Llangollen Canal North Wales

Although this has nothing to do with Southall, I wondered if any of you
watched the fascinating programme of "Julia Bradbury's Canal Walks" on
Thomas Telford's Llangollen Aqueduct on Saturday. I must admit I was
completely ignorant of this fantastic bridge. You actually feel as if
you are walking every step with Julia along the 6 miles of the canal
from the "Horseshoe Falls" of the River Dee as it
feeds into the Llangollen canal. I not only learnt a lot but so enjoyed
the beauty of the Welsh countryside and the mind-blowing crossing of
the barge across the Aqueduct itself - "the stream in the sky" (126 foot
high). I so enjoyed it, I just tapped in "BBC4 i-player Julia
Bradbury's Canal Walks Llangollen Canal" today and watched it all over
again. It's only half an hour, but it's wonderful! ... more >>

for BARRY RAYMOND

Barry
On the Heston Aerodrome thread on 19 May you referred to "Area 51" (re
Northolt). Could you please explain this as I was totally in the
dark until a few minutes ago until I was reading an article on
"Roswell". Now I am confused and intrigued.
Keith
- Re: for BARRY RAYMOND
by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 26-May-2011
Hi Kieth area 51 as you have
read is a secret site in the desert in the U.S.A where
alsorts of strange aircraft are developed its very secret and
i think this is what Barry means with the radar site at
Northolt.
- Re: for BARRY RAYMOND
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 26-May-2011
Aha. I didn't know this. I'm
not sure there is any connection with Northolt, but nothing would
surprise me. Especially as I do have a friend who once told me some
mind blowing stuff about Roswell some years ago. Barry - suggest
you look at the properties of 'GRAPHENE' and put that your Roswell box
- Re: for BARRY RAYMOND
by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 26-May-2011
I dont think there is connection between Roswell/area 51 and Northolt other than secrecy.
- Re: for BARRY RAYMOND
by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 26-May-2011
Nodoubt someone will now prove me wrong.
- Re: for BARRY RAYMOND
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 26-May-2011
Denis - you are probably right on
both counts. But consider the coincidence of Roswell and the
"discovery" of Graphine, originally both 1947, and probably the best
research commercial laboritary in the world at that time - Glaxos.
Me, I know nuffin', - its all rumour & speculation
- Re: for BARRY RAYMOND
by DENIS SEXTON (Member 10247112) on 26-May-2011
Keith you could be right as well.
- Re: for BARRY RAYMOND
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 27-May-2011
Yes, although I am going "off
message", it is "suggested" that the first discovery of GRAPHENE was at
Roswell. Definitely worth a read-up about graphene on wiki. 60
years on and we can now produce it for ourselves

You're right Chris, it was
Creamery Fare in Greenford. They used to serve cornets and wafers from a
window at the front of the shop. They used one of those contraptions
for wafers where a wafer was put in the bottom, the ice cream over that,
then another wafer, and it was pushed up and out. I've still got a
plastic one at the back of a cupboard somewhere.

- Re: Ice Cream

What about our own Toni's ice
cream parlour in Southall? I can remember going past the shop on the way
to Tudor road school when I was five. It was somewhere in the block of
shops opposite the school. I remember the Tony who used to come around
Northcote Avenue on his ice cream tricycle. Was this the same one from
the shop, and was the shop called "Toni's"?

Thanks Vince. The more I think
about Tony and his ice cream tricycle, I'm sure there used to be some
sort of a motor running. Perhaps I'm just imagining it, as it was a long
time ago? How would the ice cream be kept cold in those days?
- Re: Ice Cream
by maggie shaw (Member 10255238) on 25-May-2011
I remember Tony coming to
Cranleigh Gardens early 50's. A cornet was 3pence and Mum couldn't
always afford it, but what a treat when she could! Then came the van
with the chimes and the milk lollies that stuck to your lips! On
another subject, do you remember sawdust chocolate - what the hell was
that made with. I can still taste it now.

It was Walls Michael whose
tricycles carried the slogan "Stop me and buy one". According to google -
By 1939 some 7500 Walls salesmen were riding Britain's roads with
fitted refrigerators on their tricycles carrying the slogan. So that
answers my question as well how the ice cream kept cool. I didn't
realise refrigeration was around then.

I've just been reading an account
regarding Eldorado ice cream and thought it was worth mentioning. "I
was getting dressed up in my best clothes to go to my uncle's birthday
party... the war broke out just as we were leaving. I was all togged up
and an Eldorado Ice Cream man came down the street and we were sent out
to buy ices. The ice cream man said 'You can have the lot' and off he
went and all the kids down the road had the barrow full of ice cream."
Ronnie Elliott. At least Len Goddard's Eldorado ice cream man did take his tricycle back after he had given the ice cream away!

