Diamond Jubilee by Michael Braden (Member 10097376) on 25-May-2012
The queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations remind me of celebrating the Silver Jubilee of King George V with a class party at North Road school in 1935.-in the huts as I recall

Does anyone know if Jubilee Park was named for George V Silver Jubilee? Having lived in a house about 300 metres from there, I can say that the houses round about looked like they were built in the 30s so I wouldn't think it was for any of Victoria's Jubilees

Hi Fred. I've just tapped into Google "Jubilee Park. Which King or Queen was it named after", and it says that Ealing Council purchaed a site of over 12 acres of former farmland to create Jubilee Park and Jubilee Gardens, named for King George V's Silver Jubilee. There is some more about it if you tap into Google. Cheers!

What an end to the place with many historical associations.TE Lawence(Lawrence of Arabia) joined the RAF in 1922 and was at Uxbridge under the name of Ross.
I did National Service in the RAF 1946-1948. At Easter in 1948, I was taken ill at home(a tummy bug !), and my mother sent for an MO from Uxbridge. I had to go to Uxbridge to be signed off, thus once trod that historical turf.

Mark Mitchard, Westbury Avenue by Jo Mitchard (Member 10274037) on 23-May-2012
Hi, My husband Mark Mitchard is 50 in a few months and im trying to find some school football pictures of him.
I think he lived in Westbury Avenue (he left here in about 1979/1980)
I know he went to Southall Grammar. He used to play football for/at Southall and was a semi pro at Arsenal when he was 14? 1976 time?? If anyone has or knows anyone who has any pictures I would be most grateful. Thanks

A recent one for Heinz Baked Beans.
    Children's voices sang:
" Heinz Baked Beans are good for your heart,
"Eat too many and they make you-"
    The song finished there!

When my two daughters were very young, my husband used to make them laugh when he sang "A million housewives every day lift up their hairy legs and say "Beans means Heinz". They all did a dance together, and had me in fits of laughter as well! Happy dsys!

  • Re: 1956 and years.....and general by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 16-May-2012
I couldn't remember what the correct advert was, so here it is: "A million housewives every day pick up a tin of beans and say "Beans meanz Heinz."

I couldn't believe it when I pulled out a Tiger's tail - didn't even know it was still in there! I thought I'd thrown that away years ago. I've put it back! It was never tied on to our cars though.

With regards to Tony Mercer Jn. my cousin Roy Rowbottom played in the same Ten Pin Bowling Team, which Tony senior sponsored. They were quite good in the league. Think they had black and white shirts?

My memories of the Southall Bowl was seeing Sid James and his wife with another famous actor Sid Taffner and wife. Strange that in years to come my first wife was to make dresses for Mrs James.

Sperry's by Paul Kentish (Member 10270722) on 1-May-2012
I have just found a Sperry's Social Club medal for Lionel Kentish - 'Delves Cup 1950 Cricket'. Does that mean anything to anyone at all...Zeta I know you said you worked there; any thoughts?

FYI - Lionel's had another minor stroke, so I haven't been able to chat about all the info from everybody on this site yet. Hope to in the next few weeks.
Cheers,
Paul.

SOUTHALL GRAMMAR SCHOOL 1947-48 by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 30-Apr-2012
Have just looked at our Southallboard50, and I was so excited to see many of my previous schoolmates, some of whom were in my class at Southall Grammar school when I was there for my two brief years in 1943-45. Hi Pauline

I've always thought that 'floats your boat' is an Americanism and very modern, I certainly never heard it till about the 90's at least. Does anyone else have any knowledge on it.

It's funny how sayings change meanings in different countries e.g. In England if you say "it goes like a bomb' in relation to a car you'd mean it went very fast but in Australia a "bomb" is an absolute heap of a car.

Similarly, though not a saying, in England apparently to pass your driving test one must be able to reverse around a corner and in Australia it is completely illegal to reverse around a corner.

Keith : I think the 'brown medicine' you mentioned might have been M&B, one of the first antibiotics called M&B after the firm that made it, May & Baker. I remember it as a brownish-pink thick liquid and the bottle had to be shaken well before taking, tasted awful.

