Then going with Mum and Dad on a Friday evening, and when I was a teenager going with boyfriends on a Saturday night. I must admit I was very confused when I first started reading this thread as I hadn't realised that the old Palace that I once knew had it's name changed to "Odeon" when the original Odeon opposite "The White Hart" closed in 1961, and eventually became a Bowling Alley. Although I left Southall in 1954, I still have very strong memories of the old Odeon in the late 1930's and early 1940's. The memo... more >>

Does Anyone Remember Raymond Winter? by Clare (Member 10264576) on 29-Aug-2011
Hello. I am trying to find Raymond Winter born in 1941. He used to help his dad Jack (John) who was a sign writer in Latimer Road. He worked with horses and the last we heard of him he was still selling them at Southall Market. Any information would be gratefully received. Many thanks.
  • Re: Does Anyone Remember Raymond Winter? by LEN GODDARD (Member 10247752) on 30-Aug-2011
The market has closed it has been so for about 3 years.

  • Re: Does Anyone Remember Raymond Winter? by Clare (Member 10264576) on 31-Aug-2011
I've read that it was run by 3 men and when 2 retired, the other decided not to continue with it. Am I correct in thinking that the market transferred to Langley? Many thanks.

There is a Horse Market in Langley not sure what day it is on or who runs it ..just hope it's better than The Southall one for the animals what get sold there..my Father in law worked at Southall had to leave could not stand seeing the cruelty what went on. regards Josie.

  • Re: Does Anyone Remember Raymond Winter? by Clare (Member 10264576) on 31-Aug-2011
Yes I've heard there were cases of cruelty - my dad tells me a story of his granddad seeing a man whipping a horse because he wouldn't get up. When his granddad finished with the bloke he wouldn't get up either - don't condone violence but hey! These accounts of Southall Market have aroused some old memories. On the rare occasions when dad had a Saturday off, he sometimes took me to Southall market. I have memories of men getting a large squealing pig onto a lorry. Also a man near us who had a goat on a lead-the goat was trying to chew the pocket of an unsuspecting man in front of him!

I know this has nothing to do with the ongoing subject Yvonne, but when you mentioned Southallboard 19 there was a photo of Northcote Avenue on there. I wished to myself that I could send it to my sister who lived there as well, and just tapped on the envelope at the top. I couldn't believe it as the facility to send photos is now back!! It has been unavailable for such a long time.

Pauline - My mum says her sister was Pauline Sheppard. Mum was at Tudor Road about 1949 but my Auntie Susan was there 50 - 55ish. Her friend was Beryl Flunder. Mrs Jones was the teacher there. They went on to Dormers Wells and Mum went to Drayton Manor. My Uncle Mikes (not real Uncle but I still see him regularly now) Mum and Dad owned a house in Tudor Road. He went to Dormers Wells too - family name of Rudge.

Thanks Clare. I'm afraid I'm a bit more ancient than your mum - have just turned 80! However, Mrs Jones was teaching there when I was at Tudor road. She was a Welsh lady, and an extremely good teacher who didn't stand any nonsense from anyone, but I loved Tudor road school.

As you say, there are a lot of wonderful historical programmes and concerts and music on there as well as canal walks and matters of interest. Yvonne, I am sure you are right, free papers would have killed off the County Times. Also, with T.V., people took less interest in what was going on all around them. Clubs and societies atrophied away as people just stayed in and watched the TV., which they found more comfortable than joining in things or taking any interest in local news. Sandy-I have a recollection of Grove Terrace which msy ring a bell with Charlie or Pauline.
Early on in WW2, a fsmily moved in who had come from the east end (possibly bombed out?) The family consisted of a mum, and six girls, the eldest one being Winnie, dark hair,~14, and tough! Woe betide anyone who attempted to bully her sisters. They didn't stay too long-may have found accomodation back in the east end.

Thanks Dilys. Trust me to get it wrong. Yes, when I looked on the map of Southall, Cranleigh Park was quite a way from Allenby Road, but the houses that backed on to it looked the same. At least I can tell my sister it was Jubilee Park. Her memory is worse than mine.

@ Mike Hayler - I'm afraid every thread does.