Yes Denis, it is possible it was
the tyre fire, as it was a huge fire, and the ground was very black. I
would have been about nineteen + so perhaps we just went over there to
have a look around. Wonder what we were picking up? The trouble is some
memories are very vague, and you just get flashes of it. Can't ask my
brothers now as they would definitely have remembered it, and they sadly
are both gone.

have been walking right past the top of Wimpey's when we traipsed to the
back entrance of Tudor road school during those war years.

Hanworth "Brown Bear"

by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 18-May-2011

I am sorry that I am unable to attend Thursdays meeting about Heston
Aerodrome (see other thread) and that is sad because I was staying up in
west London on Monday night, at Hampton. The 111 bus now goes past the
end of the road where I stayed on its way to Kingston. This reminded
me that as a boy, the 111 around Cranford Heston & Hounslow etc,
ALWAYS turned around at the end of its route which
was then "Hanworth, Brown Bear", but I can find no trace of this now.
Even the locals I spoke to had never heard of it, but I do see a lot of
new building work in the area (including a "Tescos corner" of course).
Does anyone know for sure where the Brown Bear used to be, or is it
still there with a more 'modern' name like so many of the pubs remaining
today. What was sad was going to Hampton and seeing so much building
where all the lovely nurseries once were. ... more >>

I used to live just along from
the 'Swan' (New Road) the 'Bear' was along side the A316 heading towards
Hounslow from Hanworth, looking at Google Earth, it appears now to be a
block of flats, it was still a pub when I left Hanworth in 1988, oh how
times change!
- Re: Hanworth
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 19-May-2011
Thanks Vince, very helpful. I assume it was south of the 316. Do you know where the 111 buses turned around??