  • Re: friends reunited streets southall schools jobs etc by Fred Gough (Member 10041641) on 30-Apr-2012
I wonder was it Senega & Ammonia? That is certainly brown & does stink & is very good for coughs, it's the first thing I reach for when I have a cough.

  • Re: friends reunited streets southall schools jobs etc by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 30-Apr-2012
Janice, I think the brown medicine l was force fed was well before the word antibiotics had been invented. I am going back to the early 50's, and I was forced to drink this by the glassful. YUK!!

  • Re: friends reunited streets southall schools jobs etc by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 30-Apr-2012

M&B tablets were not Penicillin, but an early example of the sulphonamide class of drug.
Winston Churchill in one of his speeches in the run up to the 1945 General Election Election, referred somewhat sarcastically to M&B not depicting "Morrison and Bevan."

ROY'S RICE PUDDING supplied by Fred Gough by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 22-Apr-2012
Well, I told you I would make this Pudding Fred from Roy's recipe, which I did. The first one was okay, but was too milky, and wouldn't have fed four. I made that one in a Pyrex dish. However, not to be defeated, I made another one today in an enamel dish, but soaked the rice first, as I used to do, and increased the rice to 50g (2 ounces). Result wonderful. A really delicious rice pudding. Also a... more >>

Do I remember that wonderful bread pudding Janice. You knew it had been made as soon as you set foot in the door, as the smell greeted you. I made it for years for all the family. I won't make it now as I'd eat too much of it. Don't make chips now but do sauteed potatoes occasionally. Keep some frozen ones in the freezer. Oh those wonderful days of all the steamed puddings and pies!

For instance the other day I was listening to a recording of Paul Temple and I heard the phrase "It's out of adjustment" well I have not heard that phrase since the late 50's (I was born 1950) and if our TV was on the blink Dad would say "it's out of adjustment we'd better... more >>

A few years ago a mate of mine was telling me about how he used to go to a nightclub in London and that same nightclub was frequented by Ruth Ellis & he said "Oh yes I used to see her coming in, 'fag on' " (meaning of course having a cigarette). Up till then I'd never heard the expression certainly it was not used in the 60's does anyone else remember it?

Yes Fred, I certainly remember the expression having a "Fag on". In fact, my sister and I (she's in her seventies) were only talking recently about someone we knew years ago, and she said "she always had a fag on". As for the expressions "conked out" and "round the bend" my grandson said he knows them and says they are still used. The words used more frequently now though are "knackered" and "psyc... more >>

What about the saying "Charlie's dead" when someone's underslip showed below the hemline of a dress?
Whenever my friend tripped over something and almost fell she say "Ooo! I nearly went for a Burton".
Another one was "I laughed so much I nearly had kittens".
My mother used to use the words "batchy" to describe someone who was a bit of a "scatter brain".

  • Re: How things change by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 18-Apr-2012
I'd almost fogotten the other two words you don't hear nowadays relating to cigarettes.
Fag-end and dog-end, meaning the end of the cigarette. Some people used to pick them up off the road years ago, especially tramps.

The mention of travel on the GWR from Southall to Paddington reminds me I travelled that route 1948-1951, when I was a student at the Northern Polytechnic. I don't recall any cancelled trains in that three years-the trains were punctual!

  • Re: How things change by Michael Braden (Member 10097376) on 23-Apr-2012
No Denis-the Northern Polytechnic (Now London Metropolitan University) is in Holloway Road.
I used to get the met line fron Platform 16 to Kings Cross, thence two stops on the Piccadily Line. Very handy connection at Paddington, as my train usually arrived on Platform 15.

West Ealing 2 by Zeta Stanley (Member 10256988) on 10-Apr-2012
Does anyone remember a Pub in West Ealing that got bombed, I think there was landmine dropped behind the shops near Marks and Sparks, I think the Irish used to use it, and I seem to recall the front of the pub being boarded up in the front but it was still used something to do with the licence in those days. It was somewhere near BHS and M&S

Glad you mentioned the Catholic church in Botwell Lane Yvonne. I was trying to remember whereabouts it was. We went to the wedding of one of our friends from EMI who married an American serviceman there. I remember how long the service was with all the incense being swung around. Also remember all the rye whisky that was at the reception!

