Hello
It may seem an obvious situation but if you go back over the old messages, some of the names you mention are listed.
I know some of them well but do not necessarily remember you; I went to
Greenford Grammar because I lived on that part of the town. Our ages
are similar thats the only link. Did you know Tony Marshall at Sunday
Youth Club who sang with the Moonshiners?
Did your wife live in Southall before marrying? ... more >>

Hi Geoff,
I remember you, both from SGS and SYC, although you might remember my sister, Janet, rather better than me.
Have you looke at the Old Southallians website at:- http://groups.msn.com/OldSouthallians
We have quite a few members of our era, and we organised a very
successful reunion last April, with half a dozen people who left the
school pre-war!

Hi. My name is Helen Reynolds and
I am writing unknowlingly on behalf of my dad John Leather. He lived
in Wentworth Road with his two sisters Anita and Beryl. He is retiring
on the 28th March this year (yes I have left it very late ) but you
never know someone out there may know him. It would be great to put him
in touch with old colleagues. He often speaks of his "Southall Days"
with great fondness.

by John W (Member 10082501) on 13-Mar-2003
Hi Helen, I lived close to John
on Wentworth Rd., do remember John although we weren't really friends,
he was a little younger than me. I also remember Beryl but not Anita.
Beryl was a few years older than me and I remember her very well,
although I doubt she would remember me.
At that age we didn't mix with kids out of our age group very much I guess. It was good to see there names mentioned here though. Close neighbours of theirs I remember were Brian Preece and Vernon Card.
Didn't John's father work at the AEC. I did my apprenticship there. I am
living near San Fransisco now, having lived in the USA for many years.
I wrote a little elsewhere on this page under "war time memories".

tonight. I will also mention it to my auntie Beryl...so exiting! I
recognise the other names you mention and yes my dad's father, Bert did
work at the AEC. Most of the family moved to Basingstoke, Hampshire but
Beryl and her family live in Staines, Middx. Dad wants to visit
Southall so we shall be
doing a bit of reminiscing, hopefully on the 30th March. He really wants

Reg Faulding and Joan Press. She also thinks your wife may be a

- Re: Old Friends
by John W (Member 10082501) on 8-Apr-2003
Hi Helen, sounds like that could
be my mother. She lived in the same house in Wentworth Rd until 1995.
One of the last original occupants. We lived at 49 Wentworth Rd. Accross
the road from the Ford's Tony and Malcolm. We still get a Christmas
card every year from Brenda and Malcolm Ford. They are now living in
Worcester, near Evesham. Also remember the dancing at the Dominion,
until it was closed for
too many fights. Southall wasn't much of a place for places to go for a
night out. I now live near San Francisco. I remember at times walking
through Southall thinking there has to be a better place to live than
Southall. Well I certainly have found a great place to live and just
love it here. ... more >>

Terry. We lived in Tentelow Lane, Norwood Green. My sister's married
name was Fairhead; she
had eight children and lived in Lady Margaret Road. We have just lost

I have been contacted by a chap who is researching the football club.
In my days they used to play at Western Road and were sponsored by Bob
Fowler who ran the bakers in that Road.
They used to play in the Athenian League but I now understand they do
not have a ground in Southall and share a ground at Chalfont.
I think it was 1952 that they got to the semi-final of the Amateur Cup. They had crowds of around 10,000 during that cup run and games were televised.
Any memories would be welcome!

Hi Linda: I worked at Kearley
& Tonge in Brent Road Southall for a couple of years from 1955 to
1957, along with my brother Ron and my sister Iris. We worked in the
biscuit factory. I don't know if that is the location of the tea
warehouses you speak of, or if K & T is still there. When you go
along Brent Road from Western Road, the road takes a dog-leg to the
right after about 200 to 300 yds.
K & T's gates were right at that point, on your left. We lived in
Marlborough Road, just further along Brent Road past Derly Road. The K
& T factory was there together with Ticklers jam factory adjacent,
through the second World War, but I don't know when those factories were
built. ... more >>

I don't if this may help, my
father worked for KT during the sixties they where wholesale suppliers
to the catering trade (hospitals. works canteens, bakery's, hotels etc
etc,) they where taken over by International Stores in about 1970 who
where a supermarket cahin store I believe they were subsequently
swallowed up by one of the Big Boys (Tesco?)
Prior to becoming a food distributor the KT premises
were a biscuit production plant, I don't know if this existed early
this century. The actual buildings are long gone and the site is called
the International Indsutrial Estate. I have fond memories delivering

Kearley and Tonge produced
various products under the brand name "Mitre", and - I believe - that
before they moved to Southall they were in Whitechapel, and that "Jack
the Ripper" murdered one of his victims in front of their premises in
Mitre Yard.
- Re: Kearly & Tonge Tea Warehouses
by jennifer lamy (Member 10085642) on 18-Feb-2003
thank you for all your all your replies. I am overwhelmed with info and will check out those map coordinates asap.
From my understanding of the turn of the century Kearley & Tonge had
a massive empire in the tea and general commodities trade with
warehouses scattered all over the London area, many of them in the
Whitechapel area - and quite right three victims of Jack the Ripper were
actually murdered
outside Kearly & Tonge warehouses - but as well as all over the
docklands area. I am interested in finding out exactly where these
warehouses were located and if it is possible to track down some of the
history of the people who worked for them in those days.
I have attempted to research this with no success now for many years so if anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear of them.
I am a writer - who has already published a book on Jack the Ripper -
and would be very interested in anyone out there who has the mettle to
flesh these details out.
best wishes to the lot of you.

