Llangollen Canal North Wales by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 30-May-2011
Although this has nothing to do with Southall, I wondered if any of you watched the fascinating programme of "Julia Bradbury's Canal Walks" on Thomas Telford's Llangollen Aqueduct on Saturday. I must admit I was completely ignorant of this fantastic bridge. You actually feel as if you are walking every step with Julia along the 6 miles of the canal from the "Horseshoe Falls" of the River Dee as it... more >>

for BARRY RAYMOND by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 25-May-2011
Barry

On the Heston Aerodrome thread on 19 May you referred to "Area 51" (re Northolt). Could you please explain this as I was totally in the dark until a few minutes ago until I was reading an article on "Roswell". Now I am confused and intrigued.

Keith

  • Re: for BARRY RAYMOND by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 26-May-2011
Hi Kieth area 51 as you have read is a secret site in the desert in the U.S.A where alsorts of strange aircraft are developed its very secret and i think this is what Barry means with the radar site at Northolt.

  • Re: for BARRY RAYMOND by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 26-May-2011
Aha. I didn't know this. I'm not sure there is any connection with Northolt, but nothing would surprise me. Especially as I do have a friend who once told me some mind blowing stuff about Roswell some years ago. Barry - suggest you look at the properties of 'GRAPHENE' and put that your Roswell box

  • Re: for BARRY RAYMOND by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 26-May-2011
I dont think there is connection between Roswell/area 51 and Northolt other than secrecy.

  • Re: for BARRY RAYMOND by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 26-May-2011
Nodoubt someone will now prove me wrong.

  • Re: for BARRY RAYMOND by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 26-May-2011
Denis - you are probably right on both counts. But consider the coincidence of Roswell and the "discovery" of Graphine, originally both 1947, and probably the best research commercial laboritary in the world at that time - Glaxos. Me, I know nuffin', - its all rumour & speculation

  • Re: for BARRY RAYMOND by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 26-May-2011
Keith you could be right as well.

  • Re: for BARRY RAYMOND by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 27-May-2011
Yes, although I am going "off message", it is "suggested" that the first discovery of GRAPHENE was at Roswell. Definitely worth a read-up about graphene on wiki. 60 years on and we can now produce it for ourselves

You're right Chris, it was Creamery Fare in Greenford. They used to serve cornets and wafers from a window at the front of the shop. They used one of those contraptions for wafers where a wafer was put in the bottom, the ice cream over that, then another wafer, and it was pushed up and out. I've still got a plastic one at the back of a cupboard somewhere.

  • Re: Ice Cream by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 24-May-2011
What about our own Toni's ice cream parlour in Southall? I can remember going past the shop on the way to Tudor road school when I was five. It was somewhere in the block of shops opposite the school. I remember the Tony who used to come around Northcote Avenue on his ice cream tricycle. • Re: Ice Cream by maggie shaw (Member 10255238) on 25-May-2011
I remember Tony coming to Cranleigh Gardens early 50's. A cornet was 3pence and Mum couldn't always afford it, but what a treat when she could! Then came the van with the chimes and the milk lollies that stuck to your lips! On another subject, do you remember sawdust chocolate - what the hell was that made with. I can still taste it now.

It was Walls Michael whose tricycles carried the slogan "Stop me and buy one". According to google - By 1939 some 7500 Walls salesmen were riding Britain's roads with fitted refrigerators on their tricycles carrying the slogan. So that answers my question as well how the ice cream kept cool. I didn't realise refrigeration was around then.

Wonder what we were picking up? The trouble is some memories are very vague, and you just get flashes of it. Can't ask my brothers now as they would definitely have remembered it, and they sadly are both gone.

Waterfall by Zeta Stanley (Member 10256988) on 12-May-2011
Pauline you mentioned where the water came from, Ron said it was from the cut, behind Berwick Ave there was a creek this ran along to the end of the houses in Berwick then there was an alley way and then the flats started maybe the stream was piped from there, because I can't remember the stream going any further than the end of the houses.

Later during WW2 when the USAAF were at Heston, they had a number of high wing monoplanes-as I recall they had an unmistakable engine noise. I can't remember the name of it.

  • Re: Heston Airport PowerPoint Presentation-19 May 2011 by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 15-May-2011
    Mike how many engines.

  • Re: Heston Airport PowerPoint Presentation-19 May 2011 by Michael Braden (Member 10097376) on 15-May-2011
    Denis-they were monoplanes.