Yes, you're right "The Royal Oak" was in Church road. It reminded me of St Mary's church in that road where we attended several family weddings. It says it is the oldest building in Hayes. I remember the vicar at one wedding telling the congregation that he did not want any confetti thrown about!

  • Re: HAPPY EASTER by Fred Gough (Member 10041641) on 9-Apr-2012
What was the vicar going to do if people did throw confetti, Pauline, annul the marraige?

It's our ancient right to throw rice & or confetti, no doubt the church charged for the wedding!

Didn't even notice Fred! I was quite surprised when looking up at today's situation regarding confetti at churches. With more and more churches banning the use of conventional paper confetti, natural flowers are being used. Evidently, acres of purple, pink, blue and white flowers are grown to produce natural confetti. They are air-dried in greenhouses before being parcelled up into silk bags or da... more >>

  • Re: HAPPY EASTER by Fred Gough (Member 10041641) on 10-Apr-2012

The references to throwing rice at weddings reminds me that when I was a small boy I thought rice meant rice pudding!(Well, there's a thought!)

  • Re: HAPPY EASTER by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 11-Apr-2012
When we were young Michael during the war, rice was one of those items that was rationed. Rice pudding was a rare treat, and there was always a fight to see who would scrape the dish out. We never ever threw it at weddings then.

My mum baked her rice pudding with nutmeg in, and I followed suit when I was married. When I first looked at your recipe Fred, I thought 600mls seemed a hell of a lot of milk, but it's only just over a pint! Pauline: I have suddenly-and belatedly-realised that Old Johns Bookshop is what my contemporaries and I termed "The Box of Tricks."

Mind you these days I rarely visit it because all the re-connecting with friends happened a few years ago when FR was 'hot'. I mean we've all had the reunions, scores settled, schoolboy/girl crushes revealed and teachers good and bad remembered.

The programme I used to dash home from school to listen to was "Toytown" with Larry the Lamb, and Ernest the Policeman and Dennis the Dachshund - a German sausage dog. "The Man in Black" with Valentine Dyall was another programme at night - usually very scary!

  • Re: Radio in the War Years. by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 22-Mar-2012
Forgot to mention 'Much Binding-in-the-Marsh' a fictional Air Force base. Staffed by the motley crew of Kenneth Horne, Richard Murdoch, Maureen Riscoe, Sam Costa and Maurice Denham. Started during the war to entertain the RAF, as well as the public. Then there was Tommy Handley in "ITMA" It's that man again" We all remembered Mrs Mopp "Can I do yer now sir?"

  • Re: Radio in the War Years. by Michael Braden (Member 10097376) on 22-Mar-2012
Pauline, you have certainly stirred up a few memories. The Valentine Dyall programme as I recall was aptly titled "Appointment with Fear".
Whar was the programme with Charlie Chester?

  • Re: Radio in the War Years. by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 22-Mar-2012
I can't remember Charlie Chester's programme Michael, but I do remember that "Appointment with Fear" used to frighten the life out of me. Too scared to go to bed some nights!

  • Re: Radio in the War Years. by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 22-Mar-2012
Another programme we used to listen to on the radio during the war was Albert Sandler and the Palm Court Orchestra. It was always on a Sunday.

  • Re: Radio in the War Years. by Fred Gough (Member 10041641) on 22-Mar-2012
Possibly not during the war but Paul Temple.

At least until a couple of years ago Peter Coke who starred in the lead & title rols was still alive aged 90 something.

  • Re: Radio in the War Years. by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 22-Mar-2012
To add too the list Dick Barton & In Town Tonight.

  • Re: Radio in the War Years. by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 22-Mar-2012
Denis, it's strange you mentioning "In Town Tonight", because I started humming the tune after Yvonne listed it, and then found two
You-tubes - one by Henry Hall & the BBC Dance Orchestra (1934) of "In Town Tonight" and another one by Roy Fox. They are both on HMV gramophone records, and you can see the record going round as well. Wonderful to hear it again after all these years. It was quite nostalgic.

  • Re: Radio in the War Years. by Zeta Stanley (Member 10256988) on 22-Mar-2012
Was Donald Peers on during the war, I think it was on a sunday, and of course Jean Metcalf in Forces Favourites.

