The queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations remind me of celebrating the
Silver Jubilee of King George V with a class party at North Road school
in 1935.-in the huts as I recall

Does anyone know if Jubilee Park
was named for George V Silver Jubilee? Having lived in a house about 300
metres from there, I can say that the houses round about looked like
they were built in the 30s so I wouldn't think it was for any of
Victoria's Jubilees

Hi Fred. I've just tapped into
Google "Jubilee Park. Which King or Queen was it named after", and it
says that Ealing Council purchaed a site of over 12 acres of former
farmland to create Jubilee Park and Jubilee Gardens, named for King
George V's Silver Jubilee. There is some more about it if you tap into
Google. Cheers!

What an end to the place with
many historical associations.TE Lawence(Lawrence of Arabia) joined the
RAF in 1922 and was at Uxbridge under the name of Ross.
I did National Service in the RAF 1946-1948. At Easter in 1948, I
was taken ill at home(a tummy bug !), and my mother sent for an MO from
Uxbridge. I had to go to Uxbridge to be signed off, thus once trod that
historical turf.

How lovely to find Emma lived in
Clarence Street Southall. I do remember her often sitting by the wooden

to my friend Mauvine Stevens. She would ask me how my mother was when
she was away convalescing. She must have worked hard as there were a lot

You mentioning the repeat of
"Call the Midwife" Yvonne, made me think about the late fifties when I
had my first child. I can't remember one time when there was anyone
smoking cigarettes in the Ante-natal clinic. I do remember however, that
while one person was getting dressed in a cubicle, that another person
would be shoved in to start undressing! One practice I do remember was
that we always had to
take our own bottle of urine to be tested. As we weren't provided with
bottles, we all took whatever was available in our homes. I distinctly
recall that one lady took a sauce bottle in one day, and the nurse asked
her if she had rinsed it out first! We all had a good laugh at that.
Your bottle was never returned to you unless you made a point of asking
for it back. One time, for some reason or other, the buses weren't
running, and we had to walk to the hospital in Slough from Langley,
which was a fair trot. If we were lucky we were offered a lift. ... more >>

Hi, My husband Mark Mitchard is 50 in a few months and im trying to find some school football pictures of him.
I think he lived in Westbury Avenue (he left here in about 1979/1980)
I know he went to Southall Grammar. He used to play football for/at
Southall and was a semi pro at Arsenal when he was 14? 1976 time?? If
anyone has or knows anyone who has any pictures I would be most
grateful. Thanks

Hello Yvonne and everyone who
contributes to the site. Norwood Green Village Day will be on Saturday,
14th July this year. If you wish, Yvonne, I can keep a table reserved at
the St Mary's Tea Tent on the Green for you and anyone who wishes to
meet up there, as in previous years. It opens about 11am/12 noon and
goes through until 5pm. The Church will be open all afternoon and will
be decorated as usual with flowers and look beautiful. It is well worth a visit - lots of history there. Kind regards to all. ... more >>

Do you remember what time they
closed down Dennis? Just curious. I was only born 1950 so memories
earlier than 1955 are a bit vague to say the least. I do remember the
"Interludes" whereby, for some technical reason I suppose, you'd just

Mention of old TV adverts
reminds me of one for Armours Beans. A man in a suit came up to the
screen and cried "Armours Beans are so, so tasty."
A recent one for Heinz Baked Beans.
Children's voices sang:
" Heinz Baked Beans are good for your heart,
"Eat too many and they make you-"
The song finished there!

Hi All
Very interested, Yvonne, to see the picture of The White Swan on
Southallboard50 it was not only my family's traditional watering hole
(as Grannie & Grandad lived at 77 Norwood Rd) but in the very left
hand corner of the photo you can see the end wall of the house of Tony
Mercer who starred in the Black & White Minstrels Show, I was
friends with his son, also Tony, who I met through tenpin
bowling with him and a number of times we teenagers all ended up going
back to Tony's (if his parents were away) and having these fantastic
parties. ... more >>

I remember the white swan very
well my aunt lived in victoria road and if we went to tea on a sunday.
all the adults went for a drink after tea , and my cousin and i would
sit outside in the lean to outside the salon bar with a lemonade and a
packet of crisp or an arrowroot biscuit, I was nt the only child outside
I think this was normal for a lot of families .i was nt left for long
but it seemed an age. If it was our house for tea it wwould be the plough in north road. ... more >>

With regards to Tony Mercer Jn.
my cousin Roy Rowbottom played in the same Ten Pin Bowling Team, which
Tony senior sponsored. They were quite good in the league. Think they
had black and white shirts?
My memories of the Southall Bowl was seeing Sid James and his wife with
another famous actor Sid Taffner and wife. Strange that in years to come
my first wife was to make dresses for Mrs James.

