Late night coffee stall

Does anyone remember the old fashioned coffee stall that used to open
at ~9pm, and remained open until the early hours. It was run by a man
called Tom until he retired in the early 50's. His pitch was just off
The Broadway in Greenford Road. He use to heat his pies and sausage
rolls with coke ovens. A lot of his clientel were long distance lorry
drivers, as well as customers from the pubs after c losing time. I had friends in Hayes End, and used to cycle home from parties- a pie and tea were welcome on a cold night. ... more >>

My wife, Peggy (nee Clarke) and I
well remember "Old Tom's", the hiss of his carbide lamp with
its white light, the smell of his fried onions, and the taste of his
hotdogs and pies laced with sauce, eaten in the dark after a dance at
Southall County, the Red Lion, the White Hart, the Hamborough, and even
the Seagull, although that was a bit distant. We were born in 1926/27,
so this occurred during
the war, the whole of which we spent as teenagers. Peggy was born and
brought up in Salisbury Road, and I moved from Acton to Southall when I
was 4, and lived in Kingsley Avenue until I was 7, and thereafter in
Shackleton Road. Peggy went to Clifton Road School, and I to North Road
School, and we both met at Southall County School. Peggy caught
diphtheria in 1942 and spent 13 weeks in Mount Pleasant Isolation
Hospital. For pocket money I worked as an errand boy at the Elite Fish
Buffet in North Road, Meyers in King Street and Stowells in the Broadway
and North Road. Later, after I'd been in the Army and Peggy and I had
got married in Australia, I worked as a teacher at Tudor Road, Dormers
Wells, Featherstone and Southall Tech. I was one of the leaders of
Southall Manor Youth Club, and in the Airborne RAMC at the TA Drill
Hall. We lived in Hanson Gardens and our children were in Southall
Swimming Club which we actively supported, so we have lots of memories
of Southall, although we left it in 1964, and have been living in
Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, ever since. ... more >>

I was delighted to see David
Curtis's entry, which awakened a number of memories. I was born in
1928,and lived in North Road(No 74) from 1933-1954. I wonder if David
and Peggy and I ate Tom's pies together unbeknown, without knowing we
would be recalling the event some 60 years later! As David was at North
Road, we must have overlapped there. The only family I can remember in
Shackleton Road is the
Gwythers-Mr Gwyther was a teacher at Dormers Wells. Was the Elite Fish
Bar in North Parade-until the war years there was a fish and chip shop a
few doors away from us, near Sellars the newsagents. It was run by two
ladies Mrs Stevens and Curtis(surely not?).
I now live in Harpenden in Herts.
Would be pleased to hear from David and Peggy if they feel inclined. ... more >>

I tried in vain to reply a week
ago, and will now try to remember what I wrote. Could it be that
Michael Braden, living at 74, had a grey model of a submarine in the
front bedroom window for years? It was amazing that he remembered Mrs
Stevens and my mother, who not only worked for Mrs Stevens, but cooked
evening meals for her and her grown-up son, Teddy. I took them over on a
tray, spilling the gravy
and whistling loudly all the way. In Sellars in the winter of 1937, I
scorched my right hand on their black, paraffin heater while talking to
Wanda, the young assistant. To relieve the discomfort and get some
sympathy from Miss Dry, at North Road School, I kept shaking it, and
didn't stop even though she told me to; so she caned me on the other
one. Did Michael know Harry Parker and Billy Burke, who lived next to
Dr Olive? Who remembers the men digging for the air-raid shelters on
the Green in North Road, in September 1938? ... more >>

David-my God I had forgotten all
about that submarine-or what happened to it. Likewise, I tried a few
weeks ago to contact you through the system, but nothing happened!
Anyway, my e-mail address is Michaelprf@aol.com.
I remember Miss Dry,and was terrified of her-with good reason
apparently! I remember Billy Burke, and Harry Parker-also Adrian Brooks.
Then there was the Grove Terrace brigade-the Francis
Brothers, Berty Harper, the Barr brothers, Leslie Nelhams. In the early
years of the war a family of girls moved into Grove Terrace, the eldest
being the fearsome Winnie.Indeed I remember the air raid shelters being
built, and later having the odd Craven A in them. What memories! ... more >>

I have tried to make contact through the system, but apparently to no avail.
I knew Leslie Nelhams very well-I guess he was similar in age to me (I
am now 76).To me he always seemed to be looking after his young
sister(Pauline) and brother whose name I forget. His father as I recall
was a painter and decorator.
After all these years I remember him very clearly, and would like to know what became of him.

I don't remember the coffee
stall, but my mother was today recounting memories of her Grandfather
Thomas Gibbons, and mentioned that he had such a stall in that location.
I thought that I would try to find a reference on the internet to some

Steve-interested to read of your
mother's recollections. As I recall the coffee stall was kept in Herbert
Avenue when not in use- I have recollections of seeing it being wheeled
out -across the Uxbridge Road!- into Greenford Avenue at ~9pm. I always
assumed Tom lived around there.

