I went to Southall Tech from 1949 to 1952. I then was an Engineering
Apprentice at the AEC Windmill Lane, now long gone. I would be happy if
any of my old group could contact me. I plan to return to the UK next
year, about mid year, so would be able to visit and discuss old times.

Hello,
I was born in Southall in 1957, attended lady margaret until 1968, the went to Stanhope in Greenford until 1972
We lived at 36 Ascot gardens. If anyone remembers the Ashley name , I would like to hear from you.
Any old class mates out there ?

by judith ashley (Member 10013283) on 9-Jun-2000
I'm Judith Ashley, mother of
Kevin. does anyone remember me as Judith Humphrey of 36 Ascot gardens or
my brother Ron. Anyone remember the VE street party held on the corner
of Dorell Close. or the VJ party held in the Lady Margaret School?
My parents moved to Southall in 1932, from the Edgware Road area of
London. Our immediate neighbours were Mr&Mrs Ledger and Mr&Mrs
Abel
I married Peter Ashley from 71 Cornwall Avenue.
Please get in touch, feeling very nostalgic as I get older!! ... more >>

Hello Judith
I moved to Dorell Close when I was 9 in 1983 and our next door
neighbours were called Sid and Joan (brother & sister). They both
moved to Somerset but visited occasionally. They were such lovely
people, unfortunately Sid passed away a few years ago. I also remember
Mr & Mrs Mayo a couple of doors away, do you remember them?.
Do you recall a young boy who served for the Navy but died during his service who lived on Dorell Close?
I would love to hear about the history. I also went to Lady Margaret Middle School from 1983 to 1985. Brilliant school. ... more >>

I went to Lady Margaret School in

my youngest sister Eve (Evelyn) in 1945 all Simpsons and all from Ascot
Gardens. We were in the middle part of Ascot Gardens and my mother was
one of the organisers of the VE street party.
I was only 12 but played the drums in our own little band and most of the other players were from the Morris family who lived at 37 Ascot Gardens, I believe! ... more >>

I need to clear up a small
mistake over going to Lady Margaret School in 1938. I think it was 1939
when it opened, we went to Dormers Wells Infant school initially.
The old mind is improving through reading all this local information
- Re: Lady Margaret school and stanhope school
by Malcolm McNally (Member 10078995) on 6-Nov-2002
I also went to Lady Margaret
School when it opened in 1938/39, I am unsure about dates because I can
remember gas masks being handed out at LMS to everyone just prior to the
war.
I can also remember that during the early part of the war, the school
was closed to pupils. As an alternative, teachers "toured" a number of
designated addresses to teach some 10 to 12 children who were allocated
to these " centres of
excellences " in their locality for about 2 to 3 hours lessons a day -
as I lived in Selby Gardens, my "school" was in Westbury Avenus. ... more >>

Hello everybody
I was at LMS from the start. Can anyone tell us what date in 1944(?)
were we evacuated to Burton upon Trent? My sister who was also at LMS
would be most grateful!
- Re: Lady Margaret school and stanhope school
by Gerald Simpson (Member 10109152) on 2-Nov-2003
Just in case there is anyone
interested in my last mail. I can tell you that my sister found the
date of our evacuation to Burton on Trent. It was the 14th July 1944.
She found this information from the local Burton newspaper who sent her a
copy of her photograph from the front page! That solves another part
of the family history.

Hello there;
I have only just found this site and have gone mad posting messages. At
the end of the war I used to deliver Newspapers in Rutland Road and had
a very serious crush on a young lady who lived in the second block of
houses on the righht hand side facing down from the bus stop. Her name
may be been Shirley Haywood. On the opposite side of the road almost
opposite was a sidecar motor cycle racer. I lived in Ascot Gardens and had a brother and two sisters. I also remember our Doctor was Dr Nussbaum. ... more >>
- Re: RUTLAND ROAD
by Malcolm McNally (Member 10078995) on 22-Nov-2002
You should read "The Scent Of
Dried Roses" by Tim Lott who lived in Rutland Road during his young days
but his story covers his mother's time during the late forties and
mentions such locations as Rosecroft Road, Westbury Avenue, Rutland
Road, Jubilee Gardens, Somerset Road, "up the top", Lady Margaret School
and so on.
If you lived in this area from 1935 to 1948 you may find it quite interesting

A most interesting post and I remember well the names that you you have

sight of his book - any ideas?
Names of streets that had slippped my mind and now a lot more comes to mind.

