All the old sweets are coming
back. Went to see the Alan Titchmarsh show at the ITV South Bank Studios
yesterday, and he had an item on some people who manufacture and have
shops selling the old sweets now. Gave out samples of pineapple chunks,
fizz bombs, sour sweets (which everyone said were really sour and
awful!), flying saucers, etc. Was very entertaining and interesting.
- Re: general
by Phyl Hutnell (Member 10234816) on 22-Feb-2012
And, yes, Zeta, they still do
sherbert dabs. We can get them here at lots of places now. Bought them
for our grown up sons at Christmas as a nostalgic treat! And the candy
sticks, which used to be made to look like ciggies, but that's not
allowed any more - just plain candy sticks.

about Woolies when they sold their sweets loose that you could select
and put into a bag. My daughters used to bring some in at times, and
those banana ones I could get really addicted to. They sell them in the

Michael, Spanish wood, I wonder what it would taste like to us now.
you have all mentioned so many of the old sweets, here in New Zealand
they call sweets "lollies", and I'm sorry to say they are not as nice as
the English sweets, we do have shops here that sell English goods but
they are far too expensive, a big "have" really, I get some
occasionally, like Frys' peppermint bars, aniseed balls. ... more >>

sweets again now. I remember Goldswains, Michael. I hated Spanish Wood,

Callard & Bowser dessert
nougat was one of the most gorgeous sweets known to mankind with its
deliciously tasty glace cherries, buried in thick chunks of lovely
nougat and wrapped in rice paper. Ah, that brings back some memories.
Apparently there was also a liquorice version that had black and silver wrapping.
The Callard & Bowser name was bought by Succhard who decided to discontinue production
of this most delicious sweet. So, lets start a campaign to bring back
this wonderful nougat! It might not work but let’s try…
To join the campaign, head on over to the Bring Back Callard &
Bowser Nougat forum and add your name to the list. If enough people join
the campaign I’ll get on to Succhard with our petition! ... more >>

Wagon Wheels are a snack food
sold in Australia, Canada, Iran, United Kingdom, Russia, Malta and the
Republic of Ireland. They are biscuits topped with marshmallow and
covered in a chocolate flavoured coating.[1] The biscuit itself is round
to represent the wheel of a wagon (hence the name).
Wagon Wheels were created by Garry Weston, (son of W. Garfield Weston).[1] Garry Weston worked for his father's
business in Australia before taking over his family's UK business. The
biscuits were first launched at the 1948 Olympia Food Fair.[1] The name
was derived from the fact that the Wild West was very popular at the
time. They were originally marketed as Weston Wagon Wheels.

Hi Yvonne. Lionel's brother,
Roland (Roly) worked at Fairey (Lionel was 1 of 6). Roly drove and used
to deliver Spitfires to various places e.g. Coventry on the day after it
was Blitzed. As a kid, I seem to remember a round building opposite
Fairey's (don't think it was in it). Was it the Arial Hotel? This was on
the way from RAF Watton to see my grand parents in Crawley.
- Re: Anyone remember Lionel Kentish
by Paul Kentish (Member 10270722) on 18-Feb-2012
Hi Zeta. I think Lionel was at
Sperry's late '40s early 50s. He worked in the R&D bit. This
probably came about after he was asked at Southall Tech to help the 'War
Effort' and worked on something to do with the rocket launchers on the
Typhoon or Tempest.
- Re: Anyone remember Lionel Kentish
by Zeta Stanley (Member 10256988) on 18-Feb-2012
Hi Pauline, April was the eldest
girl, I think they both went to Tudor Rd, and then I should think they
would have gone to Townfield like me, but me leaving Townfield at 13 for
another school, I didn't have much to do with them until we started
work and April and I got the 120 bus to work.

Hi Paul, ask your Dad if he
remember Jack Muir, he worked in the Stores, and was there for many
years, and his sister Brenda Muir worked there from 1953 to 59, I will
give you a couple of other names too, Len and Doreen Doran, John
Wheatley, Ronnie Marsh, George Coleman, Jim and Jack Woolley, Mr
Philbey, Mr Griffith, some of them were in the Purchasing Dept. I
remember the job of the Rocket project,
they wanted people to go to Woomera in Aussie to work, it's sad that
Sperry's was pulled down, I remember they had a sealed off unit which
was all top secret, one had to have an identification to get in. All

All this info...fantastic! Zeta, I
will mention names to Dad, though he has dementure following a stroke
2yrs ago. Yvonne, regarding the Polish memorial, Dad had Polish refugees
billeted with him in the war - in fact my God father was Polish - Dad
likes the Poles a lot. My Nan used to go to the RAF Uxbridge Astra
cinema a lot, and Lionel's name comes from 1 of the actors of the day
(forget the surname).