War time memories

I have read all of the past messages and can find
little reference to the last world war. I can remember the first Air
Raid warning at about 11.00am on I believe a Sunday morning. This was
in Ascot Gardens and I was outside with my late brother when along the
road came a policeman on a bicycle blowing a whistle telling everybody
to get inside and take whatever cover they could take. We got behind the sofas!!
I can also remember going to the fields between Lady Margaret Road and
the canal with my father to see the big searchlights that were
positioned there. We were of course in direct line with Northolt
Airport which had Spitfire squadrons stationed there and many Polish
Pilots. Ascot Gardens itself was badly damaged especially at the far
end by a large Land Mine.
Me, my brother and two sisters were evacuated to Burton on Trent in 1944
at the peak of the Battle of Britain and returned in late 1945. Are
there any other people who made what seemed a very long train ride in
those days? Nowadays of course it is about a two hour car ride on a
reasonable day.
Me and my family were put in with two families in
Derby Street right opposite Trumans Brewery. Not old enough to drink
but well remember the smell of the brewery - must have been that which
gave me the taste!! ... more >>

During the war I lived with my aunt in
Queens Rd. near the gasworks.
My father was in the RAF and my mother worked at Heston Airfield.
I remember going into a shelter at Featherstone Rd. infants, and there
was a huge explosion while we were in there. A bomb must have dropped
fairly close by but I never knew where it fell.
There was a large brick shelter built in the street right in front of our house, which as far as I remember no one ever used.
On a Saturday morning we kids would go to the Saturday morning pictures
at the Palace Cinema near Southall Town Hall. I think it was sixpence to
get in which was a lot of money to us then.
My mother grew up in Camden Town and every Sunday we would visit my Grandmother in Highgate.
We would take the train from Southall Station to Paddington and then a
No 27 bus to Highgate. I hated the journey and used to read aloud the
war time posters like "Is your journey really necessary".
My cousin who was eleven years older than me joined the ATS and had a
Canadian boyfriend who used to visit, although she married a Welshman
who was taken prisoner at Dunkirk and spent the whole war in a German
POW camp.
I was eight when the war ended and there was a big bonfire and party in the street.
After the war we moved to Wentworth Rd which is actually in Heston but closer to Southall.
Well that's a few of my wartime memories.
I now live in California near San Francisco.

Hi, John,
What is your name?
We must be near contemporaries, as I was born in 1936, in Queen's Road
(right next-door to the film studios), but we moved to Manor Way, when I
was very young (pre-war).
I went to Western Road School, then Southall Grammar School.

Hi Jon & David: my name is
Alan Ansell. David, I vaguely remember you. I believe you have some
brothers and sisters. One of them may have been in my class at Western
Road primary. I ahve also seen you listed in the "friendsreunited" web
site. We lived in Marlborough Road off Brent Road, and I was born in
August '39, two weeks before the war started. I remember a lot about
Heston Aerodrome. My
parents used to billet the servicemen, and one Guy Bill, drove one of
those wopping 80 feet long "Queen Mary" lorries with a flat bed. He
used to go around picking up the crashed aircraft, and before he took
them back to Heston, he would bring them round and park in our street.
The vehicle took up half the street. The kids came from everyewhere,
and were all over tha aircraft like ants. We got bomb-sights, gas
masks, morse code tappers, and all sorts of stuff out of thos aircraft.
He brought round Meshersmitts, Junkers 88, Mosquitos, Starlings, you
name it. I just wish I knew what happened to all that stuff we got from
those aeroplanes. I remember well too, the doodlebugs, V1's and V2's
coming over from the coast of France, running out of fuel, and dropping
all over the London area. We used to sleep in the Anderson shelter in
the back garden, with the rats and mice, the dampness and the cold.
Those Saturday morning trips to the gas works with the wheelbarrow to
get 28lbs. of coke to heat our homes are indelible memories. ... more >>

