I post this here because part of the school was on Lady Margaret's Road
and many ex pupils lived in Southall. I was there between 1945 and
1949.
Any one else that attended. Being a football fanatic I can remember
appearing at Wembley Stadium in 1946 at a Festival of Youth which was
attended by Princess Elizabeth and her late sister Princess Margaret.
It was a celebration of
youth after the second
worls war. Our school was also used as one of the dormitorys for
competitors at the 1948 London Olympic Games and as we were in the 5th
form we were selected to help make the competitors feel at home and in
return we were given tickets for the events at Wembley Stadium. I can
also recall the Marathon which went close to the school and turned to go
back near Northolt Airport.
Any one else out there from that era!!! ... more >>

I thought people might like to
know that I have made contact with fellow pupils and classmates through
the website at Friends Reunitted.co.uk.
People who I have not heard from for nearly fifty years! I am still
looking for the date when those pupils from Lady Margaret Junior School
were
evacuated to Burton on Trent. Seemed a long way from home in those days but can do it these days in just over 2 hours - on a good day! ... more >>

Does anyone remember going to the fair on the green on the Uxbridge Road?
As a kid I vaguely recall a one legged high diver named "Dare-devil
Peggy" diving into a tank of burning water. I believe he missed only
once!
I also remember years later on losing all my money on the Dive Bomber.

by Dilys Boot (Member 10061138) on 6-Mar-2002
Yes I remember the fair. Also
losing money on the dive bomber.Remember the Firework Display every
August Bank Holiday too and the Southall Carnivalwith great floats from
all the local factories. Must stop looking back!
- Re: Fairground
by maynard (Member 10063441) on 24-Mar-2002
I was born in Southall in 1933
and attended Lady Margaret Infants and Junior Schools and then went on
to Greenford County Grammar School.
I well remember the Bank Holiday Carnival because I was involved with
the town's cycle speedway team The Southall Hammers. We always had a
float in the Carnival and held our race meetings on a piece of land
between Lady Margaret's Road and The Grand Union Canal.
I met my wife through this organisation and she came from Townsend
Road and her father worked at Southall Station. He used to look after
the animals which arrived at the station for Billy Smart's Circus.
Billy and his family lived in Southall. I saw Dare Devil Peggy
(sometimes called Peg Leg Pete) at the shows in Southall Park. We were
evacuated from Southall in 1944 and take to Burton on Trent.
My wife and I now live in the New Forest. My wife
also worked in Dorothy Perkins, the Jewish owned(Mr and Mrs Shack)ladies
clothes shop and Harolds Sports shop all in the High Street.
The famous singer Cleo Laine came from Southall and I remember her at
the Drill Hall at Hayes Bridge singing with a band called the
Modernaires which I believe was organised by the record shop at the
other end of the High Street, just passed the Three Horse Shoes pub
(opposite the Fire Station). There was also an exceptional jazz club at
The White Hart pub on a Tuesday evening as well as the Crane River Jazz
Club at Cranford.
I could go on and on as we lived there for more than 25 years! ... more >>

I remember, as a schoolboy during
the fifties, trying to sneak into the White Hart a couple of times
because Chris Barber was playing in there. Lonnie Donegan was playing
banjo for him then, before Skiffle took him away. The worse thing is
that it only seems months ago!!
- Re: Fairground
by maynard (Member 10063441) on 21-Sep-2002
I can remember when the White
Hart Tuesday Night Jazz Club was open in the summer in the room at the
back of the pub they had opening doors at the
rear and I believe many underage drinkers used to listen from outside as
well as enjoy the odd drink. Drink was not the main attraction in
those days; the music was the thing.
On the matter of Cleo Laine (Clementina Langridge)
nee Campbell, my late
cousin Beryl from South Avenue Gardens married Cleo's brother Alex who
was a good jazz drummer as well as a very good singer. It was him that
interested me in modern jazz although my original style was Dixieland
which accounts for my visits to the White Hart and the Crane River at
Cranford.

It's funny that you shoudl
mention Cleo Laine. My dad was at school with her and he remembers her
well singing at dances above the Dominion, and also working in Batas the
shoe shop. We moved up the Milton Keynes about 16 years ago, and Mum
and Dad followed shortly after, and low and behold, Cleo Laine lives here
as well. She has her own theatre/club in Wavendon, Milton Keynes.

and Flo Robottom live in Regina Road along with her brother Jack Milson.
I understand that they lived in one room flats there.
Ruffy and Flo were great friends with Sally Beach, who's fair's winter
quarters were in Regina Rd. As a kid I can remember visiting "Aunt
Sally" in her trailer at the winter quarters but also in Southall Park
when on tour. An Aunt also worked for Nellie Beach who was at Hounslow.
My family also knew Billy and Charlie Smart of the circus fame.
Billy use to have a site at Norwood Green and it was interesting to
learn that after the second world war Billy's first circus was held in
Southall Park. My mum Doll Thompson use to know Billy's son Ronny quite
well.