Hi Yvonne, so they are turning
Gillettes into a Hotel, well it will probably make a good one, I thought
it was as fine building, sounds like The Grest West Road will be
unrecognisable in a few years, it always looked so grand.

I was sad to learn that the
Gillette Corner is to be made into a hotel, and have just had a look at

My mum was also in West Middlesex
Hospital Isleworth in the 1940's. TB was rife then, and I can remember
there were a lot of very young women in the ward with her. I used to
catch the bus and visit her in the evening, and once the gates were
opened outside there was a race up the corridoors to get in the ward
first! The thing I remembered was that the young women didn't look ill.

Have just found a Sperry's Social Club medal for Lionel - Delves Cup 1950 Cricket. Does that mean anything to you at all...
He's had another minor stroke, so haven't been able to chat about all the info on this site yet. Hope to in the next few weeks.
Cheers,

end...
I'd like to say thanks to all who sent memories which I was able to share with him - yes Mike, he did remember the assemblies at the Tech.
Thanks again, and have a good Xmas season.

fabulous black gown tripping up to claim her Oscar for best actress in
"Iron Lady" but leaving one of her shoes on the stair. The gallanst
Colin Firth of ("The King's Speech") quickly retrieved it for her and

Yvonne, I cannot remember a
Martins in Greenford but that isn't to say there wasn't one there. I
would say the odds are against it. But I've just posted about Martins
on the other thread.

Looking forward to the Queens
silver jubilee. It reminds me of when I watched King George VI`s
coronation in 1937 on television on a 9inch screen in my uncles shop at
55 King Street. There are not many people alive today who experienced
that.

I went Drayton Manor and Abernethies in Greenford shop (and West Ealing)
both stocked Dr Manor uniforms, , doubt that W Eal shop stocked
Greenford County - never saw Gr County uniforms in Ealing. They did

Yvonne is correct. . . Many of
the larger Tescos have racks or carousels of local history books near
the newspapers and magazines. This has been going on for about a year
or so in Littlehampton which is now my nearest, and some of the books
have local photos that I've never seen before, so well worth a look. .
It is possible that Sainsburys might now be doing the same thing

Denis, you are quite right about
Captain Bryant's Driving School being on the corner of Lady Margaret
Road with his sign (lit up) high on the building, but Martin's Bank with
the Grasshopper sign was on the corner of Greenford Avenue, according
to Len Goddard in our Saxon road thread. The Ideal Tobacconist was just
before there, where I used to get my dad's Nosegay tobacco on a Sunday
morning.

Martins Bank always had a large
golden grasshopper "shop sign" outside all their branches. When
Barclays took them over, (early 1960s??), they were soon taken down, but
for some time thereafter, if you had had a Martins Bank current
account, your chequebook still carried a small black grasshopper on each
cheque in order to indicate that you were originally a Martins
accountholder

It's strange how some images stay
in one's mind. Southall Post Office was a lovely brick built building
which always looked new to me. Something I always remembered seeing was a
sign on one of the posts outside Southall Post Office which said
"Penalty for Spitting £5" or words to that effect. Pity that hasn't been
retained!

So pleased your birds are liking
the chopped up fatballs on the bird table Denis. In fact, when the
fatballs in the container get frozen I put some chopped up ones on my
bird table. The blackbird has got it off to a fine art, and while the
robins, tits, sparrows, etc. peck away at the container, the blackbird
just gets his share from what drops down on to the ground!