  • Re: Heston Airport PowerPoint Presentation-19 May 2011 by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 15-May-2011
monoplanes can have more than one engine (one or two either side of the fuselage) The Nazis had a three engine monoplane with an engine in the nose as well

Similarly, biplanes - (two wings) but just one engine like our tiger moths, or again biplane with engine each side. In 1914-18 war Germans had a tri-plane (3 wings)

I always remember the story that before three letter airport codes came i in the late 50's Heathrow was always referred to as "LAP" (London Air Port) before Gatwick reopened. When the letter codes were introduced, Heathrow was LHR and Gatwick LGW. Some passengers still chalked "LAP" on their suitcases which then went to Bolivia as the code "LAP" was designated to LA Paz!

    @ Barry
Cannot help much, but my Dad was in the local ARP and Fire Service. H told me the "installation" you mention was 'top secret'. In the event of air raid or invasion, that location had absolute priority over everything else in the area and was to be saved/defended before anything else. It still had some importance for a few years after the war ended.

  • Re: Heston Airport PowerPoint Presentation-19 May 2011 by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 19-May-2011
P S It's importance for a few (3??) years after the war ended does not mean it was still used, but could just mean that the equipment there was such that it was still "secret" until it could be dismantled and removed. There were rumours about it of course and that is because nobody knew exactly what it was for.

  • Re: Heston Airport PowerPoint Presentation-19 May 2011 by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 19-May-2011
......... and finally I remember him telling me that the Police were to be informed immediately in the event of any suspicious activity/strangers, or people asking questions about it. He himself never found out exactly what it was for.

P S also seem to remember another secret site up at Eastcote, and these became 'Government offices' for some time after the war as it was a much bigger site. Memory is fading but I think both sites are about equidistant from Northolt Airport, and if the airport were a Luftwaffe bombing target, both just about far enough away not to have been hit and certainly not both of them.

The Waterfall by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 11-May-2011
When we were mucking about as kids over Spikes Bridge, one of our regular haunts was "The Waterfall." Once we had left the Park behind us we would cross the bridge, and somewhere along there on the left hand side through the trees and shrubs we would come to the Waterfall. We couldn't see the canal from there, but it was a steep incline made of concrete, and all covered in green slimy stuff, with... more >>

I bet you've got your winter woollies on Ron with that degree of temperature? I remember my cousin telling me that in Brisbane they were sitting on the beach at Christmas time in the baking hot sun.

  • Re: The Waterfall by Zeta Stanley (Member 10256988) on 12-May-2011
Yes Ron and Pauline I well remember the waterfall, and trying to run across the top, I did slip on occasions but not into gully, the waterfall was not far from my friend June who lived in the flats in
Berwick. We also used to play hide and seek in those bushes.

6degrees Ron, that's a little cool considering it's been around 14 here, better not brag though, there's worse to come. I can remember when we lived in Ipswich, Brisbane, the temperature would drop to minus 5 at night in the winter and by 10 in the morning it would around 20, and on the Gold Coast one year Xmas Day we had people round for dinner and the temperature rose to 40 degrees, unbearabl... more >>

  • Re: Measuring socks by Janice Johnson (Member 10240407) on 9-May-2011
I remember being measured for gloves but not socks in this way. I can also remember my mother calculating lengths of material using the rough measurements of elbow to wrist = 12 inches (30cms) and mid-chest to wrist with arm extended = 1 yard (90cms). Also, top of thumb to first joint = 1 inch (5cms). So if you're ever stuck without a ruler or tape measure these tactics might come in handy!!

Michael would this have been in the 40's 50's? I remember mu Mum bought a lovely lounge suite from them, their son, I can't recall his name went to Greggs when I was there.

  • Re: Southall Arcade by Phyl Hutnell (Member 10234816) on 27-Apr-2011
The Slaters who lived in St George's Avenue had a daughter Doreen, who married Charles Packer and had two daughters. They were neighbours when my sister lived in St G's Ave.and their daughters were friends with my niece. Charles Packer was a very nice man, who became a chiropodist. Sadly he passed away fairly recently, his wife having pre-deceased him some years ago.

  • Re: Southall Arcade by Michael Braden (Member 10097376) on 27-Apr-2011
Zeta, the Slaters were around long before the war,but still going strong in the period you mention.
Phyl, when my cousin Pamela Spikins with her mother and lived with us for s few years during and after 1942, Doreen was very helpful to Pam, who herself went to Greggs. I remember the Slaters with great affection/

Does anyone know if the Wagon and Horses at Hayes is still standing? One of my uncles married into the Buck family who owned boats. When old man Buck retired he took on the Wagon and Horses and my uncle worked for him before becoming landlord of various pubs (Red Lion at Greenford was one).

Janice - I remember Len telling me in 2009 that the Waggon & Horses was demolished. He saw it as he passed it. I had some nice memories of the gardens at the pub when we were childen in the 30's.
