Have you looke at the Old Southallians website at:- http://groups.msn.com/OldSouthallians

Hi. My name is Helen Reynolds and I am writing unknowlingly on behalf of my dad John Leather. He lived in Wentworth Road with his two sisters Anita and Beryl. He is retiring on the 28th March this year (yes I have left it very late ) but you never know someone out there may know him. It would be great to put him in touch with old colleagues. He often speaks of his "Southall Days" with great fondness.

I lived in North road during WW2,and after. I remember the outbreak clearly, and the first air raids. A bomb fell on Barrats shoe shop in South Road one evening during the blitz, and killed the Seymour sisters, one of whom was previously in my class at North Road.(They were waiting for a bus, having been to the Palace cinema.) A large bomb fell in the Argyle Road area, and a small one on the bound... more >>

A brief addition to the previous message-I have belatedly noticed John W lived in Queens Road during the war. I had relatives there at that time, who lived more or less opposite the junction with Hartington Road, opposite a small shop-can't remember the number. There was Uncle Bon(John)-of whom I was terrified, Auntie Emma, and their children who were already adults when I was small- Albert, Jack,... more >>

In the many and interesting war time memories listed, none have included the large influx of Belgian refugees in 1940. We had two young men billeted on us, who were with us until they went into the army. For the rest of the war we had Mr van dem Branden, who as I recall was the Belgian Liason officer, with an office in Osterly Park Road. One of the young men referred to above, Renee Dubocou (an ... more >>

The shop on the corner of Hartington Road and Queens Road was called Gardners, but it may have changed it's name to Colemans, when Mrs Gardner died, and her daughter took over the shop.

My elder brother Brian was a friend of Johnny Wotton during his war time stay with his aunt at 41 Queens Road. We lived across the road at 32, 48 being the house of our Taylor grandparents. His uncle and my father worked in Southall Gasworks.

  • Re: War time memories by John W (Member 10082501) on 23-Mar-2004
Hi Alan, I only just saw your message. Brian was my closest friend during the war, after the war when we moved from Queens Rd I lost touch. I remember those war years. Your Dad was in the Army and mine was in the RAF, Brian and I was the same age, and used to tag along with the bigger boys. Going to Saturday morning pictures at the Palace, the Manor House gardens, where I fell in the pond. Hard to... more >>

Just been reading these old messages. I know its years ago, but this is to Alan Taylor, if you are still looking at this site, I think we might be related. I am also a Taylor from Southall, and my grandfather lived in Queens Road at one time and worked at the gas works. Please contact me on jack.t@ntlworld.com if you read this.

Have just noticed the entries from Alan and Jack Taylor. I had relatives( the Benders) who lived in Queens Road as far back as I can remember(I am 77);the last family member to leace there was Vic Bender, I think in the 1970's.My uncle was a postman, but worked later at Southall Studios.

I have just noticed (some 5 years late!) John W's account of a bomb that fell when he was ar Featherstone Road School. I suspect this was the V1 which fell in the Regina Road area.

I have just found this site, thanks to another member, and came across this old message.
Does anyone remember the Clayton family at 98 Queens Rd. Mum and Dad lived there from 1936 to 1956. The name Cavell is very familiar.

I have been reading through these again since the first entry by "Maynard" nearly six years ago. The mention of the land mine in Ascot Gardens got me thinking of other bombs etc that fell on Southall during WW2. There were two periods, i.e the blitz during 1940/1941 , then the V1's in the later months of the war Here is my list from memory:

There are two other instances of bombs that I remember , one that fell at the top of Saxon Rd by the large emergency water tank. A curb stone went through the roof of the house across the road from us,the Escotts lived there. The other was a stick of bombs down the back gardens of Lancaster Rd stopping short of Wimpy`s.