NORTHCOTE ARMS FISHING CLUB
|
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 5-Feb-2012
|
When one of my nephews realised that I had once lived in Northcote
Avenue, he was really surprised, and was quite sad to learn that the
Northcote Arms had been all boarded up. He said that the place was
responsible for possibly the scariest moment of his life, and later on
some of the happiest. The scariest was when he entered the room to join
the fishing club, an innocent little lad of thirteen, totally
unaware of the ways of the world! He said he looked around him through
the atmosphere composed of at least five different types of pipe tobacco
at all the fearsome looking guys with flat caps and bicycle clips. The
rest seemed a bit of a blur, but he said he must have been accepted.
Anyway, those fearsome looking guys took him under their wings, and
taught him so much about life. God help anybody with ideas above their
station as those old boys invented the ultimate put you down. He
wondered through my Southall Knowhere contacts if the SOUTHALL NORWOOD
ANGLING SOCIETY is still in existence, as he would be very interested. ... more >>

The interesting bits on fishing
in the canal, reminded me of going fishing with my dad on his days
off. Before and during the early days of WW2, we went fishing in the
branch of the canal that went to Quaker Oats factory. On on occasion we
were very surprised to catch some Bleak-these are usually river fish. We

To join as a junior member. Room was full of the then older generation

eventually they got their own water which was at the back of saby,s in

There was 3 football pitches 2 rugby pitches 2 cricket Middlesex and

I also watched the "Cutty Sark"
last night. What a wonderful programme. I wouldn't have missed it for
anything. I felt so proud of the work all the engineers, carpenters,
etc. did to restore this magnificant clipper ship to its former glory.
What a wonderful insight into the way the wood was being preserved where
it had holes in it in places, plus the gold leaf being expertly carried
out by professional
craftsmen. Now the "Cutty Sark" is suspended, it will have its own sea
of glass and metal underneath. Despite the millions of pounds spent on
its restoration, I would think there will be millions of visitors who
will want to see this courageous clipper ship in all its glory. ... more >>

I couldn't agree more about the
new series on Sunday's BBC1 TV "Call the Midwife". It's a must as far as
I'm concerned. It depicts life in Poplar in the 1950's so accurately,
and the wedding party doing the "Conga" up and down the stairs in the
flats is just what used to happen, but usually at parties, and out into
the road. The hilarity of Miranda Hart, the lanky Comedienne,
desperately trying to
ride her Midwife's bike, and causing all sorts of chaos with her
awkwardness, against her true caring nature as a midwife, and delivering
a breach birth, was really wonderful. It also shows the poverty that
existed in Poplar at that time, but with everybody smoking - even the
doctor! Can't wait for the next episode. ... more >>

Hello everyone, and a belated
happy New Year. I have been reading these messages with interest (I,
too, am loving 'The Midwife'). Regarding a Police Box in Southall, the
only one I can recall was sited at the junction of King Street and
Western Road or, as we used to call it, "over the other side", as
Southall Green was known to us who lived the Broadway side. Some of the
boys in our street had go-carts
made from old pram wheels and planks of wood, and they were great.
Being a girl I didn't have a cart, but I did have roller skates, the old
fashioned ones that clipped over your shoes. Happy days! ... more >>

There was a tardis type police
box at the junction of Ruislip Road East and Greenford Ave, on the

On the Golf-links Estate we lived at 23 Dormers Rise.
Ours was one of three prefabs that backed onto the Golf Course, we had a
green in front of it and the three properties had their own allotments
behind them,to the side were the fields of Snell's Farm and Dairy.
Also remember the large diameter water pipes that were laid through the estate, great play area for a time.

There was also a Snells Farm and

Another lovely episode of "Call

warning Fred when the toffee apples he had been making were found to
have bits of feathers stuck on them and blood from the quails he was
slaughtering in the same place that he was making the toffee apples. He
said that the authorities were after him. Fred soon shot off! The
darker side was when Joe (Roy Hudd) had to have his legs amputated at the knee when his ulcerated legs became gangrenous. ... more >>

Grand Union Canal

I have come across an old "official" canal map. I would date it at about 1955
Starting from the Thames here is what it says, moving up from Thames
lock (lock 101). This is a list as you move north up the canal > L
or R denotes which side of the canal the item is on as you move north.
Where I just say "dock" is a marked bay or wharf on the map which is no
longer named as it was probably already
out of use. Here goes: LOCK 101, L Thames steam tug &
lighterage Co,Lock 100. LFellows, Morton & Clayton Ltd, R Brentford
Whaves and warehouses, R Cement Marketing Co, R Thompson & Norris
Mfg Ltd. Hanwell Flight Lock 90 (Norwood Top Lock) R Quaker Oats Dock,
R Adelaide Dock R Victoria Dock L abandoned dock L abandoned
dock, Bull's Bridge. L Grand Union Canal Fuelling & Repair depot
R Paddington Arm L Hayes Cocoa Co, R Shackles Dock, L English
Electric Transformer Co., L C.C. Wakefield & Co Ltd & English