I may agree with the Havelock Estate being in the 'knock it down'
catagory as it stands, but it was a great place to live prior to the
building of the new estate. Does anybody out there remember it before
the fields were built over.
- Re: Havelock Estate
by Derek Harris (Member 10054164) on 6-Feb-2002
Yes I remember the time before
the Havelock Estate was built. There used to be a dog racing track there
and Buckingham Terrace down by the canal and some factory ruins and of
course the site where the Martin Brothers had their pottery factory and
the rest was like you say were fields up to the cemetary grounds.

Stop beating about the bush, the
whole town should be bombed, it used to be a thriving town full of
industry, decent housing, lots of things to do, Bowling, Cinema etc etc.
its now the pits.
Its a crying shame how such a town can degenerate in such a short space of time (35yrs) I wonder why?
My Dad worked from Norwood Farm Dairies down Havelock road I clearly remember that it was almost like being miles from anywhere, the canal and open fields made it feel almost like being somewhere other than a suburb of London.
The Dairy buildings are long gone and the site is being developed into the biggest Mosque outside Mecca......... Southall RIP ... more >>

Dear Vince,
You are clearly living in the past and not keeping up with developments
that have happened to Southall over the past 35 years. When my parents
came here in 1941 it was the pits in those days, the derelict buildings
by the railways was the first sight they saw and the cinema that was
dubbed the flea pit. Now we have a beautifully restored cinema in south
road and the streets are decorated
with beautiful light standards and lights. There are now excellent new
housing estates been built. Southall has become a world specialist
centre much sought after by people seeking a curry nosh or quality
textiles specialist foods or jewellrey. Industry has been in decline
nationally but we still have Quaker Oats and other specialist food
manufacturers that have come in to the area. contrary to your belief we
have eight active christian churches in Southall, St Johns, Holy
Trinity, St Anselms, Kings Hall, St George, St Marys, Baptist and Christ
the Redeemer ( my apologies to the other denominations I have not
mentioned ). we have one main Mosque and a muslim cultural centre. ( I
wouldn't say it rivalled Mecca ). You failed to mention that Norwood
Farm Dairies was sold to the Sikhs for them to build the Guru Singh
Sabha on the site. There are three main Sikh Gurdwaras and two centres.
there is also a Ravi Dass centre and two Hindu Temples (mandhir). So all
beliefs are catered for in Southall not just the Muslims. Southall has
become a multicultural town where people live in peace and harmony which
is more than I can say about other parts of the country or the world.
Of course ther is room for improvement; isn't that true of other areas
that is why we have a regeneration project in progress. Yes I still get
my milk from the smae milkman we had 35 years ago he decided to stay
around!

- Re: Havelock Estate

It looks like you are targetting
one estate that was the norm for many parts of the country. It was an
unfortunate architectural period where economic use of land was the
object not defensible space. Most of the housing in Southall is
privately owned and on the whole are well maintained. You can tell which
houses are private on the council estates because of the improvements.
The problem of unlicensed
cars and burned out cars littering the streets is a national problem
even to the extent that green belt land is being littered with such
vehicles. I can say that there has been many estates of good quality
housing built in Southall recently :- lancaster Road extension, Southall
football ground, the old Adelaide depot site and Top Locks to name a
few. Traffic congestion is also a national problem. you only have to go
onto the M25 to prove my point. You try to get through any town in the
UK these days, impossible. Contrary to your belief my eyes are wide
open.

Crime against the person is also a
national problem not peculiar to Southall and don't we have a
multistorey car park in the centre of Southall and controlled parking
spaces. On street parking is also a national problem.