  • Re: Radio in the War Years. by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 22-Mar-2012
I think Donald Peers was in the forces during the war and sang to the troops. It was later that he had his own programme on a Sunday night. My friend and I went to see him in London among hundreds of screaming teenagers.

  • Re: Radio in the War Years. by Bob Burnard (Member 10252769) on 23-Mar-2012
I think you are highlighting our problem, what programmes were being relayed in the actual war years, and the popular programmes mentioned only took up a fraction of broadcasting time.

  • Re: Radio in the War Years. by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 23-Mar-2012
Yes, it is a job to remember programmes which were actually broadcast during the war. I have just been looking in Google at "It's all for you on Radio 2 WW11 Home Service", and there are quite a few that I had forgotten. Desert Island discs, the Radio Doctor - Dr Charles Hill, Hi Gang with Ben Lyon, Sincerely Yours with Vera Lynn, plus the daily morning and lunchtime bulletins by Alva Liddell etc. Hope this helps.

Yes Fred, you were quite right about Paul Temple being on during WW11. "Paul Temple, first saw the light of day in the late 1930s. Toys of yesterday. by Fred Gough (Member 10041641) on 8-Mar-2012
Does anyone remember the plastic lemon shaped containers that used to have lemon juice in them, well they made fantastic water pistols afterwards & much better than the ones you'd buy in the toy shop in the arcade, the triggers of which always broke before long.

I also remember aluminium catapults that were incredibly powerful and stink bombs. I remember one Saturday morning after pictures at ... more >>

Yes Fred, I remember the lemon-shaped containers. I also remember the "stink bombs". I didn't ever buy any myself, but we had a prankster of a brother-in-law. All the family remembered the occasion well. We had all gathered at my mother-in-law's house one Saturday evening, and after the usual putting the world to rights with politics, and generally having a lovely evening together, Birchie (my bro... more >>

Hi Fred i remember thoes catapults think they where made by Milbro cast aluminum frame, also remember the lemons great fun & and the stink bombs Oden Saturday mornings

  • Re: Toys of yesterday. by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 9-Mar-2012
    Michael i think your right

  • Re: Toys of yesterday. by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 9-Mar-2012
Regarding stink bombs - they are still being sold on the Net, containing ammonium sulphate!

  • Re: Toys of yesterday. by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 9-Mar-2012
I should have said "Ammonium Sulfate".

  • Re: Toys of yesterday. by Fred Gough (Member 10041641) on 9-Mar-2012
I think you were right in the first place Pauline as I have always spelt it Sulphate and if the Americans are having another go at corrupting our language then we're not going to follow them.

  • Re: Toys of yesterday. by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 9-Mar-2012
I think the plastic lemons were called "Jif", many years later the name of a disinfectant/household cleaning fluid!!

think the lemon shape screw top..juice still in supermarkets...sold lots of for pancake shrove tuesday we have just had,lent..the village still has tossing pancake races....,and useful for fish,,

  • Re: Toys of yesterday. by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 9-Mar-2012
The thread is headed "Toys" and the toys l remember were made by Hornby, Chad Valley, Tri-Ang, Dinky, Brittans (soldiers and farm animals) and later, "Matchbox".

  • Re: Toys of yesterday. by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 9-Mar-2012
Ah yes, toys! The toy I remember the most in my childhood was a kaleidoscope - a prism of mirrors reflecting the most beautiful shapes of coloured glass etc. Also loved a metal coloured humming top which you could spin for ages, and a wooden hoop with a stick which kept you on the run. Kites were also good fun when there was a good wind blowing.

  • Re: Toys of yesterday. by Fred Gough (Member 10041641) on 10-Mar-2012
Yes Keith & IMHO, Tri-ang had the edge over Hornby when it came to train sets. Oh the fun to be had with one's first electric train set.

    Denis,
I do remember seeing the UAT/TAI SNCASE Sud Est Armagnac at "LAP"! . I think you told me the plane reg., and the date. I would have gone to visit Rochford soon afterwards. I had packed up spotting soon after the "pipers" were arriving at LAP North being airlifted by Pan Am crates. The G-R registrations were in their infancy. Does that help define the era/year??.