L Stockley Dock R Dawley Dock R Liddalls Dock R unnamed dock R

Denis , Durdans dock is
difficult to place eactly on this map, but I guess it is not quite
halfway from Ubridge Rd, S'hall to Ruislip Road near the Civil Engineer
pub. The Claytons and Brickworks docks are further north, (both on the
other side of the canal) nearer the Civil Engineer but both still before
the Ruislip Rd bridge

I think the Grand Union has
always been fully navigable (for narrow boats) throughout its entire
length with the exeption of the Slough Arm which was fully overgrown
after 100yards by 1960..It was impassible even for a small dinghy .
.However, I am told that this too has been re-opened for pleasure craft
with a marina in Slough Basin itself, but I cannot confirm this.

As planks and timbers have been
mentioned again, and as there's not much going on the Site at the
moment, I wondered if you would be interested in the following account
of my brother's in the early 1950's:
"Although I received a Grant for Art school, there was not much left for
luxuries, so my first thoughts were to get a casual job in the
holidays, labouring on a building site. I was big and strong
and envisaged no problems whaever. After trying several sites however,
nobody wanted a casual labourer with no experience. As a last resort, I
tried Jsmes Davies, a large timber merchant, situated on the canal at
Hayes Bridge. To my delight, they were paying £5 a day, no cards
required, for casual labour, to unload the timber barges that constantly
travelled the canal. The first day was easy, simply working up in the
huge stacks of timber, inserting small pieces of wood between each large
plank that had been brought up by the labourers. This was to ensure
good air circulation between each plank as it seasoned over the months
or years.
The second day proved somewhat different, as my turn came to help with
the unloading. A day I shall never forget! A crane had unloaded the huge
stacks of timber on to the quayside, and the labourers had to carry
them up into the tall storage sheds.Someone would lift two planks at a
time, off the ground at one end, enabling the carrier to place himself
underneath and find the point of balance on his shoulder. Then you were
on your own. I had never lifted two planks of wood 18ft. long x 9"
wideand 3" thick before, and although I found the weight bearable, had
no idea of what was about to follow. As one walked, the planks began to
bounce in time with one's steps, whipping up and down more violently as
one progressed. Before there was time to adjust one's step, other planks
between trestles also had to be negotiated, going higher and higher
into the storage sheds. So while my planks were whipping violently, the
trestle planks also began to whip up and down. I can only describe that
first sensation as similar to being on an uncontrollable trampoline,
with a bag of cement on either shoulder, each bag with a separate set of
springs! Consequently, my first load went overboard before I was half
way up the trestles!
After a while, one got used to it, and shuffled along rather than taking
large steps. The physical exertion was phenomenal. The regular lads had
their own shoulder pads, made of leather, and as no pads were supplied,

Contunued...."I made do with some
folded cloth. This seemed okay at first, but as the day progressed my
shoulder became extremely red and very sore as the skin became broken
and raw.
When I got up the following morning, it had turned to ulcerated scabs,
and I couldn't even bear to touch it, so I had to report that I couldn't
continue. I got my £10 for the two days work, and was thankful for that,
but my shoulder took quite some time to heal. I also began to realise
the value of 'skilled labouring' and why the wages were so good. It
wasn't sufficient to be big and strong, because at the end of the day it
was all down to experience. That's why the short stocky lads doing that
work regularly were so good at it. But it did dent my pride at the
time. ... more >>

My Dad worked on the canal , ,
, I remember the last "big" barges which came up, about 1960, (these
had to be hauled from Brentford by horse or tractor), rather than the
narrow boats. Somewhere I have an official canal map which names EVERY
dock, bay, wharf and lock all the way up from Brentford. One day