Wow Yvonne, you have mentioned Belisha Beacons
I had forgotten them, they were everywhere but have been replaced
everywhere by more modern crossings. . How innocent things were back
in the 60's !! . . Cars stopped at a Belisha Beacon if you were on the
crossing, but now everyone has to wait for full blown traffic lights to
operate before you can get across the road, or you can begin to drive off. . What happy times, > we shall never see them again. ... more >>

Penny, although Yvonne has
already told you about the reply to your query about Barrie Mead, the
only reply I can find is the one from your friend Jean Kirby which you
answered on 23rd February 2012. I clicked on "Who remembers Barrie Mead"
on the Short page, and it took me to the sheet where you and Jean
Kirby contacted one another. I'm probably poking my nose in, as usual,
but hope it helps!

I have just found a Sperry's Social Club medal for Lionel Kentish -
'Delves Cup 1950 Cricket'. Does that mean anything to anyone at
all...Zeta I know you said you worked there; any thoughts?
FYI - Lionel's had another minor stroke, so I haven't been able to chat
about all the info from everybody on this site yet. Hope to in the next
few weeks.
Cheers,
Paul.

SOUTHALL GRAMMAR SCHOOL 1947-48
|
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 30-Apr-2012
|
Have just looked at our Southallboard50, and I was so excited to see
many of my previous schoolmates, some of whom were in my class at
Southall Grammar school when I was there for my two brief years in
1943-45. Jean Lethbridge was the first girl I noticed. She and I were
the only two people to turn up outside The Palace in Southall, in the
pouring lane, to visit Kew Gardens. The rest of the class didn't
brave it, but we had a great time. Cynthia Needham, Joyce Nunn, Muriel
Richardson, Patricia Weston (who came from a well off family, and was a
really good looking girl. Madeleine Body and Jean Lethbridge were both
Prefects, and Cynthia Needham, Brenda Allen, Margaret Barnett (who was
one of my best friends at school), Nina Rust and Jill Garrud, my very
dearest friend who tragically died in her fourties with Multiple
Sclerosis. I saw her twice in hospital when she had gone blind, but she
was still the courageous Jill I knew. They were all Monitors, and Jill
Garrud was a House Captain in the White House. I was House Captain and
she was Vice Captain when I was there. The only boy monitor I can
remember was T. Biggs. This is such a wonderful surprise, as I had
forgotten many of my school friends' names. Perhaps someone else may
remember them now they are in print. ... more >>

Thinking about it Yvonne, when I
started at the school in 1943 it was called Southall County School. I
remembered because I was the only one on our Council estate in Northcote
Avenue to go there, and some of the boys living there used to call me
"County cad". Happy days.

Yet another list of SGS (Recess
1948). One new name was Pauline Nickson who lived near Denbys, the sweet
shop in Northcote Avenue. She was an exceptionally bright girl. I often
wondered where she ended up. I almost quivered when I saw the name of
Miss Rochester, the Latin teacher. She was quite a formidable character,
and I'm afraid from the time I told her I thought Latin was a dead
language, when I had
decided I didn't want to take it as a subject, we were arch enemies! I'm
sorry she was ill though. Miss Bayliss, was the Maths teacher who had
come out of retirement during the war. She absolutely terrified me, and
I'd never ask her a question in class. I'm not sure whether Mr
Bloomfield was a Chemistry or Maths teacher, but I do remember him as a
friendly teacher. Mrs Thomas was a lovely English teacher. She was old
when I started there, and always wore her faded long gown, which had
seen better days. We all loved her, especially when she deviated from
the English lesson and related some of her anecdotes. She lived to a
ripe old age in Isleworth, in the next road to my brother, David
Hackman, and he often popped in to see her as she had also taught him a
few years after me.
She always asked after me. ... more >>

Yes Yvonne. Pauline Nickson. I
think you put something on our Site from someone who knew Ella Nickson
(I think it was), and I knew Pauline Nickson, who was in my class. My
sister also knew Ella Nickson who used to give her lots of coloured
ribbons. I know you jogged my memory when you mentioned that Mrs
Nickson, a dressmaker, had some problem with one of her eyes, which I
had forgotten. They were a nice family, and had their grandparent or grandparents living with them in their front room. ... more >>

We used to use hair grips when we
were very young, but for some reason or other my sister Jennifer used
to have two lovely plaits. I used to plait her hair at times, and I
loved doing it, but as you say the ribbons did used to fall out. I
expect that's why Ella gave the spare ribbons to Jennifer.

It's funny how sayings change
meanings in different countries e.g. In England if you say "it goes like
a bomb' in relation to a car you'd mean it went very fast but in
Australia a "bomb" is an absolute heap of a car.
Similarly, though not a saying, in England apparently to pass your
driving test one must be able to reverse around a corner and in
Australia it is completely illegal to reverse around a corner.

Keith : I think the 'brown

antibiotics called M&B after the firm that made it, May & Baker.
I remember it as a brownish-pink thick liquid and the bottle had to be
shaken well before taking, tasted awful.