Is there anyone out there, amongst this group, clever enough to set up a

Southall Isolation Hospital

The Isolation Hospital was situated on North Road, near where the road
bends right to go up to the Beehive pub, and certainly existed up to
WW2, and possibly afterwards. It dealt with a)Diphtheria b) Scarlet fever
as it was then called. I was there with scarlet fever in 1938 during
the Munich crisis. Does anyone els remember it?
- Re: Southall Isolation Hospital
by Alan Ansell (Member 10052800) on 29-Aug-2003
HI Michael: if you are talking
about the Hospital which housed TB patients in the 50's, I was there.
For the life of me I can't remember the name of the place. I spent 9
months in there with TB from May to December 1957,(I was 17) and was
then moved to a large mansion in Harrow Weald to do 3 months
rehabilitation.
- Re: Southall Isolation Hospital
by Alan Ansell (Member 10052800) on 30-Aug-2003
I have now remembered the name of that Hospital where I spent 9 months of my life. It was Mount Pleasant.
- Re: Southall Isolation Hospital
by Michael Braden (Member 10097376) on 30-Aug-2003
Well done Alan! You are quite
right. A couple of memories have come back to me. One of the
orderlies/ambulance drivers was called Dickinson-his daughter was a
contemporary of mine at North Road. Of the chldren in my ward there was
Heather Kerridge and David Ward.
- Re: Southall Isolation Hospital
by Dilys Boot (Member 10061138) on 31-Aug-2003
Hi,I was also in Mount Pleasant
Hosp When it was an isolation hosp. with Scarlet Fever. That would have
been in the mid forties. In 1948 we moved to Allendale Avenue and backed
onto the hospital. You are correct in saying it became a TB hosp. for a
while but once TB was eradicated it became a hospital for people
disabled elderly and dying.
A few years before I moved from there in 1991 it had been knocked
down and rebuilt as an old peoples home which apparently it still is.
Going back to the Scarlet Fever I was about 5 years old and still
remember my Mum and Dad visiting but they could only look through the
window and wave which was very upsetting. How times change eh! ... more >>
- Re: Southall Isolation Hospital
by Michael Braden (Member 10097376) on 4-Sep-2003
Dilys has reawakened a memory
that has been dormant for 65 years-i.e visiting parents having to be
outside, and trying to communicate through the windows. I seem to rember
that I was in for two weeks, changing wards at the end of the first
week. I also recall the food was pretty basic!
- Re: Southall Isolation Hospital
by Dilys Boot (Member 10061138) on 4-Sep-2003
I don't have very good memories
of being in Mount Pleasant Isolation Hospital.Although very young they
have stayed with me and given me quite a phobia about hospitals.I
remember one nurse who was quite sadistic and today would be thrown out
of any childrens ward. Who could we tell when we couldn't even speak to
our parents only wave through the window as if we were in a zoo. Nobody
explained anything to you
in those days so you really didn't know why you were in there.I don't
know how long I was in for but even now it seems like a lifetime.Thank
goodness things have changed in hospitals for children. At least they
don't have a lifelong fear of them these days. ... more >>
- Re: Southall Isolation Hospital
by Alan Ansell (Member 10052800) on 13-Sep-2003
Michael: I guess I had forgotten
about the scarlet fever days. I am not sure if my older brother Ron,
and my sister Iris were in there with me too, but you sure brought it
back with the memories of Mum and Dad peering at us thorugh the windows.
I was about five then, just around the end of WW2. It may even been a
little earlier. Southall was a good place then. My 21 year old
daughter just visited
there for a day in June (she spent the summer staying and working in
Reading). My brother Derek drove her all around Southall taking photos
of various places I had listed for them. What memories came back when
they told me they had lunch at the Junction Arms pub. We (me and my
brothers and sister) were born in Marlborough Rd., that is except Derek.
He was born in Hillingdon Hospital. ... more >>

one entrance to the Hospital was next to a block of flats behind the

- Re: Southall Isolation Hospital
by Dilys Boot (Member 10061138) on 17-Oct-2003
Those flats were not built until
the early fifties I believe. That area was just a patch of waste
ground. We didn't move to Allendale Ave until 1948 and I can remember
them being built some time after that. The first tenants to move in
thought they were very much a cut above the older type council house
dwellers and always came out to any children who didn't actually live in
the flats to tell us that
the green outside was their private property. Still, take a look at
them now eh.Most property in Allendale and surrounding area was bought
and many improvements made and looked much better than those flats in
the end. What goes around comes around!!!!!! ... more >>

During either my second or
third year at Southall Junior Tech (1944/1945), a group of us went down
in the evenings to help out with some urgent order for the RAF, under
the supervision of our Metalwork Master, Bert Mansell. Funny Cramic's
name coming up after all these years.

I believe that Cramic moved out
to the Banbury area. At one time they were off Western Road, almost
opposite the Football Ground. Our brother John used to work for them
in those days.

I used to work at the Cramic in
the mid 60's and spooky enough I went to the Southall Tech School from
59 to 63 and our metal work master was Bert Mansell as well, he even
told me to work in any industry except anything to do with metal yet I
qualified as a toolmaker and work at Cramic as a precision miller. I
believe the factory site may still be there but not Cramic.

This is a response to a very old
posting, re Cramic. I served an apprenticeship there, it started in 1960
and lasted for five years. I
have very fond memories of the factory and the
fellow workers there. It finally closed down
around 1971. It is probably a bit late in the day
to post this reply, but if anyone is interested
enough to get in touch, feel free.