SPIKES BRIDGE
|
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 11-Jan-2012
|
I have been reading some more of my brother David's autobiography (he
was 5 years younger than me) and there is so much about Spikes Bridge
and around there that I thought it might be of interest to all those who
remembered it.
"Summers were idyllic over the canal. Most of my friends could swim, and
it was with great envy that I watched them enjoying themselves at
Spikes Bridge, the most popular
venue for swimming. Many weekends became total social outings, with
whole families bringing picnics, while those who could swim did so.
Barges and narrow boats would be passing back and forth all day, and I
remember with great affection those huge, docile Shire Horses pulling
the heavily laden barges from the towpath. Quite frequently,a really
heavily loaded barge would get stuck under the bridge, where it was
obviously more shallow, and the dear old horse would strain and strain
in an attempt to release it. On occasions it wouldn't budge, and the
bargee would have to wait for the next motorised narrow boat to come
along, and get a tow to assist the horse. Some bargees would throw a
rope to the swimmers, and give them a tow too. It was great fun as the
rope pulled as many swimmers that cared to join in. Other bargees were
not so obliging, and suffered much verbal abuse as a result. One day,
everyone jumped aboard a passing timber barge, and I happily joined
them. It was great fun waving to the people along the towpath, as the
massive old horse trundled along, pulling his heavy payload behind him.
One by one, the other passengers began to dive off, either swimming to
the shore and walking back to the bridge, or swimming back, depending on
how good a swimmer they were. Being the only remaining soul aboard, the
Bargee enquired when I was going to dive in, to which I had to admit
that I couldn't swim. Luckily, another barge was coming the other way,
and I was able to jump on that as it passed, and get back to the
bridge." There is so much more he has written, and after all, it is
history. ... more >>

- Re: SPIKES BRIDGE

This is another tale of my brother's which amused me.
"It was on a very hot Sunday afternoon when it seemed that half of
Southall was over the canal! Most had just come back from the pub, and
were barely able to walk in many cases! Others had brought picnics and
had children with them. Most of the adults were determined to have a
swim, and having just returned from the pub, without swimming trunks,
simply went in in their underpants. The reason that I remember this
occasion so vividly, was that there was a man there with a mandolin. He
was absolutely drunk, but had managed a very pretty tune before
stripping off to his pants, and diving, or rather falling, into the
canal. Others were similarly staggering around in their pants which,
when wet, were not a pretty sight! He eventually came out of the water
and flopped down next to his clothes, unfortunately right on top of his
mandolin, snapping the neck in half! I don't recall the expletives he
muttered, but he turned to me, perhaps because I had been such an ardent
admirer of his playing, saying "Here you are son, it's finished
anyway", and gave me the mandolin. Although I remember feeling quite
thrilled, the mandolin was quite useless, but I took it home anyway. The
next day I answered a knock at the door, and there on the step was the
mandolin man! He had obviously sobered up, and was obviously regretting
the previous days events. He took his mandolin back and very kindly gave
me a tanner! I would dearly love to know who he was, and whether he was
able to repair the mandolin. He must have been a proper musician
because one would never have found such a virtuoso on our estate....or
would you? I'll never know." ... more >>

Pauline they are certainly
wonderful stories of Spikes & the canal but I'd imagine they'd have
to be before the early sixties because the cut was so full of dumped
rubbish by then, that it would have been very risky to swim in it. In
fact about 200 metres from Spikes Bridge (towards Durdans & on the
Park side) is where my mate Kenny & I used to go dredging the cut
with a butcher's hook & a piece of
rope and we pulled all manner of stuff out of it, even a tandem bicycle
frame one day which we promptly refitted with parts from Greenford Dump
and rode it round for a couple of years. It did make me laugh the
fellow in the bike shop next door to The Rumbling (or Thumping) Tum Cafe
(we had to get tyres & tubes you couldn't get those at the dump)
told us we'd have to get special wheels because of the weight of 2
people but of course we were only two kids & light weight at that so
we never had a problem. Even today I still have a tandem and I've only
ever put ordinary wheels on it. I do wish though that I'd known those
much earlier days in Southall. ... more >>

Yes, you're quite right Fred. My
two brothers would have been swimming in the 'Cut' in the 1940's. Having
said that, Bob, my eldest brother, who was a very strong swimmer, dived
off Spikes Bridge and ripped his chest open on a submerged bike. So,
after walking home with my other brother David, an ambulance took him to
King Edward's Hospital to be stitched up! Although we were 'free
spirits' in our
childhood, there are quite a few things that my daughters didn't ever
have to suffer in the sixties. Although my dad used to mend all of our
shoes (he was an apprentice with a cobbler before he became an
engineer), I csn still remember having to go to school with a hole in
the sole of my shoe, and putting a piece of cardboard in from a Shredded
Wheat box until it was my turn to have my shoes mended! This was quite
typical in our days. I dearly loved living in Southall in our childhood,
and have some wonderful memories. ... more >>

young boy in Northcote Avenue (again I won't mention his name) who fell
off his bike onto newly laid tar, and eventually died of tetanus. Apart
from his fsmily, it upset the whole community. ... more >>