- Re: Havelock Estate

But we are not talking
'nationaly' you were talking about Southall, sure there may be worse
places in the UK but but Southall is in the top ten of festering dumps.
We obviously have different opinions on what constitutes a dump but
where I live now I have clean streets, empty roads, fresh air, almost
crime free, patrking spaces, lots of work and no sink estates, before
you ask its south of London and is as close to two major towns as Southall is to London. ... more >>

putting in my two pennyworth ! My
father and myself were born in Southall (I was born in Townsend Road).
My grandfather remembered when there was an apple orchard near to
Southall Railway station and a smithy where the townhall stands. My
aunt formed the first socialist party in Southall. I was proud of my
home town and stayed until I had children of my own. The town quickly
deteriorated in the 60's
and when I had a family of my own, and I felt a minority, I knew it was
time to leave, my children were outsiders in their own town. The
Southall of my childhood was a safe place apart from the odd flasher. I
would spend all day wandering in the golf links looking for frogsporn
or golf balls, scrumping apples from the posh houses away from the
council estate where I lived, or climbing the trees in Dormers Wells
Lane. I built cubby houses on the dump (where an old people's home is
now built) and hung around 'the green' until it was dusk. We didnt need
TV as there was always something to do. I moved with my family
overseas and now live in a safe city where my children dont know what it
is to be afraid to go out after dark and the streets are free of
litter. The last time I visited the UK, I rode the bus from Hounslow to
Southall then Greenford. The bus was very crowded and I could feel the
animosity between passengers. I could have cried at the neglect I saw
around me - shops boarded up and rubbish everywhere. There is no pride
in the town any more - it has lost its identity. ... more >>

I was born in Southall and
remember the Havelock Road area very well. I think Tuesday night was
Greyhound Racing and you used to be able to get round the back without
paying or look over the fence. My courting days used to include walking
down Havelock Road to the Canal and then walking to the Three Bridges.
My wife, who also lived in Southall has not very pleasant memories of

Hi - I just wanted to add my two
pennorth. We moved to the Havelock Estate when the houses were first
built and it was a brilliant place to live, surrounded by fields to play
in. We had a wonderful childhood there, but boy, how that all changed.
My parents stayed there until about 15 years ago and they couldn't
take any more. Apart from turning into a slum area, they were burgled
and afraid to open their front door, let alone venture out at night.
Southall was a thriving town in the 50's and 60's with so much to offer.
A selection of cinemas, lovely parks and shopping there was fantastic -
especially Southall Broadway.
I used to spend most Sunday nights at the Community Centre where we saw
all the top groups and we also had a lot of the top performers of the
60's at the Dominion.
If only Southall could have stayed just as it was - I for one would still be there now. ... more >>

Hi everyone, what lovely memories
you all bring back. I was born in Adelaide Road in 55, I remember the
dog track, and the building of the Havelock Estate. Also, we had some
brilliant shops - Pearsons, Bobby Cousins (the in and out shop) The
Maypole, Liptons and Norwood Farm Daries, then there was a green grocers
and Mullingers fish stall opposite the White Swan. We moved fron the
King Street side over to
`New Southall` off Lady Margaret Road (where my mum still lives), and I
can remember her crying every day for months cos she hated it so much.

I lived in Panhard Place in 50 to 60s. Looking for David Bensalum (had
younger brother Paul). Think he emigrated to OZ in the 60s.
Also Phillip Brown who was my best mate until we reached around 12 when our parents decided our relationship was unhealthy !!
Also looking for Stephanie Clements who lived in Park Ave Southall (the posh houses !).

Dear Mary - Have you a sister
Barbara Why? I have a group photo taken at Dormers Wells school showing
Mrs Bowles, Barbara Why, Gloria Birkhead and Doreen Haig. Afraid I
don't know any of the others as they were the year before mine - can
send the photo via email if there is a connection between you. I lived
at 6 Faraday Road during the late 1950s, surname Johnson, and have
brothers Maurice and Roy.
Do you remember families named Grimes and Dunham from Panhard? Clarke,
Garaty, Johnson, Buckland, Workman, Langley, Lee, Dowling from Faraday?
Look forward to hearing from you. Janice ... more >>

by Ratchford (Member 10040046) on 7-Feb-2002
hi janice
Thanks for your response. Barbara Why would have been my second cousin.
My great grandad moved to Southall with his brother and the two
brothers married sisters. Billy Why was my dad's cousin and he and his
family lived in Margaret Road (?). We didnt know we were related at the
time I lived in Southall. Mrs Bowles was the games teacher at dormers I
think. Yes I remember the Grimes family.
Andrew Grimes was the same age as me. When I was first married I
lived in Susses Road Southall and I think the Grimes moved somewhere
over that side because I saw Mrs Grimes once pushing a pram with Myra's
baby in it. I also remember Mrs Dunham who lived a couple of doors away
from me. I remember Mr Young's sweetshop in Faraday Road. I stole a
halfpenny chew from his shop once but couldnt eat it because of the
guilt ! I remember making cubby houses on the 'dump' opposite his shop.
They have since built an old people's home on the land. You can
contact me at my email address by logging onto the Friends United site
under Dormers Wells High School. If you went to Dormers, have you
checked out this site ?. You can look for ex pupils of both the Dormers
Senior and Primary school. regards Mary ... more >>