Janice, I think the brown
medicine l was force fed was well before the word antibiotics had been
invented. I am going back to the early 50's, and I was forced to drink
this by the glassful. YUK!!

Yes, you're quite right Denis
about antibiotics. I don't remember having any brown liquid, but I do
remember taking M&B tablets, which were Pencillin, in the 1940's,
and they weren't very pleasant to take.

M&B tablets were not Penicillin, but an early example of the sulphonamide class of drug.
Winston Churchill in one of his speeches in the run up to the 1945
General Election Election, referred somewhat sarcastically to M&B
not depicting "Morrison and Bevan."

ROY'S RICE PUDDING supplied by Fred Gough
|
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 22-Apr-2012
|
Well, I told you I would make this Pudding Fred from Roy's recipe,
which I did. The first one was okay, but was too milky, and wouldn't
have fed four. I made that one in a Pyrex dish. However, not to be
defeated, I made another one today in an enamel dish, but soaked the
rice first, as I used to do, and increased the rice to 50g (2 ounces).
Result wonderful. A really delicious rice pudding. Also a dded nutmeg. The three tablespoons of carnation milk made it extra creamy. So, thank you very much. ... more >>

I seem to remember egg and chips
followed by rice pudding when we were small, not every day of course! My
mother used to make huge dishes of the stuff as well as good old bread
pudding. Can't have done us any harm, all three of us are in our
seventies now.

Do I remember that wonderful
bread pudding Janice. You knew it had been made as soon as you set foot
in the door, as the smell greeted you. I made it for years for all the
family. I won't make it now as I'd eat too much of it. Don't make chips
now but do sauteed potatoes occasionally. Keep some frozen ones in the
freezer. Oh those wonderful days of all the steamed puddings and pies!

by telling me what it was made of. You can guess what they said!
However, I ate all mine in spite of it. What school were you attending
Zeta when you had to walk all the way home from Coldharbour Lane? That
was a nice walk though. I never liked going past the type of Borstal on
the opposite side where
all the boys were in a green uniform? The stretch of farmland seemed to
cover a very wide area, and then there was the beloved Waggon &
Horses before you got to the cnal bridge over the Grand Union Canal. I
don't ever remember calling that bridge Hayes bridge though. Hayes
bridge to us as children was the one at Hayes Station. Happy days. ... more >>

Incidently he used to be in Neighbours (I have never watched it except

Just found this site and memories
came flooding back. My Grandparents Mr Mrs Weedon lived in West Avenue
across road from lovely Pop Bowden and his family who used to store the
barrow boy "Staggies" fruit etc in his back shed. I still visit the area
regularly as I have not moved far away from Southall nor ever
would.Talking about puddings does any one remember tabioca puddings the
tabioca itself being
thick and gluey unlike the small stuff they sell today. As I came from a
big family with different likes in puddings mum used to do a very large
dish one end rice and the other tabioca. I always hoped for the middle
bit. Them were the days.

Lynne. I lived in Northcote Avenue opposite the Ive family who sold
fruit and vegetables. My sister, Jennifer Hackman, used to go to Tudor
road school with a girl called Weedon. I can't remember her first name

they used to say it looked like something very unpleasant!! Lovely

How things change

I was watching a series of "Foyle's War" recently, and there was a bomb
damage scene and all the neighbours were carrying on working outside.
When Foyle wanted to talk to one of the women, she asked a neighbour if
she would carry on finishing what she had been doing, and the neighbour
said "Right you are." I realised that I hadn't heard that expression for
years. It then made me think back to when
I started my first office job at 14, immediately after the war. I
remember when we went in first thing in the morning, we called the staff
by their surnames. "Good morning Miss Jones" etc. and I was called by
my surname. Christian names were only used by the few of us younger
members. The last job I had (finishing at 65), we used to greet one
another as "Hi ya" if we met in the corridor. Only the very senior staff
got a "Morning." As for the teachers at school, they were never ever
called by their christian names, as a lot of them are now. I wonder
sometimes if this is always a good thing in class. ... more >>

Yes it is very interesting when you hear a phrase on a TV/Radio show that has been left behind by the way language evolves.
For instance the other day I was listening to a recording of Paul Temple
and I heard the phrase "It's out of adjustment" well I have not heard
that phrase since the late 50's (I was born 1950) and if our TV was on
the blink Dad would say "it's out of adjustment we'd better get Mr. Hardy to come & fix it".
Mind you Dad has his DVD recorder these days & if it broke he'd just
go & buy a new one and I'm also pleased to say that he can actually
work the EPG and programme the thing.
On the other hand something that does annoy me is when a phrase is used
in a period show that has only been in use for the last decade or so.
For the life of me I can't think of one now but it used to happen all
the time on Heartbeat and you just knew we'd never say that in those
days.

Strangely enough Fred, I hadn't

It's not a programme I watched regularly when it was on, and now it's
showing again at 1.05pm - 2.10pm. Don't know how long it's on for.