EXCELLENT!! The info I have been seeking has kindly been posted on the Hanworth Knowhere board
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Think I can help wih this - the Brown Bear was at the South West corner
of the junction of the A316 and A314 in Hanworth. It was demolished (I
think) late 1960's / early seventies. It was run by a guy called Fred
Green and had avery competitive datrs team, several News of the World
champions including a guy who could not be beaten but only used six inch
nails.
Shelley - Have you spoken to Jim yet about Grove Terrace?? My family
of us children at number 5. Happy days.......some good - some bad. How
such large families coped in such a tiny house I don't know. No
bathroom, no inside toilet - gas light until the mid 50's. I could go
on. Looking forward to your reply. Chris x x
Pauline you mentioned where the water came from, Ron said it was from
the cut, behind Berwick Ave there was a creek this ran along to the end
of the houses in Berwick then there was an alley way and then the flats
started maybe the stream was piped from there, because I can't remember
the stream going any further than the end of the houses.
- Re: Waterfall
by Pauline Sykes (Member 10235828) on 13-May-2011
Thanks for that Zeta. I was still
puzzling about it when Ron said it came from the Cut. I couldn't work
it out. Another problem solved! I have a great deal to thank Southall
Knowhere for.
- Re: Waterfall
by Ronald Cox (Member 10259196) on 13-May-2011
Yes it was piped under the roads
into the field where you could see ICI in the distance.The closer to ICI
so the area became a bog, like a sump, I remember a cow getting bogged
and drowning.
superstitious, don't put two teaspoons in the saucer, meant twins!!! see
a safety pin in the street pick it up, good luck, if one dropped a
was in 1846 Southall ATC squadron 1942-1946. We visited Heston a number
of times to be shown over some of the aircraft being serviced there,
eg Boston Bombers. Occasionally we got a flight in a De Havilland
Dominee.
My Mother worked at Heston
Airport during the war. I have no idea what she did there. The only
memories I have, are of her going to work on her bike in white overalls.
After the war we moved to Wentworth Rd, right next to Heston Airport.
I mentioned in an earlier post, seeing my first jet engined plane, a DH
Vampire landing at Heston, piloted by Geoffrey De Havilland.
An interesting bit of trivia.
His father, also Geoffrey De Havilland, "spent two years working in the
design office of an omnibus company in Walthamstow". Presumably later
known as AEC Southall.
Boston aircraft nose with the team who developed it standing adjacent.
Many other interesting features.
Later during WW2 when the USAAF
were at Heston, they had a number of high wing monoplanes-as I recall
they had an unmistakable engine noise. I can't remember the name of it.
Denis-they were monoplanes.
- Re: Heston Airport PowerPoint Presentation-19 May 2011
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 15-May-2011
monoplanes can have more than one
engine (one or two either side of the fuselage) The Nazis had a three
engine monoplane with an engine in the nose as well
Similarly, biplanes - (two wings) but just one engine like our tiger
moths, or again biplane with engine each side. In 1914-18 war Germans
had a tri-plane (3 wings)
monoplanes where single engines aircraft belong to a
Sorry I cannot get to it from here in Arundel
By the way, about 18 months or so ago now somebody kindly posted details
of the only ever visit of a Sud Est Armagnac to Heathrow, with date and
registration letters. Sorry, but I can no longer find this info. I
did see this weird aeroplane with iis big TAI letters on a siver &
green wertically striped tailfin.
Could I trouble somebody for this info again please. Thanks in advance ... more >>
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 17-May-2011
Thanks Denis. I knew it must
be 1957-60 after which they had all been scrapped. I feel sure there
was only the one ever visit, but I was just looking up the Armagnac
histories on another site, I am amazed to see that F BAVF is also
recrded at LHR in Feb 1958. Nonetheless, I am pleased to have seen
one of these very rare aircraft. I remeber that nobody there knew
what it was and apparantly,
it was a surprise visitor being an emeergency hire for an Air France
Viscount that was still being serviced. I've always wondered what I
saw that day over 50 years ago, and it now looks as if I've pinned it
down to one of just two aircraft if the other site is true. I
remember the big black letters TAI on the tailfin clearly, and I doubt
that TAI had both BAVF & BAVH in 57 - 58, so just a little more
research to do now. Thanks for your help which is much appreciated ... more >>
- Re: Heston Airport PowerPoint Presentation-19 May 2011
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 17-May-2011
Yes, did spotting from the roof
of Queens which I undderstand is now rubble, having been demolished
earlier this year. Apparantly, no spotters alllowed now. I
remember at the top of Queens, a little broadcasters hut where they were
always playing Glen Miller records between commentaries, (music by
someone who died in an air accident!!)
I think the Armagnac was the rarest aircraft I ever saw.
I also remember that when there were strong south-westerly winds,
planes sometimes landed on the short diagonal runway and these came over
Greenford (South Greenford Halt was their first line-up marker, then
Southall gas holder on final approach) Constellations (and
Starliners) were my favourite aircraft design, but these were well on
the way out by 1960
Yes, plenty of lapel stickpins
too. SAA had a leaping springbok, had Swissair etc too but these
weren't as easy as baggage lebels, especially when so many airlines were
still using LAP North. Some of the labels were really well designed
and I've never forgotten that collection which my parents had no real
right to throw away. My brother lost his whole collection of SHELL
motoring posters and wall charts too which were iconic late 1950s designs, and he's never been able to replace those either. ... more >>
I always remember the story that
before three letter airport codes came i in the late 50's Heathrow was
always referred to as "LAP" (London Air Port) before Gatwick reopened.
When the letter codes were introduced, Heathrow was LHR and Gatwick
LGW. Some passengers still chalked "LAP" on their suitcases which
then went to Bolivia as the code "LAP" was designated to LA Paz!
I still think of a mint
Tiger Moth windscreen & tail skid, instrument panels with
gauges from Avro Tudors broken up at Southend by Aviation
traders i.e Fredy Laker in the late 1950s very little of
these aircraft now survive, came home all gone in the bin i
know how you both fell.
@ Barry
Cannot help much, but my Dad was in the local ARP and Fire Service. H
told me the "installation" you mention was 'top secret'. In the event
of air raid or invasion, that location had absolute priority over