Nothing to do with Golf Links
Estate, really, but I've only just discovered this site and was
staggered to see a mention of Myra Grimes. I grew up in Tachbrook Road
and remember Myra "appearing" around 1964/5 (?) in Southall Rec. Being a
young lad, we did a bit of flirting but I was far too scared to
actually ask her out! (I seem to remember my Mum wasn't over-impressed
with the relationship).
Whatever happened to Myra? I had a schoolfriend (Keith Brant) who lived
in the prefabs that were knocked down to make way for the new estate -
I'm not sure whether it was an improvement or not. My only other memory
of the Golf Links was during 1972, when I was working as a gardener for
the council and used to tidy up the flower beds (they were mainly
trampled mud). In my breaks, I'd go and see Sue Broome and her mother
for tea and a chat (can't remember the name of the block but it ran
along the Greenford Road side of the estate). ... more >>

My wife's brother and his wife
have lived at Prestwick Court on the Golf Links Estate for more than 40
years (I believe that is right) and my wife's late sister also lived
there in a prefab. That prefab was the scene of my wife and I's
receprion after our marraiage at Ealing Registry office on the 23rd
February 1957!
The other thing about this area was the Mill Pond where we used to go to catch
fish, all kinds of newts and collect our frog spawn. We also used to
find many golf balls in the bushes. In the winter we also went skating
on the pond! ... more >>

I was born and lived in Marlborough Road for 22 years. I attended
Western Road Primary school from 1944 to 1950. Neighbours/schoolmates:
Carol Gandy, Margaret Hassel, Pamela Murrels. Peter Crane, Diane Peck,
Leslie Wicks, Geoffrey Hicks, Gerald Shelly. Other classmates: Janet
Watts, Victor Higgins, Victor Harris, Maureen Harris, Pamela and
Margaret Musson, Harry and Spencer Shaw, Raymond Lester, Keith
Ballinger, Kenny Turnbull, Lorna Furnell, Michael Bradley. I moved on
to FEATHERSTONE ROAD COUNTY SECONDARY BOYS SCHOOL, and played in the
school brass band (1952 - 1954) under the guidance and terrific training
of Kenneth Cook. Mr. Downs was the Headmaster. School mates there:
Leonard King, Alan Hunt, Barry Rodgers, Gordon Crosby. Barry Day, David

I have only just spotted the
reference to Mr " Dickie" Downes, one time headmaster of Featherstone
Road School. I knew him as CO of 1846 Air Training Corps-I joined in
1943, and left for National Service with the RAF in 1946.
My lasting memory of him was his large girth, and his habit of leaning
back in his office chair-I was sure he would fall backwards, bit never
did.

Any contacts would put a smile on

opening as a new school). Dickies Downes was a hard but fair master.
Remember, he had mixed-culture students to deal with, which was
relatively new and pretty
tough in those days. Classmates included Colin Walker, Mick Ager, Paul

Terry, thanks for the reply. I
can remember you (sort of) living next door to Maurice. I lived around
the corner in Greenford Avenue. Unfortunately most of the stuff that I
can remember tends to be in black and white rather than the full colour
that it should be. It is one of the side effects of losing contact with
people for so many years. Your reply has helped in filling in some of
the detail. Good luck in Spain.

Dormers Wells Secondary School

I was a pupil at Dormers Wells from 1960 - 1964. I started off in class
GC1 but got 'sent down' to Class 1B due to not-so-good exam results and
stayed in the B stream until I left school and Class 4B in March 1964.
In those days pupils could leave school at 15 years of age. Fortunately I
was lucky enough to have had a wide circle of friends at Dormers, I got
on OK with most of the teachers and do not
regret any of my days at Dormers. Playing hooky was boring, being at
school led to far more opportunities for fun although I don't think we
were supposed to view school in that way. I would be pleased to hear
from anyone who knew me from that time. ... more >>

What a shock to read some

I don't know if you remember me, I used to hang around with Shindy

bumped into her years later - yeah she was beautiful (probably still
is) anyway she was doing some modelling. I don't know what's happened
to her now. Featherstone
was a wicked laugh! Anyone remember the lovely Mr D Jones - all the
girls would checking him out! What is everyone else up to? Does anyone
know who Im even chattin about? Anyway, hope I've jogged someone's
memory. By the way, Drama with Mr Hammond was a laugh, there were some
safe teachers. By the way if there are any Pakistanis - from Southall
who have sometime to spare can I interview you? I'm doing research on
Pakistanis from Southall and their leisure and tourism experiences and
attitudes. I'd appreciate any help or comments from anyone interested.

