Golf Links Estate, in 1950. He lived there for just over a year. It's a long time ago but I wonder if anyone remembers him. His name was Richard Tootill and he originated from Wigan in Lancashire. Thanks.
  • Re: Golf Links Estate by Vince Jackson (Member 10004627) on 28-Apr-2004
Yep you are right, the roads around the Golf Links Estate (Fleming, Telford etc) were indeed built in the 1950's but the reference below I believe is about the tower blocks which were built in the sixties. These tower blocks were a different kettle of fish and were degenerating in the sventies into a sink estate, heaven knows what they are like now.

Just to put things right. The golf links estate
was originally built in the 40's after the war.
The roads were constructed by German prisoners of war. I moved in with my parents around 1947. like many children I had a model of an aeroplane, which had been whittled out of wood, given to me by the Germans. The Prefabs were for the returning soldiers who had nowhere to live.

When I was very young( early 1930's), there were just two cinemas, the Gem(opposite Osterly Park Road as I revall), and the Palace(later the Gaumont) in South Road just off the Broadway. The Dominion, and later the Odeon were built in the mid-late 30's. Pre war I used to go to the Odeons Saturday club-3d entrance, for a surfeit of cowboy films and cartoons.

Ernest Etherington by Roderick Brook (Member 10120389) on 22-Mar-2004
Ernest Etherington, my godfather, and his wife Alice lived in Shackleton Road until Ernest's death in the early seventies. He owned a transport business and a hardware shop in North Road, directly round the corner from his house, which happened to be that of the farm on which most of Southall was built.
Did anybody know them at all?

    Rod,
I lived at 74, North Road, from 1933-1954, and remember Etheringtons(and the adjoining shops).
We used to get paraffin, paint etc there. During the war, the North Road Fire Watching group used to do there shifts there. I remember my dad seeing the irony of the firewatching HQ being full of paraffin!

I thought that "Furbers" (which I assume was Miss Furber's shop, as it was a sweet shop) was in Western Road, almost opposite Waltham Road.

I think the shop was next to a barber's shop called "Burns".

Until I was 4, we lived in Townsend Road next to the Aubreys. Vera used to take me to the Salvation Army on ... more >>