A few years ago a mate of mine
was telling me about how he used to go to a nightclub in London and that
same nightclub was frequented by Ruth Ellis & he said "Oh yes I
used to see her coming in, 'fag on' " (meaning of course having a
cigarette). Up till then I'd never heard the expression certainly it was
not used in the 60's does anyone else remember it?
- Re: How things change

Fred, I remember hearing it in the early 70s, but not since
- Re: How things change

Yes Fred, I certainly remember
the expression having a "Fag on". In fact, my sister and I (she's in her
seventies) were only talking recently about someone we knew years ago,
and she said "she always had a fag on". As for the expressions "conked
out" and "round the bend" my grandson said he knows them and says they
are still used. The words used more frequently now though are
"knackered" and "psycho".Another
two words you don't hear much of now are "in the pudding club" and "up
the duff". They were used a lot in the 40's onwards. ... more >>

What about the saying "Charlie's dead" when someone's underslip showed below the hemline of a dress?
Whenever my friend tripped over something and almost fell she say "Ooo! I nearly went for a Burton".
Another one was "I laughed so much I nearly had kittens".
My mother used to use the words "batchy" to describe someone who was a bit of a "scatter brain".

I'd almost fogotten the other two words you don't hear nowadays relating to cigarettes.
Fag-end and dog-end, meaning the end of the cigarette. Some people used

Janice - Evidently the saying
came from China. The Chinese used to put bridles on geese, but they had
trouble in keeeping the bridle on because the goose wouldn't open its
mouth. So, they put an extra strap over the goose's beak, which became a
"wing wong". It was made by a Mr Wong. One day a young boy put the
bridle on the goose and it kept falling off. The old man, Mr Wong said,

visit patients at the designated times. On OPEN ORDER you could visit

those who were very ill to see their loved ones at any time irrespective

My maternal grandfather worked at
Brentford Docks at some time in the early 1920s he was injured (among
others) when a load shifted and spilled. He spent a long time in
Brentford Cottage Hospital with an injured back, at one time not
expected to walk again, but slowly recovered and convaleseced at the
Railway Union's home in Dawlish. The original Cottage Hospital building
was demolished and another
built on the site, don't know what's there now as the Brentford I knew
has long gone. The Railway's convalescent home is no longer a
convalescent home, as far as I know, but was a fine building in lovely
walled grounds.

The mention of travel on the GWR
from Southall to Paddington reminds me I travelled that route
1948-1951, when I was a student at the Northern Polytechnic. I don't
recall any cancelled trains in that three years-the trains were
punctual!

No Denis-the Northern Polytechnic (Now London Metropolitan University) is in Holloway Road.
I used to get the met line fron Platform 16 to Kings Cross, thence two
stops on the Piccadily Line. Very handy connection at Paddington, as my
train usually arrived on Platform 15.

Does anyone remember a Pub in West Ealing that got bombed, I think
there was landmine dropped behind the shops near Marks and Sparks, I
think the Irish used to use it, and I seem to recall the front of the
pub being boarded up in the front but it was still used something to do
with the licence in those days. It was somewhere near BHS and M&S

Thank you Yvonne and Denis for
the wonderful photos and films. The hayes harlington udc ytube films are
really nostalgic. I have to keep going back and freezing them to have a
really good look. There were two that I found captured the past so well.
The one that we girls used to walk through Hayes town to the left - I
think it was Botwell Lane - to sit in the little park and eat our
sandwiches. There was a
cake shop just to the right of the picture where they sold their home
made cakes. I bought my 21st birthday cake there. The other one was
Coldharbour Lane where you can see the red telephone box and the dark
blue police box quite clearly. Very happy memories. I was sorry to see
that the white pavilion has completely gone now at Spikes Bridge Denis,
and the children's playground has changed, but after seventy plus years,
things are bound to have changed. Good to see the running track is
still there though. Lovely photos and films and beautiful flowers. Thank
you. ... more >>

Glad you mentioned the Catholic
church in Botwell Lane Yvonne. I was trying to remember whereabouts it
was. We went to the wedding of one of our friends from EMI who married
an American serviceman there. I remember how long the service was with
all the incense being swung around. Also remember all the rye whisky
that was at the reception!

Yes, you're right "The Royal Oak"
was in Church road. It reminded me of St Mary's church in that road
where we attended several family weddings. It says it is the oldest
building in Hayes. I remember the vicar at one wedding telling the
congregation that he did not want any confetti thrown about!
- Re: HAPPY EASTER
by Fred Gough (Member 10041641) on 9-Apr-2012
What was the vicar going to do if people did throw confetti, Pauline, annul the marraige?
It's our ancient right to throw rice & or confetti, no doubt the church charged for the wedding!
- Re: HAPPY EASTER
by Fred Gough (Member 10041641) on 10-Apr-2012
Sorry only just read the wrong spelling in my posting, it should be 'marriage'
- Re: HAPPY EASTER
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 10-Apr-2012
Didn't even notice Fred! I was
quite surprised when looking up at today's situation regarding confetti
at churches. With more and more churches banning the use of conventional
paper confetti, natural flowers are being used. Evidently, acres of
purple, pink, blue and white flowers are grown to produce natural
confetti. They are air-dried in greenhouses before being parcelled up
into silk bags or dainty sachets and envelopes. The petals cost £11 a pint. So it says, the average bride will place an order for £50!