All this has brought back a very
old memory. I was at Southall Tech 1942-1945. On sports afternnons, if
we weren't going swimming, we went to our sports ground. This was
reached by going up the Uxbridge Road, crossing the canal, then not far
sfter this we turned right to teach the sports ground. If we had cycled
there, we took a short cut home. This involved crossing a number of
roads by connecting alleys, finally coming to Spikes Bridge-thence home. ... more >>

A further memory of Southall
Tech's Sports ground. During WW2 adjoining the sports ground was a
Searchlight battery. On one sfternoon, the ATS girls turned out in their
PT kit, resulting in wolf whistles ftom us. The acconpanying teacher
was Mr FK Hughes, who reprimanded us for "ungentlemany behaviour" !
- Re: SPIKES BRIDGE
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 15-Jan-2012
After my brother's ride on the Timber Barge at Spikes Bridge he wrote the following:-
"I was just about nine years old at that time, and desperately wanted to
learn to swim in order to join in with the others, instead of missing
out on all this summer fun. To cut a long story short, we often used to
go to Southall or Heston Swimmimg Baths, and I vividly remember learning
to do the dog's paddle at
Heston. I could only manage about half a width, which I suppose is
roughly thirty feet or so. Anyway, I was so thrilled at this fantastic
achievement, that I raced back home, and over the canal, where all the
older lads were swimming, including my elder brother Bobby, who was a
very capable swimmer. I had no intention of attempting to swim in the
canal, but simply shouted at my brother, "Bobby, Bobby, I can swim." His
reaction took me totally by surprise, as he replied, "Well swim across
there then", and pointed at the canal, where everyone else was enjoying
the water. He obviously realised my apprehension, and followed up with
"Go on, and I'll give you a tanner." Although a tanner was a great
incentive, I was petrified, but changed into my swimming trunks anyway. I
looked carefully at the distance across the canal, trying to convince
myself that it wasn't as far as the half a width at the baths The most
terrifying part was getting into the water, and feeling nothing under my
feet. At the baths I could stand up, but here I simply had a slippery
moss covered rock to cling to. With everyone watching, I finally had to
push away from the rock, and off into the canal, the very first time in
deep water. It seemed an eternity, but slowly the opposite bank got
nearer and nearer, until I actually touched home, and clung to the
equally slippery wooden boards on the other side. This was one of the
most ecstatic moments of my life. Not only could I swim, but I could
join in with the rest of the fun that had been denied me for so long,
until now...and I'd won a tanner! Although I had never been a good, or
confident swimmer, at long last,I didn't have to watch in envy, as
everyone else enjoyed all that fun during the summer."
I almost cried when I read this, but that was my brother who never gave in.

Yvonne I think you are wrong about the cycle track.
The area to the west of Greenford Avenue at the junction of Ruislip Road
East was my school's playing field (Drayton Manor), and the one the
other side of the Bridge Avenue footpath was the Brentside one, so they
were never public cycle tracks in my time (the 1950s)

Yes for me Spikes Bridge was
always a park that sat at the heart of Southall if not geographically
then practically because not only did you go there with both primary
& secondary school for sports it was a playground from toddler to
teenage stage and you can't say that about Southall Park because even
though the Grammar School is next to Southall park we never once went
there for amy reason with our
teachers. That cinder running track alone made Spikes a special place
and from the pavillion watching my cousins play cricket on a Sunday
afternoon before going home to my Aunt's house in South Ave Gdns for tea

Yes didn't those slides go really
well when you put candle wax on them, you'd come flying off at the end
but be ready to stand up or you'd be flat on your backside. Of all the
playground equipment I think the witches hat roundabouts could do the
most damage though because not only did they go round they also swung
across & up. I don't know if we are the same age Yvonne but I was

by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 2-Jan-2012
You talking about the dangers of
the witches hat roundabout in Spikes Bridge playground Fred, reminds me
of the big swings there. It was quite common for the boys to stand up on
those swings and compete to see who could get the highest. I hated
watching them. One day, one of them actually went over the top of the
bar. I didn't actually witness this, but the swing was all caught up at
the top, and the word
soon spread about the incident. I would think it gave someone a really
nasty shock! They could have been killed. As for the sports at Southall
Grammar school. I was only there from 1943-1945, as I had to leave to
earn my keep. My brother David and my sister Kathleeen were luckier and
both went there later. We held all of our sports days in our wonderful
playing fields. We never went to Spikes Bridge track while I was there,
probably as it was wartime as well. My friend Jill Garrud and I always
competed in the 100 yards and she always just 'pipped' me. I have a
feeling that the playing fields were sold off years later? ... more >>