- Re: War time memories
by John W (Member 10082501) on 9-Dec-2002
Hi my name is John Wootton, I
don't think we ever met but we grew up in the same part of Southall.
Although Wentworth Rd was on the Heston side of the canal. I'm sure we
knew some of the same people and share some of the same experiences.
After the war we moved from Queens Rd to Wentworth Rd. I changed
schools, going from Featherstone Rd Juniors to Norwood Green School.
What I mostly remember about
Norwood Green was Mr Wilkes the headmaster, who's favorite teaching and
educational tool was the cane, which he liked to use on the slightest
provocation.
Some of my fellow class mates went on to Southall Grammar, unfortunately
I was not one of them. From Norwood Green I went on to "Heston
Secondary Modern", (How did they come up with that name?). Which was a
much more pleasant experience for me, after the terror of N.G. and Mr
Wilkes.
I spent some happy days in the Boy Scouts. Do you remember the Scouts
hut next to Ives the newsagents? Some of the scouts I remember who lived
in the area are; Claude Humphries, Tony "Tosh" O'Shea, Danny Drew and
Lenny Potts.
Some of the people from Wentworth Rd and Norwood Green who went to
Southall Grammar, Western rd or Featherstone Rd school are Micheal
Kelly, David Carter, Tony Hood, Pauline Davis (very pretty girl from
N.G. School). Leon and Ivan Hicks, Roy Carslake, Francis & Terry
Diamond, Ann Rosamond (also a very pretty girl) all the Holt girls
Mildred, Dorothy, Edie and Majorie. Pat Wootton My cousin went to
Southall Grammar.
I seem to be going on a bit so I'll leave it here.
Maybe you'll know some of the people I mentioned.
Perhaps we can get some memories from the 50's.

Hi John Wooten. I don't know if
your message was directed at me (Alan Ansell), but I certainly remember
the scout hut next to Ives. I believe my youngest brother Derek said
there is still a convenience store there. We used to go to Sunday
school in the scout hut. Didn't Claude Humphries live in Marlborough
Road? My older brother Ron was very sweet on Ann Rosamond. I am sure
Ann, Ron, and Roy
Carslake were all in the same class at Western Road Primary. Didn't
Brian Osler also live in Wentworth Road. He and Ron were very good
friends. Ron lives in Reading, Berkshire. I remember Leon and Ivan
Hicks, and I may be right in saying your cousin Pat Wooten was in my
sister Iris's class. Iris is now 65, and lives in Canberra, Australia.

Re Maynard's wartime memories. I
just remembered something. You mentioned those long brick built
shelters in the streets of Southall. We had two in Marlborough Road.
One was right outside Ronny Mosdall's house, that was about number 88
Marlborough Road. If you go to Marlborough Road now, and look down the
side of number 109 (the last house in the street), that 6 feet high
brick wall down the alleyway,
along the back garden of 109 ,was built by our Dad, with bricks from
that wartime air raid shelter. I can remember them coming round with
that huge concrete ball on a big crane, and swinging it to smash the
shelters down after the war. We carried a lot of those bricks over, two
or three at a time, to our back garden, while dad was at work, and we
helped him to mix the cement. He did all that brickwork himself, and he
was a tool maker at Hoovers. Dad (bless him) lives in Canberra,
Australia now, and is 94 years old (December 2002). He is still driving
his car. Dad also built that conservatory on the back of number 109.

raids. A bomb fell on Barrats shoe shop in South Road one evening during
the blitz, and killed the Seymour sisters, one of whom was previously
in my class at North Road.(They were waiting for a bus, having been to
the Palace cinema.) A large bomb fell in the Argyle Road area, and a
small one on the boundary
of North Road School and Abbots Timber Firm. A flying bomb fell in
Southall Park, and brought the ceiling in on my bed-fortunately I was in
the Morrison shelter downstairs! I seem to remember a land mine falling

In the many and interesting war

in Osterly Park Road. One of the young men referred to above, Renee

morning pictures at the Palace, the Manor House gardens, where I fell in

remember names now. Digging deep into my memory, some names I remember,
Johnnie Couch, Derrick & Roy Ridley (not sure how their last name is
spelled) Chris Lyon, there were others but can't remember their names
now, and the only girl I remember is Joyce Carter. I remember her
because I used to see her at the Dominion dances on Saturday nights,

- Re: War time memories

I have been reading through these
again since the first entry by "Maynard" nearly six years ago. The
mention of the land mine in Ascot Gardens got me thinking of other bombs
etc that fell on Southall during WW2. There were two periods, i.e the
blitz during 1940/1941 , then the V1's in the later months of the war
Here is my list from memory:
i) Incendiary bomb burnt out the top floor of Woolworths.
ii) Small bomb fell on the boundary between Abbot's Wood Yard, and North Road School-little damage.
iii)A bomb fell on Barret's Shoe shop one evening, which must have
shaken the people in the Palace Cinema at the time. Very sadly two
sisters (Seymour??) were standing in the doorway of Barrets waithing for
a bus, and were killed- Dolly had been in my class at North Road. My
father told me the next morning that shoes were strewn all over South
Road.
iii) A small bomb in Hamilton Road -??>
iv) A large bomb fell in the Argyll Road area, making a very large crater-I don't think there were any serious injuries.
v) A bomb fell on the sidings of the GWR railway- lifted one wall of the Villiers Scout out.
Now to the V1's. One fell in Southall Park, and the other I think in the Regina Road area.
What have I forgotten?? ... more >>