I do remember seeing "North Road Press" as an imprint on some candidate's elction literature once. Is that the sort of thing they did? I have a feeling North Rd Press had disappeared in the early 1970s due to one of the many boom and bust recessions we had around that time

Bus conductors in the 40's and 50's by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 22-Jul-2011
When I was looking at the photos on Southallboard40 of bus conductors in 1961 and 1976, it occurred to me that my memories of travelling on the buses were with a conductor in a navy blue uniform and peaked hat. Pauline, you are right. My dad was a bus conductor, retiring in 1954. He was based at Hanwell Garage, and certainly wore the uniform you described. Part of WW2 he was on the 55route-during the blitz, his bus was damagesd in Acton by a bomb dropping nearby. Mercifully there were no passengers aboard, and he and his driver were OK. Later he was on the 120 route, and in his latter years on the sing... more >>

Hi Pauline - I think the bus conductor in the light coat without a hat would, perhaps, have been in summer uniform. I'm not sure about the London buses but here, in the West Country, the local buses have a platform that lowers so mums can wheel their pushchairs on without disturbing the babies and park them in the space provided. The present buses with their doors have spoiled all the fun of being able to jump on and off the bus at the lights. I sometimes had to run in my high heels to catch the bus at Southall Town Hall if I missed it at the top of Northcote Avenue (I was young and fairly fit. Grabbing the pole and swinging onto the platform gasping for breath, I'd find a seat and my fare and one conductor told me I'd hav... more >>

I had a good laugh at your antics of swinging on the pole on the bus Janice. It also brought back my own memories of running up the length of Northcote Avenue to catch the bus. You, like me, lived right down the bottom of the road, and it was no mean feat with high heeled shoes on. The 'wedge' shoes were the worst, as you were so high up in them that you almost fell off! At least waiting for a bus... more >>

My father was a bus conductor then a driver attached to Southall Garage. They wore a white cover over the top of the peaked cap and remember my mother saying they had to be kept white and fresh looking.
He died 5/11/53 driving a 105 in Mornington Road, Greenford.

Has the format changed on everybody's Southall Knowhere Subject 1-20? There are no margins on mine, and the script to the right hand side disappears off the page. Although I can still use the slider at the bottom, I don't normally have to do this. This was ok until last night. From Subject 21 onwards everything is ok. HELP!

There was Lily, Flo, Doris, Pat and a boy who passed away quite young, and who's name escapes me at the moment. Pat was the one I knew best when we were teenagers. Sadly she died many years ago and I've lost track of all the others. I wonder if Sally Scarbrow was my Aunt Sarah?

Three generations of Boot's went to North Rd School. When my son went there Mr Rogers and Miss Gregson were both still teaching there and they actually remembered me and my husband. They both seemed quite old when I was there but hadn't changed at all meeting them later when my children attended North Rd. Used to be terrified of Mr Rogers and his "Betsy" (slipper)but always liked Miss Gregson.

  • Re: Lewis Price by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 7-Jul-2011
Yes. I remember that it was noticable that people spoke differently in different parts of London. S, S.E., N and of course E. London once had distict accents. Bucks was not unlike W. Middlesx, but again was dfferent, so by the time you got as far as H. Wycombe you knew you were in a different place and N. of Aylesbury was like a different country.

Also, the people who had spent their lives on the canal were with different dialect and words, some of which were archaic from mid-Victorian times and had generally fallen out of use elsewhere. I remember Daisy and Bert Howard very well. When we first came to live in Bulls Bridge Road, and for many years afterwards, we used to see them daily. Daisy used to walk past every day on her way to and from the shops - a long walk back to their cottage at Bulls Bridge. I think Bert was an employee of British Waterways? And used to keep an eye on the men fishing the canal.

Where exactly was Snells Farm? I've read back on the Site that it was in Dormers Wells Lane, but I still can't place it. Can only remember the opening in the lane itself where we used to walk through, across open fields and trees until we got to the stream with the frogs in and further on the large pond just before you got to the Greenford road.

Pauline- From where I lived in North Road, I walked up to Palgrave Avenue, where there was a series of allys that came into Dormers Wells Lane about half way down, more or less opposite the farm entrance.

Thanks for that Michael. Just shows how ignorant I am about the roads in Southall. Even had to look up Palgrave Avenue on my map! I think we used to walk straight to the top of Burns Avenue to get to Dormers Wells. I didn't even realise that Dormers Wells was a Middle School for 8-12 year olds until 1954 when the Junior and Infant schools were built.

Thank you Josie. I've been trying to visualise all the old places. The Beehive was always a pub you remembered, especially on the bus route. At least you and Michael have given me some idea of where Snells Farm was.

Thanks Colin. Holy Trinity was my parish church in the 30's and 40's. Of the clergy listed I remember Mr Evans and Mr Wilson, and curate Evan Pilkington. Evan was one of the founders of the Pioneer club

I was also christened at Holy Trinity, and confirmed-the actual confirmation sevice was at St Georges, Bishop of London officiating-Geoffrey Fisher, soon to be Archbishop of Canterbury. I also went to Sunday School, often at the parish hall. Once, for mucking about, I was made to sit in the girls class!