- Re: HAPPY EASTER

That's a good idea, natural confetti & then everyone's happy. The vicar can still come round for afternoon tea.

- Re: HAPPY EASTER
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 11-Apr-2012
When we were young Michael during
the war, rice was one of those items that was rationed. Rice pudding
was a rare treat, and there was always a fight to see who would scrape
the dish out. We never ever threw it at weddings then.

29/3/94 Roy's Rice Pudding
-----------------
Serves 4
600ml Milk
40g dry rice
25g caster sugar
Few drops vanilla essence (could also use nutmeg as well)
1/2 oz or 15g of butter
2-3 Tablespoons Carnation
Use a 1 and half pint casserole or baking dish
Heat oven to 150 deg C
Generously grease dish with butter
Pour dry rice into dish with sugar & vanilla essence (and dried fruit if required)
& butter in small pieces over top
Heat milk to below boiling then pour milk over mixture
& stir well.
Place dish in centre of oven & bake for 2hrs
During 1st hour stir each 15mins for 3 times at
last stir add Carnation & then leave till baking finished ... more >>

My mum baked her rice pudding
with nutmeg in, and I followed suit when I was married. When I first
looked at your recipe Fred, I thought 600mls seemed a hell of a lot of
milk, but it's only just over a pint! When I have got all the
ingredients together, I will have a go at it and let you know what I
think of it. I will have to share it though. Thank you.

I'm at it again, reading some more of my brother David's autobiography.
Although we have already touched on some of this, I rather enjoyed
reading it.
"When on nightwork, dad would be coming home at the same time as we were

Thursday mornings were awaited with particular anticipation as these
were the days when dad brought the

Pansy Potter, the strong man's daughter, and many more that don't
immediately come to mind. These were just fun cartoon comics however,
and as I got older I became far more interested in the story type of
comics. The Wizard, Hotspur and Champion, which contained quite long
stories, the only picture being part of the heading. "Wilson" was my all
time favourite, 147 years old and breaking world athletic records in
extremely obscure ways in each story. I can even remember how he was
given the secret of longevity by an old hermit who lived in a cave.
Wilson had to hold the 'Grieve Stone', which weighed several cwt, above
his head for ten seconds before the hermit would divulge the secret of
long life. The graphic detail of how his heart pounded, and the blood
seared through his brain, until he thought he was about to collapse. When
he finally had to drop the stone in a state of utter exhaustion, the
Hermit proudly told him he had exceeded 12 seconds and told him how he
should go about living forever! It was great stuff, and oh how I waited
for next week's instalment. Dad only bought one of these story comics
each week, but I was soon either swapping with my mates, or buying as
many others as I could lay my hands on, but nothing could compare with
my main source of comics which came from 'Old John's Bookshop'.
It was a small corner shop, towards the end of the high street, and
absolutely wonderful. John was a small man, with horn rimmed glasses. He
was always unshaven, with an unlit, soggy, half smoked fag in his
mouth, and always wore the same old stained dark blue army surplus
jacket. He rarely spoke, but just stood behind the counter, looking
scruffy, as did his bookshop. But what a shop. Because it was small,
there was barely an inch of space that wasn't used. Packed shelves
adorned all the walls, from floor to ceiling, filled with dust covered
books of every description, and you had to squeeze round the open wooden
stands c ... more >>

containing more books, comics, stamps, and general bric-a-brac. There
were even objects hanging from the ceiling, adding to the overcrowded,
almost claustrophobic atmosphere. The musty, dusty smell still haunts
me, as I trod those floorboards for several years, swapping and buying
comics, and often selling them to get a few coppers for the pictures or
for fishing tackle.
I firmly believe that
those comics did more for my eduation than any schooling could have
achieved at that time, They nurtured a meaningful understanding of words
and English and fired one's imagination, but more importantly
instilled a desire to read more, and an enthusiasm for more, which

Thanks for the info, Len
I just looked at the Corby Knowhere board and already this morning,
before 7 a.m., 3 of them are fighting each other calling each other
internet trolls etc. Well spotted. It isn't just a Southall Board

infected/polluted the Knowhere boards across the country.
Does anyone know how to alert the board monitors @ Knowhere??

