On the 1871 census Alfred is living in Henley with his mother, his occupation is given as a Wine Merchant. Is an executor of the Will of John Edwin IVE in 1869 and also of the Will of John Goodwin IVE in 1888. Appears on the 1881 census living at Market Place, Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire he is described as a Wine Merchant.