everything else in the area and was to be saved/defended before anything
else. It still had some importance for a few years after the war
ended.
- Re: Heston Airport PowerPoint Presentation-19 May 2011
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 19-May-2011
P S It's importance for a few
(3??) years after the war ended does not mean it was still used, but
could just mean that the equipment there was such that it was still
"secret" until it could be dismantled and removed. There were rumours
about it of course and that is because nobody knew exactly what it was
for.
- Re: Heston Airport PowerPoint Presentation-19 May 2011
by keith williams (Member 10241513) on 19-May-2011
......... and finally I remember
him telling me that the Police were to be informed immediately in the
about it. He himself never found out exactly what it was for.
P S also seem to remember another
secret site up at Eastcote, and these became 'Government offices' for
some time after the war as it was a much bigger site. Memory is fading
but I think both sites are about equidistant from Northolt Airport, and
if the airport were a Luftwaffe bombing target, both just about far
enough away not to have been hit and certainly not both of them.
The Waterfall
When we were mucking about as kids over Spikes Bridge, one of our
regular haunts was "The Waterfall." Once we had left the Park behind us
we would cross the bridge, and somewhere along there on the left hand
side through the trees and shrubs we would come to the Waterfall. We
couldn't see the canal from there, but it was a steep incline made of
concrete, and all covered in green slimy stuff, with
water trickling down it from somewhere higher. Sometimes the water was
faster than other times. The game was you had to walk across the top of
the waterfall without losing your balance and slipping down. As I
remember there was a long water trough which ran along the bottom. That
to me was the frightening bit. Although I didn't ever fsll down the
waterfall I remember the boys did sometimes. Does anyone else remember
this, and where the water was coming from? I know we couldn't see what
was behind as there was either a wall or thick hedges there. I've often
thought about this over the years, as you do!! ... more >>
6degrees Ron, that's a little
cool considering it's been around 14 here, better not brag though,
there's worse to come. I can remember when we lived in Ipswich,
Does anyone remember when our mother would take us to buy socks and the
lady would ask us to hold out our hand and make a fist, then she would
put the sole of the sock around the hand and that would be the size you
took!!!! well a few weeks back in New Lynn Ak, our shopping mall, there
is a Chinese sock bar and he asked me to do just that, I couldn't
believe it, all those years ago, and they stil l do that in China, obviously. ... more >>
I remember being measured for
gloves but not socks in this way. I can also remember my mother
calculating lengths of material using the rough measurements of elbow to
wrist = 12 inches (30cms) and mid-chest to wrist with arm extended = 1
yard (90cms). Also, top of thumb to first joint = 1 inch (5cms). So if
you're ever stuck without a ruler or tape measure these tactics might
come in handy!!
I seem to remember being asked
years ago what size shoes I took to calculate the size gloves I needed.
As I had large feet - 7.1/2 in those days - my gloves were also a large
size.
- Re: Measuring socks
by Chris (Member 10220786) on 9-May-2011
I remember as a child using the following calculations: - I think it worked - might try it later to see.
Twice round the tumb is once round the wrist; twice round the wrist is
once round the neck; twice round the neck is once round the waist.
Oh! reading about all that lovely
food we had years ago Yvonne. Pigs trotters, chidlings, and that
wonderful brawn made from the pigs head. I used to make my friends laugh
when I told them I had half a pig grinning at me in the freezer to make
brawn. My mother used to make it, but after the diseases animals were
getting in the brain I wouldn't make it again. Steak & kidney suet
pudding, jam roly poly,
spotted dick, treacle tart and that wonderful dripping with the lovely
beef jelly! We didn't have to worry about cholesterol then. Wouldn't
have known what it was! Yes, I remember the smell of the Fullers, Smith
The Slaters who lived in St
George's Avenue had a daughter Doreen, who married Charles Packer and
had two daughters. They were neighbours when my sister lived in St G's
Ave.and their daughters were friends with my niece. Charles Packer was a
very nice man, who became a chiropodist. Sadly he passed away fairly
recently, his wife having pre-deceased him some years ago.
Zeta, the Slaters were around long before the war,but still going strong in the period you mention.
Phyl, when my cousin Pamela Spikins with her mother and lived
with us for s few years during and after 1942, Doreen was very helpful
to Pam, who herself went to Greggs. I remember the Slaters with great
affection/
Yvonne - You bring it all to life
when you mention the old blue notice board in the grounds of the old St
John's church in King street. Were the letters in gold? I was trying to
remember what they said. Was is "God is love?" When you remember the
church you also can still see the "Havelock Arms" across the street in
your mind's eye. Just tapped in "Havelock Arms Southall" in google, and
in the Flicker photo sharing up came a really large picture of the pub which said in the caption underneath
We were only talking about EMI
yesterday Denis. My son-in-law's father was a heavy goods driver, and
drove all over the country. He mentioned EMI and the AEC. I expect with
the massive change in the music industry and the availability of music
on the Internet, it was inevitable. Glad you were able to see the trains
stopping at the stations in the model village. I bet there were loads
of kids there Denis? Did
you mean the Owl Cafe which used to be at the bottom of Hayes Station
or was there another one at Burnham? It's good we've got so many photos
of places which are now gone or changed completely. ... more >>
keeper of Burnham Beeches for many years, they lived at Beech cottage,
which I will put in of Ged and I aged 5 and 7 on one of the roundabouts
at the Fair in the Beeches, also I will put in a photo of Ged's Dad in
his uniform - yes they have done away with all that and lots of posh
Hello Josie - That's really
cheered me up about the Northcote being refurbished. Thank you. As you
say it might not be a pub, but at least some of the ghosts will remain!!
I only ever went in the Off-licence for my mum's guinness. She was told
to drink one every day after she recuperated from TB. My friend Mauvine
and I did venture to listen to the band playing and all the laughter
going on in the dance
hall when the Yanks were there, but we didn't go in there. We were too
young, and someone would have bound to have told my dad. Regards