Talking about comics, can anyone
remember the name of the comic (black and white) with a Lord somebody or
other in it? If I remember rightly it was always on the back page. As
for Red Skelton - that certainly brings back some memories. I remember
going to the pictures with friends, and Red Skelton was in a scene where
he was changing his clothes for some reason or other. It was so
hilarious that I literally slipped off my seat with laughing. In fact,we were all in stitches! ... more >>

Yes, I think it was Lord Snooty
Yvonne. "Marmaduke, the young Lord of Bunkerton was better known to
comic readers as Lord Snooty.
Despite his upper-class description he liked nothing better than mixing
with the kids from Ash-Can Alley. These were Rosie, Hairpin Huggins,
Skinny Lizzie, Scrapper Smith, Happy Hutton and Gertie The Goat". Some
of these sound very familiar.
As for that grassy alley that
ran between West Avenue and Northcote Avenue - that was quite scary. It
was always dark and smelly. When we were younger we used to spy on the
neighbours as we went by, and get chased sometimes! Lovely memories of a
lovely Southall. ... more >>

You know i'm not very good with FR Yvonne, but I had this message from them yesterday.
We've been listening to your feedback and we've worked hard to make the
things you love work better than ever before. Your schools and messages
are now quicker and easier to use, to help you keep in touch with
friends and old classmates.
But it's not just old school anymore...
The new Friends Reunited now helps you celebrate ALL of those "Remember
when?" moments. From the heart-warming personal memories, to the
national goose-bump moments we all experienced together, let the new
Friends Reunited take you back to your favourite memories
Don't know about my feeedback as I don't ever contact them!
Have you received this message Yvonne?

Yes I'd say the FR site will take some getting used to.
Mind you these days I rarely visit it because all the re-connecting with
friends happened a few years ago when FR was 'hot'. I mean we've all
had the reunions, scores settled, schoolboy/girl crushes revealed and
teachers good and bad remembered.
I will say one thing though, they've removed all the 'comments' that were on posted photos and
I'm pretty sure most people will not go back in & repost the
comments, so for future generations the photos will stare out like so
many Mona Lisa(s) looking good but who are they?
Perhaps the site was having relevance deprivation & thought 'ooh
let's change something and annoy the members we do have & perhaps
they'll spend more time here'. Can you spot the flaw in this thinking? ... more >>

The programme I used to dash home
from school to listen to was "Toytown" with Larry the Lamb, and Ernest
the Policeman and Dennis the Dachshund - a German sausage dog. "The Man
in Black" with Valentine Dyall was another programme at night - usually
very scary!
- Re: Radio in the War Years.
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 22-Mar-2012
Forgot to mention 'Much
Binding-in-the-Marsh' a fictional Air Force base. Staffed by the motley
crew of Kenneth Horne, Richard Murdoch, Maureen Riscoe, Sam Costa and
Maurice Denham. Started during the war to entertain the RAF, as well as
the public. Then there was Tommy Handley in "ITMA" It's that man again"
We all remembered Mrs Mopp "Can I do yer now sir?"
- Re: Radio in the War Years.
by Michael Braden (Member 10097376) on 22-Mar-2012
Pauline, you have certainly
stirred up a few memories. The Valentine Dyall programme as I recall was
aptly titled "Appointment with Fear".
Whar was the programme with Charlie Chester?
- Re: Radio in the War Years.
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 22-Mar-2012
I can't remember Charlie
Chester's programme Michael, but I do remember that "Appointment with

nights!

Another programme we used to

Court Orchestra. It was always on a Sunday.
- Re: Radio in the War Years.
by Fred Gough (Member 10041641) on 22-Mar-2012
Possibly not during the war but Paul Temple.
At least until a couple of years ago Peter Coke who starred in the lead & title rols was still alive aged 90 something.

- Re: Radio in the War Years.
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 22-Mar-2012
Denis, it's strange you
mentioning "In Town Tonight", because I started humming the tune after
Yvonne listed it, and then found two
You-tubes - one by Henry Hall & the BBC Dance Orchestra (1934) of
"In Town Tonight" and another one by Roy Fox. They are both on HMV
gramophone records, and you can see the record going round as well.
Wonderful to hear it again after all these years. It was quite
nostalgic.
- Re: Radio in the War Years.
by Zeta Stanley (Member 10256988) on 22-Mar-2012
Was Donald Peers on during the war, I think it was on a sunday, and of course Jean Metcalf in Forces Favourites.
- Re: Radio in the War Years.
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 22-Mar-2012
I think Donald Peers was in the
forces during the war and sang to the troops. It was later that he had
his own programme on a Sunday night. My friend and I went to see him in
London among hundreds of screaming teenagers.
- Re: Radio in the War Years.
by Bob Burnard (Member 10252769) on 23-Mar-2012
I think you are highlighting our
problem, what programmes were being relayed in the actual war years, and
the popular programmes mentioned only took up a fraction of broadcasting
time.
- Re: Radio in the War Years.
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 23-Mar-2012
Yes, it is a job to remember
programmes which were actually broadcast during the war. I have just
been looking in Google at "It's all for you on Radio 2 WW11 Home
Service", and there are quite a few that I had forgotten. Desert Island

Yes Fred, you were quite right
about Paul Temple being on during WW11. "Paul Temple, first saw the
light of day in the late 1930s. Temple was a novelist and amateur sleuth
and with his girl friend and later wife, Steve, he solved many crimes,
with all stories set securely in a world of middle-class values. The
first radio appearance of Paul Temple was in 1939 and the episodic
series went on for the next 30 years before switching to television." ... more >>

Yes, got it now Yvonne, thought you meant T V programme. can see my mistake now , it is 708 on the radio.
It is our T V programmes that are on different numbers to you. As we get
the English and Welsh programmes here, plus last week when channels
were updating ,i picked up four French programmes, where the Welsh
channels should have been.