TRACING MY FAMILY (JELLYMAN / STOKES / SEWARD)
|
by Marian Jellyman (Member 10001953) on 20-Aug-1999

I am trying to trace my ancestors who lived in Southall from about 1900
- 1960. I have some information but cannot research the IGI as Southall
is not on that.
Is there a local Genealogy Society in Southall?

I may be able to help my cousin
married a Jellyman and I played football with her brother. Both got
married in St Johns. Their mum ran a shoe shop down Western Road. If
this rings any bells maybe I can you.

We know the name Jellyman because
my wife worked with a young lady with the surname Jellyman at Dorothy
Perkins in the High Street. When we moved away to Chalvey near Slough,
my wife's friend moved to Windsor, possibly Albert Street or Albert
Road.

Sorry, I did not make the first
message clear regarding dates. My wife worked at Dorothy Perkins from
about 1948 to the middle 50's. We married in 1957 and moved to Chalvey
in 1964 and Ms Jellyman was still in Windsor in about 1966

I have been trying to trace records for family (surname JELLYMAN) who were christened, married and buried from this Church.
I am told the records are not on the IGI - does anyone know why?
Does anyone know where I can get these details?

WW-II time and later - living in Southall.

I was born in Paddington in July 1939 and my parents moved several
times, finally settling in Southall after my paternal grandparents (I
think!) died. I remember parts of the war - the brick built air raid
shelters in the road, the Anderson shelter in the back garden of our
house on Carlyle Avenue, the Morrison shelter in the living room where
my sister and I slept and frequently bruised our heads !
We were evacuated to Nottingham, and there I started school. On our
return to Southall both my sister and I went to North Road
Infants/Primary and Junior School.
(Remember Mr Blanchard, Principal; Mrs Hanvey, Infants; Mr Rogers -
(Of a new word every week and the slipper if you don't spell it, fame!);
Miss Dors, (Dores?), the teacher who literally changed my life - thank
you, Thank You, THANK YOU!
Both my sister and I sat and passed the 11+ and went from there to
Southall Grammar School next to the park. After two years of misery for
me I sat the Southall Grammar/Technical School entrance exam, and at
the age of 13 started in that boys only school on Beaconsfield Rd.
If any of you reading this remember those days and want to resume
contact with either my sister Pam or me, David - please e-mail me.
There are a lot of names in my past history - I remember some of
them and wonder if anyone reading this remembers the 3-CH or 4-GN
classes at Southall Technical School during the 1955/6/7 era.
(Remember Dr. Holroyd, Principal - "Get me 5 packs of Senior
Service!"; V.C. Wall, Applied Mathematics; Mr Green, Mathematics; Mr
Chant, Civics; etc?)
Here in the USA, class reunions are a big thing - which I had no
knowledge of in the UK. Does anyone think this would be a good idea for
the UK as well? Could we arrange a get together for say, the
"graduating" class of 1957 from SGTS? ... more >>

HI Marion: I was born and lived
in Marlborough Road from 1939 to 1960, and also have many memories about
the war. I would be interested to be in contact with you. Maybe we
can find some old friends we might both know. I attended Western Road
primary school from 1944 to 1950 and then Featherstone Road Sercondary
Boys School from 1950 to 1954. Now living in Toronto, canada.

An unusual incident from the
summer of 1940 has come back to me. One day, I was home from
school(Dormers Wells)for lunch, amd my mother was in the garden talking
to our neighbour. There was the sound of aircraft overhead, but as there
had been no air raid warning, we took no notice. A few minutes later,
anti-aircraft guns suddenly opened fire, and then there was the sound
of falling bombs-then the
air raid warning! Needless to say, we legged it indoors fast. The bombs
fell in the Mornington Avenue and Crescent area, with quite a lot of
damage. How German bombers got that far, apparently undetected, is a
mystery to me. Does anyone out there have any information on this
incident? ... more >>