- Re: uk and abroad all members

Yes, you're right Yvonne, it
looks like soft tar in that playground. I have seen it in other
playgrounds when my grandchildren were young. Like you, I can still see
all the equipment in that park, and the slide was certainly one of the
main attractions. I'd forgotten about the candle wax making it more
slippery, but can still see that wonderful golden colour. I also
remember when a small child appeared
at the top of the slide and was too frightened to come down. All the
kids behind her were getting fed up with waiting, so in the end I had to
push past them all waiting on the steps and tell her I would come right
behind her and hold her as she went down. It still took some
persuasion, but we did slide down together in the end. Don't know who
was supposed to be looking after her! The rocking horse was also another
nice one, until the boys got on it and then it went manic! ... more >>

A Question for Fred Gough,
Thinking back to the bowling alleys days, can you remember any names of
the people who used to work behind the control desks, I know Ian Massey
was one, Pauline another, at the moment can't think of anymore, any
ideas.

Well Graham I'll make an attempt
at it. There was a Dave (or Brian) Gardener and of course who could
forget Dave Gahan and was there a Ken?
You mention the repellent Massie but wasn't he down the back with your
lot the engineers including Dave Drury. On second thoughts perhaps
Massie slunk between the front desk & down the back.
By the way Michael West although he didn't work there, he was
very much part of the place, I did hear some news of him (via Maureen
West a few years ago) in that he'd had a pub for many years but got out
of it after a particularly nasty fight one time.
Do you remember Roy Rowbottom, Dave Blanchard and the girlfriend of Mick (or was it Tony) Carole?
I did have to laugh at myself the other day, I was on a tram going down
our famous (at least in fashion circles) Chapel St & went past our
local bowling alley and saw a security guard outside the place &
said to myself "huh, in our day we never needed security staff at a
bowling alley" but of course later in the day I chuckled to myself when I
remembered we did in fact always have 2 bouncers at Southall Bowling
Alley, one I've mentioned before was a cousin of Adam Faith, there was
another grumpy one called Ernie & yet another who was by day a
prison warder. ... more >>

Thank you Yvonne, the videos of
Osterley Park are lovely. I haven't seen all of them yet. That must have
been hard for the wildlife and the horses to feed during the snow and
that icy weather. Although we visited Osterley Park when we were young,
picking bluebells, I can't think for the life of me how we got there!
I've got a vague picture in my mind, and that it was a long walk to the
woods, but that's all.

I've noticed over the last few
years that the birds used to stay on the birdtable all together, pecking
away quite happily. Since the advent of the Sparrow Hawk (who I have
watched devouring a whole Collared Dove after pulling all the feathers
out), they now just swoop down for a quick piece of food, then off
again! The Wood Pigeons are the only ones who are braver. Cats are also
another predator, but
not so many about now that the garden foliage has disappeared. My
husband used to say, "Well it's just like McDonalds out there." I have a
very large water pistol which is excellent for deterring cats stalking
birds! ... more >>

I still get plenty of sparrows,
and they all frequent my Barberry Bush which is so dense and prickly

table. I watched him one day from my kitchen window and as he tried to
catch a fleeing sparrow he just hit the bush and almost bounced off!

I looked out of my window this
morning Fred, and saw a blue tit and a robin pecking away at the Fat
Ball in my garden. I hung it very close to my Barberry bush as they
weren't very keen on it when it was on another tree which exposed them
more. When my grandson asked me what I wanted for my 80th, I said "A Fat
Ball Holder". He fell about with laughing, but as I told him, you don't

Looking at the new Spikes Bridge
reminds me that when we were kids in the 1940's, we used to walk along
the outside of the old bridge as it had a metal strip wide enough for us
to stand on. The bars of the railings were also wider for us to hold on
to.It makes me shudder to think of it now!
- Re: log in problem
by Fred Gough (Member 10041641) on 1-Jan-2012
Yes it works ok with the space in
it but the original had no space. So sad to see the pavillion gone, it
was a lovely building. The new Spikes Bridge is very utilitarian but
does not have the romance of the old one, however on a brighter note the
towpath looks to be much better and very appealing to cyclists.