SOUTHALL NORWOOD FISHING CLUB
|
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 12-Mar-2012
|
TOM FLYNN - Hi, my nephew David Sykes has asked me to apologise to you
for the delay in replying to his plea for help. "As a rough timeline, I
joined Southall Norwood in 1963/64, and left in about 1967. Talking
about the Sabeys pits at Stockley jolted the geriatric brain cells. I
think there were three at this time rented by Southall Norwood,Uxbridge
Rovers and Southern Electric Board. I well reme mber
going down there on a Wednesday evening for the midweek competition
only to find I had left my permit at home. I had turned around and was
making my way home when a couple of the old boys from the meeting room
appeared. I explained my problem and had resigned myself to my fate when
I received the pearl of wisdom. "Security is for cars, you are on a
bike", and was then shown a path that split the pits and led straight to
the municipal dump! Still rings true today. If you can't beat
authority, bypass it! Those pits were also responsible for another
eureka moment, when just as I was packing up, a couple of guys I had met
on the coach trips (old juniors or young seniors) shouted me across to
where their tent was pitched. After about thirty minutes of smelling
their weird tobacco, I noticed the king size Rizlas and offered my
excuses. I reckon that my pushbike flew back to Keith Road, Hayes.
Fortunately, I have never been keen on the stuff since." ... more >>

Yes, although it was Woolworths
at Greenford, Yvonne, it wasn't the Woolies I remember. The mention of
EMI brought some memories back though. I remember being told about a
really tough bunch of women - the salt of the earth - who worked in the
Press Room at the Gram, and who all came down on the early train from
Paddington. They all did some really heavy work in the Press room, and
woe betide any unsuspecting
young toolmaker from the Tool Room who ever ventured in there, as they
were teased unmercifully! It's strange though, if you told anyone you
worked at the EMI they were puzzled until you said the "Gram".I remember
when the men were all on their two week shutdown at the factory, their
money was always short as they weren't paid their usual bonus. ... more >>

Toys of yesterday.
|
by Fred Gough (Member 10041641) on 8-Mar-2012
|
Does anyone remember the plastic lemon shaped containers that used to
have lemon juice in them, well they made fantastic water pistols
afterwards & much better than the ones you'd buy in the toy shop in
the arcade, the triggers of which always broke before long.
I also remember aluminium catapults that were incredibly powerful and
stink bombs. I remember one Saturday morning after pictures at the
Greenford Granada we purchased a pack of 3 stink bombs they came in a
matchbox type of container & were made of very fine glass and packed
in cotton wool, well we took one out & threw it over the heads of
the shoppers in the grocery store next door and waited, boy did they
scatter.
Of course I doubt that those sort of catapults or stink bombs for that
matter, quite rightly, would be sold today but we did have fun that day
and we were only boys. ... more >>

Yes Fred, I remember the
lemon-shaped containers. I also remember the "stink bombs". I didn't
ever buy any myself, but we had a prankster of a brother-in-law. All the
family remembered the occasion well. We had all gathered at my
mother-in-law's house one Saturday evening, and after the usual putting
the world to rights with politics, and generally having a lovely evening
together, Birchie (my brother-in-law)
and his wife left on their tandem. They hadn't been gone a minute when
this overwhelming foul smell pervaded the entire front room that the
rest of us were in. We all knew what it was, and also who had 'done it'.
I remember we all scuttled out pretty fast, holding our noses, and then
laughing about it. It was one of those family memories that would crop
up from time to time....."do you remember when Birchie dropped that
stink bomb?" Happy days in a lovely family.

Regarding stink bombs - they are still being sold on the Net, containing ammonium sulphate!
- Re: Toys of yesterday.
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 9-Mar-2012
I should have said "Ammonium Sulfate".
- Re: Toys of yesterday.
by Fred Gough (Member 10041641) on 9-Mar-2012
I think you were right in the
first place Pauline as I have always spelt it Sulphate and if the
Americans are having another go at corrupting our language then we're
not going to follow them.

Ah yes, toys! The toy I remember
the most in my childhood was a kaleidoscope - a prism of mirrors
reflecting the most beautiful shapes of coloured glass etc. Also loved a
metal coloured humming top which you could spin for ages, and a wooden
hoop with a stick which kept you on the run. Kites were also good fun
when there was a good wind blowing.