I was interested to read Janice's
list, although I left North Road School in 1940.It was the name Betty
Rosoff that caught my eye-not a common name. Did she live in Shelley
Crescent. Sheila(Gay) Rosoff married my friend Howard Pullen ~1956. They
emigrated to South Africa in the early 70's, but returned to the UK ~10
years ago. They now live in Basingstoke. I know that Gay has a younger
sister!

A memory has come back to me from
the mists of time! A famous artist, Harry Rowntree, lived in Southall
pre WW2.About 1937/38, he came to the school, and kept the whole school
enthralled one morning as he did a number of charcoal sketches. These
were subsequently framed, and hung in the hall in my time there. Does
anyone know if they are still there??

Many of the North Road veterans
will remember being taught by Arthur Russell and probably appeared in
many of the school plays that he produced. You will be pleased to know
that he is still about as is Molly (Newbury)Russell. They would be
pleased to hear from any of you. I would be pleased to pass on any
messages sent via "Nowhere". Personally I did my time at North Road
1934- 1937 under the care of Miss Chapple,Mr Payne,Miss Headdon (Mrs Hanvey). Also serving were Miss Mills, Miss Dry, Miss Bush etc. ... more >>

Hello Ron,well,well,well,how
wonderful to receive your message regarding Arthur Russell and Molly.I
was in Mollys class at North Road School in 1950 a Miss Roberts I recall
being the teacher. in fact I used to walk home with Molly to her home
in Telford Road as I lived in the prefab estate just around the corner.
When Molly left england, I often used to stop and chat with her mother
when she was in her front
garden, lovely lady.Molly may remember me as I was the goalkeeper in
the school football team, under those great managers, Mr Rogers and the
Headmaster Mr Blanchard. As for any plays Arthur produced, I was no Larry
Olivier so the best he could ever offer me was as a scene shifter in
his production of A Midsummer Nights Dream.I do hope you are all in good
health, and are having a happy life.Look forward with geat joy to
hearing further news, kind regards ... more >>

Have just spotted Ron Russell's entry of 5.1.04.
Didn't Miss Mills marry Mr Payne? She as I recall taught art. I was also
taught by Miss Chapple and Mrs Hanvey, but not by the fearsome Miss
Dry! There was also a teacher Mr Taylor, who very sadly died when I was
in his class.

I have fond memories, even after
all these years, of playing Fairy Peaseblossom in A Midsummer Night's
Dream produced by Arthur Russell. My lines, as I stood holding a
bullrush spear, were "Hence away now all is well, one aloof stand
sentinel". Not exactly the star turn but that small part gave me so
much pleasure. Sadly, my mother refused to buy any photos of that event.
A few years later my brother
Roy played John in Arthur's production of Peter Pan and he also holds
happy memories in mind. The last time I heard anything about Molly and
Arthur was in the 1960s when my parents moved house and found themselves
living next door to Arthur's sister Wyn and her husband Jim. Please
give Arthur and Molly my best regards. Janice Johnson ... more >>

Hello to Sadie Hunt Wooland -
Have passed your message on to Molly and Arthur. Their phone number is

Chinnery and all other spear carriers. I was in the audience for "Toad"

great days?

Arthur Russell's plays at North
Road School were famous. All the junior schools in the town sent
audiences. I played the policeman in Toad Of Toad Hall. My line was "He
called me fat face!" Mr Russell's use of classical music like The
Nutcracker Suite was what made the plays unique. He was also an
excellent poetry teacher and sports master. His running off with Molly
caused a sensation at the time.

Better late than never, but I too
was one of the Emblem Players which was formed by Arthur Russell.Never a
very good actress, but always enjoyed it all. I remember we also used
to go on days out together on our bikes. Does anyone else remember Alan
Tuffs, who I think if I remember rightly went on to be a policeman?
You're right, Arthur and Molly did cause quite a sensation at the time
when they ran off
together! By the way, Janice, I'm also on that old photo of Miss Roberts
class at North Rd round about 1949 - I'm the one with the awful
ringlets - and I can remember most of the names. We were all so young
and unwordly then, not so streetwise as today's kids, but we had fun. ... more >>

MISS HOUBEN, MRS FELTS, MISS GREGSON, MR HANDCOCK, MR ROGERS (and