Yes, I realised the second time
it had a space in it, but I had typed photostream wrong. It was very
late though, and I'd only had a cocoa! Thank you Denis. It's a shame
about the Pavilion, but I can still see it all in my mind's eye, with
the Bowling Green opposite, high up, so that you could only see a half
of the lady and gentlemen bowlers in their uniforms - all with hats on,
and all the beautiful roses at the bottom that we girls used to make scent with. It never did smell of scent though. ... more >>

Good to read about the proposed
plans for Spikes Bridge Park (or the Municipal Sports' Centre) as we
used to know it by. That park was a godsend to all the children in the
vicinity during my childhood. None of us had much money, but the park
was somewhere we could all let off steam, running, playing rounders, in
the playground, etc. etc. Perhaps though, with the advent of the
Internet and the many
games now available to all, it has not quite the same attraction? Having
said that, it seems that cricket is still played in the Park. ... more >>

Happy Christmas to everyone

Just wanted to wish everyone on this wonderful Southall Knowhere site
of ours a very Happy Christmas. As there are lots of Aussies on the
site, and Brisbane is often mentioned, I often think of my cousin, Jean
Lovell, whom I lost contact with many years ago. Her son Robert Lovell
left a message on my Friends Reunited on 4th February 2005, before I
joined the site in 2009. Unfortunately, the contac t
had been removed. He lived in the house next door to his mother. Never
know, someone might know her, but then Brisbane is a very large city!

That's kind of you Yvonne. My
cousin Jean Lovell (married name)single name Tollitt, went out to
Brisbane 40 plus years ago. She would be 81 now. Her son Robert was
already out there, and was living next door to her. Her husband died
years ago. The only thing I can remember her saying that I laughed about
was, every now and then she'd get a bus to a large Casino and have a
gamble day!

Seasons greeeting from me here in Adelaide, Sth Australia.
You are a lovely group but I haven't found one person I actually knew.
Through Friends re-united I found a girl who lived across the road and
we speak on the phone occassionally, She lives in Tetbury, Glos. She
doesnt use a computer, it was her son who put us in touch, but wonders
if anyone is on here that knew her - her name was Mary
Dawson and she lived in Endsleigh Rd, Southall, had a brother Bill and
sister Ann. She is now 84, went to Clifton Road school as a junior.
Hope everyone has a great Christmas.
Cheers Jean xx

Yes, "A Merry Christmas to All Our Readers!"
The first time I read those words was in The Dandy sitting at my
grandmother's dining table in 1956 it used to come out on a Tuesday
& The Beano on a Thursday. Very happy days!
It's really great to share memories & also be reminded of the happy days of Southall.

Well in Melbourne where I am,
we're lucky, we haven't had a power outage for years & the water
restrictions have just been lifted 1st Dec.
Was very interested to read that the bell from the Manor House was given
to the keeper of Southall Park in perpetuity to "be rung at closing
time". I certainly remember the bell it was close to the plant nursery
and I suppose about 50 metres from the gate to the playground.

Watching the BBC1 News yesterday
evening, they showed a "Bendy Bus" finishing its final run. I noted it
was a 207-was that the bus route which replaced the former 607 Trolley
Bus? My only experience of Bendy Buses has been in the East End-Mile End
and Whitechapel Roads.

Just wanted to wish everyone on
this wonderful Southall Knowhere site of ours a very Happy Christmas. As
there are lots of Aussies on the site, and Brisbane is often mentioned,
I often think of my cousin, Jean Lovell, whom I lost contact with many
years ago. Her son Robert Lovell left a message on my Friends Reunited
on 4th February 2005, before I joined the site in 2009. Unfortunately,
the contact had been
removed. He lived in the house next door to his mother. Never know,
someone might know her, but then Brisbane is a very large city! ... more >>

Southall Manor House

Following on from my earlier postings I have now put a PDF copy of "The
Chronicles of a Manor House" by Evelyn M. Barnett on my website.
This booklet does not contain a publication date, but appears to have
been written around 1970, when the Southall Chamber of Commerce took
over the house as offices.
The booklet can be viewed via the following webpage:
http://www.my-ivefamily.me.uk/SLHS/
I don't know if anyone has seen a copy of the magazine Your Family Tree
for January 2012, but it comes with a free calendar and the picture for
October is a painting of Southall Station circa 1912.