Yes Keith & IMHO, Tri-ang had
the edge over Hornby when it came to train sets. Oh the fun to be had
with one's first electric train set.

Denis,
I do remember seeing the UAT/TAI SNCASE Sud Est Armagnac at "LAP"! . I
think you told me the plane reg., and the date. I would have gone to
visit Rochford soon afterwards. I had packed up spotting soon after
the "pipers" were arriving at LAP North being airlifted by Pan Am
crates. The G-R registrations were in their infancy. Does that help
define the era/year??.
- Re: Toys of yesterday.
by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 12-Mar-2012
Keith i think your spotting
days where a bit after mine i stopped approx 1957/8, moved
north 1960 but kept in touch from afar
- Re: Toys of yesterday.
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 12-Mar-2012
Yes Denis, l forget the year the
Armagnac suddenly turned up at LAP (a year or so ago, somebody told me on
here - reg & date, I thought it was you) '58 perhaps, but I'd just
started than and stopped in about '63
- Re: Toys of yesterday.
by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 13-Mar-2012

gave the date & reg. of the Armagnac it cam from a

Cannot remember Chipmunks @
Denham. But have no records as parents threw out all stuff including
full album of 1950s baggage labels(!!) (I was devastated) Preferred
Elstree to Denham as more visiting stuff there then. Was at Gatwick
most Sundays though as incredible variety in early '60s there. Best

These reminisces reminded me of
some 20 years ago, when I was on a flight to Frankfurt. As we landed,

transport aircraft from WW2) with its engines running!

Emmanuel (on the Golf Links Estate) and St Mary's Norwood Green. We have
a group service every year, which was held only the Sunday before last,

at Easter time to sing hymns. "There is a green hill far away without a
city wall" etc. was one of the hymns we used to sing. I don't remember
going there when we were in the Juniors. Perhaps it was because the war
was on then.

The recollection of Southall
churches, reminded me of King George VI calling for a National Day of
Prayer durung the dark days of 1940. At Holy Trinity there was a packed
house for Morning Prayer-people had to get chairs from the Parish Hall.
The preacher was the Bishop of Willesden.

PHYL - It was lovely to hear that
you have actually attended St George's church in Tudor road recently.
It was one of those buildings that was always there, and one that many
of us associated with our childhood in Southall. With so many buildings
that have either been demolished or changed, it is comforting to know
that St George's at least is being well looked after, and looks very
beautiful.

and sing "There Is A Green Hill Far Away" the Vicar in my day was the
Chaplain at Pentoville prison.

Just out of interest Len, what
was the name of your Headmaster at Tudor road in your time? Mr Reagan
was the Headmaster of the Boys' school in the Juniors during the war,
and he was a very strict Headmaster. Not very popular at all.

I also went to Tudor Road School
about 1941 to 1946 and remember Miss Smith our teacher very well very
strict but we learnt a lot. Went on to Townfield School.
Also went to Sunday School at St.George's but married at Holy Trinity.
Lived in Berwick Avenue opposite the flats and remember walking over
Spikes Bridge and down Dane Road to the shops. Remember most of the
shops, must have walked that way a thousand times. ... more >>

Hi Irene - was the Miss Smith you
knew a grey-haired old lady? She was one of my teachers at Tudor road,
but retired while I was still there.
She was a very good teacher, but very fond of thumping you in the ribs
as she walked past you if you were talking, and I always was! I remember
she told us all about the dangers of smoking all those years ago. I was
at Tudor road school from 1936 to 1943. Miss
Hannett was Headmistress of the Infants school and Miss Trent
Headmistress of the Junior school when I was there. My sister in law
lived in Berwick Avenue, so we often walked over Spikes Bridge to visit
her and her husband later on. ... more >>

A few more teachers I remember
when I was at Tudor road are: Miss Jones, Miss Rumming, Miss Kingsnorth
and Miss Green. Poor Miss Green had a habit of extending the letter 's',
and every time she said good morning girls - it would become girlsssss!
I'm afraid there was a lot of hissing from the class that went on
whenever anything ending in 's' was said.

Hello Pauline, I remember a Miss
Jones, didn't she take us for Physical training, I remember playing
Rounders in our navy blue bloomers with a pocket in them. Also was
there a Miss Curtis or was that Townfield I can't remember

Hi Len, I remeber Miss Ball she
lived in Delamere Road, on the righthand side I think the house was
semi detached and there was a road on the corner but never went
anywhere, I have seen since though that the road is open and there are
houses where the Davis Timber yard was.

Hi Zeta. Yes, Miss Jones did take
us for PT. The only time I can remember was when it was freezing cold,
and all the class was out in the playground by that huge pile of coke.
She told us to jump about like frogs, in our knickers and vests, while
she was in a big fur coat! There was snow on the coke. It's a wonder we
didn't all end up with pneumonia.