  • Re: Toys of yesterday. by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 12-Mar-2012
Keith i think your spotting days where a bit after mine i stopped approx 1957/8, moved north 1960 but kept in touch from afar

  • Re: Toys of yesterday. by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 12-Mar-2012
Yes Denis, l forget the year the Armagnac suddenly turned up at LAP (a year or so ago, somebody told me on here - reg & date, I thought it was you) '58 perhaps, but I'd just started than and stopped in about '63

  • Re: Toys of yesterday. by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 13-Mar-2012

Went to W Waltham Denham Elstree and Panshangar regularly. but Fairoaks always eluded me. 25 years ago I was living under the flightpath at Shoreham (it had hard runway put in around 1980)

  • Re: Toys of yesterday. by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 14-Mar-2012
Cannot remember Chipmunks @ Denham. But have no records as parents threw out all stuff including full album of 1950s baggage labels(!!) (I was devastated) Preferred Elstree to Denham as more visiting stuff there then. Was at Gatwick most Sundays though as incredible variety in early '60s there. Best regards Keith

  • Re: Toys of yesterday. by Michael Braden (Member 10097376) on 16-Mar-2012
These reminisces reminded me of some 20 years ago, when I was on a flight to Frankfurt. As we landed, much to my surprise, a short distance away was a Junkers52( 3-engine transport aircraft from WW2) with its engines running!

  • Re: Toys of yesterday. by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 16-Mar-2012
Yes Keith we did Elstree a few times, i think the Junkers 52 3m you saw was the one restored by Lufthansa engineers to flying condition, also there are a number of Spanish built C.A.S.A 52 3Ms around,

St George's is now part of the Southall Group of Churches, comprising St G's, St John's, Holy Trinity, Emmanuel (on the Golf Links Estate) and St Mary's Norwood Green. We have a group service every year, which was held only the Sunday before last, at St George's this year. Not cold there any more, but very warm and welcoming. "There is a green hill far away without a city wall" etc. was one of the hymns we used to sing. I don't remember going there when we were in the Juniors. Perhaps it was because the war was on then.

The recollection of Southall churches, reminded me of King George VI calling for a National Day of Prayer durung the dark days of 1940. At Holy Trinity there was a packed house for Morning Prayer-people had to get chairs from the Parish Hall. The preacher was the Bishop of Willesden.

PHYL - It was lovely to hear that you have actually attended St George's church in Tudor road recently. It was one of those buildings that was always there, and one that many of us associated with our childhood in Southall. With so many buildings that have either been demolished or changed, it is comforting to know that St George's at least is being well looked after, and looks very beautiful.

I remember St.Georges at Easter time when I was in the infants at Tudor Rd. we would go into the Church and sing "There Is A Green Hill Far Away" the Vicar in my day was the Chaplain at Pentoville prison.

Just out of interest Len, what was the name of your Headmaster at Tudor road in your time? Mr Reagan was the Headmaster of the Boys' school in the Juniors during the war, and he was a very strict Headmaster. Not very popular at all.

Hi Irene - was the Miss Smith you knew a grey-haired old lady? She was one of my teachers at Tudor road, but retired while I was still there.
She was a very good teacher, but very fond of thumping you in the ribs as she walked past you if you were talking, and I always was! I remember she told us all about the dangers of smoking all those years ago. I was at Tudor road school from 1936 to 1943. M... more >>

A few more teachers I remember when I was at Tudor road are: Miss Jones, Miss Rumming, Miss Kingsnorth and Miss Green. Poor Miss Green had a habit of extending the letter 's', and every time she said good morning girls - it would become girlsssss! I'm afraid there was a lot of hissing from the class that went on whenever anything ending in 's' was said.

Hello Pauline, I remember a Miss Jones, didn't she take us for Physical training, I remember playing Rounders in our navy blue bloomers with a pocket in them. Also was there a Miss Curtis or was that Townfield I can't remember

Hi Len, I remeber Miss Ball she lived in Delamere Road, on the righthand side I think the house was semi detached and there was a road on the corner but never went anywhere, I have seen since though that the road is open and there are houses where the Davis Timber yard was.

Hi Zeta. Yes, Miss Jones did take us for PT. The only time I can remember was when it was freezing cold, and all the class was out in the playground by that huge pile of coke. She told us to jump about like frogs, in our knickers and vests, while she was in a big fur coat! There was snow on the coke. It's a wonder we didn't all end up with pneumonia.
